    Book Description

Lionel Curtis C.H. once counted among the great and the good, working behind the scenes of international politics and honoured as the `pioneer of a great idea' - international federation as the natural successor to empire. He advocated federation as the way to create a new South Africa after the Boer War; he called for self-government in India in 1912; in 1921 he was instrumental in attempting to pacify the Irish Troubles by treating Eire as if it were a self-governing Commonwealth Dominion. He went on to preach the conversion of the Empire-Commonwealth into a multinational federation, which, in association with the United States, would serve as a model for a united Europe, and even for world government. He founded the Round Table think-tank, the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House, and the Oxford Society. He lobbied indefatigably for his vision of the Commonwealth as a new world order, to be more effective that the League of Nations in making wars obsolete. In the process, he exasperated nationalists and imperialists alike as a prophet of apparently lost causes. He deserves to be remembered not only for what he achieved but for what he was: the bore who never lost a friend; the optimist who stuck to his belief when all was lost, the third-class scholar who became a Fellow of All Souls; the visionary riding his hobby-horse into the drawing rooms of high political society and yet invited affectionately to return. The remarkable character of the man and the influence he exerted on the history of the Empire and Commonwealth are explored in this authoritative biography.

Just about the time that famous lion hunters like Ernest Hemingway and Denys Finch Hatton were meeting their ends, a young Portuguese boy and his family landed on the coast of Mozambique to establish a farm in the Portuguese colony. It wasn't long before Adelino Serras Pires cut his hunting teeth, on a hunt for a pride of man-eating lions who had been victimizing a local population made vulnerable by an epidemic of sleeping sickness. Soon,

The smell of the bush after the rains ... the feel of a campfire's warmth after an exhausting day spent following elephant spoor on foot, the sound of lion in concert on a kill, and the taste of guinea fowl over the coals had turned me into a cultural hybrid with a permanent longing for change, for wild places and challenges.

Pires would turn his passion into a promotion of the safari hunting industry in Mozambique, leading European aristocracy, heads of state, astronauts, wine barons, and other members of the international elite into the untouched bush in pursuit of "the big five." He would also become one of the most controversial figures in safari hunting. An outspoken man with an indomitable will, he fought the Frelimo guerrillas who engulfed the country while also roundly criticizing Portuguese rule, ultimately becoming the enemy of both. After Mozambique's independence, Pires jumped from Angola to Rhodesia to Zaire setting up hunting shop, only to be forced out as independence movements and superpowers battled. Just when permanency seemed possible in Tanzania, he found himself a hostage in a horrifying game of betrayal, torture, and international collusion.

Pires tells his life story with the intensity with which he lived his life and with the fury and bitterness of a man who has lost all he loved. Whether or not you agree with his assertion that trophy hunting is the best way to preserve African wildlife ("if it pays, it stays"), it's impossible not to be deeply affected by his portrait of an Africa torn apart by the inside and out, or to feel nostalgia for an Africa now destroyed. --Lesley Reed

      Book Description

When eight-year-old Adelino Serras Pires first arrived on a boat from Portugal in 1936, Mozambique seemed to be something out of a dream: It was a tropical paradise, where native tribes and Portuguese colonists lived in harmony, and the vast jungles, teeming with wildlife, held the promise of endless excitement. A few months into Adelino's new life, his father took him along on a successful hunt for man-eating lions that had been terrorizing the countryside. From that point on, Adelino's destiny was sealed: He would spend his days in the African bush, hunting for a living, and living for adventure. After a childhood wrought with thrilling episodes, Adelino became a primary safari organizer in Mozambique, with a client list comprised of African royalty, European dignitaries, and wealthy Americans alike. At the same time, the Uhuru movement took hold of Africa, fueled from the outside. Tribes across the continent began to rebel against European control. In Mozambique, the Frelimo party, bent on ousting the Portuguese colonists, launched guerilla attacks throughout the land. Such attacks resulted in the violent death and injuries of several safari clients, and soon Adelino was forced to pack up his operations. What follows is a frightening look at a continent under siege. As Adelino moved from one country to the next - Angola, Rhodesia, the Central African Republic, Kenya, Sudan, Zaire, and Tanzania -- each time resuming his life's ambition, while desperately struggling to remain uninvolved in each new conflict, he repeatedly witnessed the violence and horror of civil war. Like a hunter stalking its prey, it was only a matter of time before the forces of revolution brought him down, too. That day came when Adelino, his son, his nephew, and a fellow hunter were abducted in Tanzania, and turned over to the secret police in now-Frelimo-controlled Mozambique. In hair-raising detail, Adelino recounts months of torture and interrogation in a Mozambican prison that almost cost him his life, and the traitorous circumstances that landed him there. The Winds of Havoc is the story of Adelino's steady disillusionment, as the beauty of Africa slowly gave way to political turmoil and corruption. But more than that, it's a moving portrait of a life and time that is now gone forever. AUTHORBIO: Adelino Serras Pires was born in Portugal in 1928. He has organized hunting and photographic safaris in several African countries. He is now retired, and resides in South Africa.Fiona Claire Capstick was born in South Africa. 5 out of 5 stars A different view of the safari lifestyle.......2002-03-03

When I started reading The Winds of Havoc,I had the impression the book would be the memories of a gone by lifestyle, and quite frankly I was repulsed by how important the big game hunting business seemed like. Not until I reached the last quarter of the book did I realize the value of the author's memories in providiing a picture of a productive and peaceful "colonial" lifestyle and comparing it to the present state of Mozambique's existence. Clearly, African politics have changed for the worst over the last half of the 20th century. For all that was wrong about colonialism, the "indiginization" of most African countries has been a failure that will hurt Africa and the rest of the world for most of the 21st century. The fate of the African wildlife is an accurate indicator of the evolution of Mozambiquean politics. Mozambique will go as the wildlife goes.

      5 out of 5 stars Shocking Revelations.......2001-05-03

If there is a single book that informs and clarifies issues pertaining to Africa, from European colonization to the new millennium, this is the one. I am a seasoned collector of books on Africa. Nothing on my shelves, however, can compare with The Winds of Havoc. Adelino SERRAS PIRES and Fiona CAPSTICK have an intimate knowledge of Africa and I personally know many of the people mentioned in this book. I also had the honor of working with Adelino in Africa in the 1980s. This book confirms the courage and honesty he has retained throughout his turbulent life, qualities he never abandoned when many other people would have been tempted to give in to their tormentors. There are shocking revelations in this book as the reader is taken on a unique odyssey into many African countries, witnessing the fate of the wildlife as the winds of change became gales of violence which spared nothing and nobody. The book is an education. Adelino's extraordinary life and Fiona Capstick's ability with words make this book a compelling, disturbing experience. Buy it before the first printing sells out!

      5 out of 5 stars Lies exposed.......2001-03-16

I am black and I am angry. I live in Africa, The Winds of Havoc has been a revelation because finally, the lies that went with the turf of our liberation are beginning to be exposed. This book is a good start, I salute you Adelino Serras Pires

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, love and pain, lots and lots of truth.......2001-03-08

The Winds of Havoc is much more than an adventure or hunting novel. I want to congratulate the authors Fiona and Adelino on a very special, genuine and valuable contribution to the modern history of Mozambique, and also of post-colonial Africa generally. From my experience as a scholar of contemporary Mozambican affairs, as an active participant in the Mozambique peace process 1989-1995, and as Special Advisor to the then Special Representative of the Secretary General of the UN, Mr Aldo Ajello, I can recommend this book as essential reading. But most of all, it reads easily and really well. It takes you on a journey of adventure and passion and tragedy, and I found it impossible to put it down before I had come to the last page.

5 out of 5 stars The Winds of Havoc is a Grand Slam.......2001-03-03

Fiona and Adelina have hit a bases loaded home run! Adelino, I am so sorry that humanity can treat others so badly. Your days incarcerated, cold, hungry and with your hands and feet hurting so bad, brought tears to my eyes. What a horrible injustice.

If you do not know anything about East African history, particularly Mozambique, this book will show the "Havoc" that occured at this time in Africa between two factions.

This is a book makes you get a map out to see where these stories take place. You find that you want to read over at least once again.

From the author: Although Social Security's near-term outlook is benign, population aging in the United States will eventually increase program costs much faster than revenues. The trust funds will begin to decline and, under most plausible forecasts, will fall to zero well before the middle of the next century. The paper offers an overview of the budget outlook for Social Security. It contains a review of the factors that influence program finances and an assessment of how these factors affect the future outlook. It considers voters' willingness to deal with the problem and surveys the possible reforms that would eliminate the long-term deficit

                              Book Description

Progresing from simple implements of bone, stone, and wood to metals to the elaborately feathered flies of the Victorian era, antique fishing lures are now sought as highly prized collectibles. This edition has hundreds of new photographs and much new information not included in the first edition. Chapters include the 'big ten' companies, miscellaneous companies, metal lures, handmade lures, and finally the seldom seen experimental lures. Concerned primarily with the most colectible antique fishing lures made before 1940, this deluxe hardbound book contains well over 1,300 lures beautifully reproduced in full color. Research and identification will be simple yet effective with these descriptions, sizes, dates, 2001 values, and quck comparisons of similar features of lures... AUTHORBIO: Dudley Murphy decided to become a lifelong collector of fishing lures at the age of 13, when his grandfather presented him with a gift of old Heddon, Jamison, and Clark lures. As one of the three founders of the National Fishing Lure Collector's Club, Dudley is an active collector with a variety of interest, including fishing. AUTHORBIO: Rick Edmisten was introduced to fishing at age 12 by his father, and by the time he was 18 had developed a keen interest in collecting old lures and tackle. He has hosted a successful fishing tackle collectible show from 1990 to the present, and is recognized as an authority on old tackle. He often appraises estates and collections. REVIEW: This book focuses on the "big ten" companies, metal lures, handmade lures, and the seldom seen experimental lures, and emphasizes antique lures made before 1940. Each section begins with a short introduction about the company, followed by vivid, representative color photographs that the company made. Each photo lists the name of the lure, number, date manufactured, length, collector value, and any important notes or details about the lure.

It has in depth descriptions of the different types of lures and their parts and gives great incite on how to date such lures and parts. The print is is large and bold and the color pictures are stunningly printed on heavy bond glossy paper. There are pictures throughout the book of just about every lure imaginable. We are generally disappointed in sequels but this 2nd edition IS AN EXCEPTION. The hobby's rarest and unusual Lures are pictured in vivid color with a short history. Set this one on your coffee table and your guests are instantly "hooked". If you are a collector or simply enjoy angling history, this one is definitly a "MUST HAVE"...

The book was a good overview and basics on how to frame a picture. It covered how to matt and mount your pictures, methods and tools to use, etc. The one area that did not get covered much was building picture frames. Since this is a critical component of framing, it would seem to have merited a more in depth coverage. But, the book was written more for those wanting to save money by doing their own matting and mounting, not building picture frames.

4 out of 5 stars Nice looking book, many pictures - only for beginners!.......2007-05-19

At first I was going to give this book only 2 stars because it has so little information and is very very basic. But then I realized that it was never intended to be a comprehensive text, it was designed to provide very basic information in a very simple and accessable way to people who might be intimidated by framing their own art or photos, and it does this task well. So I decided to give the book 4 stars - but keep in mind that this book is only for beginners or non-technical people.

I purchased this book because I have to frame several pieces of art and I refuse to spend $300 to $400 per piece at my local frame shop. This book is good for someone seeking basic info on framing techniques and tools, and it is especially good for someone who is not that handy because it walks you through every step with instructions and a photo of each step.

If you are handy, or if you have some framing experience, or if you want to lean more than just basic techniques, then this is not the book for you - instead I suggest you purchace "Mat, Mount, and Frame It Yourself" by Logan, a more interesting, detailed, and useful book.

                              Book Description

Casting a question mark upon the proverbial image of home, Gary Chang's Suitcase House attempts to rethink the nature of intimacy, privacy, spontaneity, and flexibility. Chang's uncanny prototype proposes a 40-meter long empty rectangular space built on wood strata, flexibly divisible by a series of sliding and folding partitions. That in and of itself is hardly earth-shattering. But lift a pneumatic panel in the floor and up pops a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom, cabinets. It's pop-up book meets designer living, and all in 250 square meters of space. A playful game for homeowners, the Suitcase House was designed along with 11 other radical houses for the Artists Commune project near the Great Wall in Beijing.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting little book.......2005-04-20

First, the book caught my attention because the suitcase house is part of the avant-garde architecture project called "the Commune by the Great Wall" in Beijing, China. The developer of the project invited 12 young Asian architects form South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Mainland China, and HongKong, to independently design 11 houses and a clubhouse at the foot of the Great Wall, all nestled in a beautiful environment - valleys on one side and the Great Wall on the other. The suitcase house was designed by Gary Chang (a HK-based architect and the author of the book), and is located at the entrace of the Commune project.

Chan devoted the whole book to his design (suitcase concept and its variations) with overwhelming background information such as the inspiration and philosophy behind this house, the social, economic, and societal background of the project, the early sketches and concepts, detailed floor plans and specifications, original design of coordinating furniture, the building process with documentary-flavored pictures, interviews with the architect and the design team, email and other correspondences between the architect and the client, and a large amount of pictures focusing on details. Really appreciate this approach to get a 360-degree in-depth interpretation of a single modern house. Plus, this book has a great graphic design.

That being said, readers have to sacrifice the breadth with depth. Financially, it is not very wise to pay the money to only read about one single house. Also, some readers might not be interested in the excessive background information.

The Return Journey is a collection of 14 short stories of life, love, and learning that enables the most harried reader to enjoy a well-told tale in its entirety before checking on the kids or folding the clothes. In the tradition of Binchy's classic tales Circle of Friends and Tara Road, this consummate summer beach book introduces readers not to models of literary and romantic indefectibility, but to folks just like us, who have bad hair days, runs in their hose, and freckles both physical and metaphorical. The title story paints a portrait of the embattled relationship between a mother who left her home in Dunglass, Ireland, and her daughter, who has traveled to Ireland to find her history and finds love, as well. Through weekly correspondence, mother and daughter repair the damage to their relationship, laying to rest ghosts of an earlier mother-daughter relationship gone irrevocably wrong. And Binchy's "Victor and St. Valentine" renews faith that truly romantic men do exist and are often overlooked, their motives suspect in an increasingly self-reliant world. No one can accuse Binchy of overtelling a tale; she has perfected the art of leading her readers to the verge and then allowing them to loose their imaginations as they see fit. A wonderful and thoroughly engaging read. --Alison Trinkle

I enjoyed Binchy's "Tara Road"; but "The Return Journey" is a mostly faceless collection of short stories that fade from memory as quickly as they are read. I finished this book less than a week ago and cannot recall "The Apprentice" at all. "Holiday Weather" about a botched affair is like watching a firecracker whose fuse fizzles before it pops. "Victor & St. Valentine" & "Crosslines" are forgettable. I did like "Miss Vogel's Vacation" about an unassuming woman who finds a little romance after being alive for 50 years. "The Home Sitter" was well told, but was frustrating since Allie who comes to their home and has a sparkling personality and gypsy-like appeal almost steals Mara's husband and leaves Mara feeling even more inadequate than when the story began. There is no lesson learned. My favorite story here is "The Women in Hats." It has a progression with the narrator, Helen, meeting a trio (Charlotte, Bonnie & Charlie) on a cruise liner and assuming that the man was with the thinner woman rather than the heavy-set Bonnie. Binchy makes a comparison about how people's judgments about gay people parallel their prejudice about fat people. "Excitement" was not. Unfortunately, Binchy has not mastered the short story form in this collection. She simply doesn't have many stories to tell. This is like reading writing exercises more than short stories. Taxi!

Maeve Binchy's diversity of characters and unprecidented storytelling abilities make all her books a treasure. This collection is at the top of the list.

Give Binchy credit, she knows what the public wants, and apparently, it is a lucrative business. But after reading three of her books, the rest become fairly predictable. This collection of shorts is very much thus.

                                Book Description

Recent medical research has found St. John's Wort to be a safe treatment for depression, anxiety, and nervous disorders. This book describes that research and gives readers a thorough guide to the herb, including its history, chemistry, benefits, and easy instructions for its use. At a time when more people are turning to alternative medical systems, St. John's Wort could change the way we think about medicine. St. John's Wort is a nervine and is useful in a wide variety of stress-related conditions, but also benefits people suffering from burns, ulcers, shingles, toothache and bedwetting. The herb is booming in popularity and many people are thrilled with the results.

4 out of 5 stars Flower of Joy.......2004-08-15

The author initiates his discussion of Hypericum/St John's Wort with a detailed investigation of the key active ingredients of the plant, their various molecular structures and biochemical action.

Besides its efficacy against depression, Hypericum is also used for mental problems like anxiety, panic, nervous exhaustion, insomnia and addictions. On the physical side, it shows promise against viral infections and is a proven wound and tissue healer and has been used as such in homeopathy.

The author also discusses its role in the treatment of HIV and the use of Hypericum in combination with other herbal medicines. A very interesting part is Chevallier's consideration of St John's Wort in history, folk medicine and in Western herbal medicine. It is interesting that the folklore surrounding garlic and St John's Wort, as protectors against evil, has been borne out by modern science.

Detailed dosage and information on preparations are provided and the book concludes with bibliographic references. There are black and white illustrations of the plant and of the molecular structure of its active ingredients. A great source for information on a wide variety of natural supplements that enhance the mind, memory and mood is Dr Ray Sahelian's book Mind Boosters. I also recommend Earl Mindell's Herb Bible for more information on St John's Wort and other natural anti-depressants and healing herbs.

A good and inspiring read. History and biography readers have long been hooked on great first-person adventure stories - autobiographies. At their best, they are authored by personalities who can tell the difference between their statures and their shadows and are undiminished by well-meaning ghostwriters. Raffi's autobiography, The Life of A Children's Troubadour is just such a good read. Breaking with the well-represented male-as-conqueror model, Raffi's compelling story opens with "the departure of my parents from this world within twelve hours of each other, on October 26, 1995." This life-altering event draws us into his tale, built on Armenian Diaspora roots and immigrant childhood through his first career as folk entertainer for children and their families, all leading to his life-inspiring vision and passion for "child honoring." It's been a welcomed gift to my nieces and circle of friends. I can't wait for a sequel to this mid-life tale - how he teams his world view, his music and his environmentally attuned baby beluga graduates with statesmen and religious leaders, like the Dalai Lama.

If your children are fans of Raffi and you must hear his voice everyday, it's nice to know a little background. An amazing life story and very entertaining reading. Who knew?!?

I learned a lot about Raffi's early life and family from this book -- also about the children's music industry. Raffi was and is a pioneer in his field. A fast-moving read and must-have for any children's performer.

5 out of 5 stars Raffi shares his heartfelt beliefs.......2001-02-15

The Life Of A Children's Troubadour is Raffi's autobiography in which he shares the story of his life, from his childhood in Cairo Egypt, to his adjustment to life in Toronto as a youth, to his professional success as a musician throughout North America. Raffi reveals the details of his remarkable career, from modest beginnings as a folksinger in coffee houses to sold-out children's concerts at Carnegie Hall and on Broadway. Raffi shares his heartfelt beliefs, his love and admiration for children, and his dedication to making the world a better place for kids. The Life Of A Children's Troubadour is a "must" for anyone who has enjoyed and appreciated Raffi's very special music and his influence on a generation of children, parents and teachers.

4 out of 5 stars Even Our Heroes Are Human.......2000-04-11

I reall enjoyed discovering who Raffi is. It was nice to see that he is not perfect and to see himself work that.

I would have liked to read more about his life and less about how to raise a child. Towards the end of the book, it got a little "preachy" on how to raise a child. I find it a little difficult to get advice from someone who does not have a child.

I do, however, find it inspiring that someone did so well in a path that he didn't choose for himself. He learned to do the best he could and let himself be guided.

This charming memoir mixes zesty details particular to the author's roots in the close-knit Jewish community of the Bronx (after-school snacks of rye bread piled high with sauerkraut, confusion when an older person didn't speak English with an accent) and those familiar to any American who was a kid during the depression and World War II (weekly trips to the movies, lunches at the Horn & Hardart Automat, polio scares, defense bonds as gifts, fathers who smoked unfiltered cigarettes, mothers who "never sat down except to eat or sew"). Childhood's universal joys and sorrows, from pen pals to summer camp, are also recalled with affectionate warmth in many of the book's 207 numbered paragraphs. The unusual structure captures the nonchronological, in-and-out nature of memory, and Rosenkrantz's distinctive, funny, and sassy voice gives it narrative continuity. Lively visuals include numerous family photos (the author bravely lets us see her in the silly outfits once deemed suitable for formal portraits of little girls) and evocative period documents like a 1939 World's Fair souvenir ("taken by the Photomatic"). It's all great fun, and a welcome change from the diaries of dysfunction that have recently dominated this genre. --Wendy Smith

                                  Book Description

Before I was born, my mother had decided to name me either Laurel or Lydia, names that appealed to her artistic temperament. But then somehow--she was convinced by my father's sisters to make me a lackluster Ruth, in honor of their recently deceased mother, Rose. And so my birth certificate reads Ruth Leila, a name I was never called, by my mother, either of my father's sisters, or anyone else.

So begins the life list of Linda Rosenkrantz, 207 random recollections of her first 12 years that together comprise one of the year's most unexpected and delightfully offbeat memoirs.

Rich with the sights, sounds, and smells of her sheltered childhood in a Jewish enclave of the Bronx. My Life as a List re-creates the urban experience of American Jews in the years surrounding World War II. She writes with wry affection of family and friends, of grievances harbored and accomplishments savored, all recalled with the laser particularly of a child's eye. Period photographs and ephemera from the author's own collection bring her colorful cast of characters even more vividly to life.

Juxtaposing the poignant with the hilarious, the insightful with the quotidian, My Life as a List is a delightful patchwork quilt of memories that is sure to resonate with readers.

This is a clever idea for a charming little book. Linda Rosenkrantz gives us a memoir in the form of a list. It goes from birth until puberty. Of course, it's a glossy memoir with no unhappiness allowed to intrude but so what? This is fun.

5 out of 5 stars I loved the style and content of the book........1999-05-31

Even though my upbringing was different from the author's, Linda Rosenkrantz's My Life as a List had deep resonance for me. The surface textures and emotional truths brought back and awakened, so many memories of early childhood. The idea of doing the book in list form is liberating and truly original, and as Joe Torre says on the back cover - It's really funny as well.

Linda Finch has written a lively, endearing, and rejuvenating biography that will take you back to your own roots, Bronxite or not. Her non-chronological life list is both warm and peppery. Vibrant little memory flashes weave an indelible sense of her World War 11 childhood in the Bronx and resonate with our own. My Life As A List is wonderfully laid out with an amazing number of family photographs which somehow, inexplicably, reflect the wry poignancy that pervades this fascinating and unique little book.
