Book Description

New England native, Union soldier, Freedmen's Bureau agent, and Louisiana planter, Marshall H. Twitchell became the radical political boss of Red River Parish in the 1870s. He forged an economic alliance with entrepreneurial Jewish merchants and rose to power during the first upswing of the southern economy after the war. The Panic of 1873, however, undermined his regime and virtually overnight he went from financial benefactor to scapegoat for northwest Louisiana's failed dreams of prosperity. His life-and-death struggle with the notorious White League has more gut-wrenching suspense than most novels. The first full-length study of Twitchell, Edge of the Sword is edifying, entertaining, and cutting-edge scholarship.

3 out of 5 stars Alive & Well In the South.......2006-07-16

His life-and-death struggle with the notorious White League was started by a group of Pulaski lawyers and judges. It was not a part of the Confederacy at all, formed to protect Southerners from the Northern Carpetbaggers during reconstruction. We still need their protection, as a director of the Carpetbagger Theater hoodwinked $100,000 out of the City Council on false pretenses. She used her trained actress voice and acting abilities to pull one over on the cooperative group, with undercover help from those of her acquaintance who had the ability to hide the truth that she indeed was the owner of the condemned property in a bad neighborhood.

His ordeal was nothing like today when the carpetbaggers have returned to the South 220 years later to rook the dumb Southerners. I was told by a Pulaski native about how the carpetbaggers had to be stopped and they were not only taking from the defeated but from the underlings as well. They were a group of vultures.

5 out of 5 stars Review from the Journal of American History.......2004-04-19

In recent decades, many historians of Reconstruction have been drawn to the story of Marshall H. Twitchell, an idealistic carpetbagger who braved ferocious reactionary violence in postbellum Louisiana. Honest, courageous, and committed, Twitchell was not the stereotypical northern opportunist of southern lore, and he has, as a result, surfaced in studies by Eric Foner, Lawrence Powell, George Rable and other historians who have revised the old Dunning-school interpretation of the carpetbaggers. Twitchell has, nevertheless, remained largely unknown to non-specialists because, until now, no one had written a full-length account of his life. With the publication of Ted Tunnell's superb biography, Edge of the Sword, Twitchell's extraordinary story should reach a wider audience.
In recounting Twitchell's life, Tunnell tells "one of the great stories of Reconstruction."(p.4) Born in Vermont, Twitchell joined the Union Army at the start of the Civil War and fought in most of the major battles in the Virginia theater. Severely wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness when a minie ball entered his skull through his eye, he was left for dead by army surgeons. But after a miraculous recovery, Twitchell went on to be an officer for a black regiment comprised mainly of ex-slaves. Following Appomattox, he became an agent of the Freedmen's Bureau in Bienville Parish, Louisiana. While serving in this capacity, Twitchell met and married a southern woman, Adele Coleman, whom he hoped to someday bring home with him to Vermont. But when Adele refused to move North, Twitchell made the best of his situation, purchasing a modest cotton plantation, moving some of his relatives down from the Green Mountain state, and establishing a small "Yankee colony" in the town of Coushatta.
In 1868 Twitchell entered local politics and, with the support of African-American voters, was elected as a Republican to the state senate where he successfully fought for funding to build black public schools. He also displayed remarkable courage in the face of repeated threats from the Knights of the White Camellia, Louisiana's version of the Ku Klux Klan. In one instance, Twitchell, having fallen asleep in his saddle, avoided assassination when his mule took the wrong road, thus circumnavigating the bushwhackers waiting in the woods ahead. Twitchell's brother Homer was not so lucky, however. In August 1874, while Marshall was away in New Orleans, conspirators killed his brother and six other Republicans in what became known as the "Coushatta Massacre." Undaunted, Twitchell returned to the town despite threats that he would be next. Refusing to be intimidated, he continued to defend the political and economic rights of blacks and poor whites. Finally, in May 1876, a disguised gunman rode into town and shot Twitchell six times with a rifle. Although Twitchell survived the attack, both of his arms had to be amputated. Only then did he leave the South for good.
Throughout EDGE OF THE SWORD, Tunnell places Twitchell's life within the complex context of local and national politics and current historiographical debates. But he does so as part of an evocative narrative that skillfully recreates the dramatic events that make Twitchell's story so compelling. Thus, this work will be of interest to both historians and lay readers. Tunnell is to be commended for writing an important biography of a courageous man who truly believed he was fighting a righteous battle.

It should be called a paper piecing book for log cabins. Since I am not a fan of paper piecing I would have been more careful in my selection.

                Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars first rate resource.......2007-01-18

this is one of the best books on log cabin quilts i've seen--no, it doesn't have basic quilting instruction, but the subtitle says it all "the ultimate creative guide to the most popular and versatile pattern.'

every variation of the log cabin structure is explored (at least i can't think of any other shapes). from the familiar square and pineapple forms to hexagon and triangle and more, there are enough examples to inspire any quilter for years.

the photographed quilts are both authentic antiques and contemporary quilts. many of the 19th and early 20th century quilts look utterly modern.

there's a short but thorough section on the history of the log cabin quilt. then there are sections devoted to the various block shapes.
each of these sections has line drawings of the blocks, some tinted to show pattern. the final section has page on page of graphed alternate settings for the blocks. these are in shades of black and grey. any of these could be photocopied and colored.

i skipped the section dealing with sewing a block. i'm happy with paper piecing, and i don't mind dealing with a large quilt on my domestic machine (well, not enough to send it out to be quilted, anyway!), so i wasn't interested in the authors' suggestions. this book was originally published in great britain, and using fabric as a foundation for piecing is still popular there. the authors also included instructions for quilting as you go.

the reasons for four and not five stars: 1) no paper piecing templates. i know i can draw my own, but i'd rather spend the time and energy sewing. for the basic log cabin and pineapple variations, i can always search my other books or my magazines; for the trapazuid and pentagon and others, i'm on my own. and 2) not much attention is given to uneven log cabin/pineapple.

aside from those two minor drawbacks, this is a wonderful book, with years' worth of potential quilts.

                5 out of 5 stars very informative.......2006-07-03

No disappointment from this purchaser. I had heard about the book from a fellow quilter, and knew I had to have it for myself.

                1 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2005-05-27

More pictures than instructions. As a new quilter, I need more instruction than this book provides.

This book had some excellent plans for larger "leisure" homes. It didn't have much in what I consider the smaller vacation home category. I only found a couple of plans that would have been suitable for a small lakeside cottage/ski cabin. If you're looking for a more relaxed plan for a regular size house, this could be your book. But if you're looking for smaller homes, I would recommend the Sunset "Vacation Home Plans" book.

                        Book Description

A central tenet of Adlerian psychology and a timeless intervention strategy, encouragement gives children a sense that they have a place in society and, in turn, secures their investment in themselves as a group. As we witness rising levels of violence, depression, anxiety, and suicide among the nation's youth, this classic discussion of how to encourage children to engage in learning assumes renewed, even increased importance. Discouraged children disengage from learning and from society. Encouraged children belive themselves capable of overcoming adversity, of meeting life's challenges; they feel the value of contributing to the world around them, and both society and the child benefit.

Rudolf Dreikurs, a colleague of Alfred Adler, and Don Dinkmeyer, distinguised author and educator, provide teachers, mental health professionals, and parents with practical strategies for using encouragement in their work with children. They use case studies from actual classroom situations to illustrate their methods, resulting in a concise, easy-to-read volume that continues to be indispensible to anyone working with children.

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement is the Foundation for Everything.......2003-07-29

It is amazing that this book was first written so many years ago and has been kept such an undiscovered secret until now. This book, written by a great counselor educator (Don Dinkmeyer) and one of the historic geniuses in child development (Rudolf Dreikurs), is essential in an era when the pressure is building on schools, teachers, and students to produce. Schools are becoming the single greatest contributor to discouragement in children, and discouragement is the basic reason for acting out, poor grades, classroom discipline problems and, yes, even for the use of drugs and problems related to gang activity. If every teacher and parent could learn the art of encouragement, we would have children who were a lot happier and who could achieve more fluidly.

This book helps adults learn the art of encouragement and gives plenty of examples about how to put it to work at home and school. I recommend it to every one. It ought to be our goal that every child who enters school discouraged, leaves encouraged. And every child who comes to school already encouraged should stay that way. This is the blueprint for how that can happen.

5 out of 5 stars Great help and counseling for parents of infants/toddlers.......2000-09-09

I have read several books about 'early learning and development' of children and have discovered some points in common. All these books encourage parents to start to develop children's capabilities as soon as possible (1 year is better than 2 year-old, 6 months is much better and 1 month! is really MUCH MUCH better). Don't be fooled by thinking that this 'little thing' is unable to hear you, see you or understand you. He/she really does and his fast-pace growing brain stores all you teach him (good or bad). You can teach your child absolutely whatever you want, because the child's brain is developing an incredible rate. The training you provide him/her helps to create more synaptic connections that later will lead to greater ability to reason and memory. Don't think your baby is not getting the 'training' you provide him/her. No matter if you teach maths / reading /languages / music /computing sciences or whatever other subject. The important point is to do it always respecting the children and being conscious that the (quality) time that we spend with our children is the most precious and well-invested time we can share with them. Dinkmeyer and Dreikurs use the approach shown in 'Children the challenge' to improve paths of communication with children, letting the message of love, respect and courage get through. 'Encouraging Children to Learn' complements other classics by Doman like (how to teach maths... or How to teach your baby to read), books that should be in the shelves of all homes where lives a child.

                            5 out of 5 stars Fascinating autobiography.......2006-01-09

Prior to reading this book, I was curious about Rabbi Weiss Halivni. What kind of man, I wondered, would stand up against the left wing of the Conservative movement, at the potential cost of his own career? In reading this book, I have been richly rewarded with an understanding of him. Rabbi Weiss Halivni is searchingly honest, even brave in his degree of self-revelation, as he describes his life in a backward village in Hungary in the lead-up to the Second World War, the troubled psychological dynamics of his family, most of whom were subsequently murdered by the Nazis, his experiences in the death camps, and the course of his career in the United States as a scholar at the Jewish Theological Seminary and then Columbia. He explains the origins and process of his style of Talmudic analysis; an unusual blend of the traditional and the critical analytic methods, coming in part from his grandfather, but also a product of modern scholarship. He laments that he's been unsuccessful in fostering it in his students (they find it too difficult I think).

But it is his self-analysis if his own character, his simultanously anxiety-ridden and courageous life, that makes this such worthwhile reading. I think that he is just not afraid to be different, and he values honesty more than most; his stance on preserving halachah in the face of tremendous pressure from liberal "progressives" at the JTS is one outcome of these traits.

                            5 out of 5 stars a book you'll learn from.......2003-06-24

As another reviewer wrote, this is not just a Holocaust memoir. Halivni writes about his Holocuast experiences, but many others have done the same at greater length. What I got out of this book was:

                            1. His discussion of pre-Holocuast shtetl life: its scholarship, its isolation, its sheer backwardness in many areas (for example, when one relative told the author's grandfather that the boy was "turning modern" because he ate with a fork instead of with his hands, and read secular newspapers). Unless you eat with your hands and avoid newspapers, you will find it much harder after reading this book to believe that Jews should be bound by every custom of their ancestors.

                            2. His attempt to describe his own ideological position: more respectful of traditional halakhah than modern Conservatives, more critical of traditional interpretations than some Orthodox commentators. You can find plenty of books by commentators to Halivni's right, and plenty by commentators to his left, but I would be surprised if you could find any by people who think exactly what he thinks (assuming there are any). As a result, his book is unique or nearly so - and for this reason alone, his book is worth reading and will probably challenge you whatever your views.

Another reviewer said that Halivni is not among the "first rank" of scholars. (I am not enough of a scholar to intelligently agree or disagree). But even if this were the case, I would recommend this book. I've learned quite a bit from people who weren't in the "first rank" of scholars - many of whom, I suspect, are not of Halivni's rank.

3 out of 5 stars Adult Prodigy Manqué.......2001-02-27

Halivni's book will not satisfy those looking for a Holocaust memoir. He is not a professional Holocaust survivor or bad novelist like Elie Wiesel. Rather he is a scholar. He started out as a child prodigy in Talmud, but never had a chance to attend a real yeshiva. After the war he turned down such opportunities to get a doctorate in philosophy and develop academic textual criticism of the Talmud at the Jewish Theological Seminary. He was a very big fish at JTS, but the water turned rancid when they abandoned Jewish law in favor of feminist correctness. He then went to Columbia University, but now every major university offers doctorates in Talmud.

He makes a heartbreaking admission to us at one point. He says he cannot transmit the highest level of his methodology to his students. I would like to be charitable to so long-suffering a man, but doesn't it mean he has failed? What use is a method that exists only in his own head?

Although he never says so, I'm afraid Halivni realized at some point he was not an adult prodigy. If he went to Lakewood with Rav Kotler or Yeshiva University with Rav Soloveitchik he would never have been among the first rank of scholars. He admits to the sin of envy, and that shortcoming drove him to isolation and failure. That, not Auschwitz, is the true tragedy of his life.

5 out of 5 stars An unusual memoir by a remarkable Jewish scholar.......1997-03-12

This small book covers an enormous range of subjects. Chasidic life in a shtetyl, the Holocaust, conflict within the Jewish institutions of higher learning in post war America, the personal psychological impact of being a Holocaust survivor, and the various modes of Talmudic scholarship - Halivin's great accomplishment is to bring meaning to this wide spectrum of topics in few words. This is a book by a serious thinker who is not afraid to risk revealing his innermost feelings and conflicts. A courageous work
