Book Description
The promise of discretion and pampering-and a long-overdue reconciliation with her mother-draws Caroline Blessing, the young wife of a newly-elected Congressman, to the fancy Phoenix Spa. But after her first night in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, Caroline wakes to find the rich and famous guests in turmoil and under suspicion: the spa's flamboyant and ambitious owner has been murdered. As the secrets come out-and the body count rises, can Caroline keep herself from becoming the next victim? In the tradition of such collaborative classics as Naken Came the Manatee and The Floating Admiral, each chapter in this serial novel is written by one of today's most talented mystery novelists.
Customer Reviews:
It was OK --- a little disappointing.......2007-07-24
I enjoyed the book, but the last chapter was kind of a dumping ground for everything. Somehow the author of the last chapter threw it all together to end the story --- but it was a mish mosh that I didn't follow very well. I read it because a couple of my favorite writers were in the "pack" --- Mary Jane Clark, particularly. The last chapter was too long and just a mess, in my opinion.
Incipt Vita Nova: Spa motto.......2006-08-09
The Phonenix, contrary to the one located on Gay Street, is an upscale spa for the rich and famous. The scene of five murders, this time the characters are all interrelated, which is uncovered in the final chapter. It was all rather convoluted, being the artistic endeavors of thirteen prominent writers, each for one chapter. This is the result of a project to copy the serial novels of the Thirties in which Agatha Cristie was involved. In 'Agatha,' the movie, she was incognito "shadowing" her nemesis in a steam room in England about the same time she was writing such (living a dream). Our Phoenix building downtown has been renovated into high priced condos for strange folks who moved here and think it is novel to live on the main street of this town. No Spa there, however, you have to go to Powell to the Fitness Center to find the hot tub and steam room.
The Phoenix in this story in segments is a place of myster with drugs, adoptions, murders all involved until the Chapter 13 which explains all in detail to the survivors who are all family, interrelated in a weird way. "A family, rising phoenixlike from the ashes." Caroline thanked God for bringint this man into her life; Tennessee congressman Doug Blessing with some secrets of his own. She hadd not "forced her way to freedom" because of an anticipated "need for Doug's more delicate plumbing." This written by a mystery writer as opposed to a romance novelist who would be more explicit. Just a slightly different way of phrasing, which I always used in the book reviews I gave to the literary club -- it was fun to confuse those who weren't napping. The Phoenix had a mud room with its own secret stash.
Some of the gathering of strong personalities include the beautiful made model (Adonis), the kinky actress, the green-haired rock star who went through N.A., the detective Toscana who sometimes acted like God ("and Toscana saw that it was good."), Dante, t he masseur, and Geoff, the assitant pastry chef. The sociopathic personality responsible for the deaths had no conscience, and was evil with no sense of honor. Knowledge was her weapon. A person can only ask, to be granted a wish for anything.
Led by Nevada Barr based this confusing story showing how a character can be killed in a spa. I review another book wherin the pivotal chatacter was killed in the steam room of the notel spa shortly before his scheduled assignation with the main person. So, this premise is nothing new, nor the format. What is different is t he freedom of each of these authors to develop their own characters and circumstances leading to the next sequence of unusual, never-thought-of-before things a client could do at this exclusive Phoenix Spa. This serial format started in 1931 with 'The Floating Admiral' which was serialized in England. Marcia Talley, editor, discovers a link with that first collaboration and declares, "We have come full circle."
Two more recent such workings are 'Naked Came the Stranger ' (1969) by "Newsday" and 'Naked Came the Manatee' serialized in the "Miami Herald."
Naked go the mystery writers.......2005-10-08
First of all, to enjoy this sort of novel, you have to be able to appreciate what's going on behind the scenes: backstabbing; plot-twisting; character reinventions. And I'm not talking about the story itself. I'm talking about what the 13 authors are trying to do to each other!
The genre originated wonderfully with the august members of the British Detection Club way back in 1931, in a "serial" novel in which the various authors contrived ways to skullduggle not only the reader but each other and try to make it almost impossible for the final writer to wrap everything up neatly and tie it with a bowknot. That effort, "The Floating Admiral," is still the very best of its type. More recently, it's been done with sparkling wit by the Miami bunch including Carl Hiassen and Dave Barry in a delicious romp entitled "Naked Came the Manatee."
Now it's been tackled by a baker's dozen of America's female mystery writers. Yes, the plot is silly. Yes, the characters aren't all that fully developed. But who cares? The enjoyment of this book, as the others, is in seeing what each successive writer is doing to skewer what has already been written (without, however, contradicting it) and send the story reeling in a provocatively new direction. New openings are abruptly cut off at the knees. (Is she dead? Or is she only concussive?) Contrasting scenarios challenge what you think you've already assuredly figured out.
It doesn't really matter who winds up having done what to whom. If you're enjoying the wicked twists being perpetrated not by the characters but by their creators, then what you're looking for is how the final writer responds to the challenge of wrapping everything up with no loose ends and no plot spins left twisting in the wind--not even the yellow polkadot bikini! And in this regard, Laurie King shines splendidly.
As I closed the book, I was imagining the final dinner party those naughty thirteen were having after they all got to read King's inventive closure, and what a laugh they were enjoying. But the laughter is not at our expense. We share in it.
A Round Robin Mystery.......2005-03-15
This is a readable tale for a rainy evening, but using thirteen authhors for the thirteen chapters resulted in some extreme changes of direction. It sounded like a cast of characters with multiple personality disorders. Some chapters are better than others. Caroline's raid on the kitchen is really funny. But other chapters don't seem to come across as well. A few situations are transparent, and others are a bit of a stretch. Perhaps it ended up with too many twists and turns.
A Blah Blend.......2004-07-02
Nice idea, nice effort, but with a blah outcome. These writers, who are superstars in their own write, had to suppress too much of their natural talent to weave a seamless story. Don't buy, go to the library.
Book Description
The legendary Messner writes about the most tragic event in his career!
· Did Reinhold Messner sacrifice his brother to his ambition?
· Publication of this book in Germany stirred controversy across Europe
· The most personal book Messner has ever written
· More than 45,000 copies sold of the German edition
Reinhold Messner is famous for many firsts: First to climb all 14 8000 meter peaks; first (with Peter Habeler) to summit Everest without supplementary oxygen; first to solo Everest. None of these, however, equals the drama of his first 8000-meter peak, Nanga Parbat.
32 years later, Messner is still haunted by the events of June 1970. While others on the expedition retreated, Reinhold Messner went for the summit, leaving his brother, Günther, behind with the team photographer. Some hours later he found that Günther had followed him.The two reached the summit but Günther developed altitude sickness; he was incapable of descending the technically-challenging route they had taken in reaching the summit. They became separated during the descent via the Diamar Flank, and when Reinhold returned to where he had left Günther, his brother was gone.
At basecamp ugly accusations were exchanged between members of the expedition and a court battle followed in Germany. In this new book Reinhold Messner revisits this most painful period in his life, reviewing his own actions and accusing others for the way things turned out on Nanga Parbat.
Customer Reviews:
More polemic than adventure tale.......2005-08-21
Reinhold Messner is of course a legend in mountaineering. This book recounts his climb of Nanga Parbat in 1970 with his brother Gunther and a team formed by Dr. Karl Maria Herligkoffer. It is really Messner's explanation of the events that led to Gunther's death on the mountain, illumintated by his grief over the loss of his beloved brother. Of course the disputes over these events will never be resolved, many of the participants are now dead, but Naked Mountain is an act of contrition and catharsis for Messner more that a readable tale of adventure. The language seems somewhat dated and artificial, but I suspect this is due to translation issues. Overall I would rate this book a moderate plus for readers of mountaineering literature.
Engaging.......2005-01-09
I read this book in one setting, it was so mesmerizing and engaging. The pictures are exquisite. The historical perspective laid a wonderful foundation for the tale of Reinhold and his brother Gunther. The sheer will to live is astonishing.
The Rest of the Story.......2004-07-23
This is a much awaited book as Messner tells his side of what happened on the Nanga Parbut expedition that killed his brother in 1970. The book mentioned that as a condition for the tour, climbers were required to sign Confidentiality Documents that they would not discuss the climb keeping the expedition organizer from being subject to criticism. This gentleman was mountain obsessed as his half brother had died on the mountain years earlier. He also was not a climber which set him up for criticism as the real climbers downgraded the organization work necessary to mount this expedition. He has since passed on which I suspect is one reason the book has now been written.
One must remember that this is a biased report by Messner but I don't think unbelievable. He gives him and his brother credit for the massive hauling and camp building only to be told at summit strategy that he is on the assault team but his beloved brother is not.
What happens next as he attempts to summit and surprisingly is followed by a late attempt by his brother is controversial, dangerous and makes for exceptional reading. From Messner's standpoint without a rescue crew coming they descend down the backside of the mountain as it is their only option with limited equipment but creates another set of problems. An interesting section of the book is after Messner descends but must communicate with villagers as he is near death.
Overall, I would encourage anyone to read this book that likes mountaineering stories. It's written by a controversial, master climber. The book also is littered with pictures of the mountain which are quite striking.
Finally The Truth.......2004-06-04
I've been impatiently waiting for this book to be written for decades and have a million thanks to offer Reinhold, for finally seeing this project through to completion. In order to understand my perspective, you should realize that once upon a time, I was an armchair mountaineer, raised on classics such as Annapurna and Nanga Parbat Pilgrimage. The latter was my introduction to the bizarre and confusing Dr. Herlingkoffer, organizer of many Himalayan expeditions, some of them among the most controversial in the history of high altitude mountaineering. Reinhold Messner became a force to be reckoned with in the world of climbing in the '60s. When I read of the disaster on Nanga Parbat, it was like deja vu all over again, with claims and counter-claims, lawsuits and feeling spoonfed with the official expedition account that obviously left out key facts.
As time passed, I didn't feel that the press treated Reinhold fairly. I wanted to know all the facts and to hear his side of the story. One could find snippets here and there, but his economical writing style has always been a bit cold and detached to say the least. But I recognized the man for what he was, followed his career and read everything he wrote. As those years passed, I kept wondering if he'd ever back up and write about the expedition that changed his life forever - with the kind of detail and insight it deserved.
Karl Herlingkoffer passed on a few years ago and maybe this book's appearance is linked to his death. Regardless, it's long overdue but in a way, it was worth the wait. Time is often required to gain insightful perspective, to dull the rough edges and to heal wounds. The loss of his brother and the resulting lies that condemned Reinhold to a life of controversy also gave him an incredible focus. Clearly, he had something to prove to the mountaineering community and he proved his points well. It's easy to point out climbers that have upped the ante after Reinhold passed his prime, but any realistic overview of the history of big, bold climbs would point to Reinhold as being a prime force in shaping the standards of today in the Himalaya and the other major ranges. It's great to now be able to read the facts, the feelings and the aftermath as he sees it. Absolute classic.
Messner's best effort.......2003-11-22
A superior book. I know it's a bit a stretch to hear "Messner" and "Classic book" in the same sentence but this one could be destined to rank among the all-time great mountaineering books. Over the years, Messner has written many books on some not-so-interesting topics but until now had shyed away from recounting the most fascinating and tragic event of his legendary mountaineering career - namely the 1970 first (and still only) ascent of the massive Rupal Face of Nanga Parbat and the subsequent death of his brother Gunther during the descent of the Diamar Face. This book is at times reminiscent of Maurice Herzog's "Annapurna" and Joe Simpson's "Touching the Void" at others. The writing style is pure Messner so if you've found his work difficult to digest in the past, you may find yourself disappointed. But if you appreciate a great mountain tale that has triumph, tragedy, anger, controversy and an outstanding historical perspective, you could find yourself spellbound by this one.
The first part of the book is dedicated to the early attempts on Nanga Parbat and Hermann Buhl's solo first ascent of "The Naked Mountain" in 1953. This all ties in nicely with Messner's expedition chronicle as the Buhl and Messner expeditions were both led by Dr. Karl Herrligkoffer, who just so happens to have been the half brother of Willy Merkl after whom many of the features of Nanga Parbat are named. Unlike say "The Second Death of George Mallory," there is nothing contrived about this book. The recollection of events in June 1970 is interlaced with quotes from Felix Kuhn and Karl Herrligkoffer as well as letters and journal entries from Gunther Messner. Mountaineering writing at its best.

Book Description
Two important events in 1997--the balanced-budget deal and the completion of the Pentagon's Quadrennial Defense Review (QDR)--promise to shape U.S. military policy for the next several years. Unfortunately, they are at odds with each other. The balanced budget accord will result in a real level of defense spending that is 8 percent lower in 2002 than in 1998. But the proportionate cuts in personnel and weaponry that the QDR calls for are only about half that size. Moreover, the U.S. military is near the end of its so-called "procurement holiday" and will soon have to buy more equipment. In this study, Michael O'Hanlon suggests a way out of this budgetary fix. In contrast to the current U.S. military posture, built around a requirement to fight two Desert-Storm like wars at once, he offers an alternative force structure organized around the concept of a "Desert Storm plus Desert Shield plus Bosnia/IFOR" requirement. O'Hanlon also suggests that naval operations be conducted more efficiently by leaving ships on forward station for longer periods of time and rotating crews by airlift. Finally, he argues for a number of selected economies in weapons modernization programs, together with some increases in areas like strategic airlift, sealift, and transport helicopters. The resulting force would save over $10 billion a year.
Customer Reviews:
A great Analysis.......2000-04-10
In this book, Michael O'Hanlon suggests a way out of this budgetary fix. In contrast to the current military posture calling for the United States to be capable of waging two Desert Storm-like wars at a time, he argues for a "Desert Storm plus Desert Shield plus Bosnia peacekeeping" capability as well as selected economies in weapons modernization programs to save a total of $15 billion a year. He is a great analyst and I would definitely recommend this book to be read.

Customer Reviews:
Great for Fenton lovers!!.......2007-08-12
I got this gift for someone else, and they LOVE IT. All the information they were seeking was there, plus it helped price and identify the Fenton items they had.
The pictures in the book are beautiful, you can see every detail.
Many photos, a lot of info, but difficult to use........2007-03-25
The lack of an index makes this book difficult to use efficiently. The only guide is the table of contents which divides the book by pattern, then color. If you want to look up a particular piece and you don't know the name of the pattern, you will have to look through the entire book to figure it out and hope the piece you have happens to be in this book. Likewise if you don't know the color name of the piece. With Fenton, what you think is pink might actually be called peach. Is what you have light blue, aqua or turquoise? You won't be able to figure it out unless you look at every possibility. If you happen to collect Fenton "Amberina" don't buy this book, there isn't any reference at all to that color.
I find the layout too busy and hard to look out. The black type on green background for the price guide adds to the busy look.
Yes, there are a lot of photos and info but in my opinion, the book really needs to be more well organized for me to call it a good book.
great information awesome pictures.......2007-03-10
im a newer collector so i needed some reference guides.this book has tons of pictures, pricing and information from cover to cover..id recommend it to any fenton collector new or old
FentonGlass 1939-1980.......2007-01-04

Fenton glass from 1939 to 1980 beautifully illustrated........2006-03-16
This execellent book makes identifying and pricing Fenton glassware a snap. As well as the major patterns, supplemental patterns are also included. Each piece is pictured and identified so you don't have to quess what Fenton called a particular piece. The color is execellent.
It has become one of my favorite books.

Parenting is the most profound and life-changing experience we can have as human beings. Perhaps no area is more fertile ground for speculation--what kind of parent do I want to be?--or more perfectly suited for Evelyn McFarlane and James Saywell's provocative questions.
If you could be seven years old again for one whole day, knowing what you know now, how would you spend it? If you were to finish the sentence "The best thing about being a parent is . . . ," what would you say? If you could undo one thing your parents did, what would it be? If you were asked what the most difficult thing you ever had to explain to your children was, how would you answer? If you were to name the absolute best gift you ever received as a child, what would it be?
As the fifth book in the bestselling If . . . series, Questions for Parents takes America's favorite parlor game to an entirely new level. This collection of 500 original questions is perfect for siblings and family reunions, as well as expectant and new parents. Chal-lenging and astonishing, this book will inspire conversations, stimulate favorite memories, and reveal sides of your friends and family that you never knew existed.

Conversation starter for parents.......2000-07-18
This is a great book that gets a conversation going between two parents. In my case, I gave the book to my brother and sister-in-law in preparation for their first baby. I think it makes parents talk about certain issues that might never come up otherwise.

Book Description
Emerging from a poor, stereotypically white-trash childhood in Detroit, this vengeful hip-hop devotee soon turned his anger into an art form and shot to global notoriety. Eminem has written two multi-platinum best-selling albums of surreally inventive, vicious, scattergun brilliance and become the world’s premier rapper and an icon for disaffected teenagers everywhere. Along the way, though, he’s been accused of homophobia, endorsing drug abuse, encouraging violence against women, and flirting with incarceration—a fate many see as inevitable for this psychologically flawed modern antihero. So where does Marshall Mathers end and Slim Shady begin? Who, in short, is this enigma — the person indubitably considered today’s most contradictory and controversial entertainer know as Eminem? Containing 60 fantastic full-color photographs, this illustrated biography is a celebration of the uniquely provocative and complex rapper who advises his young fans, “Don’t do drugs, have unprotected sex, or be violent—leave that to me.”

Great Product!.......2007-07-17
First of all the book is in excellent condition. The book itself is great! I loved reading it....I have had it for about 10 days now and I've already read it twice....cover to cover.
Definetly a must have item.
If it came with a 10 dollar bill, I'd pay 4 for it.......2006-04-13
If you have heard the songs on the albums covered, and ever read the album covers, save the ink trees and paper wasted on this lame caper. The lyrics and songs are full of misquotes, nothing novel or of note was wrote, paraphrasing the misheard words of spitfire rhymes I've heard a thousand times and apparently this punk "author" had transcribed. Other reviewers explained that is was a lame biography but showed stories that transpired that inspired the spirit of the lyrics you hear, but they obviously were as frightfully uninsightful as the writer. Let me save you the six bucks for the used with the truth: When it's slim spittin' about drugs, it's for fun and humor...When it's Em about family, it's addressin' the rumors...When it's a diss it's clear and every lyric is what your hear and means, love Em or hate `im, what is said verbatim.
A The Story of Eminem Through His Songs.......2004-02-15
The book has a great presentation and describes most of the songs Eminem appeared in or wrote. From his first album, Infinite, to the development of Slim Shady in the Slim Shady EP to getting picked up by Dr Dre in the Slim Shady LP to the other songs in Marshal Mathers and Eminem Show as well as collaborations and 8 Mile. Not really a bio, but a good compliment to his books.
I
<3 Eminem and this Book!!! ~Stephanie (15 yrs old).......2003-12-28
I really liked this book. It contains really good pictures of him. It has the reasons for why Eminem wrote all of the songs he did, from the Slim Shady EP, to the Slim Shady LP, to the Marshall Mathers LP, to the Eminem Show, to the 8 Mile soundtrack. It talks about struggles in his life with his mother, Debbie, and Kim. It also talks about his daugter, Hailie Jade. If you are expecting a book all about his life, though, then you shouldn't get this book because it basically describes the reasons for writing each song. I enjoyed this book and if you are a huge Eminem fan like I am, then I think that you will like this book too!!!

She's pretty transparent.......2005-10-12
I don't think JR Watkins is an utter goldigging skank or anything,,but it's pretty obvious she had an affair with him and got angry when he wouldn't take it "to the next level". Maybe he did use her as a free babysitter,,,but she allowed it. She was Kim Mathers friend for years but turns around and backstabs her like this to millions of readers?? Doesn't say too much about her,,,and what woman would endanger her marriage and stay overnight with some guy if she WASNT having sex with him,,or trying to??
Get over yourself JR. You aint the first and you won't be his last. He didn't cause your problems, you did.
Interesting Read.......2003-05-17
Aside from the poor grammatical style of the book (the editor ought to have his/her english degree revoked!) I thought the book was not bad. I tend to disbelieve anything I read about any celebrity and actively avoid celebrity gossip, but I couldn't help myself on this book.
This book reads more like a confessional at times than an expose of Eminem's life, and there are certain areas in relation to his dating life that make me suspect to Watkins motivations, but I agree that it seems this rap star has more people hanging on to him for his money than anything. This book reminded me why I would never want to be famous.
I would've given it 4 stars, but, again, the grammatical errors glared out at me too often.

There is a large amount of required learning needed.
I hope her 1 1/2 minutes of fame was worth it.
A totally different perspective.......2003-04-25
Cleaning out my Closet is quite short and it's obviously self-published and went out without much editing.... BUT, the typos and poor syntax do not detract from the fascinating story JR Watkins has to tell. It's a refreshing story that talks about Eminem's life from all angles and aspects. Cleaning Out My Closet is not a history of Eminem; it's a memior of a friend of his who was privy to the inner working of his life for a few years at the height of his fame. This is not a hatchet-job -- it's an honest, gritty, and often heartwarming story of a dad, a rapper, a husband, and a friend. There are some interesting photos from the author's personal collection, as well. Definitely worth buying for fans of Em.
don't bother.......2003-04-18
I wouldn't even bother buying this book-and that says a lot considering I'm a HUGE Eminem fan...The author can't even string together a sentence, let alone keep you entertained for an entire book!
I hear there's one coming out in the Fall by that Rolling Stone writer, Anthony Bozza. MTV says it's the more "intellectual one," looking at Eminem's role in hip-hop, etc. He wrote that first Eminem cover story-and in my opinion it's the best friggin' article I've ever read!! He did another one at the time of the Eminem Show. I'd save my money for that one.

Overcoming problems.......2003-03-13
I think that this book was very well put together. The author explained the characters in detailed and put a lot of effort into writing this book. This book was about 4 friends that had individual problems and how they worked them out. I will recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about people who are faced with problems and how they overcome them.

Book Description
Perhaps the greatest scholar of Jewish mysticism in the twentieth century, Gershom Scholem (1897-1982) once said of himself, "I have no biography, only a bibliography." Yet, in thousands of letters written over his lifetime, his biography does unfold, inscribing a life that epitomized the intellectual ferment and political drama of an era. This selection of the best and most representative letters--drawn from the 3000 page German edition--gives readers an intimate view of this remarkable man, from his troubled family life in Germany to his emergence as one of the leading lights of Israel during its founding and formative years.
In the letters, we witness the travails and vicissitudes of the Scholem family, a drama in which Gershom is banished by his father for his anti-kaiser Zionist sentiments; his antiwar, socialist brother is hounded and murdered; and his mother and remaining brothers are forced to emigrate. We see Scholem's friendships with some of the most intriguing intellectuals of the twentieth century--such as Hannah Arendt, Walter Benjamin, and Theodor Adorno--blossom and, on occasion, wither. And we learn firsthand about his Zionist commitment and his scholarly career, from his move to Palestine in the 1920s to his work as Professor of Jewish Mysticism at the Hebrew University. Over the course of seven decades that comprised the most significant events of the twentieth century, these letters reveal how Scholem's scholarship is informed by the experiences he so eloquently described.
