Another View of William Clark.......2006-08-16

James Holmberg has done an excellent job of providing new insight into the Clark family, in particular the relationship between William and his eldest brother by twenty years, Jonathan. ALthough the basis of the book is a set of letters that were uncovered just a few years ago, the information is a fresh look at the Clark we normally view as being part of the word "LewisandClark".
The Journals of Lewis and Clark can tell you a lot about how he acts when he is in a business or military setting, but these intimate letters that he wrote to his brother show that William was a much deeper man that just an explorer. He truly looked up to his brother, and because they lived 200 years ago, that relationship is often lost, especially in since published Clark or Expeditionemorbelia. This is a wonderful book, and if you are trying to get a better persepective of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, this book is a must read to better understand the man that became famous.

This is indeed a book full of history and tidbits that add to our current historical knowledge. I think that for the non-historian, it is difficult to read all of the notes at the end of each letter (usually longer notes than the letters themselves). I would love to see this book with many of the obscure notes removed and just the very important historical facts included to help explain what is being written about. I am loving learning about Lewis and Clark, but this book was more difficult than most.

A TREASURE CHEST OF HISTORICAL NUGGETS.......2002-09-08

This is the kind of book cherished by all lovers of frontier history--historical researchers and genealogists, as well as those who simply love to read about it. Not just a book of letters, but a lusciously annotated treasure chest of biographical information, and not just on the Clarks, but on the frame of frontier history which surrounded them.

The insights on William Clark and York are indeed interesting, but biographical sketches in the notes reveal arcane facts on Daniel Boone, General James Wilkinson, Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson, and many others less known but equally interesting. Mr. Holmberg sometimes indulges in speculation and tentative assertions, but the demarcation between fact and inference is always clear.

The work is handsomely constructed, the font easy to read, the notes easy to follow. A complete bibliography is provided along with a complete index. All and all, a pleasure to peruse, a delight to own.

Excellent Resource.......2002-06-11

Considering how dry the subject material is, I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book is not only a great resource, but quite easily readable as well. I bought the book a while ago, kept staring at it, and just dreaded even starting. But I was needlessly avoiding it, as the material is presented in a easily understandable manner (even a bit of humor from time to time, if you keep in mind we are talking about lawyers writing this...). Highly recommended, particularly with regards to tips on the differences in stock classifications and way that financiers can take advantage of you if you don't understand completely the differences.

Very detailed instructions on "How-To" create your Corp........2001-01-05

For the already somewhat "Business Literate" the Essential Corporation Handbook provide most of the details needed to setup your corporation, initial meetings you must hold and formalities you must adhere to. A very handy reference used often in the early days of forming my corporation. Displays sample of most of the documents you will be dealing with early on. I would have liked to see more detail/advise on how to determine the number of shares to authorize/issue which is I think is a key element or creating a corporation.

Correction-.......2007-07-11

While I am not one to criticize any comment regarding my books, good or bad I do take isssue on the comment- "This does not have foreign pez in it" - much to the contrary. There are a large number of foreign Pez in this book. Everything that had been produced up to the publish date is included in this guide, domestic AND foreign release . This guide does not get into the mini Japanese dispensers, those are licensed by Pez for Bandai not an actual Pez produced item but a licensed item. There are LOTS of foreign Pez in this guide. -Shawn Peterson

Great book for the pez collector. It lists the American pez releases with some of the variations and a possible value. They are in alphabetical order. Shows some from private collections that you will never see or have...lol...
Has an index for easy look up and a list of terms used in the pez world for the non-pezheads. It IS indeed small enough to put in your purse or backpack to take along on those trips to antique stores, swapmeets, or garage sales. No matter how many times i look at this book i still cannot remember the values so i have to look them up constantly.

This does not have foreign pez in it, but is still an excellent guide. The best of its type on the market i believe.

Old Style Basics.......2001-09-28

If you have a big imagination, you might be able to build an entertainment center with style from this book. All of the plans a basically the same with a few changes to give it a different look. You could say it was not what I was really looking for. I have a widescreen TV that would by no means fit in any of these designs, nor do I even like the "look" of these designs. Too many changes had to be made to give it an up to date size/look.

The description tells of different styles (Shaker, Mission, Country and Contemporary) - this is relatively untrue. They have taken a basic design and reworked it to have a few different designs. This book is good for non-woodworkers who do not want to spend the cash on an entertainment center (actually this is partially true, since you will need a router, a table saw, a band saw, a drill press and clamps... so you might as well buy the entertainment center!)

It has an okay section on making cabinet doors and building drawers.

I guess my major gripe about this book is that I really don't like the basic design, and all other designs are rehashes of this one. I have build my entertainment center without using this book.

Many errors and missing steps make for very poor plans.......2000-11-21

I bought this book with the hope that by using somebody elses plans (rather than drawing my own) I would not have to worry about calculating all the dimensions and designing as I go along. Unfortunately, this book has so many errors and ommissions in the plans that you cannot trust any dimension he gives. Parts and steps that are necessary to complete a unit are missing. Don't waste your money on this book. They obviously didn't waste time proofreading it...

This book is fine if you want to build old style entertainment centers, but if you want something a little more modern for your Big screen tv or sound system, this is not the book you want.

PLANTATIONS OF BRAZIL.......2006-10-24

Well conceived book on a very interesting subject, that frankly i knew nothing about. The images of these beautiful buildings are crisp and sharp. The text is highly informative and the book is easy to navigate. These "Fazenda's" are really quite spectacular and many of the settings are just breathtaking. Highly recommended, after taking in this book, i feel quite enlightened.

A very beautiful collection of the best traditional "fazendas" depicting the wealthy lifestyles of that period. A great resource for portuguese colonial furniture with Brazilian hardwoods - a great combination !

A study in genius with its blessings and drawbacks.......2001-08-15

Naxos is doing a wonderful job with its emerging "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, more recently one of Chopin and now two more, Liszt and Beethoven. Both are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, a discography--and finally something I thought I would never see, the text of the recording's narration. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

The Liszt set starts with the sound of artillery, the Beethoven with the sound of a cork popping. A good way to grab your attention, surely, but also to make you think they packaged the wrong disc in the jewel case!

Written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann, the production enlists some excellent actors to play the people in the composer's life. In the "Beethoven" set (8.558024-27), we have Bob Peck as the usually tormented voice of Beethoven, who is joined by David Timson, Neville Jason, Elaine Claxton, and Karen Archer as the voices of Beethoven's friends, critics, and loves. The musical selections are drawn from the bottomless well of Naxos recordings.

As I commented with regard to the other sets, the music is well chosen but some of it simply lasts too long for those who are eager to get on to the facts of the composer's life. On the other hand, this IS called the Life and Works series, and perhaps a balance is to be maintained between the two aspects.

Beethoven's idiosyncrasies make a good comparison with those of Chopin, the former doing everything he could to call attention to himself, the latter withdrawn--but both acting like bloody fools in so many ways. Perhaps that is the price of genius. The tale of his "Immortal Beloved" is briefly treated here, but it is fascinating to follow his amores, which are invariably with women he could never hope to attain. The most surprising element is his early popularity as a Very Witty Person, an estimate he quickly lost when deafness came upon him.

Along with the other three sets, a both fascinating and informative recording.

A fascinating picture of life in musical Vienna.......1997-02-02

I approached this book with some trepidation, as I am not a fan of biography. Fortunately, this volume is much more than just a life of Beethoven- it is also a fascinating picture of the musical and social life of the Vienna of the early 19th century, with Mozart just dead, Haydn in his late, great years, and Beethoven the young lion of society. Although I call it a picture, it is more of a jigsaw, built as it is of snippets- letters, newspaper reports, bits of gossip, descriptions from contemporary accounts of all types. This has been skilfully done so that it does not feel fragmented, but rather forms a remarkably cogent whole. Apart from the structure, the image of Beethoven that the book creates is also of interest. No misunderstood artist struggling in the garret here, but a young man celebrated by society, the associate of the aristocracy and suitor of several beauties. Yes, this degenerates to some extent as he becomes shut off by deafness and the desire to express more in his music, but he is clearly seen to have retained very strong support. This is a believable biography, and a very capable use of a difficult format.

A Good Beethoven Handbook.......2007-05-29

Burk's Beethoven is a nice handbook, one I have used for years despite the many stronger Beethoven texts in existence. The first half is a solid, standard biography, and the second half a listing of all of his works by groupings into symphonies, sonatas for piano, etc. Many of the works are given a brief description, always with the movements listed. A good index. For the price, this is a solid, useful book on Beethoven you will use again and again. Totally accessible to the average reader. You do not have to have a university education in music to enjoy reading this book.

Of all the books about artist that I have read, this is the best. I first realized that I was reading something special when the discriptions of Beethoven,s personal life began.
