This is a long-overdue study of one of Canada's most important political relationships. Highly readable and engaging, this work details the relationship between Quebec lieutenant Ernest Lapointe and Prime Minister Mackenzie King, showing how the close association of the two affected Canadian history in many important ways.
Lapointe was the dominant French Canadian in federal politics from the start of the 1920s to the early years of the Second World War, serving as Minister of Justice and King's Quebec lieutenant. In return for promoting Liberal policies in Quebec, he was given an unusual amount of autonomy in his constituency, and, because the Prime Minister had a poor understanding of the province and of the French language, he was relied upon to give King the French-Canadian perspective. Lapointe's role in maintaining Liberal party unity, and, by extension, national unity, was crucial. Lapointe was equally important when it came to foreign affairs. He was known to take the lead over King, and the isolationist stance of both politicians served to undermine the League of Nations in its dealings with Italy over the invasion of Ethiopia.
Lita-Rose Betcherman draws on key primary sources for her material, including the Lapointe Papers, the King Papers, the King Diary, and the media of the times. Ernest Lapointe thus documents Canadian politics and society in a rigourous and accessible manner that will appeal to a scholarly and general audiences.

This is the best book I have read to explain the way homosexual people really are. Everyone, including homosexuls, is homophobic to some extent, so that TALKING about what it is like to be gay is just not done. The isolation this causes leads to the despair that so many gay people feel, and the hostility of so many straights. These 70 people are real - just like us, and the interviews are so well edited that the voices are authentic. The stories talk about when each interviewee first realized they were "different", how they struggled to be "normal", and how they found happiness. If you are interested in better understanding how you feel about sexuality - your own, and/or that of a gay person, read this book. Even more important, if you believe that there is much more to a person's identity than his or her sexuality, this book will affirm and support you.

a good "basic" tips book for you to find tips for farther research.......2007-03-28
it listing a lot of tips 7500---however since it list so many tips--- needless to say it can only give a brief bit on each one----its a good starting point of "local treasure stories /tales" in your state & area that you then must go and do the "leg work" to flesh out the rest of the story. if you are a research based type hunter its a good starting point--- "tips" to get you started ---if you expect ---"well go the the corner of elm and jones street in zippytown,florida and walk seven feet east --dig five feet down and you'll be set for life ---well get real --if it was that easy the bookwriter would do it. good hunting to all.
Buried Treasure you can Find.......2006-03-27
This book is great. It has many great places to look for treasure in every state. The author has done years of research to find many old ghost towns, buried treasure stories, and many other places. It gives tips on metal detecting, but seems to have been paid by Garrett Metal Detectors to advertise and show their detectors in this book. It also informs you how to find good places to look. This book is a masterpiece and very interesting even if you are not going out to look for lost treasures of yesterday.

This book contains a few interesting and potentially helpful tidbits of information for the treasure hunter. However, most of the information about the "7500 locations" is often little more than can be had from reading the "Welcome to..." signs found as you drive into town. If you expect to have a handy collection of ideas to keep you and your metal detector busy, then this book will be a disappointment.

Great book. I have found two forts and an old gold mining town close to me to hunt in thanks to this book. It really is a good book.

Working with models like the MIG27 Fulcrum, the A-10, and the WW1 Roland Walfisch the reader is shown how with patience and care these and other models can be superdetailed to a very high standard. Very detailed colour photographs and a concise but explanatory text show the modeller how to turn a basic kit model into a show-stopper.

Not recommended for those who would like to actually have time to do antything else but make custom parts. Lots and lots of scratchbuilding, with very little text. Pretty pictures though.

This book is full of photo's and makes the written text more than understandable. This is a must have for modellers, because it's full of tricks and handsome advise how to make your project to a succes.

This is the most impressive volume on child development that I have read. It is a unique effort, presenting reader-friendly and comprehensive information regarding the development of children and adolescents. Although it is written for Pediatricians, the "Perspectives', "Quick Check" behavioral descriptions, and "Heads Up" indicators of difficulty, provide invaluable information for all who work with children. The format, describing clinical issues that may arise at various ages along with brief demonstrative vignettes, is simply outstanding. I highly recommend this book to medical personnel, mental health professionals, and child/adolescent educators because it will add to the competency of all readers. My compliments to the authors.
Exactly what I was seeking.......2000-04-02
I recently entered the world of adolescent psychopathology anddrug abuse. I wanted to read a text that would provide acomprehensive, yet succinct review of child and adolescent development, sprinkled with clinical examples and short discussions of recent research, and noting particulary important developmental highpoints that the clinician or health professional needs to be aware of. The strength of this book is that it accomplishes all that in an exceedingly reader-friendly manner, teaching, but not preaching, pointing out pros and cons, and presenting this difficult topic in a manner that anyone, from the layman to the pediatrician, can reep benefits. The book begins with pre-natal care and systematically progresses to young adulthood. First-time parents may especially benefit by learning the normal course of their baby's development. Parents of teenagers may benefit by an objective explanation of the physiological and associated psychological changes of their children. Researchers may benefit by constructing better targeted interview questions. Clinicians may benefit by learning of alternate or different or increasing number of approaches to pediatric care. And the inquiring mind can simply learn and enjoy.

Excellent intro to Bartok.......2006-06-25
Hippocrene Books had a series of composers, "His Life and Times". My favorites are the Beethoven (by Ates Orga) and this one of Bartok by Hamish Milne. The books are full of illustrations and are also richly detailed biographies. They don't take the place of serious college or grad school research, but they are absolutely appropriate for high school and undergraduate research, or anyone just wanting to get into the story of who Bartok was and why he was such a great composer. First published in 1953, Halsey Stevens's The Life and Music of Bela Bartok was hailed as a triumph of musicology and quickly established itself as the classic text. Stevens combined an authoritiative, balanced account of the Hungarian composer's life with candid insightful analyses of his numerous works. To Stevens, the high point of Bartok's genius was the chamber music, which he assessed was of a quality unrivalled by any other composer of the early twentieth century. But he evaluated Bartok's entire output with mastery, picking out the composer's strengths and weaknesses and conveying the essence of his compositional techniques. Stevens's views have greatly influenced the study of Bartok and Hungarian music over the last four decades. An excellent book on the great Twentieth-Century composer, being both a biography in the usual sense, but also providing definitive analyses of his major works. The detailed description of Bartok's six string quartets, leaves little more to be said of them -- unless you want to go to monographs like Prof. Leo Treitler's Ph.D dissertation on the Fourth Quartet alone. I have read a number of reviews of this book all of which praise Anthony David for his detailed study of the life of Zalman Schocken.
David paints the portrait of a remarkable Renaissance figure, an innovative empire- building businessman , a great patron of the Arts, a humanist, Zionist builder of cultural life in the land of Israel.
Schocken was born in Posen in Prussia, but built a business empire throughout Germany. His department- stores were forerunners of today's Malls. He combined in them a sense of the aesthetic ( Bauhaus architect Eric Mendlesohn was his designer) with a real understanding of the customers' needs.
He also was an autodidact a lover of German and Jewish culture. The shock of his life came with the coming of the Nazis to power, and from then on he shifted most of his activities to Jewish cultural work. He also to a degree recreated a bit of the business empire he had in Germany, in then Palestine and the United States. 'Schocken Books' is one of his cultural monuments. He was the patron of Buber,Scholem, Elsa Lasker-Schuler, and most notably Agnon. Schoken had an eye for talent and an ability to support and sustain it.
One of his major moves was his purchase of the newspaper 'Haaretz' as wedding gift for his son. This would become the Israeli equivalent of the NY Times.
Schocken was also a great patron of the Hebrew University.
Schocken contributed much to the building of Hebrew culture in the land of Israel, and Jewish culture throughout the world.
A highly recommended work.
Zalman Schocken Brought to Life.......2005-05-07
This is a professionally-written biography of the late German-Jewish philanthroper Zalman Schocken. I learned many things from this biography that I hadn't known about his life: that he was actually from Prussian-controlled Poland and thus, was not a "blue blood" German Jew, about his innovations in commerce which lead to the massive successes of his department store chain, and his relationship with other German-Jewish figures in the Zionist movement such as Gershom Scholem, Hannah Arendt, and S.Y. Agnon. I learned that Agnon kept his right-wing and very anti-Arab attitudes out of his books because his 40-year patron, Zalman Schocken, told him to do it. I learned that Schocken Books published a whole line of Jewish-subject-related books in Germany after the Nazis came to power, even exploiting their sepearation laws to be a "Jewish publisher."
Up until the Nazis come to power, Schocken appears to be a man of talent and relevancy, both in the realm of business and also in the realm of Jewish cultural revival. The last 25 years of his life are portrayed as those of a man who has had the cultural and business orientation ripped away from him by Adolf Hiter and in relying on his previously-used models of success and meaning,falling into irrelevance.
The author has worked hard to understand all of the angles of Schocken's life: as a businessman, as a successful autodidact and lover of literature and philosophy, as a philathroper, and even a bit about his personal life and his relationship with his family. The author has also mastered the intellectural and political background in which Schocken's life occurs, both in Germany and then in Jewish-Palestine, which eventually became Israel.
Zalman Schocken was certainally a character and personality of an exceptional and excentric order and this books comprehensively explores all aspects of his life, his business endeavors, his social visions, his philonthropic endeavors, his ideas about culture, Judaism, and his relationships with other people.
