3 out of 5 stars Donw-home ramblin'.......2000-06-12

One of the most successful horse trainers in history, and the only trainer to win the Belmont Stakes five times in a row, tells his own story. Its language is about what you'd expect from a horse trainer in his upper seventies (at the time the book was written-- Stephens is now deceased). It's laconic, plain, understated. Easy reading. Probably interesting, if you follow horse racing, and especially if you remember Woody's streak of Belont wins in the early to mid eighties. If not, it probably won't hold your interest.

    Book Description

This gripping and at times astonishing story will be inspirational to all adults either facing Asperger’s syndrome personally or interacting with someone who has been diagnosed.

In his own imitable style, Chris Mitchell describes his life before and after diagnosis with Asperger’s syndrome. We follow Chris through primary and secondary school, where his lack of social interaction and anger continually landed him in trouble, and where he was bullied for being different. Only his excellent memory and specialist interests enable him to continue, and pass his GCSEs and a GNVQ in Media Studies.

At university, studying Journalism, he was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome. Suddenly his life made more sense, and his self-awareness meant his self-confidence returned, resulting in world travel, a Masters qualification and finally, acceptance.

Chris Mitchell was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome in 1998 when he was 20 years old. He has since achieved an MA (Hons) in Information and Library Management. Based in Sunderland, he is an advocate for Asperger’s syndrome and speaks at many public events about the condition.

      Book Description

Social Stories were originally developed to help children on the autistic spectrum understand the social confusion that they faced in coming to terms with their worlds. Since then, practitioners have developed the ideas for a much wider audience.

John provides over 80 stories he has used with great success as a teacher in Kirklees for all sorts of children, including those with language delays, communication difficulties, difficult behaviour, antisocial behaviour as well as those with autism.

Examples are provided, but the intention is that the adult and child work together to write a personal story that the child owns. The stories are practical and achievable, the language is down to earth and believable, and the subjects include those that we are often embarrassed to deal with.

If you want to develop the use of story to assist young people who are experiencing difficulties then this book provide you with content and structure to support the project.

        Book Description

This is a resource that will capture and excite the imagination of young people. A beautifully told story explores, through a mythical animal, the environmental issues of endangered species. The tale includes adventure and time travel. Each of the six lessons provides teacher notes, class activities, discussion points, games and worksheets.

The stories could be incorporated into:

        " Literacy hour

        " PSHCE

        " Citizenship

        " Geography

        " History

        " Environmental studies

National curriculum connections are provided for Key Stage 2 and 3 including:

        " Living things

        " Chronological understanding

" Ideas and evidence in science

" Thinking about the lives of people in other places and times, and people with different values and customs.

Another inspirational idea put into practice by the author team who were highly commended in the NASEN/TES book competition for their previous work on Anger Management.

            Book Description

This is not a documentary history or a strictly scholarly autobiography but a verbal trip down Jack Crandall's memory lane. It is a chronological narrative of my experiences as I perceive them now. It inevitably contains embellishments which stem from the fact that it is an egocentric enterprise and, at times, an urge to be "literary" if not always literal. I have not written fiction. The characterization of persons living or dead applies to real persons and is not coincidental.

As the writing progressed I began to realize that this exercise held intrinsic benefits and values for the writer whether or not anyoneelse - children, grandchildren, et. al. ever perused these typewritten pages. Such a realization squares with the claims of certain gerontologists who contend that a Life Review has a therapeutic value. I tend to shrink from the notion of equating this activity with therapy since I feel compelled to deny a felt need for therapeutic treatment. Nevertheless I must admit from traveling down memory lane a positive effect on my self-perception, an effect that can best be described as a paradoxical combination of a greater sense of humility and pride, augmented by a sharpened sense of gratitude for the many blessings I have received from family and friends.

If it seems to accentuate the positive it's because there are so many positive things to accentuate. As my writing progressed I began to think that an appropriately accurate subtitle should be "A Series of Fortuitous Developments." Last summer, while conversing with Jill's nephew, Chris Carlson, I told him that this exercise was making me realize how blessed I have been. He startled me by saying, "Would you say that you've lived a charmed life?" (his tone indicated that he thought so). I cannot avoid an affirmative answer to that question.

As the narrative unfolded and the recounting of events moved along I found much that was satisfying and pleasant to recall, little to regret. I realize that that statement smacks of smugness, but I hasten to add that I do not regard myself as the author of the fulfillments, the happiness and successes that have marked my life. With a different set of families and friends it could have been quite otherwise.

I close this protracted preface by registering the hope that some of my descendants will get some fraction of the pleasure in reading about my life that I have enjoyed in living it - and writing about it.

4 out of 5 stars A great look at rally history.......2001-06-27

A very detailed look at Stuart's life. Lots of insight about how rally teams were run in the good old days. If you're a rally fan, you'll enjoy his life story.

                4 out of 5 stars At last!.......2000-12-30

It was a pleasure to reminisce about the glorious days when Ford Motor Sport ruled world rallying. I was heavily involved in club rallying during the 70's and mid 80's, and to get an insight into the workings of the Company at that time proved enjoyable and filled in the gaps of what 'Joe public' knew of FoMoCo. It was also a pleasure to read about the early days of rallying, and compare with the current trends and how vastly different World championship rallies are nowadays. A great read from start to finish.

                5 out of 5 stars Always lucky.......2000-02-01

A very humourous look at Stuart Turners life! A great read and well worth buying, but then I am slightly biased, being his younger daughter.

When Katie and Michaela Wilder are uprooted from NYC and planted in rural Fir Lake, Katie is horrified by their new surroundings: the too-friendly neighbors, the local uniform of sandals paired with socks, the very idea of milking a cow. But while Katie suffers through shopping withdrawal, Michaela transforms into a small-town social firefly, flirting with the hot quarterback and soaking up nature with her new hick-town friends. As in, people who think camping is *fun*. Does Katie even know her sister anymore? And after Michaela hides a jaw-dropping secret from her, does Katie even want to?

                                Book Description

Chronicles of Graduate School is a candid, humorous, and self-disclosing account of one man's Odyessy through American's doctoral training programs.

Dr. Cajal offers an honest and candid story of betrayal, trickery, pettiness, as well as inspiration, encouragement, and reinforcement. There's death, failure, and deceit. There's honor, dignity, and achievement.

This personal rendering is self-disclosing, sometimes self-deprecating, but often humorous and gripping. Dr. Cajal's fascination with his subject shines through as both a testament to his devotion and his perseverance. He is able to offer a unique perspective which illuminates and serves as a multifaceted object lesson about life and learning.

Dr. Cajal's attendance at four prominent graduate campuses in the East, Midwest, Rocky Mountain, and Western regions of the United States and his diplomas make him a rare authority on the nature of how students are treated academically and administratively as they move along the path of novice to published scholar.

What a kick! When I went to college, I thought the system sucked but somehow blamed myself. I know better now. Cajal's professors did things to him that my professors did to me but I never caught the [...]like he did. What a kick! Boy am I glad I didn't go onto graduate school.

                                This book kicks!

This is a great book of historical sports cars, with lots of information and beautiful pictures. This is a neat reference and a great coffee table book, very informative and very very classy too! I really recommend this for a car person, of just someone who loves the history or simply the art of beautiful cars.

                                                Book Description

Bruce Roberts takes us on a photographic tour of fourteen of the famous colonial Virginia plantation houses nestled along the shores of the Lower James River from Richmond east to Jamestown and Williamsburg. Now carefully restored, often with the original furnishings, these houses are glorious monuments to a bygone era.

If you have never visited the James River plantations, this book will inspire you to plan a trip there. If you have, you will find this book a wonderful memento of a special place. Robert's 141 color photographs capture the magnificent exteriors of the houses, as well as their gardens and grounds, and offer rare and intimate glimpses of their interiors and furnishings. The plantations portrayed include Shirley Plantation, one of the oldest in America; Belle Air Plantation, with its unique seventeenth-century frame house containing America's finest Jacobean staircase; and Westover Plantation, site of the elegant Georgian home built by William Byrd II.

The text provides histories of the plantations, presenting them as places where real people lived and workedand still do, in many cases. While the plantations share some common history, each reflects the individual characteristics of the men, women, and children who lived there. In the dining room at Berkeley Hundred, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and eight other presidents enjoyed meals and discussed affairs of state. At Carter's Grove, Roberts photographed the "Refusal Room," where, according to local history, both Washington and Jefferson were refused in marriage by Virginia belles.

Today many of the plantation homes have been designated state and national historic sites, and with this book you can visit them and relive four hundred years of history.

                                                    Book Description

During the past several years, violence by children has dominated the media, exposing this issue as one of the new epidemics of our society. The slaughter of children by children at Littleton-and the backlash of similar incidents-have opened our eyes to the severity of this problem. But what is the cause of all this anger in kids?

In Angry Kids, Richard Berry draws from his experience as a marriage and family therapist to provide some answers about angry kids to parents, teachers, youth workers, counselors, and school social workers. His biblical perspective challenges parents and children to be accountable for their actions while working out solutions.

Well-written, timely, and practical, Angry Kids exposes three root causes of anger in children of all ages. It also explains how parents can inadvertently contribute to that rage, how they can help their children discover the real feelings behind their anger, and how to then teach them techniques for expressing and defusing that anger. Charts, specific examples, and practical application further clarify how to stop the spreading epidemic of angry kids.

                                                    Book Description

Lorenz Hart singlehandedly changed the craft of lyric writing. When Larry Hart first met Dick Rodgers in 1919, the commercial song lyric consisted of tired cliches and cloying Victorian sentimentality. Hart changed all that, always avoiding the obvious, aiming for the unexpected phrase that
would twang the nerve or touch the heart. Endowed with both a buoyant wit and a tender, almost raw sincerity, Hart brought a poetic complexity to his art, capturing the everday way people talk and weaving it into his lyrics. Songs had never been written like that before, and afterwards it seemed
impossible that songs would ever be written any other way.

Lorenz Hart: A Poet on Broadway presents the public triumphs of a true genius of the American musical theatre, and the personal tragedies of a man his friend the singer Mabel Mercer described as "the saddest man I ever knew." Author Frederick Nolan began researching this definitive biography in
1968, tracking down and interviewing Hart's friends and collaborators one by one, including a remarkable conversation with Richard Rodgers himself. A veritable who's who of Broadway's golden age, including Joshua Logan, Gene Kelly, George Abbott and many more, recall their uncensored and often
hilarious, sometimes poignant memories of the cigar-chomping impresario who composed some of the best lyrics ever concocted for the Broadway stage, but who remained forever lost and lonely in the crowds of hangers-on he attracted. A portrait of Hart emerges as a Renaissance and endearing bon vivant
conflicted by his homosexuality and ultimately torn apart by alcoholism.

Nolan skillfully pulls together the chaotic details of Hart's remarkable life, beginning with his bohemian upbringing in turn of the century Harlem. Here are his first ventures into show business, and the 24-year-old Hart's first meeting with the 16-year-old Richard Rodgers. "Neither of us
mentioned it," Rodgers later recalled, "but we evidently knew we would work together, and I left Hart's house having acquired in one afternoon a career, a best friend, and a source of permanent irritation." Nolan captures it all: the team's early setbacks, the spectacular hour long standing ovation
for their hit song, "Manhattan," the Hollywood years (which inspired Hart to utter the undying line, "Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean the bastards aren't out to get you"), and the unforgettable string of hit shows that included "On Your Toes," "The Boys from Syracuse," and their
masterpiece, "Pal Joey." But while success made Rodgers more confident, more musically daring, and more disciplined, for Hart the rounds of parties, wisecracks, and most of all drinking began to take more and more of a toll on his work. When Hart's unreliability forced Rodgers to reluctantly seek
out another lyricist, Oscar Hammerstein II, and their collaboration resulted in the unprecedented artistic and commercial success of "Oklahoma," Hart never truly recovered.

Meticulously researched and rich with anecdotes that capture the excitement, the hilarity, the dizzying heights, and the crushing lows of a life on Broadway, Lorenz Hart is the story of an American original.

The correct opening line of "My Romance" should be "My romance doesn't HAVE to have a moon in the sky" instead of "NEED to have a moon in the sky" as I incorrectly stated in my review here.

Also, in "Lady is a Tramp" I used the third person instead of the original first person usage to demonstrate the lyrics. The original "Lady is a Tramp" is written as "I get too hungry for dinner at eight. I like the theater but never come late...etc." I used the third person because it is the more familiar version.

AND AS A TESTAMENT to the timelessness of Rodgers and Hart's songs, listen to the current Ralph Lauren "Romance" perfume commercial. It features James Taylor and Carly Simon singing the opening and closing lines of "My Romance". It's a beautiful, heartfelt song nicely rendered by Taylor and Simon.

Lorenz Hart is one of the finest lyricists in the history of American musical theater. He is largely responsible for elevating the process of writing lyrics into an art form. Before Hart, lyrics were usually trite and predictable with simplistic rhymes such as "I am blue, and so are you."

Hart wrote lyrics that are cerebral and sophisticated. His compositions are infused with wit and wisdom. He used complex rhymes. An example from "My Funny Valentine": "Your looks are laughable, unphotographable. Yet you're my favorite work of art. Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?"

Another example from "Bewitched": "I'm wild again, beguiled again, a whimpering simpering child again...." And yet another example from "Lady is a Tramp": "She gets too hungry for dinner at eight. She likes the theater but never comes late. She never bothers with people she hates. That's why the lady is a tramp."

Hart could be wistful and romantic as in "My Romance": "My romance doesn't need to have a moon in the sky. My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by. No month of May. No twinkling star. No hideaway. No soft guitar."

Hart's lyrics are consistently observant and very often ingenious. They are the perfect match for the variety and intricacy of Richard Rodgers' superb music.

This biography is quite detailed with a number of amusing anecdotes. It is a must read for those who want to know more about this endearing, erratic, and gifted artist Lorenz Hart. His contributions to musical theater are profound and timeless.

This testimony to man's inhumanity to man is a welcome addition to Holocaust literature. Mr. Rosengarten's personal story is a tribute to the human spirit and the will to survive. Although the book was originally planned for his children, I appreciate the fact that he shared his experiences, his courage and love of family with the general public. Because this authentic and moving book made such a lasting impression on me, I wish to donate a copy to our library.

A truly haunting book in its simplicity. This is not high emotion, but an incredibly comprehensive recollection of life in various concentration camps. Israel Rosengarten conveys the true horror of the concentration camps via his narrative of the details and minutiae of day to day life. It is the very ordinariness of many of the details which jolts us and the capriciousness with which one either lived or died. Mr. Rosengarten's detailed memories of the routine of the camps 50 years after the events is what sets this book apart. It is this which conveys the true horror of the Holocaust and makes it a must read. It is a pity that the Publisher allowed such obviously poor translation and editing to be done of such an important work.

Survival: The Story of a Sixteen-Year-Old Jewish Boy begins with Israel J. Rosengarten's deportation in 1942 to the Belgian concentration camp of Breendonk at the age of sixteen and follows his movements through a series of camps until 1945. Survival is a compelling, personal account that concludes with the Auschwitz death march, liberation by the Americans, and Israel's return to Belgium -- only to discover that he was the lone survivor of a family of seven. This intimate story of what it was like to be a teenage boy in the concentration camps of the holocaust, of surviving almost 1,000 days of internment through a series of incredible coincidences, miracles, and a fierce struggle to stay alive against impossible odds. Survival is a welcome addition to the growing body of holocaust literature.
