It's only Basic but it's covers a lot.......2007-01-02

I like the book, it doesn't give a lot of information, just the basics which is what it is. The only thing I didn't like is that the "values" of the firearms aren't realistically real world prices, and that it doesn't differentiate between rearsenalled firearms and originals. But for what it does, it's simple and easy to use.

Standard Catalog of Military Firearms.......2004-01-21

There are still some errors and omissions in this edition and in many cases the history doesn't go back to 1870. The values quoted are also different for the same gun listed for different countries. The values are a couple of years old in some cases. The information on automatic weapons appears to be good. I hope this will become as good as his Standard Catalog of Firearms.

Let's Talk Dusty!

Don't Expect A Movie.......2006-07-03

Here's what we Dusty fans waited many years for. Several more compilation CD's and a couple more DVD's have been released in the U.S., U.K., Australia and the rest of the world since this comprehensive overview of Dusty's career was published in 2001, so the book is only complete up to that point. No matter, because these pages cover all of the known, individual studio recordings she made, including several alternate versions, album session outtakes and single mixes that have turned up over the years on various collections. There are many live television and radio recordings floating around out there, many of which have yet to see CD or DVD release, but this book is as complete a volume as we could have reasonably hoped for. And the pictures! There are many photos here I had never seen before, making this book even more of a special treat. The casual listener who is only familiar with Springfield for the four or five songs that get endlessly recycled on the radio could probably not care less about this book, but for us rabid fans, this is indispensable. Highly recommended, and nothing in here to disrespect the woman whose real legacy is a catalog of great music, NOT a string of sleazy tabloid stories. Avoid DANCING WITH THE DEMONS, a badly written "biography" which I won't even dignify with a negative review.

IT's about Music!.......2006-06-04

Dusty Springfield was a legend in the music industry. She was tough and a perfectionist without apologies. This book is about her music legacy and not about her personal problems with addiction or her sexual orientation. There's more to her person than who or what she sleeps with. Dusty was one of a kind. She died too soon at 59 just when she got awarded the O.B.E. (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) on her deathed and died two weeks before her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio. Sadly, there is one honor that I think she should receive and that is the Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for recording. If I only had $15,000 dollars to spare, I would do it for Dusty.

A book about what really counts...her musical legacy.......2004-01-18

There is another book out there on the market that claims to be an authorised biography on her life. If reading a distorted and sensational account of her life is what you want, 'The complete Dusty Springfield' isn't for you. What it is, is a track by track annotation of every recording Britains greatest ever female vocalist recorded. Paul Howes (publisher of the Dusty Springfield Bulletin magazine) has done a fantastic job in detailing every song released (and even some unreleased) from a to z. To achieve what Dusty did in the male dominated music
business of the 60's puts the likes of Madonna in the shade! For anyone with more than a passing interest in how Dusty
achieved so many enduring recordings, time and time again, then
this book, choc full of photographs, is for you. She really
was a one off.

After many failed attempts by other authors to mine Dusty Springfield's troubled personal life for a few ducats, finally a respectable book that focuses on the musical and artistic influence of the White Queen of Soul and gives us intense detail about what went on in her recording studio and not in her bedroom.

A work of intense dedication and love, this compendium contains information on the more than 288 songs that Dusty recorded throughout her 40 year singing career. Includes hard to find information about never released (or yet to be released) tracks, as well as info on albums, live concert line-ups and song lists. Plus, it is full of wonderful photos (many rare, previously unseen) of the Lady herself in various environments and outfits.

A true gift for the true Dusty Springfield fan. I've been waiting for years for a book like this, and finally, Paul Howes has delivered the goods!

An interesting subject presented somewhat dryly.......2007-07-21

Louis Brandeis, law student and lawyer extraordinaire, advisor to a number of Presidents (especially Woodrow Wilson) and one of our greatest most visionary Supreme Court Justices, makes for the subject of a compelling biography. As we learn from Phillip Strum, here was a man who was already considered to be a genuis when he attended Harvard Law School, and graduated number one in the class at a younger age than anyone else. He went on to fame and fortune as an attorney, by devouring information regarding the matter at hand (assisted by his near photographic memory), and truly believing that with logic and persuasion, any conflict could be resolved. He invented the "Brandeis Brief," in which he would go far beyond the usual four corners to which lawyers normally confine themselves, by discussing sociological and other concerns beyond the traditional law. One of his core beliefs was that state and local governments should be given free reign to "experiment" for the common good. Whether it was about the insurance industry, railroads, or management-labor disputes, Brandeis despised monopolies and big corporations, and felt that the state and local governments could and should discourage them, and find ways for smaller businesses to thrive. Brandeis' credo was basically that the common man had extraordinary potential if society would only foster same, but limitations as well, especially when attempting to run a large company that could not mutually benefit management and labor.

Later on in life, he became an ardent supporter and important figure in the Zionist movement, and almost single-handedly convinced skeptical prominant American Jews to support the cause. As a Supreme Court Justice, he and his close friend, Oliver Wendell Holmes, would often dissent from opinions in which the majority would strike down governmental attempts to regulate business and property, and improve society's lot. However, during FDR's presidency, the Holmes/Brandeis position became the majority.

While it is certainly difficult to capture the breadth of Brandeis' life in a signal volume of managable length, Phillipa Strum does an admirable job here. However, I have to say that Strum often spends too much time on subjects that I, quite frankly, found exceptionally dry, such as insurance and railroad disputes. On the other hand, I felt that the section on Brandeis as a Supreme Court Justice felt rushed and unsatisfying. In the end, the persona of Louis Brandeis remained elusive, as if one can really never get to know him (albeit this might have been intentional). Further, Strum provides little context of the contemporary political issues in America, and the impact that the Holmes/Brandeis dissents (which laid the foundation of later majority decisions and was vital to Roosevelt's "New Deal"), impacted on society.

Still, for anyone interested in the life of this great man, I can recommend this book, but it takes a bit of effort to stick with it.
