Book Description
This extraordinary collection offers an unsurpassed chronicle of human endurance, resourcefulness, courage, and luck -- in the most perilous circumstances and against the greatest odds. From the depths of the oceans to the highest mountaintops, on every continent, and even in outer space, here are more than twenty riveting stories by explorers, mountaineers, sailors, pioneers, adventurers, and ordinary people who faced mortal peril...and lived to tell about it.
Fiction cannot rival these true accounts, all of which have been selected for the quality of their writing as well as for their inherent drama. Ranging from the time of the conquistadors to the present day, the pieces are almost all written by eyewitnesses and participants -- including John McCain, who endured agonizing torture in a North Vietnamese POW prison; James Lovell, who commanded Apollo 13 during its harrowing return from an aborted lunar mission; and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, who cheated death after crashing his plane in the Libyan desert.
Skillfully edited by John Letterman, whose introductions to each piece provide background and historical context, these memorable stories allow us to experience firsthand the determination and courage of men and women whose lives are on the line. We are transported to Antarctica, where blinding winds and horrific cold torment Ernest Shackleton's men; to the scorching deserts of Arabia, where Wilfred Thesiger is engulfed by sandstorms and punishing heat; to the South Pacific, where the surviving crewmen of the Essex begin an epic 2,000-mile longboat voyage after their ship is rammed and sunk by a whale.
At times inspiring, at times horrifying, and always riveting, this book vividly chronicles the fortitude of a remarkable group of men and women who have written powerfully about the struggle to survive in the face of tremendous adversity.

Master Pattern Included
Sewing swim and action wear will be easy and fun with this book. You can create a one-of-a-kind garment and select the style that looks the best on you. The Master Pattern in this book includes a variety of swimsuits, leotards, leggings and shorts. Many variations are included for one and two piece swimsuits, action wear for biking, gymnastics, aerobics, dancing and skating. With your creativity an endless variety of styles can be made.
The sewing procedures are easy to follow with many clear illustrations, that even a beginner sewer can follow and be able to make professio nal looking garments.
Making your own swimwear and action wear is much easier and faster than you can imagine and you will also save a lot of money, since each outfit takes a minimum amount of fabric. A large variety of fabrics for swim and action wear are available in most fabric stores, many of the same fabrics as used in ready-to-wear.
The multi-sized master pattern is printed on durable white paper with colour coded lines for each size. The patterns are printed on both sides of the paper so we could include as many sizes and designs as possible. Trace the patterns using tracing paper or tracing cloth made of transparent pressed fibers.
All of the master pattern pieces include 1/4? (6 mm) seam allowances. This is the best seam allowance to use when sewing swim and action wear. You can use a regular sewing machine or a serger/overlock machine.
The master pattern includes five sizes from extra small to extra large. Patterns are made to fit specific body measurements. Before you trace the pattern, choose the size by comparing your measurements to the measurement chart. Choose the size closest to your bust, waist and hip measurements. If in-between sizes, choose the larger size. The book gives instruction for making changes on the pattern for the proper fit.
This book has easy-to-follow sewing instructions with clear illustrations and time saving techniques for even the beginning sewer. All styles and creative ideas are shown throughout the book in full colour photographs.

Ballroom Gowns and Lycra.......2006-08-20
This book is very helpful. It comes with an adjustable basic pattern and several design alterations. I'd buy it again.
Very helpful........2005-10-14
I found this book extremely helpful. I haven't sewn in years and started back sewing ice skating costumes with spandex. Spandex can be difficult to work with if you don't know what you are doing. This book really helped me get up to speed quickly. I would recommend it for anyone who is sewing with spandex.

Book Description
Many parents who have experienced the death of a child struggle with painful and at times overwhelming marital problems. Grieving can create great marital distance, and it can magnify those problems that existed before the child's death. Grieving parents often fear that divorce is a real possibility. This book can help.
Based on intensive interviews of 29 couples who experienced the death of a child, this book offers perspectives and advice on common marital problems experienced by bereaved parents. Each couple's problems are unique, but often the problems are connected to couple communication, sexuality, parenting of other children, the use of alcohol and drugs, blaming, and differences in such areas as whether to have another child, how to grieve, how to talk about the child who died, whether to go outside the marriage for support, and what to do with things and spaces that were the child's.
Although the book deals with pain and marital distress, it offers a message of hope. Grieving parents can and do get through the hard times, based on respect for differences, mutual understanding, and shared history.
Customer Reviews:
invaluable guidance for one of life's worst tragedies.......2001-09-12
This book, written by a research psychologist and based on interviews with couples who lost a child, offers wise advice in everyday language rather than abstract jargon. While there are other useful guides available, they deal with each survivor on an individual basis. However, each parent may have different ways of coping which also procede at different rates. The present book is especially valuable because it focuses on the problems that death of a child might generate between the parents and offers (not imposes) advice to help the couple deal with their mutual loss. Of course, I do not presume to know how this book would affect other parents who lost a child but based on my own personal experience of such a loss, I can attest that it was very constructive positive counsel.
Author's Description of the Book.......2001-01-13
This is my author's view of the book: Many parents who have experienced the death of a child struggle with painful and at times almost overwhelming marital problems. Grieving can create great marital distance, and it can magnity couple problems that existed before the child died. Grieving parents often fear that they will divorce. Most books that have been written to help grieving parents focus on individual, personal grief. This book focusses on the couple relationship. Based on intensive interviews of 29 couples who experienced the death of a child, the book offers perspectives, insights, powerful and moving interview quotes, and advice dealing with common marital problems experienced by bereaved parents. Commonly the problems are connected to couple communication, differences in grieving and how those differences are interpreted, sexuality, parenting of other children, the use of alcohol and drugs, blaming, differences about whether to have another child, differences in whether to go outside the marriage for support, and what to do with things and spaces that were the child's. This book discusses hard realities but offers a message of hope. Grieving parents can and do overcome marital difficulties and achieve a strong and loving marriage based on resepect for differences, mutual understanding, and their shared history.
Customer Reviews:
Save your money, there are better bios out there........2006-03-29
This is about the most poorly written, boring rock bio I've ever read.
The first part of the book deals with the 1960 joint tour of the UK by Eddie Cochran and Gene Vincent. If you are interested in the arcane details of a tour 45 years ago you might enjoy this but the account is long on words and short on real information. This is obviously the material that was to be used as a stage show. It's too detailed and slowly paced to read well. There are numerous accounts, one for each performance but it gets repetitive.
If you survive the first section you will be rewarded with the only section of the book that reads like a biography; the prologues for both Cochran and Vincent. These were actually worth the time to read.
Once you've read the prologues you get to read the epilogues which are not as bad as the first section of the book but they don't read nearly as well as the prologues.
Eddie Cochran's epilogue is fairly short (not much happens after you die) and mostly deals with posthumous releases of his recordings.
Gene Vincent's epilogue reads like a slow-motion, millisecond by millisecond account of a train wreck. Mr. Vincent's life didn't seem to be very happy, and his last years seemed particularly unpleasant.
The author manages to work in an attack on Margaret Thatcher along the way and an account of the de-colonization of the African continent too. Interesting but what does it have to do with this bio?
At the end of it all I felt that I learned nearly nothing about their music. There was more talk about boozing, drugs and womanizing than about the musical ground that they broke. Frankly my opinion is this; someone put a lot of research into a play that never made it and they decided to write a book with the information. The problem is that it isn't a very good book.
The genesis for the 1960s British beat invasion.......2006-01-08
This book has an interesting history in that it is a direct result of research done for an original musical stage show of the 1960 UK tour by Gene and Eddie which sadly never made it to the London West End for a long run after a regional UK tour. The author has then added the prior history of Eddie up to the UK tour and the story of Gene before and after the tour and post the tragic death of Eddie at the tour end in a car crash on the way to London to catch a plane home to the USA.
The best and most interesting aspect is the story of the UK tour itself and the memories of many people who saw the tour and the impact it had on them including the musicians on the tour plus the recording of various national and local press comments (the often quoted story of George Harrison going to several shows in Liverpool and being converted to rock music as a result is missing but not a lot else).
The UK '60s pop scene and its ensuing global presence probably owes a lot more than the author credits to this event given this was probably the first true rock'n'roll concert tour the UK had ever had with highly regarded US rockers featured as the stars supported by other British rock acts of that time. All the prior ones especially Buddy Holly and Bill Haley had been lumped into family style variety shows by their promoters much like the early Elvis tours in the USA arranged by Tom Parker.
Also the exposure of many UK musicians to an accomplished US session player such as Eddie, who like Gene proved to also be a great live performer (plus they also made several appearances on the only weekly UK radio and TV rock shows the UK then had which added to their national impact), gave the UK its first taste of what might be, even if both performer's recording careers were then in decline in their homeland. One of the British guitarists backing Eddie on the tour (Jim Sullivan) went on to teach many 60s musicians including a young Jimmy Page and the recent Jeff Beck tribute CD to Gene Vincent reflected in part his seeing him live on tour as a teenager, Gene virtually moving to Europe to perform in the early 1960s.
The separate histories of each performer are in large part well known territory to their fans but there is enough in anecdotes and new facts to avoid any feeling of it just being regurgitated material. The tragedy of Gene Vincent's decline post Eddie's death is the best I have read and that includes the biographies on Gene alone that exist.
John Collis has nailed down very well a key event in UK rock history and one is left at the end feeling more than ever that the death of Eddie Cochran at the hands of an inexperienced car driver (like Buddy Holly before him in a plane crash, which apparently haunted Eddie if the book is true)was a great loss given the direction his musical skills were then moving in.

Simon Wiesenthal is known worldwide for his tenacious pursuit of Nazi war criminals, his resistance to historical revisionists, and his insistence that the world must remember the Holocaust. His has been a voice for those who did not survive. Hella Pick, a writer with The Guardian of London, tells Wiesenthal's personal story, which includes his experience as a prisoner at the Janowska concentration camp in Poland, an experience which inspired his mission to make the world remember. In Auschwitz in 1994 he explained, "My whole life's meaning is to ensure that the murderers of tomorrow--who may not even be born yet--must know that they will have no peace."
Book Description
Simon Wiesenthal survived thirteen concentration camps and has since spent more than fifty years searching for Nazi war criminals and bringing them to trial. This comprehensive and objective biography chronicles Wiesenthal's early life and survival in the camps, recounts in gripping detail each of his major Nazi hunts, and evenhandedly examines the conflicting reputations -- as both hero and egomaniacal liar -- of this controversial and enigmatic public figure.
