Book Description
This is the first scholarly biography of Heinrich BrÜning, chancellor of Germany from 1930 to 1932, and the last politican with a real chance to prevent the Nazi seizure of power. This book analyzes BrÜning's cabinet's economic and fiscal policies for coping with the Great Depression, the diplomatic campaign to redress Germany's grievances against the Treaty of Versailles, and his thoughtful strategy for creating a broad anti-fascist political coalition. Finally it seeks to explain why President Hindenburg and his reactionary advisers decided to topple BrÜning, with disastrous consequences.
Customer Reviews:
Complexity that has often been overlooked.......2001-05-25
I enjoyed reading Patch's book a lot due to the - in my opinion - very balanced description of Bruening within the collapsing Weimar Republic. It descripes very well the complex situation democratic politicians have been faced with at the end of the Weimar Republic. Bruening himself is evaluated regarding his politics under his regime of the "Notstandsverordnungen" by Patch in the context of his intentions and beliefs as well as in the context of tactical moves, he took to maintain power. Unfortunately, contemporary science especially in Germany focuses on specific politicians only and evaluate latter almost always in terms of their standing in relation to the successors in form of the NSDAP from an ideological point of view. Fortunately, Patch does not repeat this mistake. So Bruening, Patch explains clearly, was alienated within the dominant leftish emigrant group opposing the Nationalsocialist due to his somewhat ambivalent point of views. Patch examines correctly, that Bruening was in line with Stresemann, but less gifted, in finding a balance (even after the war) to follow an integrational international policy and failed finally also in his struggle with Adenauer in the 1950s.

William Darby the unknown American Explorer.......2000-02-29
I found this book to be a very indepth resource about a virtually unknown American explorer/adventurer. The author's inexhaustive research into the subject is astounding and enlightening. William Darby made considerable contributions to the early mapping of the state of Louisiana as well as many other regions including Pennsylvania. His work was used by other unscrupulous editors and mapmakers, who gave themselves credit for Darbys work. Anyone interested in early geography and mapping of the Uinted States will find this book a goldmine.

Very Nice.......2006-07-11
While I would like to see more real pics, the drawings do a fine job of identifying the various pumps. Think the glossary could be expanded to include more terms. All in all, I am glad to have the book in my library.
An Ilustrated Guide to Gas Pumps.......2005-10-06
We were very disappointed with the book. We were hoping it would have pictures of old gas pumps and how they should be painted. All it shows is old gas pumps but most are black and white and seem to be drawings instead of actual pictures.
An Illustrated Guide to Gas Pumps: Identification and Price Guide.......2005-09-24
The book was done very well. It was a great help to me in getting started in the collecting of Gas Pumps.
Excellent Resourse.......2005-08-31
This is an excellent book to provide information, model identity and value of old gas pumps. We have used this book to identify and purchase many pumps. It goes with us on every exploration. I highly recomend it to anyone interested in buying old pumps or just haveing a interest in them.
Highly Recommended.......2003-03-07
This book has been a great help to me for identifying and costing pumps that I might want to add to my collection. Nothing published to date even compares.
Book Description
The P-40 was a dependable warhorse that provided valuable service throughout World War II. The earliest operational variants were used to great effect by the famous 'Flying Tigers' in China, and the P-40 went on to serve in almost every theatre of the war. Modellers are well served with P-40 variants from major manufacturers and after-market companies, and this book helps make the most of the products available. The projects featured in clear step-by-step detail include a 1/32 'Flying Tiger' P-40B, an RAAF Kittyhawk Mk.IV in 1/48, a TP-40N two-seat trainer in 1/48 and an RAF Desert Kittyhawk in 1/72 scale. Superb colour reference photographs and detailed lists of kits and accessories available round off this authoritative treatment.
Customer Reviews:
P-40 modelling help.......2007-05-09
A good cross section of projects. The finishing (specifically painting) techniques could be expanded, or even a separate chapter on painting and weathering techniques added to the book. I found the book invaluable to doing a quality build of a 1/48 P-40.
Book Description
Bungalows of the early twentieth century were pleasantly small, well designed, and affordable. The same can be said of Pomegranate's Bungalow Basics books. Each book in the series spotlights a different aspect of bungalows, those charming and efficient homes that came to epitomize the Arts and Crafts style in American residences. Douglas Keister's photographs capture the results of meticulous restorations, while Paul Duchscherer's text provides concise information about bungalow design and history.
Titles in the series: Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Dining Rooms, Doors, Fireplaces, Kitchens, Living Rooms, and Porches.
Customer Reviews:
Do NOT Purchase.......2007-07-30
I ordered the book to gain insight into renovating my 1920 cottage porch. A complete waste of money and time! If you are renovating look elsewhere for ideas and details.
Jeb
Size DOES Matter!.......2007-01-04
Although I have bought quite a few books authored by Paul Duchscherer and/or Douglas Keister, I was disappointed with the physical size of this book. It is only about 5 1/2" x 6 1/2" and much of the detail in the pictures is lost because of it. The print is also mini-sized and cannot be read without reading glasses for us "vintage" readers! (It IS, however, the perfect size for a Christmas stocking stuffer!)
I also had some problems with the constant referral in the first (and only) chapter in the front of the book to note the various 48 pictures throughout the book as the different type of porches were described. It was a constant flipping back and forth of pages to see Figures 15, 28 for this or Figures 4-5, 10, 13, 15-16, and 23 for that. The text was well-written but overall this book could have been so much better...
This is a TINY book.......2005-02-09
The size (approx. 6x6") makes the photos miniscule. Forget
using them for ideas - without a microscope.
Tiny in substance at 70 pages as well.
Content/size in no way justifies the price.

American Collection Farmhouse: 165 Home Plans.......2007-08-29
I feel the plans are very similar to plans already featured in other
books by Home Planners. The floor plans and exteriors are I believe
do not have the farm/country feel I was led to feel in the brief
description of the book. Most of the homes I could not imagine in
a "country,farm-like" setting.
Book Description
This delightful portfolio spotlights proches from around the world-from the classic farmhouse porch to the stone terrace of a Tuscan hideaway and a white-stuccoed tropical retreat overlooking the ocean.
As a traditional space between indoors and out, the porch has its own unique design requirements, and the authors give helpful advice on matching the porch to the house style, and information on porch upkeep, types of paving materials and windows, styles of furnishings, and plants and flowers. Enclosed porches and garden rooms are also here, making Porch Style the complete sourcebook.

"Peace of the Porch".......2000-05-07
Porch Style: Just what I was looking for! I had been thinking of re-designing my back yard to include a porch, and was looking for ideas that illustrated more than the traditional decking and roofing. I wanted a book that each time I browsed I would find something new to think about. I wanted a reference and learning guide. For those who are considering a change to an existing porch, adding a new porch or creating a free-standing porch in a garden area, this book offers many possibilities. The authors provided a wide variety of styles, both conventional and not-so-conventional, decorating tips that stimulated and complimented my own, information and history that educated. A bonus I didn't expect to find but did is a travel book that engulfed me in the scenery of the subjects. So... you're not designing or re-designing a porch, but love coffee table books, it's a great read for the vacationers who once a year find themselves on someone else's porch. The title and the serentity of the cover, simply stated and eyecatching, beckon a reader to reach for it. The chair has your name on it. Just what the doctor ordered - your very own "peace of the porch".

Book Description
A fascinating look at an American institution--a place where public life meets private.
Customer Reviews:
This book is a find ... .......2007-03-06
I stumbled across this delightful and improbable book recently and loved it. It's scholarly, it's profane, it's a personal walkabout that everyone(who lives in a pre-1950 house or New Urbanist enclave) can enjoy without leaving home.
Then I read your reviews and was suprised to see that every guest reviewer gave The American Porch 5 stars while two (philistines) gave 1 star.
May I be the first Amazon reviewer to review other reviews? (Probably not.) The 1-star reviewers are full of stuffing and probably could not tell a front porch from a port cochere, a Porsche 914, or Port-de-Paix, Haiti.
That said, I am enamored by Mr. Dolan's style (Jimmy Breslin meets and perhaps mates with Wytold Rybcinski). Yes he peregrinates but the side journeys are thoroughly enjoyable -- a creek with many fingers, each worth exploring, preferably by a canoe moving with the tides.
I just wrote that sentence to prove that Mr. Dolan is a far better writer than I. Has this man written another book?
Horrible.......2007-01-14
I could not get through this book on my favorite subject. The incoherent ramblings of this book caused me to finally put it down. I tried to skip ahead about half way through and could still find nothing interesting. This author has no self control and thinks that we should be interested in his constant asides that are not at all compelling. I love porches. I have one I wrote essays about them and have done my own extensive research. I was very excited to find that someone had written a book dealing with the history of my favorite architectural idiom and I was very disappointed by this book.
The one bit of insight I got from this book is that maybe the dominance of
European history and cultural on American society is not a grand conspiracy to oppress marginalized people. It is just a phenomenon caused by lazy writers who would rather travel to Italy than Africa. Dolan mentions that many notable scholars believe that the origins of the porch are found in African dwellings. He describes this for a little while with most of his information coming from a single interview. He then states that Italy also has places that kind of look like porches and then describes for two chapters his trip to italy to look at porticos. The coverage of the African roots of the porch was at best cursory and done in way that I felt was kind of gross in its part in continuing to marginalize forgotten history. This book is not worth the effort it takes to try to get through it.
Porches as Bastions of Liberalism?.......2006-08-14
Liberal slant and vulgar language? Well, I guess some people would see even topless statutes of Justice holding her scales in the cool, august halls of federal buildings as vulgar.
Michael's book is wonderful, and pretty much partisan-free. It's a very personal view he takes, but his wit and degree of research is what makes this book worth reading. I now have a much better understanding of porches and their history, and thanks to a previous reviewer of this book, I also understand why porches went away in the modern age, and why their return seems threatening to those who want to keep us divided and scared.
Disappointed.......2003-05-07
I love porches. I want one on my home. I was ready to read about porches. I couldn't get through the introduction of this book. The obvious liberal slant and the use of vulgarity just turned me off. I bet there is some really great information in this book but if I have to be bombarded by the above mentioned I will find my information elsewhere.
The pictures were above average. If I could rate the book on the pictures.... give it a 5.
Very Interesting read.......2003-04-30
I was moved by the book so much that I built a porch on my house too!

If you grew up in rural Gadsden County, Florida, anytime between the 1930's through 1976, you should read this book. Kay Davis Lay interviewed three dozen people who grew or worked in the shade tobacco industry. It is printed in the rough...in the vernacular of those who spoke about the trials and tribulations of raising tobacco.

In Their Own Voices: Transracial Adoptees Tell Their Stories
ASIN: 0275923983 |
Book Description
Reporting on the third phase of a 14-year study of transracial adoption, this volume focuses on the adoption of non-white children by white families. It includes personal interviews with 96 mothers and fathers and 218 children which help to answer questions about the long-term effects of transracial adoption on the adoptees' mental and emotional health and their racial identities. These valuable empirical data are combined with discussions of the practices of adoption agencies, recent court rulings, and alternative forms of adoption.

For the Bluegrass Fan . . ........2006-08-16
Butch Robins is a great banjo player. His writing style may be somewhat unorthodox, but he shares a wealth of information about what he knows - bluegrass and the people (including himself) who helped to shape it.
In this book you will find some tidbits about some of the "stars" of bluegrass music that you are not likely to find anywhere else. Robins also attempts to put to rest some myths about the father of bluegrass through personal observations made during his tenure with the Blue Grass Boys.
The avid fan of bluegrass will want to read this. Be warned, however, that the English language takes a beating and misspellings are rampant. (Jesse McReynolds' name is mentioned often throughout the book and is spelled correctly only a couple of times.) This work could have - should have - been edited a bit more rigorously. Also, be warned that Butch has no reservations about using words that some might consider offensive - hey, we're all adults here - right!?!?!
If the book had been edited a little better, I could have given it five stars just for the information it contains. But with these problems a weak "four star" rating is about all I can muster. Folks who are hungry for anything bluegrass shouldn't let it stand in their way though - buy it!
Great Insight Into the Mind of a Quintessential Banjo Player.......2004-11-20
I bought this book because at one time I barely knew Butch Robins and wanted to see what he had to say. I came away with a profound respect for him and a much greater understanding of the music he devoted his life to. And, Oh Yeah, I learned a lot about Bill Monroe, bluegrass music, and the hard life of a musician on the road.
Butch Robins is an exceptionally bright, driven, flawed human being who has managed to come to a peaceful resolution of his interesting (in the Chinese curse sense) life and this book is the product of that journey. I remember him as a talented and creative musician from whom music effortlessly flowed. He is that, of course, but is also a minor hero of mine after reading how he dealt with his demons.
I will be the first to admit that Butch is no Marcel Proust, but his writing is compelling and his (at times) stream of concsciousness approach to his biography grabbed me emotionally and helped me understand why I love the music so much.
If you are interested in one man's view on Bill Monroe, this is the best version of Monroe's character I have ever read. You have to read the whole book to get the complete picture as Butch is of several minds on the subject to say the least.
I will enjoy this book again after I examine my own feelings on growing up in the 60s and 70s, my love of bluegrass music, and the effects the honesty in this book.

Book Description
In The Galilean Jewishness of Jesus, the first of a three-volume series, author Bernard J. Lee, S.M., reconstructs the historical, cultural and religious fabric of Galilee in the time of Jesus and examines four kinds of Jews who would have been familiar to the religious landscape of Jesus' Galilee: teacher, Pharisee, wandering charismatic, eschatological prophet. Author Lee shows how Christians today can interpret the meaning of Jesus in a way that is both adequate to their religious experience and yet does not violate Jesus' Jewishness.

Prattling On About What We Don't Know.......2000-03-29
Bernard Lee has written a book on a much needed subject. Certainly, he is correct in wanting to explore the Jewishness of Jesus and the implications for the Church today. But, he should have done this. Instead the book is primarily about the process of doing this without ever seriously exploring the subject it talks about exploring.
A full third of the book describes the structure of the rest of the book which he then ignores in the rest of the book. I got the distinct impression while reading that Mr. Lee was wanting to explore the subject but never achieved enough of a grasp of the subject to know what he was exploring.
Don't waste your money or time.

which is to be found at persecution.org By the time you await the
return of this title to in-stock status within the amazon network

In the meantime, I copy-and-paste here below the publisher's 411:
"Christ on the Jewish Road
A Jew by birth, Richard Wurmbrand acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah while in his twenties. In the years that followed, his path crossed with many other Jewish believers. Together they share their stories and speak of a loving heavenly Father who waits with excitement for the return of every prodigal son. (Paperback, 222 pp.)".
A fascinating biography of a fascinating man!.......2002-12-13
This biography is one of the most interesting I have ever read. I found his story to be full of spiritual vitality and love for Jesus that passes all human understanding. This man was a spiritual giant who left a legacy for all Christians to emulate. Christ shone brightly in the life of this devout Messianic Jew.
Christ on the Jewish road.......2000-01-27
This book is a must read for anyone who wants to deepen their understanding of the Jewish culture and their customs. I really liked the fact that the author himself portrays his daily interaction and conversations with various religious leaders, and really gets into the heart and mind of the highest ranking rabbis of the Judaic world. Every page in this book becomes more and more intriguing. Another excellent book to read is "Oracles of God". The author again explores different views of the Judaic religion, and also includes some personal accounts that he experiences as he spends 14 years locked up in Communist prisons. I hope that others find the book "Christ on the Jewish road" as fascinating and unraveling as I did.
