Best Book on Asset Protection.......2006-04-01
I have now read several books on asset protection and this one is by far the best. This author appears to be very knowledgeable, and is not out to sell anything, like some others. Highly recommend.
Seriously outdated and in need of revision.......2004-12-24
This book was probably the best for its time, but is seriously outdated today. For example, the book revolves on the use of foreign asset protection trusts as the centerpiece of an asset protection plan, but doesn't discuss at all the Anderson or Lawrence cases (where those trusts badly failed), or any of the dozen or so other cases where offshore trusts failed, or how to deal with those failures. The book also fails to discuss post-9/11 changes in IRS reporting requirements that now generate easy paper trails for creditors to follow.
Because of all this, it is entirely possible that somebody could finish the book with significant misperceptions about what works and what doesn't. So until the book is revised to bring it into this century it should probably be put in the "it will just confuse you" category.
good intro background on the topic.......2003-03-21
This book is aimed at someone who has some assets to protect but doesn't know the first thing about it. It does an admirable job in explaining in general how creditors get to your assets, along with clear explanations of the principal mechanisms to protect assets. Obviously you should get an attorney who knows this field if you are serious about the whole thing, but this book gives you some background to help you talk to and work with this attorney. Beware of books and websites selling you the Next Greatest Offshore Asset Protection Scheme. This book is much more general and much more credible.
A Good Overview.......1999-01-07
This book is a primer on the topic of asset protection and offers readers a general overview of both domestic and foreign protection vehicles.
One should not buy this book believing it is a practical manual on the topic of estate planning or asset protection. The book is remarkably easy to read and filled with hypotheticals based on a case sample, but it lacks the depth and detail required to be a good primary reference.
A good overview with layman's terms, easy to understand.......1997-10-01
As an attorney who considers himself pretty well versed in the content of this book, I read the book with an intent to review an area of the law I had not practiced in a while. The book was a pleasant surprise to me. The explanations given by Mr. Klueger were accurate and well written in terms anyone would understand, even an old salt lawyer like me. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the nuts & bolts of asset protection strategies, even before the reader goes to his lawyer to discuss his own concerns. The form for a family limited partnership in the back of the book is handy and good reading as an example. I only wish Mr. Klueger had included some additional forms for the various stratagies mentioned in the book. Overall, I'd give it a "well done!"

Required addition to glass buyer's library.......2005-08-24
If you are just starting antiquing and are active in buying and selling glassware, you really need this knowledge. You see a piece of Fireking you have never seen before and the seller want $5 for it. Will you get a bargain or a piece you will live with forever? This book has pictures, sizes and realistic pricing on Anchor Hocking glassware. You can finally find out what that strange piece of glass you bought was used for. If you shop e-bay you can find out that those four Big Top Goblets listed for sale are really tumblers as I did this week.
If you want to sell glassware on E-bay this book will pay for itself. I just wish they would add to the book. I'd pay more. It would be worth it. The book has paid for itself in a month.

I just love Gene Florence's information on collectibles so I purchased this book as well.I was wowed again!This book is VERY in depth about Fire-King and the different types out there.If you are confused about which piece is what -this book will help guide you!There are so many items that I had never seen or heard of before listed and pictured here.It has several color photos on each page!

This is a wonderful resource for a new stitcher or one with experience who wants to learn new stitches. The really neat part is that she illustrates the BACK of the stitch as well. This is, I believe, out of print, so grab one while you can.

Undoubtedly a controversial book, "All Women Are Crazy" takes an unflinching look at the interaction of men and women and dares to declare what few others will say.

This is one of the best finds of the year. The authors provide an excellent psycho-social analysis of both genders in this book -- leaving little to the imagination -- and with each page a smile or two on their face. Not recommended for children, as they would simply not understand this, it takes a seasoned reader to enjoy the history, innuendoes and stimulating banter. It builds a great case for women being crazy, but along with the women, the opposite sex, men, are just as crazy. This is a witty and intelligent book and is a great read.

I started this book being interested in the life and music of Porter Wagoner. I finished it being a little burned out with the subject and glad to be done with it. BUT... I have to admit that I am not really a country music fan in the first place.
It's kind of show-bizy, if you know what I mean.
And I suspect I'm only getting half of the story behind the Porter-Dolly split.
So... recommended if and only if you're a country music buff to begin with.

You have got to read this book! If you like country music. You have got to read this book. If you like the weird side of country music then you have to read this book. Even if you think you know Porter Wagoner this book will give you information that will amaze you.
A rat nibbled part of his ear off when he was a child. He took the engagement ring pretty Miss Norma Jean threw back at him, when he refused to get a divorce, and had it made into a ring for Mel Tillis. He produced an album for preacher Tony Alamo on which Tony sings duets with his dead wife, who Tony had promised to raise from the dead. He brought James Brown to the Opry, and he performed country music to a disco beat. He pioneered the attempt to bring country music to crossover audiences.
This book is not yellow journalism. Based on solid research, some cooperation from Porter, and many interviews, Steve Eng simply tells the amazing story of Porter Wagoner's amazing life. If more of America read this book and knew the facts about Porter, he would take his rightful place as a premiere icon of country music in popular culture.
In here you will find the true story of Porter songs with cult followings like "The Rubber Room" and "George Leroy Chickashea". You'll also hear the unlikely story of his first big hit, "Satisfied Mind". Dolly Parton fans will find loads of information on her years with Porter.
As you can tell, I love this book. I can't imagine a better one being written, although I hope someday that Porter himself will release the autobiography which he has described as "too hot" to publish. But even then you will need this book.

Eng is a constantly provocative writer, with insights into popular culture that resonate far beyond the immediate subject. This is one of the best biographies ever written of a country music star.

Thought-provoking collection.......2004-04-02
Ursula Hegi moved to the US from Germany at the age of 18. She was born one year after the war ended, and she remembers vividly what her elders told her about those years. In her Introduction to _Tearing the Silence_, she states why she wrote this book, and how it helped her identify with her cultural heritage. With the title _Tearing the Silence_ she makes her point very clear: Post-war German immigrants have stories to tell.
Hegi conducted interviews with post-war German immigrants in the US. Most of the stories were similar to her own: born and raised in Germany during, or after, World War II, and immigration to the United States before age 20. Some are children of SS officers, others are children of privates. Some live happy lives and do not focus on the past, others are haunted by what happened.
There are some great stories in the book--very thought-provoking. I was amazed at how some of the same phrases were repeated in all of the stories--even though the interviewees never met each other. Many were told that there parents "...never knew about the Holocaust", and others said "Germans suffered too..."
With _Tearing the Silence_, Hegi provided a much-needed contribution to World War II history, and biography.

Tearing the Silence is one of the most important books that I have read, as I am the child of parents who grew up in the Third Reich. It was a truly rewarding experience reading this book and it helped me understand how others in my situation have been affected by the Nazi aspect of their German heritage. If I remember correctly, though, the author really only interviewed people of the "2nd Generation" born shorty after the war; there are, however, people like myself who were born somewhat later and had to come to terms with their heritage during the 1980s rather than the 1960s. The inclusion of one or two interviews with people in this situation would have added considerably to the book.

"We are not political." This assertion by the German family hosting the senior judge in the 1961 film Judgment At Nuremberg typifies the prevailing attitude of the parents of Hegi's subjects. It lies at the foundation of the "great silence" experienced by Ursula Hegi and other children who had to come to America to discover the Holocaust. Hegi and her peers grew up in a vacuum of information about the Nazi years. Realization came as a shock, disillusioning some, generating anger and resentment in others. But as Hegi's subjects relate, few cast off their roots. Some made pilgrimages to the sites of the Nazi crimes. Others sought understanding from parents who kept them in ignorance. Assembling a collection of interviews with her counterparts, Hegi gives us their viewpoints, life histories and introspections of their pasts. It's a unique and worthy effort.
In trying to reveal the present feelings of German children who came to America, Hegi undertook to understand for herself why Germans remained reticent about the Nazi years. She delved into people's lives through the interviews, asking them to examine their own feelings to see how they equated with her own. Clearly, the responses amazed her with their familiarity. Silence from the older generation and a strong desire to understand the root causes of Nazism in the younger, immigrant population.
The stories told, garnered from twenty three individuals, relate the upbringing and disrupted lives of Germans, usually children, who carry the burden of their parents' origins. American children, cognizant of the Holocaust in ways the immigrant children were not, might characterize their German-born peers as "Nazis," even when it was clearly impossible. For most of the interviewees, the accusation was more mysterious than offending. Confident of their own innocence, whatever resentment arose was usually directed at their families in Germany.
While this book is of great value in bringing the memories of the post-Nazi generation into view, it also poses some interesting questions. Oppressive fathers and submissive mothers aren't a uniquely German phenomenon. We aren't even clear as to whether these dominating parents are viewed as Nazis or sympathizers by Hegi's subjects. The only common theme, unique among immigrants to America, is the Holocaust. Some wonder how "normal" people could have engaged in such barbarity, asking themselves how they would have reacted had they been aware of the circumstances. Hegi, as investigative journalist in this book, is careful to avoid judgment. But the subjects raising these questions pose another: how did they view injustices in their adopted country.
Few current prejudices are related in the interviews. One man admits to discomfort at seeing the "Dots;" South Asians "who "smell bad" and "never offer you a fair profit." The reader cannot help but wonder how these people reacted to the protest movements of the 1960s. Did they react to racial hatred in America with quiet acceptance as their parents had done in Germany? Unlike Germany, the violent reaction to protest was visible on any news channel in America. Did they object to America's most controversial war, or support it? One is left with the impression that these exiles comprised part of Richard Nixon's "Silent Majority" and that they, like the parents they admonish, remained equally silent when confronted by issues of moral weight. What Hegi has done is document again the universal that ethical values remain the province of those who stand to be counted. They are, after all, no more or less than human.
