Flat, disappointing look at an American pioneer........1999-04-20
Jeannette Rankin lurks as an obscure footnote in the history of American politics. In school we're told she was the first woman elected to Congress and the only member of Congress to vote against U.S. entry into both World Wars. And that's all we're told about her. Kevin Giles, author of "Flight of the Dove" attempts to fill in the gaps by detailing Rankin's education, involvement in the suffrage movement and struggle for world peace. Unfortunately, Giles faces a significant and self-admitted stumbling block: Rankin wrote very little of her ideas and methods for attaining peace or her other ambitions. This shortage of material makes it harder to picture Rankin in the context of her times or to understand what drove to do what she did. Giles fails to make up for this lack of material by quoting contemporary newspaper accounts that wrote about her. He also fails to delve deeply into personal journals and memoirs of Rankin's colleagues and contemporaries. While using some of these sources, he mostly summarizes them, producing a defensive condescending biography. Jeannette Rankin wasn't perfect and some of her ideas may have been wrong, but she deserves a better biography than this. She was a woman who opened a lot of doors and stood by her principles while living in a fish bowl, observed by harsh skeptics just waiting for her to make a mistake. She deserves to be understood and brought back into the American pantheon.
Book Description
One of the world's most influential climbers, Kurt Diemberger is the only living person to have the distinction of two first ascents on the world's 8000-meter peaks, both climbed without supplemental oxygen. In each of these classic works, his infectious mixture of joy, awe, and a voracious appetite for life shine through his words. The inclusion of two fascinating autobiographical works-Summits & Secrets and Spirits of the Air-plus a powerful portrayal of K2 (The Endless Knot) make this omnibus a must for every climber's bookshelf.
Customer Reviews:
Larger Than Life.......2001-05-21
The author's awesome attainments in mountaineering: the only living man with two first ascents of 8,000-meter mountains, are matched by his boundless curiosity and his enthusiasm for every new experience. He is a man of high good humor, tenacity, and independence with remarkable communication skills.
The autobiography is three books "Summits and Secrets" written as a young man, "The Endless Knot" takes up his ascent and harrowing descent of K2 in 1986 and the loss of his beloved partner, Julie Tullis who died there; and "Spirits of the Air" written in middle age.
Though "Summits and Secrets" covers interesting material about Diemberger's childhood and early manhood, I found the translation to be stiff. I fault the translator because the other two books are so free flowing and at times lyrical. In these autobiographies, you get a sense of the complete man, not just his genius on the mountains. He loves to sing (he claims it helps him breathe better on the mountain), can and does swear thunderously in German when thwarted, has small vanities, and a never failing appreciation of the charms of the ladies. Unlike many of the climbing fraternity, he doesn't appear to have a double standard where women climbers are involved. He judges everyone on his or her merits. I became so attuned to his storytelling, I felt as if it was all directed to me personally, that he wanted me to be entertained and share his wonder and delight at all he had seen. I am glad to report that as of this date, Kurt is still going strong lecturing, climbing and doing camera work. The story ends at 1991, and I had to follow up to see how he has fared this last decade.
The much-traveled Mr. Diemberger for some reason had never been in the United States until his 40th year. (Maybe because we cannot boast of any 8,000 meter peaks!) He was an enthusiastic tourist as is shown in the following excerpt from "Spirits of the Air." His awe and amazement during his helicopter flight through Grand Canyon is infectious:
"I am staggered! Overwhelmed is no word for it! And anyway, there's no time to be overwhelmed when new sensations are continually bombarding you, shaking you, grabbing your attention, whetting your appetite for even more unexpected thrills. You are looking ahead, back, down, as gigantic buttresses sweep past, pillars and palaces of red rock, side valleys opening and closing, the terrific gorge agape below you--- You are flying through the biggest trough on earth. All the pictures I have ever seen of the Grand Canyon are forgotten. They are tiny facets, mosaic pieces, nothing more - I see that now. No human brain can comprehend this intricate labyrinth that is the Grand Canyon. It is a world!"
Let Kurt take you on his journey. You will never regret it.
An honest-to-goodness love story.......1999-08-30
Of this omnibus I have read only The Endless Knot but am so impressed with it that I wanted to lodge a review. This account of climbing K2 during one of its hungriest years is rendered luminous by the simple, unaffected, honest and straightforward affection between Kurt and his working partner Julie. Kurt's "married to the mountain" prose and his personal honesty make this a genuine monument in the literature.

THE must-have book for Heywood-Wakefield collectors.......1999-09-15
I have just started collecting Heywood-Wakefield furniture. I began after seeing a show on Home and Garden TV Network on the reissued Heywood-Wakefield line currently being manufactured. I ordered a catalog from them, visited their web site, then started looking for dealers here in Dallas. Long story short, I found a gentleman here in Dallas who buys and sells antique Heywood-Wakefield pieces. I looked at what he had to offer, and ended up spending a small fortune on several pieces for my bedroom and living room. He swore by this book. This is the Heywood-Wakefield collector's Bible. It has a comprehensive list of nigh every piece Heywood-Wakefield made from about the '20s on. It has pictures of all the pieces, comments on the piece's designer(s), history, and most importantly, an updated (1999) pricing list. Buy this, and you and your dealers will always "be on the same page," literally, when it comes to discussing pieces. This is especially helpful to those who are buying from dealers cross-country. A definite must-have!!!

This book is one I bought for our guild library because of the incredible variety contained in it. There are projects that are quick and fun or take longer and are just as fun! It has excellent step by step photos when necessary, well written directions and very tastful projects from designers that any quilter who is getting their feet wet will recognize the name of. The quilts are made from a variety of techniques, so if you have a preference or want to learn something new, this book is for you. ENJOY, it is a keeper!
Awesome!!.......2001-01-29
This book is the best quilting/patchwork/appique book I have ever seen! As soon as I bought it I just had to start a project from it, and now I'm starting another one. I've looked through it a million times already, it's very inspiring! Beautiful colour photos, and clear instructions. Also has alot of tips on how you can change the overall look with different fabrics etc.
Star crazy.......2000-08-14
I own a lot of quilting books and this is one of my best. Eye-catching patterns and originality abound. I love the stars the most. You just feel good looking through this book! I am going to make one of these quilts one day!!
glad I bought it.......1997-11-16
I rate Fast, Fun and Fabulous Quilts an 8 only because of the applique projects of which I'm not a big fan. The instructions are clear and takes the guesswork out of determing fabric yardage. Each project has tips to make the cutting and piecing more efficient. If you like stars, hearts, houses and teddy bears, get this book but it has lots more.

Book Description
Canadian architect Fred Hollingsworth designed his first house in 1946. Since then he has created some of the most innovative homes of the twentieth century. Hollingsworth's home designs incorporate an open floor plan and a keen observance of the flow between the inside and outside environment. Using natural materials with an emphasis on texture and natural lighting, Hollingsworth is one of the few modernist architects who look wholly to organic form as the basis of their design aesthetic. Living Spaces is a detailed monograph on Hollingsworth's rich career, revealing how he and a handful of visionary architects pioneered the acclaimed "West Coast Style" and helped establish modern ideals of structure and utility. Through dramatic full-page images, architectural plans, and lucid text from the artist himself, this book follows an acclaimed architect from his early days to his most recent achievements that show his continued commitment to innovation.

Customer Reviews:
Words of tribute for a great moral teacher of Mankind.......2007-02-11
Elie Wiesel wrote the book which more than any other perhaps, brought home to mankind the horror of the 'Shoah' His work 'Night' was one of the eternal classics of witnessing.
This commemorative volume opens with an interview by its editor Harry Cargas with Wiesel. Wiesel as always speaks in a fascinating and moving way. He talks about his being primarily a teacher and writer, and explains how he after surviving the 'Shoah' chose that path instead of one in business. He tells the story of how he after the War wandered in New York hungry most of the time even though he was employed by an Israeli newspaper as a reporter.
Wiesel speaks of how he has to be his own Rebbe, and how he spends much time thinking of those teachers and friends who were lost in the Shoah.
He is the person of remembrance, and he speaks of how with the years the memories have not grown less or diminished but rather intensified.
The volume also contains a number of moving writings by Wiesel including a concluding piece on his relation to Jerusalem.
Among those who provide essays in tribute are one of the great Jewish thinkers of the century, Emil Fackenheim, and the Christian theologian and friend of the Jewish people, Franklin Littell.
Wiesel truly deserves to be honored as the courageous witness of the Shoah, and its evil. He also deserves to be honored as a moral voice for Mankind who has repeatedly spoken out against Man's inhumanity to Man.
