Good reading............2006-05-18
I enjoy the book very much. Bounty hunting is a tuff business. They work with mean people and bad people throughtout their career. It is hard to maintain a positive outlook in life day after day in their profession. But I guess it takes a true professional to achieve that and Mr. Armstrong has convinced me.
Love IT!.......2004-02-03
Ever since i picked up this book i havn't been able to put it down it even gave me a better sense of understanding of life.
Most Successful Bounty Hunter in the US.......2003-11-24
Ok folks, I'm gonna try and deal with several reviews of this books as I give my opinion. Why? Because stupidity cannot be corrected, but ignorance can.
This book is -not- meant as a "How To" for being a Bail Enforcement Agent, hereafter referred to as a bounty hunter. If you want a step-by-step on how to be a bounty hunter, find another book, because this one is not it.
I, personally, did not see the book as a forum for Mr Armstrong to "push or peddle" his religious perspective. I suppose some could view it as that, but then they, in my opinion, need to come to grips with their own religious dogma.
Now, let's talk about the book and leave the pedantry aside.
The reading level is of a somewhat lower angle than many might be used to, I would compare it to that of a magazine that attempts to appeal to both teens and adults. It is an easy read and you will not be digging through a dictionary, which, I believe, is the entire point. Mr Armstrong makes no bones about his background and is attempting, perhaps, to have a book out there that many urban youths can read. And if you want to go around with me that the reading skills of kids today has deteriorated, take a number.
The stories are the best part of the book. Very true. But you also should not ignore the deeper parts. I do not like any religious angle, yet I got through this book. So forget about those condemnations. Mr Armstrong has created a religious amalgamation, largely influenced by Ancient Egyptian ideals. There are concepts of Shinto and Buddhist thoughts as well.
The basic idea is there for bounty hunters as well. And while I am not a bounty hunter by trade, I have done what I refer to as skip tracing in the past, using a computer. The big pattern is observation and psychology, both of which pop up again and again in the book.
My biggest disagreement with the book and, I would suppose, Mr Armstrong is that I do not see eye-to-eye with him about the inherent goodness of the human being. As well, I do tend to meet force, or the possibility of force, with overwhelming force.
Final say, from me, is that the book is good and has a multi-cultural appeal. He does not proselytize, nor does he come across as overbearing in any other manner. I think he'd be someone good to have a "sit down" with and talk about things over a picnic table...well, ok, I'd have a beer, but I'd supply him with an orange juice.
Very enjoyable to read.......2002-07-27
The best part about this book is the stories. Armstrong grows up in New Jersey, and eventually ends up on the west coast, where he is first really exposed to the criminal element. While working on a fishing boat in Alaska, he gets his first experience bounty hunting while trying to earn some extra money. He is not impressed with the guy he was working with, but was intrigued by the profession.
Armstrong goes on to found the Seekers, a group of bounty hunters who are professional, and respectable. His religion plays a part in the book, and is primarily seen in his attitude torwards the criminals he is trying to capture. He does not accept the fact that all of them are automatically evil, and frequently talks about how he is trying to let his mind grow, and that this is what the people he works with need to do as well. The religion is not an overwhelming part of the book, but if you are the sort of person who cannot read about a religious view that conflicts with yours without getting agitated, this is not the book for you.
The best part of the book is the stories about caputres he's made. As a bounty hunter, it is his job to track down people who were arrested, made bail, then did not return for their trial. A typical bounty hunter gets 5,000-25,000 a capture. Most of the chapters in the book describe memorable captures this bounty hunter has made either individually, or with the help of his organization. He would aquire information on his target, then track that person down and capture them in the most efficient and non-violent way possible. It is very interesting to hear about the situations he's been in, and how he survived them, and made the capture. It's a pretty easy book to read, and very engrossing.
Interesting subject thoroughly ruined.......2002-07-22
This book was supposed to be a sure thing when I picked it up. First off, a subject that I am greatly interested in. Second, co-authored by Anthony Bruno, a greatly accomplished fiction writer.
To cut to the chase: I returned this book to the bookstore in absolute disgust!
A perfectly interesting subject is thoroughly ruined by simple-minded amateur sociology, poor writing, laughable excursions into armchair philosophy of personal evolution and true manhood, and the selling of occultism as legitimate spiritual practice.
Even though the author tirelessly parades what he must falsely diagnose to be his superior and evolved intellect, the book never rises to any level of intellectual or philosophical discourse worthy of serious consideration. Even with the help of the co-author, this book reads as though written by a high schooler.
Worst of all is the author's obvious conceitedness and the tireless promotion of "ancient Egyptian wisdom." When testing that so-called wisdom against reliable historical sources, the ancient Egyptians emerge as a cruel slaveholder nation given to practices of idolatry and occultism.
It is ironic that an African-American author (a self-described Black Phoenix--I kid you not!) of such intellectual pretensions could miss such an obvious point! What's more, what exactly did this ancient wisdom really do for ancient Egypt? It led to a country whose claim to fame are the plagues brought on by it stubborn defiance of the one true God, which led to their ultimate demise as a nation. Is this the kind of wisdom we need to hear about?
This book touches on a great number of important subjects. Unfortunately, not a single one of them is treated credibly and worthy of any serious consideration. What a thorough waste!

Book Description
The political consensus in the United States today is that the nation avoid deficit spending. But as virtuous and unassailable as that goal sounds, it has fallacies and dangers. In a lucid, nontechnical writing style, Benavie shows that deficits can be either good or bad and explains how to tell the difference. Deficits, or government borrowing, can be beneficial or harmful depending on what the government does with the money. Preventing such borrowing, Benavie points out, would be comparable to preventing one's family from borrowing money to buy a house or to put a child through college. Deficits can be beneficial to the nation's economic health in three main ways. When the economy slumps, a deficit, which is automatically created, helps to reduce the severity of the recession. When the economy is seriously depressed, boosting the deficit may be the only cure. Finally, deficits to support such investments as basic research, cleaning up toxic waste, and rebuilding inner cities are crucial to the economic health of future generations.

You Can Find Gold With a Metal Detector.......2006-08-19
Prospecting information is presented that is useful and informative
Missed the Mark.......2006-07-15
The authors have so much enthusiasm for their topic that I truly wanted to write a positive review, but unfortunately their enthusiasm is the only redeeming quality of the book. True, you can learn some things about searching for gold with a metal detector. And although the authors disclaim any purpose to sell their products, they refer to them exclusively on the grounds that they are most familiar with them. Well, OK, but it still has an uncomfortable feel to it. And I felt I was unable to translate many of their instructions to generic terms (for use with any brand metal detector).
Early on you are advised that terms are defined in the glossary. But they should also be defined in the text so that one does not have to continually stop reading and refer to the glossary. This is basic to didactic writing. For example, the term "placer" is used many times before it is defined. Ground balancing (canceling) is treated the same way.
There are several passages that are repeated verbatim in different chapters and you are left wondering if you have somehow read the current chapter already! It appears that the editor of the book was in a great rush, or extremely inexperienced. I could not find any reference to RAM publications on the web. The editor was found, and seems to be mostly associated with the works of Garret and Lagal.
Was it worth the price? I suppose, as I at least felt the excitement of hunting for gold. But it would be better titled as a companion to one of the Garret manufactured metal detectors. I still hope to find a book on using the metal detector as a hobby that is a better-written "how to" book that speaks in generic terms about metal detectors.
If the old timers had these machines there wouldn't be any.......2003-09-17
The improvements in technology have corresponded inversely to the number of prospectors. Erosion during the past century has exposed millions of tons of virgin substrata for prospectors of today, and metal detectors will increase the chance of discovering new placers.
There's no better expert on metal detector technology than Garrett. Great as those detectors are, they require some training to use them. Garrett provides the best 'how-to' advice available. His book will give you the straight-forward means to practice with it before you begin trekking into the canyons or sweeping old school yards for coins.
Learn how to do it and you still mightn't find gold, but you'll certainly find the greatest treasure of them all: solitude.
Hope Springs Eternal.......2003-02-24
Our family has been in something of a cash crunch since the late 1970's, so the jaunty optimism in this book's title caught my eye the moment I spied it on a local shelf. It was written by the doyen of metal detection - Charles Garrett, creator of the eponymous Garrett Infinium LS detector, as well as the "ultra-advanced, deepseeking GTI 2500," among many others. His book is a sober introduction to the art of wealth accretion by way of magnetic broom. All is covered, from the first "bench test" before a detector's maiden search, to techniques for keeping the search coil level, to the famous "screw-driver probe" for pinpointing buried objects. Shortly after I bought this book my four-year-old son and I passed a pleasant afternoon on a Chatham beach seeking to re-enter the ranks of the upwardly mobile. By nightfall our plunder included an oversized wing nut (almost certainly from a pirate's ship, I assured my son), three discarded soda cans (good for fifteen cents, or twice that should we make the journey to Michigan, where one can gain double the local redemption rate through ruthless arbitrage), and three pennies that my son regularly planted in front of me to allay his boredom and my flagging spirits. All told I expect that we would have found more precious metals by combing the beach with a Geiger counter, and certainly would have had more success at spooking the locals (as it was, my cover story of being a minesweeper on secret business for Tom Ridge had few takers).

Book Description
Over 100 tatting designs from long out-of-print thread company leaflets, ranging from tiny coasters to a checkerboard luncheon set, plus elegant collars, tracery patterns for doilies and luncheon mats, and beautiful edgings for pillow cases, guest towels, table mats. With full instructions and a photograph of each completed design. 84 halftones.
Customer Reviews:
A delight!.......2005-07-01
This lovely book is a reprint of patterns from several books from the 1930s and 40s. There is a wide range of items including a huge selection of edgings, some lovely doilies, collars and baby wear and some exquisite table linen.
The patterns are written in the old fashioned longhand style of their time. The reproductions are of reasonable quality considering the book was published in the late 1980s. There are no diagrams though most of the photos are quite clear.
Most of the pieces are fairly simple though some are quite large, and most people will find it fairly easy to work them once the instructions have been deciphered. I recommend this book.
The Tatter's Treasure Chest.......2000-01-07
This book consists of reprints of patterns from thread company pamphlets of the 1930's, 40's and 50's. The reprints are well done and clear, and the original instructions have not been altered (In addition to the many patterns, readers will enjoy a nostalgic visit to an era when luncheon cloths, chair sets, and even roller shade pulls were supposed to exhibit a housewife's skill and elicit the envy of her neighbors).
This book would be a good choice for a novice tatter who is looking for more patterns. Not only are the instructions written out in longhand, but there are hundreds of patterns to choose from (some tatters find longhad instructions difficult to follow because you can lose your place; they have a point! I use a Post-it Note as a marker, which helps).
Tatting patterns from mid-century were marketed with a focus on novelty and "modern" styling. They also tended to be simpler than older patterns. Was this a reflection on tatters' decreasing skill level, or an acknowledgement that modern women had less time to devote to handwork?
I give this book five stars a) for the number and variety of the patterns and b) for the quality of the black and white reprints, which are very clear.
Lots of tatting bang for your buck.......2000-01-04
This collection features dozens of patterns from the 1930s and 40s; more than 100 patterns for less than six dollars! For designs created during a time when tatting is thought of as being mostly doilies and edgings, this collection is pretty creative. Some of the most unique designs are the baby bonnet, earrings and boutennieres. I love looking at the models for some of the designs, everything is so vintage. My only problem with this book is that the patterns are written in longhand, making it easy to lose your place while tatting.
Lots of tatting bang for your buck.......2000-01-04
This is a huge collection of patterns from the 1930s and 1940s---more than 100 patterns for less than six dollars. For designs that were created during a time when tatting is often thought to have been limited to edgings and doilies, there are some pretty creative ideas. The tatted earrings, baby bonnets and handkerchiefs are all especially beautiful. There are a ton of edgings to dress up clothes and linens or turn into bookmarks. I love looking at the photographs of the models wearing the collars, they have such a vintage look. The only thing I don't like so much is the way the patterns are written out only in long form, which can make it easy to lose your place.

Title can be deceiving.......1999-08-17
To be 100% honest, as of this writing I have not finished this book, but I was put off by the fact that this book is actually based on "The Boys Town" methods. I am sure some advice will be helpful, but I think they need to state that somewhere. I know I was shocked when I opened my package! Also so far they are always referring to Boys Town and not how to use this practically in our classrooms.

A Garth Bio At Last.......2006-08-30
Maybe it's because I live in California, but for years I've been looking for a Garth Brooks book, biography, autobiography, anything and never had any luck at all. It seemed they just didn't exist and when I found this I bought it as fast as my mouse could click 'buy now with one click'. And when it arrived, I happily read it in two sittings and am thrilled to know the life and career of one of my biggest idols better.
There are a few reviews I read that took shots at the writting itself and I'm not going to tell you that this book doesn't read like a long high school paper, written in a 'speaking voice' but I also wasn't sitting down to read 'Grapes of Wrath' when I picked it up.
This book is a lot like the narrative to a Garth Brooks special you would see on the Biography channel, a program to which any one who would enjoy this book would surley tune in to watch.
I gave this four stars not for the litterary fireworks but for the joy of finally reading a Garth Brooks book.
Only officially endorsed autobiography of Garth Brooks.......2005-05-16
This is most compelling of all the Garth books. It's the only book that Garth Brooks is quoted as "having read every word and it brought tears to my eyes." The story about Garth Brooks, Hall of Fame member Robert Metzgar, Booking agent Joe Harris, Sr. and car dealer Bob Farr saving a local Christian family from starvation at Christmas time is one of the most touching, wonderful Christmas stories ever told.
Garth's personal commitment to charitable giving and his love of children leap from every page. It makes you fall in love with him as a superstar all over again. This book is a "must" major motion picture. The Chistmas scene alone is worth every penny you pay for this incredible charismatic autobiographical account of the world's greatest country act. If you want intense drama that brings tears to your eyes at times, this is the best of all the Garth books.
Garth Brooks Story.......2001-10-12
Have you ever wanted to know more about Garth Brooks, the country legend? If you have, then this is the book for you.The author shows that Garth loves people and loves performing for them. She includes interesting facts and finds justice to many rumors. As a person interested in music, I was pleased this biography told of how Garth started out as a music artist and of the trials and tribulations he had to go through. The author also included stories of ordinary people who have met Garth, and have witnessed what a great and caring person he is. She also wrote about the real life struggles of Garth and his wife, like each having to work two jobs to make ends meet.
Although I enjoyed the book, I thought the author could have included more feeling and drama into it. She also could have included less statistics about his albums.
After reading this, I have more understanding and admiration of Garth Brooks than I have ever had before.
good book.......2001-02-19
i thought that this book was a great book. i've liked garth since i was in 2nd grade and now i'm a senior and i still like him just as much. some people thought this book was a bad book and said bad things about it but i disagree with them. i learned a lot of things from this book that i didn't know about him, so if you are wondering if you should buy this book i would say yes. i bought it the day it came out and i've read it many times since then.
Very Highly Recommended.......2000-05-24
Okay, I'll admit, I am a rabid Garth Brooks fan. So, you should know I had an eye on this book and was ready for any kind of bias either way on this story about one of country music's most revolutionary members.
Ms. Sgammato is a woman with connections into the industry, and her research is extensive and thorough. She pulls no punches, and puts the good in with the not so perfect to give a well-rounded picture of the man and the performer. This book goes a long way to dispel or confirm various myths about Garth Brooks. It gives a rare insight into the man who dared not only to follow a dream, but also to fight to maintain control of that dream in the face of fickle critics and those who might be jealous of his success.
She speaks of the hardships GB faced as an ordinary Midwestern guy trying to find himself, and his, as well as his wife's, struggle to build a career in a tough to get into industry. Then it outlines their struggle to handle the fame notoriety that came with phenomenal success.
Along with GB's story, there are various referrals to those in the history of the country music industry, as well as examples of the generosity of others, that inspire not only Garth Brooks, but many others as well.
Overall, this is a great story about a good man, who started out just like anyone else and worked to make his dreams come true. Inspiring.
