AN informative biography of real american lawman, a modern gunfighter. I have read other smaller bios of Agent Bryce, but this one is very informative. it shows the inside of the man and what it took to be an early American law enforcement officer.
It takes the reader along for ride through the depression era outlaws and lawmen.

A Good Reference For QQQ's Investors!.......2002-12-31
Here's a book for the tech investor who wants to know what the different companies in the NASDAQ 100 do. There's a simple company profile, earning projection, revenue growth chart, and key financial ratios.
Since all of these things can be gotten over the Internet these days, the main benefit of this book is that it is in book form and you can pick it up for stock ideas in the tech area (except for IBM and HPQ).
The only thing that I found interesting was the author's Top 25 Picks for 2002-2003. This list includes all the big cap tech stocks except QCOM and has some comments about each choice. There's also an interesting discussion about the QQQ's and the Rydex funds and how it might be better for most investors to simply buy these instead of riding the ups and downs of these highly-volatile individual issues.
I would like to have seen a more lively format, but I guess this book wasn't meant for my entertainment. If you want to buy individual stocks within the NASDAQ 100, you will need more current information in addition to what is presented here.
The Bottom Line: It's a handy reference.

Classic topic, dated presentation.......2007-05-07
Some of the designs in this book are projects that I definitely intend to build. However, using this book to produce the designs in it requires a good set of woodworking skills and ability to come up with the project based on a minimal presentation. The drawings are adequate, but the photos are very poor quality. Frankly I could produce a better quality presentation on an office copier. Very dated to the 70's and not a book to read just for enjoyment or to look at the pictures.

I took the initiative to build the carved corner china from the plans in this book and they are excellent. When I was done with my project I wrote Mr. Gottshall with photos of my project and he wrote back immediately, as I am perhaps the only other person he knew who built this particular project.
I telephoned him to thank him for the education I got building from his plans but alas, he had had a stroke. This was in 1978. I can be reasonably certain Frank has passed away by now, but his legacy is in his books which got better as he got older. A must for any cabintmaker.

I gave this book "Making Antique Furniture Reproductions" as a present to a person who is learning how to make furniture. This book was very well received and appreciated for all of its detailed information and illustrations.
Gottshall will be a good companion........2003-01-09
Franklin Gottshall has written a number of great woodworking project/reproduction books and periodically reshuffles and reassembles his popular plans. This book one is similar to an earlier red cover version on Reproducing Antique Furniture. I built a variation of the blockfront chest. Gottshall's construction explanations are very clear and his drawings are thorough, and accurate. I wanted a four drawer instead of a three drawer chest. I used a Kittinger catalog to rescale the piece, but basically followed Gottshall's construction. His piece did call for full 7/8in sides which required a little research to find. A source supply would have been nice. I accomplished the carving of the shells from his layout, though I modified the center design somewhat, and thought his shell looked a little thick, but simply thinning it down did the trick. Because when I built the piece in 1974, I didn't have the variety of router bits available today, I found I had to design some templates and jigs to ensure success on the complex cuts. But all that is doable. Recommend that you draw up full scale plans from Gottshall's plans for complex pieces. It will help you learn the construction. Even if you do not like or build all the pieces, it is a valuable reference on fine furniture construction that you'll reference often. It's a great book.

Designer Scrapbooks with K & Company sent as Christmas Gift.......2007-01-15
My daughter-in-law had entered a Scrapbook on her wish list for Christmas (this is not one she selected) and since she and my son live in Germany I just had to get her the very best I could. After she opened this gift she was pleased with my choice, I am sure that if there is ever a problem I will hear but, for now she is pleased and therefore so am I. I am greatful that Amazon has the wish list I just wish my daughter-in-law would use it more often.

If you're looking for ideas on how to use the K&Company line of supplies in artsy scrapbook pages and myriad other paper crafting projects, then this book will not disappoint. But since the book's title is designer SCRAPBOOKS, I felt that they were too light on actual scrapbooking ideas & examples. Another point that this and many scrapbooking "idea books" fall short on, in my opinion, is presenting journaling and how to successfully use not-always-so-artsy photos to preserve those memories.
Beautifully photographed, this book is definitely "eye candy" for the paper crafter, but as a real-life scrapbooking how-to book, I'd look elsewhere.

Excellent Overview of Weill's Work for the Theatre.......2007-04-11
Kurt Weill's career has been hotly debated for more than 60 years. The questions began while he was still alive: Did he sell out his German artistry for the crass commercialism of Broadway? Or did he only really come into his own when he was freed from European snobbery? The answer is that both opinions are somewhat true and somewhat false. Rather than treat Weill's work as two separate careers, a European one and an American one as most commentators seem to do, Foster Hirsch treats Weill's career as a single entity. Hirsch's KURT WEILL ON STAGE is a superb chronological overview of Kurt Weill's work for the theatre, showing the logical evolution of his work. Weill became a world famous celebrity by age 30 as a result of his sensational THREEPENNY OPERA and MAHAGONNY. With the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, Weill wisely fled Germany, ending up in America after a period in Paris. But could he succeed in a new country and a new culture? Many distinguished European artist-refugees of that period simply could not adapt and faded into obscurity. Weill determined that he could succeed by writing in an American idiom. He made the transition quite smoothly, creating a string of popular Broadway shows that spawned hit songs like "September Song" and "Speak Low" before dying of a heart attack at age 50. At the time of his death he seems to have been just another Broadway composer, but with the passage of time, Weill's reputation has grown and he is now recognized as one of the 20th Century's great composers. In Hirsch's book, Weill's American shows are revealed to be a continuation of the innovative thrust of THREEPENNY OPERA. Just as he had worked with the prodigy Berthold Brecht in Germany, in America he collaborated with the nation's most prestigious writers, including the Pulitzer Prize winners Paul Green, Maxwell Anderson, Ira Gershwin, Moss Hart and Elmer Rice. Among his other collaborators were Ogden Nash and a pre-MY FAIR LADY Alan Jay Lerner. He worked with such noted directors as Max Reinhardt, Elia Kazan and Josh Logan and choreographers George Balanchine and Agnes DeMille. Mary Martin had her first starring role on Broadway in ONE TOUCH OF VENUS. Gertrude Lawrence made a huge hit in LADY IN THE DARK, which also catapulted Danny Kaye and Victor Mature to fame. And of course, there was Lotte Lenya, the German star whose unorthodox marriage to Weill is still confounding to most people. She had affairs with members of both sexes before, during and after the marriage to Weill; He made no secret of his affairs with other women. But they had an unbreakable bond that went beyond sex. Lenya devoted her life to promoting his work after he died and achieved her greatest fame late in life.
Hirsch keeps his opinions of the work fairly restricted, which I appreciated. The only Weill score he really seems to denigrate is LOST IN THE STARS. (I have to agree with him, though.) This is not really a biography of Weill. The biographical aspects of the book are very sketchy. They are there to provide a context for the work. I enjoyed this book enormously and listened to all my old Weill recordings (and bought some new ones) during the weeks I was reading it. There will probably be a revival of interest in Weill with the arrival of the new Broadway show LOVE MUSIK, which deals with the relationship of Weill and Lenya. KURT WEILL ON STAGE provides an excellent overview of Weill's life and work that I would recommend to anyone interested in the subject.
Inspiration for those who write for the musical stage.......2006-05-30
Kurt Weill On Stage, a scholarly study published in 2002 by Foster Hirsch, is an outstanding overview of the theatrical career of one of the most talented and ambitious composers writing for the stage in the 20th century. Hirsch has access to the excellent materials of the Weill-Lenya Research Center and the support of the Kurt Weill Foundation for Music; he supplements the vast array of correspondence and interviews available to him with interviews and accounts of the creation of the works from participants and spectators. He writes compellingly about Weill's gifts as musical dramatist and collaborator. The book is utterly inspiring to anyone (like me) who has ambitions to write for the musical stage.
A Biography that focuses on Weill's enitre career.......2003-07-18
Too often, scholarly work on Kurt Weill focuses mainly on his German career in the 1920s-- "The Threepenny Opera," "Mahagonny"-- but Weill had a career that extended well into the 1940s as a Broadway composer, and Hirsch's book explores both aspects, although it is clear he's a fan of Weill's later American work.
I would recommend this book as a suppliment to Ronald Sanders' biography "The Days Grow Short," the standard of Weill biographies. However, Hirsch has access to different primary sources that Sanders did not have in the 1970s, and therefore can provide a different perspective. There is also a great deal of text devoted to Lotte Lenya, Weill's wife.
It has been criticzed that Hirsch's book deemphasizes musical analysis, which is true, but that is not the purpose. Analyse the music yourself or find the writings of Kim Kowalke for musical analysis.
I found this book enjoyable and a good supplient to many other Weill biographies on the shelves

This is short and to the point: Arafat is a murderer! He is a full Terrorist.
What more is there to say?
The only thing more disgusting that Arafat are those who defend him.
How can Americans defend him when he admittedly ordered the deaths of Americans?
Interesting, not the best biography.......2003-11-01
First off their is nothing 'misunderstood' about Mr. Arafat as this book contends. The authors think somehow that just because someone murders children is no reason to condemn him or even critique him. To begin with the bias does not help this book. ALthought he authors ahd much access to Arafats people they seem to have been taken in by some of his propoganda, something the PLO is expert at.
Their are only a few books on Arafat. "Arafat terrorist or peacemaker' by Hart is the most biased towards arafat. 'Arfat: defender to dictator' by ABurish is one of the more ciritcla ones. two new biographies of Arafat have recently been released one is biased and the other one is more nuetral. I would have to say this book is the worst of all of them. THis volume doesnt uncover much new evidence and yet it also fails to give a critical history of the PLO. The PLO was invovled in almost taking over and destroying two countries, Jordan and Lebanon. The PLO was thrown out of Syria and Egypt for these very reasons. Arafat himself, despite his success at survival, is not a lovable character, certainly not as lovable as the authors make him out to be. Harts volume is more insightful while Aburish's is more palistinian oriented.
The saga of Arafat is not over and we will need to wait for a full appraisal of his life. The recent resignation of Abbas does not bode well For Arafats leadership and neither does the rise of Hamas. This book is dated and its not thats special.
A Decent Review of Arafat's Life.......2001-07-22
I recommend this book to anyone seeking to gain a deeper understanding of Yasser Arafat's life and role in both the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the internal politics of the Arab world. Based on an series of interviews conducted by the authors as well as primary documents (many of which are provided in translation at the end of the book, a useful bonus), this book chronicles the life of Arafat from his early days in Cairo and Jerusalem up to about 1990, and throws in a basic history of the Arab-Israeli conflict to boot. This book is at its best and most readable when it relays the personal reminscences of Arafat, his aides, and his rivals in the Arab world, who provide a perspective upon the major events of the Arab-Israeli conflict that you cannot find elsewhere. Also to its credit, as other reviewers have mentioned, this book provides a great amount of information on the various Palestinian factions comprising and outside of the PLO, and the characters behind each one of them (although it manages to largely ignore certain major players, such as Abu Nidal).
This book does, however, have several major flaws which relegate to secondary status in a library of books on the Middle East. Firstly, the book is a bit too biased towards Arafat, much like Patrick Seale's "Assad", which fawns upon the late Syrian dictator. One can excuse the affection they display for Arafat, however, as it was probably necessary in order to gain such impressive access to the Chairman and his inner circle. Still, one would have liked to see the comments of Arafat and his associates treated with greater critical analysis and balance. Furthermore, the authors' prose and organization leaves much to be desired. They lack the compelling narrative voice of a Thomas Friedman, Edward Said, or Bernard Lewis, resulting in a text that often comes across as very dry and stilted, particularly in historical background passages. They organize the book episodically rather than chronologically, which could result in great confusion regarding the timeline of events for someone not already very familiar with modern Middle Eastern history. Finally, this book tries to do far too much in a single volume. It begins as a very personal account of Arafat's life, yet at times abandons the story of Arafat entirely and becomes a generic history of the Arab-Israeli conflict. It is as though the authors wrote several separate books, took a few chapters from each, and threws the pages together. The result is a disjointed, often haphazard history of the Arab-Israeli conflict with slightly more emphasis on Yasser Arafat than is usual in such works.
In sum, this book has merit and provides certain insights and primary information not to be found elsewhere. It is not suitable as an introduction to the Arab-Israeli conflict, but should be read only after one has already acquired a basic familiarity with the subject matter. It is otherwise a useful addition to the library of the serious student of Middle Eastern history.
Arafat + History of the PLO.......2001-01-15
This book was a great book. Not only does it serve as a biography of Arafat, it also serves great as a general history of Fatah, the PLO, and the struggle for Palestinian liberation. So what if it calls legitimate attacks against Israel terrorist attacks? It is a small matter in this case since everything else is pretty unbiased. Even as someone who has a pretty good knowledge of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, one thing I appreciate is having it spelled out to me that the PLO is an UMBRELLA organization that comprises Fatah, PFLP, DFLP, Saiqa etc... And that Arafat the leader of the Fatah faction and for a time not the leader of PLO soon became that leader in 69. Hence we now have his association with PLO/Fatah faction. For the longest time my mind was just a muddle until I was able to order these various liberation organization in time and space. I also have alot more respect for Arafat as a person devoted to the Palestinian cause. I have been a bit more on the extreme side previously and currently, however, I can see the definite advantages of a political solution. I liked this book and found it highly informative. I learned alot. If you want to learn about Fatah, the PLO, and Yasir Arafat, definately get this book.
My only problem with the book is the last chaper from "Oslo to Hebron". It should have been broken up into several better written pieces. However, I appreciate the addition of this chapter in the 97 print. The story is still unfolding.

Although a bit dated, the book gives a good synopsis about Arafat's life as well as the history of the PLO. Learned quite about Araft. The list of people they interviewed is quite impressive; those people they did interview make the book what it is. Very easy to read and engrossing as well.
