    Book Description

This riveting true-life adventure of suspense, danger, and endurance chronicles the extraordinary journey of American Ann Bancroft and Norwegian Liv Arnesen, two former schoolteachers, as they set out to become the first women to cross the continent of Antarctica on foot. With their 250-pound supply sleds in tow, they walk, ski, and ski- sail for ninety-four days, over 1,700 miles of crevasse-ridden ice, where any exposed skin would freeze in less than a minute, all while three million children from sixty- five countries tune in to their adventure via satellite phones and the Web. A record of Arnesen and Bancroft's astounding adventure, No Horizon Is So Far is a stirring testament to two modern-day heroes.

2 out of 5 stars Great story poorly told.......2007-09-26

My bookclub chose this book this month and we were very excited by the subject matter. What a disappointment! I've never read such a poorly, blandly and simply written book about such an expansive, exciting and complicated subject! I felt like I was reading a book written for 4th graders, being talked down to to make it simple. I found no difference between the 2 voices of Ann and Liv and would have prefered a much more detailed account of their expedition. I have no doubt that their trip was fascinating in so many ways, unfortunately, they weren't able to translate that into their book. Maybe as educators of children they forgot that adults like a good story on a more sophisticated level.
    Too bad.

    4 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2007-07-18

Now I know what women can do, and it's great. These women seem just like me and yet they did this extraordinary thing. They're probably mad, but good on them.

3 out of 5 stars History In the Making........2005-11-17

These intrepid modern-day explorers dare to go where only penguins march on the ice-encrused terrain. Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, and highest altitude continent, with spectacular views but dangerous to traverse. These two women from opposite ends of the earth, Minnesota in USA and Norway, used to the extreme cold climates, tell their individual stories in this one book with the held of a professional writer, Cheryl Dahle, to piece the diaries together as a journey of their dreams.

The photo sections show them as they looked in their youth and on the various sections of their explorations. They give details of how they trained for this difficult adventure, and of the problems they endured getting the monetary sponsorships. Apple would not donate cash, but did provide $150,000 in computer equipment, phones, and technical support. One photo shows Liv making her regularly scheduled call to CNN out in the middle of nowhere with snow and ice everywhere.

From November 13 to February 18, the summer season when the sun shines twenty-four hours each day, they treked from the northernmost point about Queen Maud land to McMurdo, an American research base. It was quite a four-month feat, but they did it not just for the record but to show youth everywhere what can be accomplished. They were physically in their prime and had trained for years for this extraordinary walkand and skiing ordeal. Liv Arnesen and Ann Brancroft are to be commended; Ann was the first woman in history to cross the ice to both the North and South poles. Liv was the first woman to ski 745 miles to the South Pole solo during a fifty-day expedition. Together, they achieve the dreams both have held onto since young girls playing in the snow in their native homelands.

2 out of 5 stars An average read.......2003-11-23

An interesting story but only an average read. Jumping from one author to another is distracting. There are many other books written about women doing remarkable journeys that make a better read an deserve attention.

5 out of 5 stars No Horizon Is So Far.......2003-11-20

This book is the most inspirational book that I have read in many years. It is not just the journey - although inspirational in it's own way - it is the effect that Ann & Liv's journey has on people around the world. Especially the children. *Horizons* had me in tears in many places and I can not remember a book effecting me in such a profound way before. It is a must read - whether or not you desire journeying to far off places or just to the neighbourhood park.
We all have dreams, aspirations and hopes for a fullfilling life. This book may help you to develop the fearlessness to follow those dreams.
Thank you so much Ann & Liv!

        Book Description

Bernard V Bothmer was a leading Egyptologist and art historian of the mid-twentieth century. Born in Berlin, he emigrated to America in 1941, and soon become an assistant curator of Ancient Art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. In 1950 Bothmer received a small grant to go to Egypt, to familiarize himself with the Cairo Museum and the archaeological sites, and to visit and study the places where the Harvard University-Museum of Fine Arts Egyptian Expedition had done its fieldwork before the War. It was his first visit to Egypt. In this book, his diary of the trip, Bothmer details all the places he visited, from Aswan in the south to Saqqara in the north, and the people he met along the way. He describes the events and experiences of everyday life, from trains and donkeys to the Hotel Luxor, and alludes to the political and social circumstances surrounding the practice of archaeology in Egypt in the middle of the 20th century

Praise for Developing Affordable Housing A Practical Guide for Nonprofit Organizations Third Edition

"Ben Hecht's book explains in clear language everything needed to successfully engage in nonprofit housing development. He tells how to find the money, how to generate good design and quality construction, and how to improve management—a complete, well-researched, and well-presented 'A to Z' approach."
—Henry G. Cisneros, former secretary U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

"Ben Hecht's book makes the affordable housing development process accessible for communities and practitioners everywhere. Developing Affordable Housing should be on the bookshelf of every organization that cares about people and wants to make affordable housing possible."
—Rey Ramsey, former chairman, Habitat for Humanity CEO, One Economy Corporation

"The development of affordable housing is as much a journey as a destination. Ben Hecht's book provides maps and bridges while not losing sight of the challenging but elusive goal of providing decent, safe, and affordable housing."
—Nicolas P. Retsinas, Director, Joint Center for Housing Studies Harvard University

"In our work to increase the supply of safe, decent homes for those who need homes the most, we appreciate the power of partnerships and the value of information. So does Ben Hecht. Developing Affordable Housing is more than a practical guide for nonprofits—it's a library, a trusted advisor, and a road map. Read this book and benefit from its wisdom."

                    Book Description

Can a woman and a man, both of whom are career-oriented, achieve a loving and enduring relationship with children and also advance in their careers? Why is it that women more often than men push for dual-career marriages? What personal and societal difficulties and obstacles do they face? What special difficulties do men experience as a result of this phenomenon? Taking us to the frontier of close relationships--where traditional gender roles are being reevaluated in light of what is both functional and optimal for persons in dual-career partnerships--Two Careers / One Family describes the current world of women and men trying to negotiate new realities at home and at work. It offers a glimpse of the future and the potential that exists for creative restructuring of our concepts of gender. The first part of this unusual and compelling volume describes the societal context of young adults today; the second addresses, in detail, both expectations for and realities of dual-career family life. In the final section, the author makes predictions about the benefits of increased gender equity for same-sex and heterosexual dual-career couples and identifies continuing obstacles and sources of stress for partners in dual-career families. Stimulating, informative, and insightful, this volume is especially helpful to students and professionals in close relationships, gender studies, family studies, psychology, communication, counseling/clinical psychology, social work, and sociology. "It is Lucia Albino Gilbert's recognition of the complexities of the dual-career situation; the interrelations between family, work, and society; and the influence of theory on the very research questions being framed that make Two Careers/One Family: The Promise of Gender Equality more than a summary of current research data. Although Gilbert's own research focuses on the family and career choices of young adults, the book reaches far beyond that topic to place the dual-career family into historical, philosophical, and societal contexts. . . . This brief but comprehensive book would be of interest to any scholar of gender or family issues, whether in psychology, sociology, communications, or women's studies. Gilbert's readable style and useful chapter summaries also make it suitable as a supplementary text for advanced classes." --Contemporary Psychology "The inclusion of a discussion of what trends in dual-career families may mean for same-sex couples is particularly noteworthy. Family professionals, students, and interested lay people should all find this book valuable. It is both well-written and successful in providing a meaningful summary of what we currently know about dual-career families." --Family Relations "It wasn't until after my neighbor and I (he's a nationally known constitutional lawyer) got into a discussion of which detergents we preferred when doing the families' laundries that I realized how profoundly some parts of society are changing. We had often talked about feminist aspects of civil rights legislation, but it was the laundry detergent discussion that did it. Now Lucia Gilbert chronicles the changes we and our children face. Gilbert's Two Careers/One Family is a dramatic and graceful description of the emergence of the two-career family form. Gilbert covers it all--theory and research, history and future prospects, female and male views, and more. During '93, the media will be preoccupied with the 'Hillary question,' but in the meantime change marches on. Read Two Careers/One Family to understand not just this year's media fuss, but what's in store for close relationships in the coming years." --Milton D. Hakel, Bowling Green State University, Ohio "In this volume, Gilbert describes--and astutely analyzes--the interplay between work and family in the lives of dual career couples. She looks at this in terms of the past, the present, and the future, as well as from the perspective of the individual, the family, the work organization, and society as a whole. I cannot think of anyone better qualified for this task than Lucia Gilbert. Her analysis blends her experiences as a counseling psychologist with her skills as a researcher and scholar. . . . Her experiences as a counseling psychologist give the book a valuable richness and compassion for each individual's situation. Her experience as a scholar, one who has been a leader on this topic since the early '80s, serves as a solid foundation on which Gilbert paints an up-to-date empirical portrait of dual career couples with rigor, breadth, and balance. . . . Gilbert's writing is well-organized, concise, and lucid. Sprinkled throughout the text are well-selected excerpts from other sources, cartoons, and informative figures and tables. Combining sensitivity with rationality, her writing epitomizes an androgynous style." --Daniel Perlman, The University of British Columbia "For psychologists, personal relationships scholars, women's or family studies experts already familiar with this body of knowledge, Gilbert describes the conceptual shift in the focus of sociopsychological inquiry from sex, as a biological difference, to gender, as a socially constructed difference. She casts her analysis in terms of the new 'gender as socially constructed difference' perspective, emphasizing gender as an organizing feature of our lives and as a social process." --Daniel Perlman, The University of British Columbia "This book offers a wealth of information and understanding of gender issues. The implications are mind-boggling in terms of potential for relationship and power shifts between wives and husbands, between women and men--at home, in the workplace, in larger social spheres--, for shifts in child-parent roles and relationships, and for new parental role models. It is rich in detail, appealing in lucidity and compassion, and delightfully entertaining in sprinkles of humor that sparkle and nip." --Earl Koile, Professor Emeritus, University of Texas at Austin "I enjoyed reading this book. By placing the dual-career family literature firmly within a framework of gender dynamics, it goes much further than just chronicling the problems faced by dual-career spouses. It also offers explanations and the vision of a way forward. The tone is optimistic, while in no way underestimating the hurdles to be overcome in the path to gender equality. The book also broadens the scope of the discussion to include same-sex dual-career relationships, who have so long been overlooked by researchers studying work and family. The author demonstrates that they too can benefit from the progress being made by heterosexual couples at home and at work. The lifetime perspective on dual-career relationships, together with the book's accessible style, and some delightful hard-hitting cartoons, should make in invaluable reading for anyone contemplating a dual-career relationship, as well as an academic readership." --Suzan Lewis, Manchester Metropolitan University "Lucia Gilbert's Two Careers/One Family is a thorough and current discussion of today's two-career families. The book is energetic and insightful in its review of social science research on these families, including the author's own research. The gender analysis is sophisticated. This book is important reading for those interested in the psychology of gender or the psychology of work and work/family issues." --Janet Shibley Hyde, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin

Michael Schumacher, whose past works include biographies on Allen Ginsberg (Dharma Lion: A Critical Biography of Allen Ginsberg) and Eric Clapton (Crossroads: The Life and Music of Eric Clapton), profiles Phil Ochs, the singer, songwriter, and political activist whose genius was widely admired, but whose work was often made famous by other artists. Ochs, who achieved recognition in the early 1960s, could not escape comparison with Bob Dylan, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. The violence of the 1968 Democratic Convention, where Ochs was a demonstrator, seemed to mark the beginning of the artist's demise and disillusionment. In 1970, he recorded his last album, falling into a depression that ultimately led to his suicide in 1976.

4 out of 5 stars Phil Ochs, the unanswered questions.......2007-08-23

A very good begining to an understanding of one of the 60's great folk singers and the tragedy of his untimely end. We are left with as many questions as are answered. Why wasn't Phil content to stay a political folk singer like Tom Paxton did? What was his problem with women? Why was he so great at expressing his intellectual side but not his personal side? Perhaps there just aren't any answers to these and other questions. Perhaps the book's biggest shortcoming is not dealing with specific songs but perhaps the best way to do that is to listen to them. Lastly, I'm not sure the book really conveys the eternal meaning of Phil's musical genius and why for many he remains the quintessential folk singer/activist. 5 out of 5 stars There But For Fortune.......2000-10-20

Sadly, this excellent biography of one of the sixties generation's great topical songwriters is out of print. Michael Schumacher writes a moving account of Ochs, who was haunted by his own personal demons and political enemies, such as the FBI, a federal agency sworn to protect us. Ochs' songs, including "Crucifixtion" - among the greatest songs of the Vietnam War era - are the heart and soul of a tremendous creative talent. Ochs' descent into mental illness is sad, yet Schumacher's account of it leaves us with meaning and encouragement to follow Ochs' social and political conscience.

3 out of 5 stars An adequate biography, but no great insights.......1999-10-18

When I heard that this book was released, I was eager to read it as a long time Phil Ochs fan. I was disappointed to discover that Schumacher's book provides little new information or insight beyond Marc Eliot's Death of a Rebel.

Too often, Schumacher skims over important periods in Ochs' life, with people and events popping up without adequate explanation. For example, while Schumacher talks about Ochs' travels with Victor Jara and the effect Jara had on him, later in the book Schumacher mentions Jara's death only in passing, with no effort to explain its effect on Ochs. Schumacher also makes a few factual errors, including a claim that Gunfight at Carnegie Hall was never released in the United States. I purchased it on CD nearly 10 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for any Phil Ochs fan. No sugar-coating........1999-02-06

A well-documented biography of one of the greatest topical song writers and singers ever. Easy-to-read account of Phil Ochs life. Includes background information on the circle of people that lived, travelled and performed with Phil Ochs. Also provides a look at the troubled era when Phil was at his peak. Chronicles the hipocrasy and ineptness with which certain parts of our own government tracked and harrassed people with contrary views.

5 out of 5 stars Schumacher's bio. of Ochs is as powerful as the man........1998-09-20

I have been a devoted fan of Phil Ochs since the mid-1960's. I never knew or totally understood the depth of his committment to the forces of life or how this committment drove him into the depths of mental illness. Mr. Schumacher filled in the missing data about Phil that made him much more real to me. After finishing the book, I wept as I listened to his music and mourned for the loss of his courage and vision. Phil's music taught me to be a more sensitive human being, helping shape my political consciousness even to this day. I thank Mr. Schumacher for the effort he made to make Phil more real. My only criticism of the book lies in my disagreement with him as to the quality of some of Phil's more risky efforts at his art, i.e. productions of songs like "Crucifixion". Otherwise, this book is definitely a must read for anyone who wants to learn about the heart and mind of a social movement.
