      Book Description

This is the first study of the reform oratory of the "silver-tongued" temperance leader, Frances Willard. It provides a critical analysis of the speaking style of this influential late nineteenth century suffragette, prohibitionist, and leader of women. This work also provides texts of representative speeches, a chronology of important speeches, and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources. The critical analysis points first to Frances Willard's belief in evolutionary Christianity and the equal treatment of women as the basis for her oratory. The study then examines how women's broadening concerns for reform were justified as a response to women's needs to protect their homes. Her campaigns for the Woman's Christian Temperance Union and "the woman question" and her speeches calling for changes on behalf of labor and to overcome poverty also figure prominently in the analysis. The eloquent speaking style which conveyed her passionate interest in these issues is then exemplified by the texts of six speeches made between 1874 and 1897. As part of Greenwood's Great American Orators Series, this study is intended for students and professionals in rhetoric and communications, women's studies, and history focusing on American reform movements.

        Book Description

In 1893 Frances Willard was at the height of her power and influence as leader of the women's social reform movement. It was also a time when bicycles were wildly popular. And so, when her doctor recommended she exercise out-of-doors, Willard was determined to learn to ride. It was not easy for a woman in her fifty-third year, hampered by long skirts, but she was eager for the challenge. She hoped her example would help other women seek "a wider world." She saw cycling as a way for women to gain independence, develop confidence, and be seen by men as equals in skill. A best-seller when originally published a century ago, Willard's fascinating account of her adventure continues to enchant and inspire readers today. An introduction by Edith Mayo, curator of political history at the Smithsonian Institution, describes the life and work of Frances Willard and her role as an early leader of the women's movement. The book concludes with an illustrated essay on the history of women and cycling.

An engaging account of Victorian life and women is presented through the eyes of Frances E. Willard, woman extraordinaire. Willard, widely known in the United States and abroad for her social reform efforts, discovered the bicycle at the age of fifty-three. Although she was not in good health, she was still determined to dare and take chances and, most importantly, urged other women to do so. Willard believed that the experience of mastering a bicycle would give a woman the experience of mastering her own personal destiny. Thus, we are treated to an amusing account of how Willard mastered "Gladys", her bicycle. Some charming pictures of Willard and her bicycle are included.

However, the most interesting and entertaining aspect of the book is found near the end in a section by Lisa Larrabee entitled, "Women and Cycling: The Early Years". Some new and unusual facts accompanied by sketches and pictures make the article not only enchanting but an important contribution to the history of cycling. Did you know that all sorts of maladies were thought to occur if a woman cycled? A woman could develop "bicycle eye" caused by prolonged raising of the eyes while the head was lowered in a riding position. Or even worse, a woman could ruin the "feminine organs of matrimonial necessity"! Also fascinating were some of the many accessories especially for women. One was called "Cherry's Screen". It was a device that blocked the view of a lady's ankles and feet, and also prevented her skirt from blowing about. It rather looked like batwings. Larrabee combines humor and historical fact to allow a glimpse of Victorian life for the female and to explain how the bicycle led to the eventual emancipation of women.

Anyone who enjoys cycling would find this book a great conversation piece and a welcome addition to his or her library.

              Book Description

Frances Willard (1839-98), national president of the WCTU, headed the first mass organization of American women, and through the work of this group, women were able to move into public life by 1900. Willard inspired this process by her skillful leadership, her broad social vision, and her traditional womanly virtues. Although a political maverick, she won the support of the white middle class because she did not appear to challenge society's accepted ideals.

                          Book Description

Drawing on network theory from the organizational sociology literature, this book examines issues related to which organizational factors determine how employees influence the budgeting process. Data were collected from managers who participate in the budgeting process at a major apparel manufacturer. Social network analysis was employed to measure how the structure of the network of managers affects the budgeting process. The results show that budgetary influence is structurally determined and resides with managers holding central positions in the organizational network. Thus, while formal procedures determine which employees are involved in budgeting activities, only centrally positioned managers actually influence budgetary outcomes.

The findings indicate that influence, not involvement, is the key to empowerment in the budgeting process. This research suggests that researchers and practitioners should be aware of an organization's social structure when examining a participative budgeting process. The difference between formal designs and actual influence is indicative of a "rhetoric-reality gap" which can impair the effectiveness of management control systems.

Despite what the Brady bunch might say, silencers serve some very civilized functions and contribute to a saner, quieter way of life, which is why a lot of folks like them. After reading The Hayduke Silencer Book, many readers shared their own ideas for simple designs you can build at home, legally. Here is the cream of the crop.

This book just passes as average or an OK guide.
If you are after exact dimensions & quality drawings dont buy this book. The author will have you trying to fit a 1/4 inch dowel into a .22cal bore to align washers, wipes etc.(page 61)
The bulk of the designs in this book are for small bore cans that wont last more than a full clip from a .22cal pistol.
The book is written with a 50:50 signal to noise ratio , it does have some good ideas, constrction material & general info on how to build your own disposable or quality reusable suppressors ,unfortunately you have to wade through a lot of carp to get it.
If you listened at school or have any sort of technical or practicle experience with firearms & basic engineering practices you could probably do better with another book on cans.
Basic design & construction of cans is freely available on the net , in text's .pdf's or at the US patent office , the latter is a place even the author suggests you check out for information.

It's hard to find a good resource book these days. If you want to learn how to make silencers for hunting and just for fun, read this book. It has instructions on how to make from the simplest to the most complex silencer. I give it 5 stars, and it well deserves it.

From the Northwest Territories of Canada as far southeast as Virginia in the United States, tree bark became indispensable to the everyday life of Native peoples. Simple to cut, light to carry, easy to work with, it was used for food, containers, clothing, and canoes. But nothing showed their skill, ingenuity, and inventiveness as the way bark was used to make shelters.

                                Book Description

Full of stunning color photographs, this book is a visual guide to how Ben built his outstandingly beautiful home in the woods. It is also a practical manual and the story of a man realizing his lifelong dream to build one of the most sustainable and beautiful homes in Britain. Ben's amazing chestnut timber framed house was hewn from his own woodland. He infilled the frame with local straw bales and plastered them with his own clay and locally sourced lime. the roof was made from chestnut shingles and the weatherboard is local hand-milled oak. He even made his own window frames out of hand planed ash. He built the whole structure for under 28,000 British pounds with the help of volunteers, with no crane, no waste, no skip and not a unit of electricity off the national grid. His electricity comes from the sun and wind, his heat from wood and solar hot water panels and his water from a spring and the sky. His greywater is purified by a reedbed system and his compost loo feeds the fruit trees in his orchard. The Woodland House gives details of the evolving design process, identifying materials, costs, project management, and the actual building. It proves that low cost, low impact, and high aesthetics can go hand in hand, and that it is possible to build green and to build affordably. In the United States, Ben will appear on the Home & Garden Network's The World's Most Extreme Homes, a series with more than seventeen million viewers per episode, in the spring of 2006.

It is a really good story. In this book you're searching for clues. Once you start into the book it gets more interesting.

This story tells about five people who solve a mystery. This group of people is called the Woodlanders. The mystery is finding out why Mr. and Mrs. Bell hid their son for thirty years in the Old Bell House. The most interesting part was when the Woodlanders found the trap door to the third floor where the son lived.

I would recommend this story for anyone who likes mystery stories. This book is probably the best story I have ever read.

For years I've been fascinated with the early 1960's folk revival and have read much of the material written about that scene. Folksinger Bill Staines was blessed to have been a part of that scene, first as an enthusiastic Boston area teenager, spending his evenings in the audience at the legendary Club 47 in Cambridge and later honing his own unique songwriting and performing skills. It is with this in mind I purchased "The Tour". Bill's many first-hand recollections of these magical times alone are a good reason to read this book.

Years ago I stumbled across the novel "Blue Highways: A Journey Into America" by William Least Heat-Moon. What a marvelous read. One simple man's take on a myriad of plain folk who he meets on a journey across America leads him to not only discover some truths about what makes people tick, but gives him insight into his own heart. Only when I read "The Tour:..." did I get that same sense of a man finding his own way in life through his observance and interaction with others.

Certainly the most comprehensive and entertaining novel I've found on the subject of the 1960's folk scene is "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" by Eric Von Schmidt and Jim Rooney. My not so tongue-in-cheek title for this review may now make a bit more sense!

The tour of which Bill Staines writes juxtaposes a thirty year practically continual tour against his approximately thirty day fall tour of I think 2003. I laughed at stories of home-made hot tubs in remote Alaska and cried as Bill related his belief in the rainbows that seem to appear at just the right times in his life.

5 out of 5 stars Music to my eyes.......2006-02-11

I've followed Bill's career over 20 years, and apppreciate what it took to take a life of music and the road, and put it together in this book by the very talented Bill Staines. The book reads like a song, and is a beautiful memoir of the rough life of a solo songster. Hear his music once, and you'll have his songs in your heart forever.

                                                5 out of 5 stars Folk Singer's Experiences.......2005-05-25

Here's the info from Bill Staines' website about the book:
For more than 35 years, Bill Staines has traveled the highways and byways of North America, playing his music in colleges, coffeehouses, concert halls and folk song societies. He is one of America's quintessential troubadours, logging almost 70,000 miles a year on the open road. The Tour is not only a collection of characters, consequences and experiences, it is - perhaps more importantly - an offering up of some of the wisdom gained from "a life between the lines."

The Tour is a book that will take you on two journeys, one past and one present. Each fall, Bill Staines leaves his home in New England and sets out on a five week tour of North America, playing his music for fans and friends, and covering almost 15,000 miles of open highway. On the twentieth anniversary of the tour, he began writing this narrative.

Read these pages and you will journey with Bill and get to know some of the people and places that make his story worth telling.

The Tour is also a chronicle of a life, from the time that Bill spent growing up in the Boston-Cambridge folk music scene in the early 1960's to the present, when he has come to be considered one of the most respected singer-songwriters on the folk music scene today. It is all here, and it is all written from the heart.

                                                  Book Description

the fist expose in English about the Romanian and Transnistrian tragedy and the post-war cover-up. Over 500000 Jews were killed in the Romanian Holocaust and their story has been one of obscurity in the history of World War II. This book fills a major historical gap in holocaust studies. the historical section of this book is based on research done by Jean Ancel and Dora Litani pioneers in the history of the Romanian Holocaust. Includes survivors' personal testimonies which demonstrate the annihilation suffering and unspeakably traumatic experiences in Romania and Transnistria but also allows us to witness their courage faith and hope for the future. This book contains new revelations from recently released Soviet documents and eyewitness testimonies

I'm sorry, but this book just was not what I expected it to be. Though Harry Dunai did experience the Holocaust as a Jew, his deafness barely entered into it, except to maybe save his life. His typical experience of being sent away to residential schooling in Budapest probably saved his life, since his parents and brothers were collected and sent to the gas chambers.

Dunai's life was not easy by any measure, but he had many protectors and many people who cared for him and did so much for him in the way of providing homes and jobs. I don't know if it is the translating of Dunai's own words through his daughter and ghostwriter, but Dunai comes across as a very self-centered human being, who often does not show either the gratefulness for his blessings and for those who do things for him, nor does he express much concern for others.

Since I've read so many histories and biographies about those who did care on all sides, this one was very disappointing. The section on the war is short...mainly about how hungry he was. A lot of people starved to death...a lot of other people never had the people caring for them nor the opportunities for escaping a horrific existence that Dunai had.

If you are looking for a good book on the Medical Holocaust as it affected the Deaf, read 'Crying Hands' about the Deaf in Germany who were targeted before and during WWII. This book is okay as a demonstration of deaf life during the war and afterwards in Europe, I guess. (...)

James L. Crenshaw's Education in Ancient Israel, a book about how knowledge was transmitted from generation to generation in biblical times, may also shed light on some of the more contentious issues in education today. Crenshaw reads biblical books such as Proverbs, Job, and Ecclesiastes, as well as Sumerian and Egyptian texts to find clues about how students learned to read and memorize their lessons in biblical times. He also describes the frightening forms of corporal punishment that sometimes took place when students failed. Crenshaw's central thesis is that in biblical times, "education originated with the desire for order and community." To realize that desire, educators embarked on ambitious programs of "moral formation, the building of character," which was always strengthened by instruction in religious devotion. Crenshaw's project is historical, so his book stays neutral in contemporary education wars. Still, it's interesting to imagine him head-to-head with someone like William Bennett, considering the question of why so many people of faith today have ideas about education that closely resemble the standards of biblical times. --Michael Joseph Gross

                                                    Book Description

In this groundbreaking new book, distinguished biblical scholar James L. Crenshaw investigates both the pragmatic hows and the philosophical whys of education in ancient Israel and its surroundings. Asking questions as basic as "Who were the teachers and students and from what segment of Israelite society did they come?" and "How did instructors interest young people in the things they had to say?" Crenshaw explores the institutions and practices of education in ancient Israel. The results are often surprising and more complicated than one would expect.

Education, for the people who lived in the biblical world, was more than a simple matter of memorizing information and taking tests. It was a search for the hidden plan and presence of God. Knowledge was gained, according to biblical texts such as Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, not only by means of patient observation and listening, but through communication with Wisdom, the feminine incarnation of the Divine. Drawing upon a broad range of ancient sources, Crenshaw examines this religious dimension of education in ancient Israel, demonstrating how the practice of teaching and learning was transformed into the supreme act of worship.

"Few are as well qualified as Lang . . . to consider Heidegger's Nazism. Taking Heidegger at his word that the key to a text or thinker is the unsaid, Lang considers Heidegger's near-silence on the Holocaust. Happily, he eschews apologetics, polemics, and hysterics for brutally honest, philosophical thoughtfulness. . . . This disturbing, thought-provoking work is well worth reading for those specialists and general scholars interested in trying to understand the appalling fact that the greatest philosopher of our century was also a run-of-the-mill anti-Semite."--Library Journal

In this diverse collection of stories, A.B. Yehoshua provides a variety of settings, characters and situations, from the commonplace to the bizarre. A common thread in each story is a mounting sense of dread, even if outwardly nothing of tremendous importance is occurring: a father intercepts his daughter's boyfriend's letters, a lecturer visits a missile base in the Sinai and is ignored, a commander refuses to command his troops in the field. In Yehoshua's fictional world, even small actions are mired in paralysis. In a nation surrounded by enemies, and in a society fractured by major issues of religion and ethnic origin, even small gestures become fraught with urgency.

5 out of 5 stars The title story is a masterwork .......2004-10-13

AB Yehoshua is arguably Israel's greatest living writer of fiction. The title story of this work," The Continuous Silence of the Poet" is a tremendously moving one, a small masterpiece. It tells of an aging poet's relation to his retarded son, and is done in a restrained and beautiful way. Yehoshua is a first- rate storyteller and creator of character- though he sometimes special pleads for his particular political take of the world.
Nonetheless when he is at his best he is one of the best now writing today.

I got my "hands" on this author by chance, as it was totally unknown to me. It was a lucky chance and I cannot help but recommending it to someone else. Melancholic, surrealistic
protestation of a sensitive man against a life that he find heavy and meaningless, Yeoshua's works will charm your soul
A beautiful demonstration that Isreael is not only the evil, ugly face of Sharon.

A wonderful collection for both seasoned Yehoshua fans and first-timers! Not only will the stories and their characters stay with you, but also the beautiful and strangely sad evocations of time and place - kibbutzim of yesteryear, Jerusalem in the rain ... Yehoshua also offers valuable insights into the Israeli heart and soul, using an elegant simplicity devoid of stereotyping. These stories are profound and delicate, occasionally shocking and, for the most part, unforgettable.

This is a dark and extremely moving book. Most of the short stories in this book operate on two levels, the micro-level of the characters within the story -- and on the macro-level as a commentary on the Jewish people. This is an extraodinary work by a wonderful writer. Buy it -- it's money well spent

This book, is a classic testament to the brutal persecution of Jews in the Soviet Union during the dark days of Communist opression.
With both poetic and potent eloquency Wiesel describes the atmosphere of fear and silence, that reigned among Soviet Jewry during the 1960's when this book was written. The attempts to force Jews to abandon their faith and identity, and to cut ties with their brothers and sisters in Israel, by the malignant and brutal Communist tyrants. then there was the daily disparagement of the State of Israel and the maligning of Zionism by the State Media (something we see in may countries around the world today).
Indeed even though Communist tyranny in Russia has collapsed, the crusade of hate by the Left, formulated by Soviet propagandists has only got more vicious and irascible, in recent years.
In South Africa, for example, a hard-core Stalinist Cabinet Minister, (of Jewish descent) trained and educated in the old Soviet Union, daily comes up with venomous and ruthless attacks on the Jewish State and it's supporters, and is directing a campaign of ethnic hatred against Israel and it's Jews.
But the Jews of the Soviet Union refused to forget who they were, or to give up their faith or their love for the State of Israel.
Reffering to the violent anti-Israel propaganda formulated in the Soviet Union, the author explains : "The purpose of such propaganda is to make Israel seem hateful to the general populace but to the Jews as well, to undermine the esteem in which they hold the Jewish state, and to convince them finally to relinquish an idea which has failed, a vision of redemption which has somehow been made profane..."
But this form of psychological warfare, directed against the Jewish dream, and designed to divide Jews of the diaspora from their own people in Israel, failed in Russia.
Jews all over the world need to reject it, wherever it raises it's ugly head.
As Wiesel describes 'there are Jews who will under no circumstances let themselves be severed from their people'.

5 out of 5 stars A book that helped change history .......2004-11-01

This report by Elie Weisel on the Jews of Silence helped increase greatly Western interest in the Russian Jewish community. It helped rally the Jewish world in support of the emigration movement. And eventually it helped in the liberation of the Soviet Jews from their prison. Over one million were to come to Israel in the decades ahead.
It is rare that a book has so much influence. A courageous witness like Elie Weisel deserves great credit for this historical ' miracle'.
