Book Description

Michael Zatarain, a writer and insider in Louisiana politics, has written the definitive biography of one of the most controversial figures in the 1980's American political arena: David Duke. In researching "David Duke: Evolution of a Klansman," Zatarain discovered that David Duke did not fit into the standard mold of the ignorant, untutored bigot. Duke is articulate, charismatic, appears educated; and he is dedicated to the cause of "white rights", as Duke has coined his openly racist agenda.

Duke won a stunning victory in his race for a seat in the Louisiana legislature, thus becoming the only former grand wizard of the Ku Klux Klan ever elected to public office in America. In the summer of 1990, David Duke was a serious candidate for the U.S. Senate, with early polls suggesting he would challenge the three-term incumbent he ran against.

In researching this comprehensive work, Zatarain spent hundreds of hours interviewing. He spoke with Duke's family, former class-mates, political allies and enemies, Klan members, and Duke himself in an attempt to understand the thinking behind his radically racist crusade. In fact, Zatarain interviewed David Duke more than 50 times, for a total of over 100 hours, in the preparation of this fascinating and thoroughly researched account.

2 out of 5 stars Take out Author bias and it would be OK.......2001-02-28

Even though every other word in Zartarian's book seemed to be racist this and racist that. The book never proved that David Duke was a racist. On the contrary it showed he was always looking for peaceful ways to advance the civil rights of white people. He helped with boarder patrol to keep out illegal aliens and has helped crusade for equal treatment for white people. He has never been accused of violence. This book, while calling David Duke a racist, shows that he continually encouraged peaceful demonstrations and was even arrested at one and charged with an erroneous charge. Zartarian is to busy pointing his finger and name calling to be taken very seriously.

1 out of 5 stars Poorly Done Book About David Duke.......2000-12-17

This book while featuring extensive interviews of Mr. Duke and well researched was poorly written. The author was hypocritical in the fact that he claims we should all love one another and forgive each other. Yet, Zatarain though does not practice what he preaches. Zatarain seems to despise Duke even though Duke has remarkably changed. Zatarain does not even realize that Mr. Duke is a man who has developed and grown spiritually and mentally. David Duke is no longer a former Klansman but a individual of gracious compassion towards his fellow man. Zatarain should take his own advice and reaccess Mr. Duke accordingly. I recommend that the reader should view Mr. Duke's side of the story also by reading: My Awakening by David Duke. Duke explains who he is in his book. It is a good read.

1 out of 5 stars More liberal garbage.......1999-01-10

As is typical of anti-white hatemongers, the author goes to great lengths to imply, manipulate and misrepresent Duke's life and beliefs. I just read David Duke's powerful autobiography "My Awakening" and I would recommend it to anyone interested in learning the truth behind the liberal-Jewish lies. Sample chapters of Duke's book can be found on his

5 out of 5 stars He Leaves the Toilet, and Fails to Flush -- Why?.......1998-07-07

It has been claimed that David Duke always leaves two fresh turds in the toilet and fails to flush them. This intensely compelling study of Duke explains why he is compelled to engage in this seemingly criminal behavior. Explore the as-yet-unsolved mystery of Duke's bathroom habits as he wanders from loo to loo throughout Loosiana in search of meaningful employment. Is he a Tidy-Bowl man for blue-collar whites? A Republican henchman for the shady businessmen of St. Tammany Parish,? Did he fall in love with the Northern girl when he was an adolescent? Or is he simply a man who never learned that common courtesy demands that one must leave the tap running while farting in the guest bathroom? Whatever the case may be, Duke is still guessing -- and so are we.

4 out of 5 stars How the David Duke Phenomenon Occurred.......1997-11-05

Based largely upon personal interviews with those who knew David Duke best, his earliest political friends and enemies, Zatarain's work has succeeded in revealing the secret origins of the "Duke Phenomenon." Chapter 13 is an especially interesting section because it discusses Hamilton Barrett at great length, the young man from liberal San Francisco who we know advised Duke to establish his "Civil Rights Campaign for Whites."

Book Description

William Griffith Wilson, cited by "Time" magazine as one of the hundred most influential individuals of the twentieth century, is better known as Bill W., cofounder of Alcoholics Anonymous. In this book, Matthew J. Raphael, himself a member of A.A. (and writing here under a pseudonym, in accordance with A.A.'s tradition of anonymity), presents a revealing new look at both the legendary Bill W. and the private Mr. Wilson, who tried to live apart from his own celebrity.

4 out of 5 stars Required reading for the curious........2005-12-27

Literary scholar and professor of English, John W. Crowley, writing under the pen name Matthew J. Raphael, renders a refreshing perspective on the life of Bill Wilson, founder-in-chief of Alcoholics Anonymous.

With "Bill W. and Mr. Wilson" Crowley expanded his personal bibliography of works pertaining to alcoholism and drinking, including "The White Logic: Alcoholism and Gender in American Modernist Fiction" (1994), "Drunkard's Progress: Narratives of Addiction, Despair, and Recovery" (1999), and most recently, "Drunkard's Refuge: The Lessons of the New York State Inebriate Asylum" (2004).

Like other recent Wilson biographers, Crowley critically examines key events in Wilson's story and flirts with exposé. Unfortunately, the criticism goes only as far as an adoring fan of Bill Wilson could permit. Crowley has to be careful not to lose his AA readership at the same time he has to preserve his own faith. It's a slack tightrope, but casual readers will be left believing he has made it to the other side safely. Others will see the length of the rope and draw their own conclusions.

This book is an absolute must-read for anyone with an interest in the origins of Alcoholics Anonymous.

5 out of 5 stars For thoughtful, intelligent readers, it gets no better..........2003-02-28

I was given this book as an early gift for my 5-year sobriety birthday. In April 1998, I took what I hope was my last drink. In April 2003, "God willin' and the creek don't rise," I will celebrate that 5-year milestone. I've read all the AA-approved treatments of our co-founders and their lives, and much of the non-conference-approved canon on the life of William G. Wilson. This book quickly became my favorite because of its honesty. Rather than painting Bill W. as God's special instrument, divinely appointed to save us drunks and led by God as if by puppet strings, this book paints an appropriately complex picture of a real human being -- a drunk like me. Raphael's take on Bill W. is based on tremendous research and a great deal of thought, as well as the wisdom of long-term, "good" sobriety. The writing is lucid and readable, though I did have to consult the dictionary twice. (I don't mind that, though -- being stretched a little. Good books should do that, don't you think?) For anyone interested in AA's legendary cofounder, I give this book a 5-star recommendation. It doesn't get better than this for thoughtful members of the recovery community.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2000-10-17

I picked up this book after finishing Francis Hartigan's fine biography of Bill Wilson. I simply could not finish this book. "Raphael," the pseudonym of the author used in accordance with AA's 12th tradition, does a slip-shod job of reserching this subject, and mainly spends his time writing textual rifs based on his own interior monolog.

This kind of writing seemed OK in the 70s, but now that Raphael and I have sobered up, it doesn't seem very interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it, Read it! Think about it!.......2000-08-09

Only 3500 copies initially published. Sure to be a cult book like Igor Sikorsky's "Aa's Godparents : Three Early Influences on Alcoholics Anonymous and Its Foundation : Carl Jung, Emmet Fox, Jack Alexander" and copies will be hoarded and in great demand. The cover of the book is outstanding, from a painting, NIGHTHAWKS by Edward Hopper 1942, its compelling.

The book, like its cover, also is compelling. The author has an easy to read but euridite and somewhat pedantic style that once I became used to it was very comfortable. Its been a long time since I encountered the terms termagant or fin de siecle.

The facts and narratives are always interesting and I find myself agreeing and disagreeing with a number of statements and conclusions but I have to think them out. Items covered extremely well are existentialism, deflation in depth, desire for salvation, The Varities of Relegious Exerience, and the list goes on. That it has compelled me to think out some preconceived views is what I find to be the best characteristic of this book. Read the book and "Let your response happen."

Factually it is nicely done. I admire and respect the author's endeavors.

That said, there are several holes that I wish had been explored:

The Hebrew and Greek concept of "Metanoia" is mentioned in a shallow passage that dismisses it as a purely "Protestant" concept. Father John Doe's, Ralph Pfau, writings would be a place to start. Repentance is more than confessing and saying you are sorry... (there are more than 4 steps!)

Where o where is any reference to Emmet Fox? The Sermon on the Mount has been called the "Little Big Book" and there are several histories where it is noted that it was given out at meetings before there was a big book. The author did a wonderful job of tying linage back to the (Shoemaker, Buchman) Oxford Group, I found myself wishing he had done the same with Emmet Fox. (The Sermon on the Mount is still AA approved literature.)

Several Long/Old/Seasoned Timers have mentioned that Bill, while writing the 164 pages at the mystical white kitchen table, constantly used and referenced the Bible, New Testament, and the book of James. I would have liked to have seen this aspect covered with the same ability the author showed with Nell Wing's viewpoint.

Bill W has a pamphlet which is AA approved and published where he addresses an AMA medical conference. In it he simultaneously describes the program along three tracks - 1) Psychological, 2) Philosophical, and 3) Spiritual. I found myself hoping the author was going to cover this material. Alas, no such chapter.

But it was a great book, I wanted more of the Author's reasoned, diligently researched and insightful conversational text. Even though I did not completely or necessarially agree, I really enjoyed the process of the reading experience. I truly enjoyed the book. It made me think, made me agree and disagree, informed me, and affected me. I really would like to have seen it be twice as long.

In the stepping stones section where the author discribes Lois W. as saying that Bill W. did truly achieve humility was wonderfully led up to, framed, and presented. I felt, se finis, as if Bill was saying to me, out of this book, "True ambition is to walk humbly and to live usefully under God's Grace."

Well Done! Bravo

      Book Description

Relying on the existence, in a complete market, of a pricing kernel, this book covers the pricing of assets, derivatives, and bonds in a discrete time, complete markets framework. It is primarily aimed at advanced Masters and PhD students in finance. -- Covers asset pricing in a single period model, deriving a simple complete market pricing model and using Stein's lemma to derive a version of the Capital Asset Pricing Model. -- Looks more deeply into some of the utility determinants of the pricing kernel, investigating in particular the effect of non-marketable background risks on the shape of the pricing kernel. -- Derives the prices of European-style contingent claims, in particular call options, in a one-period model; derives the Black-Scholes model assuming a lognormal distribution for the asset and a pricing kernel with constant elasticity, and emphasizes the idea of a risk-neutral valuation relationship between the price of a contingent claim on an asset and the underlying asset price. -- Extends the analysis to contingent claims on assets with non-lognormal distributions and considers the pricing of claims when risk-neutral valuation relationships do not exist. -- Expands the treatment of asset pricing to a multi-period economy, deriving prices in a rational expectations equilibrium. -- Uses the rational expectations framework to analyse the pricing of forward and futures contracts on assets and derivatives. -- Analyses the pricing of bonds given stochastic interest rates, and then uses this methodology to model the drift of forward rates, and as a special case the drift of the forward London Interbank Offer Rate in the LIBOR Market Model.

While the description sounds intersting, the book turns out to be a horrible read. Not only do most sections read like a rough set of lecture notes, they are also quite often poorly structured. Most importantly, the authors seem to be confused about simple concepts from mathematics and probability (like differentiability of functions and properties of expectations of random variables).

        Book Description

The theory of asset pricing has grown markedly more sophisticated in the last two decades, with the application of powerful mathematical tools such as probability theory, stochastic processes and numerical analysis. The main goal of Asset Pricing -Discrete Time Approach- is to provide a systematic exposition, with practical applications, of the no-arbitrage theory for asset pricing in financial engineering in the framework of a discrete time approach. Useful as a textbook on financial asset pricing, this book will also appeal to practitioners in financial and related industries, as well as to students in MBA or graduate/advanced undergraduate programs in finance, financial engineering, financial econometrics, or financial information science.

        Book Description

Just as life is often described as a road one takes through the aging process, Wilkinson's experience rebuilding a Porsche is the exit ramp that leads straight into his garage to a world of wires, leather trimmings, and memory pit stops with each turn of the 911 manuscript.
Quirky, cool, entertaining, and opinionated, Wilkinson's rebuilding project leads to inspired digressions on his life. Learning about the inner workings of a car is also a lesson in tracing the thought-streams of the human mind. While rebuilding his car, Wilkinson waxes eloquent on the history of Porsche, American engineering and culture, personal status, his unfulfilling stint as editor of Car and Driver, his love of flying and all things mechanical, not to mention the integrity of wedding dress silk when it's woven amidst engine pistons. According to Wilkinson, "Most of the work that my Porsche required, I was confident I could do myself. Turning nuts and bolts, replacing pieces and parts, disassembling and reassembling, rewiring and renovating were within my basic-competence envelope. Anybody who can overhaul a lawnmower knows how a car engine works. Anybody who can drive a vacuum cleaner or polish shoes can redo a car interior. Anybody who can read a home-wiring diagram can at least begin to fiddle with a car's electrical system." He makes it all sound so easy. Yet, the expensive misadventures he had while rebuilding the German masterpiece were like mirrors of a life experience; the eventual purr of the redone motor felt like a long-awaited jaunt upon a road temporarily closed, and the traveling sure was sweet.

        Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable light read with enough technical details to be interesting........2007-10-10

Wilkinson is a true character and he spins his experiences in restoring a pseudo-classic Porsche 911 (okay, to a true Porsche nut they're all classics) into an entertaining tail. He's an amusing cross between Tim Allen's character from Home Improvement and that uncle your parents don't talk about much because of the nutty things he's done. Strangely these characteristics endear you to him and as a pilot and aircraft owner I enjoyed (and frequently cringed at) his diversions into his experiences as a pilot and aviation editor. Speaking of this the book is rich with diversions into other aspects of his life tangential (or not) to the car project. For some this adds a lot and in general I enjoyed these but I could see where some might find it too fragmented and distracting. Overall though his series of life experiences, including those directly related to the books primary subject matter make for a fun and interesting read.

He's clearly an individual for whom there is no substitute for hands-on experience and the process is more important than the end goal. He articulates well what he's learned and, while the book is not bogged down with technical details, he discusses enough of these to keep a gear-head reasonably happy. No one would restore a car using this book as a manual but there's definitely something here for the technically inclined.

All in all it's a pretty easy and light read and a lot of fun. Perfect as a weekend read for the Porsche fan but with, I think, much broader appeal than that (general car nuts, pilots, those interested in 60's civil disobedience, etc.).

        3 out of 5 stars Why buy a Porsche?.......2007-07-27

Before I even opened the book, a question came to mind. Why buy a Porsche? I have a number of buyer's guides and when I read them I am amazed that the company is still in business. How can they survive selling a car which has a leaking sunroof for 20 years??? German engineering is good, why can't they fix that quickly? Anyway, one buys a Porsche because it is a PORSCHE! That is what I got from the book. I did wished he had talked more about the car than other stories but the man obviously has a very full life.
Those cars have quirks and need a lot of care. If you are going to buy one, don't spend all your money on the purchase of it since you will need a lot for maintenance. Learn to be a mechanic too. If you want a reliable automobile that won't need to be the center of your attention, buy a Toyota. What is the fun in that? This book helped me see more what Porsches are about, PASSION!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Even better than "Man and Machine".......2007-05-27

I really enjoyed reading this book. There are probably a ton of readers and car-nuts out there who can sympathize with Wilkinson's view while laughing at the way it is told. The Gold-Plated Porsche is a fantastic read.

5 out of 5 stars Busted knuckles and oily finger nails. Intelligent and funny........2007-02-14

In reviewing a few of the other reviews, it seems evident that there are two split camps with varying degrees of appreciation for Wilkinsons 'Gold Plated Porsche'. The book centers around the purchase and subsequent restoration of a Porsche 911 and the author skillfully introduces his own memoirs with several chapters of a chequered and adventurous past. The book is a great account of the authors mechanical apptitude blended with a self-depreciating sense of humour creating a very entertaining and worthwhile read. Personally I deeply enjoyed it and 'The Gold Plated Porsche' ranks as one of my favorites in the motorhead section of my library. Intelligent, funny and a light hearted read.

1 out of 5 stars save 8 bucks, and see it on the web.......2007-01-25

A dimestore paperback with a $4.90 premium because he writes the word "Porsche" in the title. not a picture of his exploits within a hundred miles of the book. But ever the publicity hound, he then posts the porsche pictures and much more succinct synopsis on the net! whatta ripoff to the book buyer.

Ok, so he made his nut off my book purchase, but if you REALLY want to see pictures, not just read about this project, and also read many many more of his "amusing" articles for free, just go to the Falco aircraft website, where he is more verbose than he was in this book!

get there quick google "FlatSix.html" then tool around under his aircraft for sale listing (already for sale again by the second owner, smart move after you read the Black and Decker shortcut) (lookup F.8L Falco, VH-SWF in the sale listings to find his articles)

save yourself five bucks plus postage and actually see the restoration. for free, immediately.

The author walks you through several different hand and machine applique procedures. I am working on the "calandar" quilt, and am enjoying every minute of it!

        Book Description

Like its subject, this book is versatile - both practical and inspiring. Author Kira Obolensky shows how to transform a garage into a greenhouse, library, studio, apartment, or workplace. Inspiration comes from a survey of unusual garages, from hand-carved garage doors in New Hampshire to a midwestern milkman's wacky garage museum to the legendary birthplace of Apple computers in Steve Wozniak's California garage. This colorful celebration of the many possibilities of the humble garage features dozens of color illustrations and over 200 color photos.

5 out of 5 stars American history of architecture and lifestyle.......2007-02-15

This book is beautifully photographed and the scope is enormous. The author covers an enormous variety of handsome solutions to storage and leisure time which actually become an historic perspective. Taunton Press actually publish Fine Homebuilding magazine and I wish there had been more floor plans. This is not a "how to" book but rather a photographic essay. Perhaps, they will add a website or link in future editions for readers who might want to build such garages.

2 out of 5 stars Not garages exactly.......2004-11-08

This book and the great mass of the photos relate not to the garage, ie, a covered space where cars are stored or where a hobbyist workshop is located, but converted space or living space above a garage. If you're interested in creative garage layout, workshop arrangement, automobile-related storage, etc., this is not the book. If your desire is to turn a hardworking garage into a granny flat, this is for you.

1 out of 5 stars Isn't a garage a place to store some things, work, park?.......2004-11-04

The book is almost nothing about the garage you already own. It is about fancy buildings with garage doors to use as offices, dwellings, exhibit spaces, furniture factories, archtectural statements. If you want to keep your car dry, you will need to build another real garage.

My garage will soon be turned into a workshop (and hopefully still park the car in there), and this book has given great ideas. I only wish I could find the book "Your Garagenous Zone" mentioned on page 98 written by Bill West. Garage : Reinventing the Place We Park

1 out of 5 stars INCOMPLETE, Biased book.......2004-12-03

I would never trust anything the American Cancer Society says. They are very biased in favor of expensive pharmaceuticals with cancer-causing side-effects. They are the wealthiest "charity" in America, with cash reserves of $1 Billion.

The Role of the ACS in the War Against Cancer

The verdict is unassailable. The American Cancer Society bears a major responsibility for losing the winnable war against cancer.
The launching of the 1971 War Against Cancer provided the ACS with a well-exploited opportunity to pursue it own myopic and self-interested agenda. Its strategies remain based on two lies -- that there has been dramatic progress in the treatment and cure of cancer, and that any increase in the incidence and mortality of cancer is due to aging of the population and smoking while denying any significant role for involuntary exposures to industrial carcinogens in air, water, consumer products and the workplace.

Most of the funds raised by ACS go to pay overhead, salaries, fringe benefits, and travel expenses of its national executives in Atlanta. They also go to pay Chief Executive Officers, who earn six-figure salaries in several states, and the hundreds of other employees who work out of some 3,000 regional offices nationwide. The typical ACS affiliate, which helps raise the money for the national office, spends more than 52 percent of its budget on salaries, pensions, fringe benefits, and overhead for its own employees.

Salaries and overhead for most ACS affiliates also exceeded 50 percent, although most direct community services are handled by unpaid volunteers. DiLorenzo summed up his findings by emphasizing the hoarding of funds by the ACS.

"Most contributors believe their donations are being used to fight cancer, not to accumulate financial reserves. More progress in the war against cancer would be made if they would divest some of their real estate holdings and use the proceeds -- as well as a portion of their cash reserves -- to provide more cancer services."

Aside from high salaries and overhead, most of what is left of the ACS budget goes to basic research and research into profitable, patented cancer drugs.

The current budget of the ACS is $380 million and its cash reserves approach one billion dollars. Yet its aggressive fund-raising campaign continues to plead poverty, and lament the lack of available money for cancer research, while ignoring efforts to prevent cancer by phasing out avoidable exposures to environmental and occupational carcinogens.

Meanwhile, the ACS is silent about its intricate relationships with the wealthy cancer drug industry and chemical industries.

5 out of 5 stars The Best for Layman Readers on Cancer.......2002-05-02

On the symptom of obstructive jaundice and despite a lack of firm clinical/lab finding of malignant cells from blood tests, ultrasound, ERCP (and cytology) as well as CT Scan, surgeons are of the view that my mother is being attacked by cancer at her bile-duct/head of pancreas. Laparotomy surgery, frozen section, Whipple Procedure and By-pass surgery are suggested for the cure. I knew nothing about cancer and its associated terminologies 6 weeks ago, but thanks to reading this book I begin to have a basic understanding on which I can ask useful questions of doctors/nurses for family decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for understanding cancer and its treatment.......1997-06-10

My son was recently diagnosed with desmoplastic small round-cell tumors and I wanted to learn everything I could about cancer. I looked at many of the hundreds of books available. Informed Decisions was far and away the best book. It provided complete information from diagnosis, to understanding what cancer is, to the various treatment options and their risks versus benefits, to building a support network. This book gave me everything I needed in one place to answer my many questions. Half the battle with cancer is understanding what is going on and what is going to happen. Being educated about cancer makes it easier to deal with the many health professionals involved in the treatment process. If you're going to buy one book about cancer, Informed Decisions is the one! I give it a 10

          Book Description

Good Vibes is a rollicking autobiography that tracks jazz from the turbulent post-war years through the rise of bebop, traversing its changes through the eyes of one of its greatest practitioners. Gibbs's hilarious, poignant, and always fascinating anecdotes reveal little-known attributes and quirks about legendary personalities such as Benny Goodman, Buddy Rich, Steve Allen, Frank Sinatra, Don Rickles, Billie Holiday, and many more. A foreword by Chubby Jackson, a discography, and an index round out this work.

5 out of 5 stars A supreme master of jazz, and a national treasure.......2003-10-06

Some people see the world as a minefield, and some see it as a merry go round. Terry Gibbs sees life as a fun filled playland, doing what he was born to do almost from birth. Son of a Brooklyn band leader who performed at weddings and bar mitzvahs, Terry learned his craft with his dad, and went on to perform with Benny Goodman, and every major jazz artist from 1940 on. He was stopped in his tracks by only one man. A man many of us see as not only the inventor of modern jazz (1943 on) but as an almost religious figure, Charlie Parker. Hearing Parker's playing, for the first time, was such a major event, that I heard Terry say in an interview, he literally was knocked for a loop by the Parker, Gillespie bebop revolution, and had to re-think his position as a player of jazz. For some strange reason, while almost every one around him was addicted, or fooling around with heroin in the fifties, Terry never succumbed to drugs. It can't be because he was a "nice Jewish boy", because other "nice Jewish boys" got wasted, like Serge Chaloff, Red Rodney, Stan Getz, and Stan Levey, among others. I guess Terry was high on life. This book tells it "like it was". What it meant to be a jazz star on planet earth, cica 1940 to the present, with wit, humanity, and a love of life. The cat is still swingin'. Don't deny yourself the treat of this opus.

5 out of 5 stars Good Vibes from a Great Guy and a Great Musician!.......2003-08-30

I really liked this book! Aside from being a jazz player myself, I got a kick out of the stories Terry tells about the people he's worked with, the adventures he's had, his particularly touching story about Buddy Rich giving his drums to Terry's son, Gerry. I mean, we've all heard the stories about Buddy Rich's meanness, but here's the other side of one of the greatest drummers of all time. The same with Benny Goodman--we've heard about "the ray," but Terry gives another perspective on Benny--a brilliant musician who was so out of it he couldn't remember the name of a white pianist in his group on a tv broadcast (though they'd been rehearsing together all week) and refered to him as "Teddy Wilson," whom everyone knew was African American.

The book has all kinds of anecdotes that give the reader an insight into what it's like to be on the road, trying to play the best, most swinging jazz you can with the best musicians you can hire, despite the racial prejudices that relegated great African American players like Terry Pollard to near invisibility off the stand. Also, great passing anecdotes about Bird, Dizzie Gillespie, Woody Herman and his band, and others.

A great read--hard for me to put down. Terry Gibbs is as funny and engaging a narrator as he is in person. If you're at all interested in the history of jazz told from the perspective of the people who played it, this book should be on your shelves.

I have to correct some history here from earlier reviews. Hannah Senesh didn't join the US Military. She went from her native Hungary to live in the British Protectorate territory of Palestine, which is today Israel and Jordan. She volunteered to parachute into Europe, along with other Jews with connections to Europe (and also native speakers of those languages) as part of a special British Intelligence operation. The idea was first proposed to the British High Command by the Israelis. And there are streets named after her in Israel because she is a national heroine.

This is about a Jewish girl named Hannah Senesh who grew up while Hitler's commands were spreading around Europe. She was a brave girl who wanted to save many people who were sent to the concentration camp so she joined the British Air Force, the most courageous rescuers. ALthough many men were interested in her and wanted to marry her, she wouldn't accept. She was never married and died at a young age. Later she was executed by the Nazis at a camp. She is known to be one of the most brave and courageous women.
I read this book because I thought her story was very interesting. This book was aslo recommended by my mom. She also thought this book was interesting because she likes biography.
This book teaches you that being brave can get you where you want. I recommend this book to everybody.
My favorite part in this book was when Hannah Senesh met her mother at the camp and they sent messages to each other across the room. They were so happy to see each other beacuse they haven't seen each other for a couple of years. The part where I didn't like was when she was taken outside and was executed. She didn't deserve to die because she was inisint and didn't do anything bad she was trying to save her people.

          5 out of 5 stars great book.......1999-02-10

It tells about the life of a Jewish family during World War II, and how they had to leave their home. Hannah joined the U.S. Army a few years later after they left Norway. I read this when I was in fifth grade, and I've remembered it ever since. It had a big impact on me, and now I'm an eleventh grader and I still find myself reading it every now and then. I recommend this book to everybody!
