From Empire to International Commonwealth: A Biography of Lionel Curtis
Deborah Lavin Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198126166 |
Book Description
Lionel Curtis C.H. once counted among the great and the good, working behind the scenes of international politics and honoured as the `pioneer of a great idea' - international federation as the natural successor to empire. He advocated federation as the way to create a new South Africa after the Boer War; he called for self-government in India in 1912; in 1921 he was instrumental in attempting to pacify the Irish Troubles by treating Eire as if it were a self-governing Commonwealth Dominion. He went on to preach the conversion of the Empire-Commonwealth into a multinational federation, which, in association with the United States, would serve as a model for a united Europe, and even for world government. He founded the Round Table think-tank, the Royal Institute of International Affairs at Chatham House, and the Oxford Society. He lobbied indefatigably for his vision of the Commonwealth as a new world order, to be more effective that the League of Nations in making wars obsolete. In the process, he exasperated nationalists and imperialists alike as a prophet of apparently lost causes. He deserves to be remembered not only for what he achieved but for what he was: the bore who never lost a friend; the optimist who stuck to his belief when all was lost, the third-class scholar who became a Fellow of All Souls; the visionary riding his hobby-horse into the drawing rooms of high political society and yet invited affectionately to return. The remarkable character of the man and the influence he exerted on the history of the Empire and Commonwealth are explored in this authoritative biography.

Just about the time that famous lion hunters like Ernest Hemingway and Denys Finch Hatton were meeting their ends, a young Portuguese boy and his family landed on the coast of Mozambique to establish a farm in the Portuguese colony. It wasn't long before Adelino Serras Pires cut his hunting teeth, on a hunt for a pride of man-eating lions who had been victimizing a local population made vulnerable by an epidemic of sleeping sickness. Soon,
The smell of the bush after the rains ... the feel of a campfire's warmth after an exhausting day spent following elephant spoor on foot, the sound of lion in concert on a kill, and the taste of guinea fowl over the coals had turned me into a cultural hybrid with a permanent longing for change, for wild places and challenges.
Pires would turn his passion into a promotion of the safari hunting industry in Mozambique, leading European aristocracy, heads of state, astronauts, wine barons, and other members of the international elite into the untouched bush in pursuit of "the big five." He would also become one of the most controversial figures in safari hunting. An outspoken man with an indomitable will, he fought the Frelimo guerrillas who engulfed the country while also roundly criticizing Portuguese rule, ultimately becoming the enemy of both. After Mozambique's independence, Pires jumped from Angola to Rhodesia to Zaire setting up hunting shop, only to be forced out as independence movements and superpowers battled. Just when permanency seemed possible in Tanzania, he found himself a hostage in a horrifying game of betrayal, torture, and international collusion.
Pires tells his life story with the intensity with which he lived his life and with the fury and bitterness of a man who has lost all he loved. Whether or not you agree with his assertion that trophy hunting is the best way to preserve African wildlife ("if it pays, it stays"), it's impossible not to be deeply affected by his portrait of an Africa torn apart by the inside and out, or to feel nostalgia for an Africa now destroyed. --Lesley Reed
Book Description
When eight-year-old Adelino Serras Pires first arrived on a boat from Portugal in 1936, Mozambique seemed to be something out of a dream: It was a tropical paradise, where native tribes and Portuguese colonists lived in harmony, and the vast jungles, teeming with wildlife, held the promise of endless excitement. A few months into Adelino's new life, his father took him along on a successful hunt for man-eating lions that had been terrorizing the countryside. From that point on, Adelino's destiny was sealed: He would spend his days in the African bush, hunting for a living, and living for adventure. After a childhood wrought with thrilling episodes, Adelino became a primary safari organizer in Mozambique, with a client list comprised of African royalty, European dignitaries, and wealthy Americans alike. At the same time, the Uhuru movement took hold of Africa, fueled from the outside. Tribes across the continent began to rebel against European control. In Mozambique, the Frelimo party, bent on ousting the Portuguese colonists, launched guerilla attacks throughout the land. Such attacks resulted in the violent death and injuries of several safari clients, and soon Adelino was forced to pack up his operations. What follows is a frightening look at a continent under siege. As Adelino moved from one country to the next - Angola, Rhodesia, the Central African Republic, Kenya, Sudan, Zaire, and Tanzania -- each time resuming his life's ambition, while desperately struggling to remain uninvolved in each new conflict, he repeatedly witnessed the violence and horror of civil war. Like a hunter stalking its prey, it was only a matter of time before the forces of revolution brought him down, too. That day came when Adelino, his son, his nephew, and a fellow hunter were abducted in Tanzania, and turned over to the secret police in now-Frelimo-controlled Mozambique. In hair-raising detail, Adelino recounts months of torture and interrogation in a Mozambican prison that almost cost him his life, and the traitorous circumstances that landed him there. The Winds of Havoc is the story of Adelino's steady disillusionment, as the beauty of Africa slowly gave way to political turmoil and corruption. But more than that, it's a moving portrait of a life and time that is now gone forever. AUTHORBIO: Adelino Serras Pires was born in Portugal in 1928. He has organized hunting and photographic safaris in several African countries. He is now retired, and resides in South Africa.Fiona Claire Capstick was born in South Africa. After attending several European Universities, she returned to her birthplace and eventually served as an officer in the armed forces of South Africa, seconded to the military intelligence division as a multilingual translator and interpreter. Her late husband, Peter Hathaway Capstick, was the author of highly acclaimed safari accounts such as Death in the Long Grass and Safari: The Last Adventure.Download Description

This is a book makes you get a map out to see where these stories take place. You find that you want to read over at least once again.

Gary Chang: Suitcase House
Craig Au Yeung , Liane Lefaivre , and Gary Chang Manufacturer: Map Book Publishers/MCCM Editions ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9628681699 Release Date: 2004-08-02 |
Book Description
Casting a question mark upon the proverbial image of home, Gary Chang's Suitcase House attempts to rethink the nature of intimacy, privacy, spontaneity, and flexibility. Chang's uncanny prototype proposes a 40-meter long empty rectangular space built on wood strata, flexibly divisible by a series of sliding and folding partitions. That in and of itself is hardly earth-shattering. But lift a pneumatic panel in the floor and up pops a bathroom, a kitchen, a bedroom, cabinets. It's pop-up book meets designer living, and all in 250 square meters of space. A playful game for homeowners, the Suitcase House was designed along with 11 other radical houses for the Artists Commune project near the Great Wall in Beijing.Customer Reviews:

The Return Journey is a collection of 14 short stories of life, love, and learning that enables the most harried reader to enjoy a well-told tale in its entirety before checking on the kids or folding the clothes. In the tradition of Binchy's classic tales Circle of Friends and Tara Road, this consummate summer beach book introduces readers not to models of literary and romantic indefectibility, but to folks just like us, who have bad hair days, runs in their hose, and freckles both physical and metaphorical. The title story paints a portrait of the embattled relationship between a mother who left her home in Dunglass, Ireland, and her daughter, who has traveled to Ireland to find her history and finds love, as well. Through weekly correspondence, mother and daughter repair the damage to their relationship, laying to rest ghosts of an earlier mother-daughter relationship gone irrevocably wrong. And Binchy's "Victor and St. Valentine" renews faith that truly romantic men do exist and are often overlooked, their motives suspect in an increasingly self-reliant world. No one can accuse Binchy of overtelling a tale; she has perfected the art of leading her readers to the verge and then allowing them to loose their imaginations as they see fit. A wonderful and thoroughly engaging read. --Alison TrinkleBook Description

I would have liked to read more about his life and less about how to raise a child. Towards the end of the book, it got a little "preachy" on how to raise a child. I find it a little difficult to get advice from someone who does not have a child.
I do, however, find it inspiring that someone did so well in a path that he didn't choose for himself. He learned to do the best he could and let himself be guided.

My Life as a List: 207 Things About My (Bronx) Childhood
Linda Rosenkrantz Manufacturer: Clarkson Potter ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0609603671 Release Date: 1999-03-02 |
Amazon.com
This charming memoir mixes zesty details particular to the author's roots in the close-knit Jewish community of the Bronx (after-school snacks of rye bread piled high with sauerkraut, confusion when an older person didn't speak English with an accent) and those familiar to any American who was a kid during the depression and World War II (weekly trips to the movies, lunches at the Horn & Hardart Automat, polio scares, defense bonds as gifts, fathers who smoked unfiltered cigarettes, mothers who "never sat down except to eat or sew"). Childhood's universal joys and sorrows, from pen pals to summer camp, are also recalled with affectionate warmth in many of the book's 207 numbered paragraphs. The unusual structure captures the nonchronological, in-and-out nature of memory, and Rosenkrantz's distinctive, funny, and sassy voice gives it narrative continuity. Lively visuals include numerous family photos (the author bravely lets us see her in the silly outfits once deemed suitable for formal portraits of little girls) and evocative period documents like a 1939 World's Fair souvenir ("taken by the Photomatic"). It's all great fun, and a welcome change from the diaries of dysfunction that have recently dominated this genre. --Wendy SmithBook Description

But then somehow--she was convinced by my father's sisters to make me a lackluster Ruth, in honor of their recently deceased mother, Rose.
