Tells of an interesting life.......2000-09-27
Whils this book concentrates on Senator Hitchcock's role as de facto Democratic leader in the fight for the Versailles treaty, it does cover the whole life of its subject, who was the founder of the Omaha World-Herald, and a life-long Democrat--something today's readers of the World-Herald may be surprised by. Hitchcock won two terms in the U.S. Senate, and served from 1911 to 1923. Anyone who is interested in Senatorial biography, as I have always been, will enjoy this work. It gets only 4 stars because the editing is poor, with quite a few typos.
Book Description
When Admiral Richard E. Byrd set out on his second Antarctic expedition in 1934, he was already an international hero for having piloted the first flights over the North and South Poles. His plan for this latest adventure was to spend six months alone near the bottom of the world, gathering weather data and indulging his desire “to taste peace and quiet long enough to know how good they really are.” But early on things went terribly wrong. Isolated in the pervasive polar night with no hope of release until spring, Byrd began suffering inexplicable symptoms of mental and physical illness. By the time he discovered that carbon monoxide from a defective stovepipe was poisoning him, Byrd was already engaged in a monumental struggle to save his life and preserve his sanity.
When Alone was first published in 1938, it became an enormous bestseller. This edition keeps alive Byrd’s unforgettable narrative for new generations of readers.

Fun for night time reading.......2007-08-16
I read this book in High School and I loved it then! Just a really great book.
Co-co-cold, Harrowing and Lonely in the Extreme.......2007-05-04
This is the first-hand account by Rear Admr. Richard E. Byrd of his solitary months in the winter of 1934 at the U.S. Advance Base in Antartica, written in 1938. Keep that in mind when reading it. It seems pedantic at first, even ho-hum but soon escalates into a page turner. Much of the book is taken directly from his diary and details not only his objectives but his failings. No electro-techno-gadgets here in 1934! He reveals candidly the humility visited on him by nature at her most severe and his incredible and near fatal decline due largely to his need to preserve his reputation and ego. It is a fantastic account - even viewed from 2007. The small original artwork by Harrison in the earliest editions are charmingly 1930's. Arm yourself with a toasty blanket and a few pictures of the aurora austalis from the internet and go it Alone with Byrd! As for the big negative review below - well dear reviewer, just how long have you spent alone in the Antartic?
Cold!!.......2006-02-22
What some people will do for adventure. The author describes a place no one in his right mind would want to endure. The descriptions of survival alone in the cold for many months are interesting. It was good , not great.
Related to Chaim Potok's book "The Chosen".......2006-02-09
I learned about Alone when I read The Promise, the sequel to Chaim Potok's The Chosen. I approached Alone with that psychological twist in mind. Rather than reading it as an adventure story, I read Alone as a companion to the DSM-IV. Byrd had help making this book a good read, true; but his story is absolutely riveting. I have read the criticisms of Byrd's ineptitude, his failure of boy scout basics. I can imagine how anyone's mind would go to pieces just knowing the impossibility of rescue, the remoteness of the situation. I would not criticize this man for making the weird mistakes he made. The book is a fantastic journey not to the ends of the earth, but the depths of the human psyche.
Cold is Relative.......2006-01-21
"Cold does queer things. At 50° below zero a flashlight dies out in your hand. At -55° kerosene will freeze. At -60° rubber turns brittle." These are some of Byrd's observations from his surreal solo expedition to the heart of Antarctica's night.
The expedition took place from March - August of 1934. Byrd, a former Navy officer, rugged explorer, decides to push the envelope doing something no man had ever tried before. He was to monitor the weather while living in a shack buried in snow, by himself, for the entire night-time period that covered almost 6 months.
Although the literary value regarding this book could be argued, it is nevertheless a great story based on a unique social experiment. Byrd's trail of thoughts veers from rational, to ridiculous. His mood is altered by the extreme struggles that he has to endure to serve science. However, one can pick up the vibe that he wanted to do this for himself as much as for science. He was thrilled at first, but underestimated what he was really in for.
Byrd gets crushed while he is only halfway through. The cold and physical problems put him down. He struggles between life and death for what seems to be an eternity. And it all takes place in the absolute darkness of the polar night. Byrd goes on and on about how much he learns to appreciate the simple things of modern life, while he has lost possession of them. He makes incoherent philosophical theoriest, and struggles with faith.
Finally Byrd finds the strength to go on. I wouldn't be giving up the end of the book in here by the fact that he wrote it four years after the completion of this expedition. This book would be a perfect read in the middle of the winter. The colder the better! Get a warm cup of chocolate and relive the polar experience. You will find a new appreciation for that thermostat knob while reading it.

Connecticut Valley Furniture by Eliphalet Chapin And His Contemporaries, 1750-1800:
ASIN: 0912724633 |
Book Description
Iron at Winterthur, a catalogue of the extensive but unpublished collection at the museum, will fill an oft-neglected niche in the field of decorative arts--that of the history and use of iron in the everyday life of seventeenth-, eighteenth-, and nineteenth-century America. With essays and entries on approximately 300 cast, wrought, and sheet iron objects for every conceivable household function, the author not only addresses the specifics of maker, date, place of origin, and the like but also presents thematic and interpretive commentary dealing with economics, craft and manufacturing techniques, and the marketplace. And not to be denied is the issue of aesthetics. Mr. Fennimore adeptly weaves the story of skill and artistry, illuminating the grace and beauty inherent in everyday iron objects.
Equally instructive is the book's introduction, which documents the formation of the collection by museum founder Henry Francis du Pont, one of the twentieth-century's most notable collectors of Americana.

This one is a real winner!.......2007-04-05
Ms. Craig wrote this book about 10 years ago when faced with making a quilt from blocks that weren't all an accurate and equal size. It really works. If you've ever won your quilting group's block-of-the-month and dispaired of some way to get them together because of disparate sizes........this is the book for you. Even better, it's sooooo simple too!
Wish I'd found this book years ago!.......2007-02-01
This was a great purchase! I am thrilled to finally be able to complete some unfinished quilt projects which otherwise would have remained UFO's forever! I recently acquired 16 'friendship' blocks through my quilt guild with each block varying in size, making them difficult to put together into a quilt top. With the help of the methods in this book I very easily completed a lovely quilt - each of those blocks fitting in perfectly with little effort! Easy for beginners as well as 'seasoned' quilters like me. HIGHLY recommend this book for any quilter's library!

Love this book. Fun, easy ways to set odd quilt blocks. Give it a try.

Book Description
The domestic unit is inseparable from its homestead, and the "house," at once a physical place and a social unit, is often also a unit of production and consumption, a cult group, and even a political faction. Inspired by Lévi-Strauss' suggestion that the multi-functional noble houses of Medieval Europe were simply the best-known examples of a widespread social institution, the contributors to this collection analyze "house" systems in Southeast Asia and South America, exploring the interrelationships among buildings, people, and ideas. They reveal some of the ways in which houses can stand for social groups and serve as images of process and order.

I'm a Christian, and I've read Ezzo's books.......2005-12-05
..Or as much as I can stomach of each of them. To Christian mamas out there, please research the author and the lack of support (renouncement) out there from the Christian community (esp the author's former church and Focus On The Famliy). Ezzo's advice is NOT the only Biblical way to birth/raise a child (in fact, I don't find it biblical at all in my research in the Word). He knows nothing about attachment parenting (for info on that from a Christian perspective that is not renounced by the Christian community, read books by Dr. Sears). I also would recommend that you visit ezzo.info before buying this book.
Thanks for the advice!.......2005-01-23
Hi, as an expectant first time mother trying to get ready and get informed for the care of my little one, I am very glad I looked at your reviews and the Ezzo website! This book was recommended to me by a friend and I was all set to buy and follow it so I really thank you for the alert.

Read the books before you make judgments.......2004-11-18
I just wanted to state that Ezzo DOES NOT say to not feed your child. People posting against the Ezzos should make sure they READ the books before criticizing them.
Ezzo really needs to get with it or get out........2004-03-22
Everything I'd like to say has already been said by all of the one and two star reviews on this page.
Suffice it to say, Ezzo needs to get out of where he doesn't belong.
Mistitled: Should be Pregnancy, Birth and Infancy "Wise".......2004-01-25
I picked up this book because I saw the subtitle "Birth by Design" and am always enthralled to see books that actually accentuate women taking a primary or at least partnership role with the caregiver in bringing their child through the birth process.
Unfortunately, the book covered very little about the birth process itself.
In fact, that is the primary short coming of this book: everything is very minimal, clinically written and dry.
I was very disappointed to say the least.

Book Description
A bilingual edition of a renowned work of Puerto Rican literature, Cortijo’s Wake/El entierro de Cortijo is novelist Edgardo RodrÃguez Juliá’s vivid description of the funeral of legendary Puerto Rican musician Rafael Cortijo. El entierro de Cortijo became an immediate bestseller following its original publication in Puerto Rico in 1983. An unparalleled Afro-Puerto Rican percussionist and bandleader, Cortijo (1928–1982) revolutionized the country’s musical culture. His band, Cortijo y Su Combo, captivated Caribbean and Latin American audiences as it emerged in the mid-1950s. Immensely popular across Puerto Rican social classes, the band both âmodernizedâ the traditional vernacular forms of bomba and plena and forcefully reestablished their African and working-class roots. The group’s innovations have been integral to salsa since the 1960s.
Winding through the streets of working-class San Juan with Cortijo’s funeral procession, RodrÃguez Juliá’s autobiographical chronicle provides a rare portrait of the impoverished society from which Cortijo’s music emerged. Along with detailed renderings of grief-stricken mournersâincluding Cortijo’s childhood friend and fellow musician, the celebrated singer Ismael ("Maelo") RiveraâRodrÃguez Juliá records his feelings as he, a light-skinned, middle-class writer, confronts the world of poor black Puerto Ricans. The author’s masterful shifting of linguistic registers, his acute sensitivity to Puerto Rican social codes, his broad knowledge of popular music, and his sardonic ruminations on death and immortality make this one of the most widely read books of modern Puerto Rican literature. Well-known critic and cultural historian Juan Flores has provided a scrupulous translation of RodrÃguez Juliá’s text and an introduction situating the book in relation to Puerto Rican music and culture and the careers of Cortijo and RodrÃguez Juliá.

Cortijo, the musician and friend.......2004-03-06
A wonderful memory of a dear friend and one of the kindest human beings I've had the pleasure to know.
I left Puerto Rico in 1980 and still, in my heart, think of it as home.
