Book Description
After a youth spent in the East in quiet rebellion and discontent, the author writes about her middle-age surprise of finding herself at home in the intermountain region of Southeast Idaho. Indeed, she finds joy in coming to terms with various "homes"--with life choices, with family, with the need to keep adapting to life's continuing changes. Interwoven in this collection of 17 personal essays is a deep feeling and love for her adopted home--the Intermountain West. It has touched Swetnam with its beautiful, wild expanses and its sometimes eccentric human occupants. Swetnam's recognition of her own increasing foundation and maturity counters the assumption that youth must represent the apex of life.

Real woman; great stories.......2000-12-07
Although Dr. Susan Swetnnam is an award winning professor, public servant, researcher, humanitarian, athlete, baker and knitter, along with being a well published author, it is clear, after reading Home Mountains, she is most importantly a real woman. The collection of charming personal essays, recounts life experiences which can be read for simple entertainment, as a good read, or can be interpreted for a deeper, more individual meaning. It's easy to visulalize the characters in Swetnam's stories, fron the "heavy-set, tightly-permanented woman" taking entries at the County Fair, to the Beauty horse with "her short cocoa legs and stocky golden brown body extended in an exaggerated waking cat pull, black mane tossed out of her eyes." Her appreciation of her home mountains, located in the Caribou National Forest, will entice the reader to look again at their own home "mountains" and find deeper awareness of their physical surroundings. The lessons learned from Swetnam's life parallel meanings readers can identify with. Such as facing the fears that came from her childhood, including the fear of fire, and worse, the fear of living the mundane life of her parents. Along with using the fear of losing the love of her life, in order to keep her eyes open and alert to the life she has with him. In addition, the reader will rejoice with Swetnam as she transforms her humble, vulnerable, and often humorous experiences into insightful examples, learning, among other things, the importance of ordinary time and casual relationships, and letting go, and the pleasures of being alone and how it feels to be loved. The essays can be read individually in small doses to be thought about, or straight through with out being overwhelming. The articles stand alone, but blend together nicely. Take an afternoon and get lost in Swetnam's life, laugh at her characters, envision her mountains, and try not to fall in love with her husband.
Book Description
In the mid-1800s, George Back went on three Arctic expeditions with Sir John Franklin across the barren lands of the Canadian north. But unlike Franklin, Back lived to tell his tales in journals, drawings, watercolors, and maps. Noted writer Peter Steele drew on these sources, along with contemporary accounts, to craft this gripping tale of resilience in the face of incredible odds.
The book thrillingly recounts the near-impossible circumstances of these expeditions — the fights with the Hudson Bay Company, rations that failed to get through, even cannibalism. Back survived these horrors to lead an exploration of the Great Fish River, now named Back River in his honor. His return upstream, hauling his handmade boat up 83 sets of rapids, is one of the greatest-ever feats of heroism and endurance.
A gifted artist and mapmaker, Back was a brave explorer forgotten by history. Steele does him belated justice with this fascinating account.
Customer Reviews:
An exciting biography of an explorer too little known!.......2007-04-17
It takes considerable flair and panache to write history in a way that makes it read like a novel and not very many authors have that ability. Canada's Pierre Berton has it! Dava Sobel and Simon Winchester are certainly up to the task! In "The Man Who Mapped the Arctic", Peter Steele demonstrated his rightful claim to membership on that short list. Steele, a physician who has spent most of his life in the North and an arctic adventurer and mountaineer in his own right, has eloquently told us the astonishing tale of George Back, Franklin's undeservedly obscure and unsung Lieutenant and his astonishing exploits in exploration that rival Samuel Hearne's or Lewis and Clark's in their extraordinary scope and difficulty.
Steele's prose has painted a vivid picture of Back's working life as a Navy Lieutenant and explorer and the compelling setting in which the story takes place - endless waterfalls and rapids; excruciating clouds of mosquitoes or black flies; extreme temperature swings; backbreaking 90 to 100 pound loads hauled over strenuous ankle-breaking portages; the open water of Lake Winnipeg, Lake Superior and Great Bear and Great Slave Lake that might better be described as inland oceans when observed from the perspective of a canoe; changeable unpredictable weather; the dumb-founding athleticism of ten to twelve men paddling in perfect synchrony at 50 strokes per minute for hours on end singing, if you please, to provide a rhythm and take their minds off the numbing pain in their backs and shoulders; lost rations, near starvation and cannibalism; the stinging cold and near endless dark of sub-arctic winter camps; the political struggles, bickering, corporate fighting and espionage that occurred as a matter of course in the conflict between the Hudson Bay Company and the Northwest Company; and much, much more.
Of Back's cultural indoctrination by fire upon his arrival in Canada, for example, Steele wrote:
"He knew nothing of the rival fur companies' years of bitter forest skirmishes, sniping from riverbanks at each others' canoes, occasionally taking prisoners, and resorting in extremis to arson and theft, kidnapping and murder - tantamount to open warfare." "Neither did he understand the cultural differences that might arise between himself and a disparate group of French Canadian voyageur canoemen, Indian hunters and Eskimo guides, who he expected would guide them through the most barren and inhospitable land anyone could imagine, among people utterly ignorant of intrusive Westerners and their strange ways."
In other words, Steele has provided us with an exciting biography of a talented naval officer, explorer, mapmaker, outdoorsman and survivor who has languished for too long under the shadow of Franklin, his considerably less talented superior. The Yukon News praises "The Man Who Mapped the Arctic" by suggesting that it is destined to become a classic story of Canadian Arctic exploration. I concur.

An Author Who Does Extensive Field Research.......2004-11-30
As a resident of the Alaskan Arctic, I find it refreshing to read a book by a biographer who does not just sit at the computer, or camp out in a stately library somewhere. Steele, a doctor and mountaineer, as well as a biographer, actually went out and retraced the distant and remote routes across Northern Canada --the same routes of his subject--British explorer George Back. He followed the exploits of Back on foot, and also by canoe, boat and plane, including a forced landing on a remote lake.
Steele also traveled to Back's birthplace in the Cheshire area of England, and the areas of France where he was held as a prisoner of war well before he reached he age of 20.
Much has been written about a contemporary of Back's, the courageous John Franklin, but much less about Back himself. Perhaps this is because Franklin and his 129 crewmen perished in a tragic search for the Northwest Passage. Steele's book should help Arctic enthusiasts learn more about Back, Franklin's Lieutenant on three earlier Arctic expeditions.
Back, who served in the British Navy as a teenager, and spent five years in French prisons, showed early maturity, a very hearty constitution and a strong will. He successfully explored vast areas of Northern Canada and discovered and traveled the Back River, including shooting its 83 rapids.
Steele, reflecting his medical background, notes that Back died in his bed at a relatively advanced age (for that time) of 82 years old. Back kept very active, and was also a fine mapmaker and artist.
Steele also provides a social and economic profile of England in the early and mid 1800's, to show the rather limited options for many bright and ambitious young citizens. Thus, Arctic exploration, despite all its dangers, became a way up and out from a rather entrenched power structure.
I could feel the inner drive of explorers like Back, Franklin, Parry and others as they sailed out of English ports, bound for uncharted Arctic waters, and expected to be gone for years at a time, with no way of communicating good or bad news, or getting rescued. Kind of like our space program at present, although we do have much more communication, but still plenty of risk.
Pick up this book like I did, during several months when the sun does not rise above the horizon in Arctic Alaska. Find a comfortable chair by a sturdy floor lamp, and call your Greenland Husky or other faithful dog to your side, and return again to the days of George Back and his Arctic explorations.

Great read!.......2003-11-13
We need more of this kind of book in Canada.
This was a fun read. The only complaint I have is the maps could have helped illustrate the routes taken.
#2 on Globe and Mail Bestseller List .......2003-10-09
An incredibly well researched book. The Man Who Mapped the Arctic is a must read for anyone interested in Canadian and European history or Arctic exploration. This is not dull Canadian history! Peter Steele's writing is witty and engaging.

Mighty Minns/strikes again.......2001-03-11
This book should inflame every reader to demand congress to taken action and slay this beast. From the TERMINATOR of the HOBBLE IN BOSTON to the Lawlessness of the Courts in Buford & SON to the OKLAHOMA WITCH TRIAL ,Minns exsposes the underbelly of the beast.
Finally, a factual book about the dark side of the IRS.......2001-03-11
I am an economics professor at a university located in Washington State. I recently received a copy of Mr. Minn's book from a friend of mine at the Seattle Times. I think I have read every major book on the IRS, but Mr. Minn's book provides new facts and information. Minns not only dispells any doubts that taxpayers may have about the ruthless antics of the IRS, but he also provides valuable tips and information about tax code, tax shelters, offshore banking and important guidelines for staying out of harm's way with the IRS. I was extremely moved as he shared the blow-by-blow accounts of his IRS court cases, and was appauled by the devastating and unconscionable acts that some IRS agents employed in order to bring about charges of tax evasion. From one who has considered himself an expert on tax law and the IRS, my hat is off to this vallant crusader. I was highly enlightened and recommend this book to any taxpayer who wishes to avoid the attention of the IRS.
If you file a Tax Return, this book is a must read!!.......2001-03-09
Here I am in the beginning of what promises to be the busiest "tax season" ever, and into my office comes "How to Survive the IRS", a pulse quickening, rapid read of struggles with the formidable Internal Revenue Service by one of the great champions of the people. I couldn't put it down! Unlike other lawyers who surrender to the IRS' maze of bureaucracy and deceptions, Michael Minns goes in with the singular intent to fight and win for his clients who have been wronged. His insight and tenacity are unparalleled, his candor refreshing and his integrity embraced by those of us who strive daily to right the wrongs to our fellow citizens. I highly recommend this book to all of my clients and tell them to pass it on. His first book "The Underground Lawyer" was just a interesting and is a must read for everyone who needs a lawyer.

New Directions for Philanthropic Fundraising. Sponsored by the Indiana University Center on Philanthropy. Number 12, Summer 1996
Product Description
This report investigates the ways local governments in California have used the ballot box to raise taxes, assess fees, and pass bond measures. It notes sharp increases in school bond proposals, especially after 2000, when Proposition 39 lowered the voter approval threshold from two-thirds to 55 percent. It also shows how voter reaction to fiscal measures varies according to region, election timing, the type of measure proposed, and the service to be funded. Finally, it suggests that dedicated taxes for popular programs are more likely to garner voter support than a general tax, despite the fact that special taxes require a supermajority for approval. It also notes, however, that this approach may leave some traditional government services, such as libraries and parks, with inadequate funding.

From the supplier: Courts have extended disclosure of cash transaction requirements to attorneys receiving cash sums in excess of $10,000 despite the fact that disclosure has been asserted to violate the attorney-client privilege. Under IRC section 6050I, disclosure must be made by businesses receiving sums over $10,000 in a single transaction. Disclosure includes identifying the payor. The statute is intended to help the IRS track down unreported income. The federal courts have ruled that such payments are not protected under the Fifth or Sixth Amendments or legal ethics.

From the supplier: Two 1995 Tax Court Memorandum decisions identified limitations placed on basis calculations used in IRC section 1244 stock loss deductions. Section 1244 provides ordinary loss deductions for investments in qualifying small business corporation stock. In Bledsoe, the Court limited basis to contributions to the corporation that were expressly designated as payment for shares of stock. In Schwartz, the taxpayer's pledge of assets to secure the corporation's financing was not considered an economic outlay and could not be used to increase basis in the taxpayer's stock.

Customer Reviews:
About "The Art of Shelling".......2007-07-03
This is an excellent book which gives you exact locations of where to
find shells in various areas of the USA. It is written in a way that
most people can understand...it is specific and clear. While at the
New Jersey shore recently, I enjoyed finding out about the shells that
could be found in Gateway National Part at Sandy Hook. The book gives
good directions as to the locations of the shells so I would recommend
it for anyone who likes collecting.
Not the best reference for a collector.......2007-05-13
One of the main issues is the lack of color illustrations or even colored pictures for the shells. Instead the book relies on black and white drawings which are not as helpful to collectors.
The book does not give a true depiction of shells of the eastern coast. Areas includes are Florida, a small bay in North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Cape Cod, and Maine. South Carolina, Georgia and much of North Carolina is left out.
On the other hand this book was very instructive about cleaning and properly caring for shells.
Where in the World are all the Sea Shells?.......2002-04-07
This book will help anybody on the Eastern Seaboard find shelling spots from Maine to Florida. It is especially helpful with local customs and laws.
Superbly written and organized.......2001-02-16
Now in an expanded second edition, Chuck and Debbie Robinson's The Art Of Shelling continues to be the definitive guide to finding shells and other beach collectibles at shelling locations ranging the American coastline from Maine to Florida. This compendium of information about the seashore and seashells has expanded to include new shelling locations, information on additional seashells and sea creatures, more illustrations, and an enhanced travel reference section. Superbly written and organized for the non-specialist general reader, The Art Of Shelling is a perfect guide for the hobbyist and collector, as well as the simple vacationer seeking unique mementos of their seaside visits.

Book Description
This generously illustrated book examines the origins and development of the summer cottage in the resort communities of New Hampshire's White Mountains between 1870 and 1930. Bryant F. Tolles, Jr., author of The Grand Resort Hotels of the White Mountains: An Architectural Legacy (1998) and New Hampshire Architecture: An Illustrated Guide (1979), associates the cottages and their outbuildings with a group of forty architects and architectural firms, as well as noted regional builders. He also links the summer cottage phenomenon directly with the origins and growth of the summer resort hotel industry and its distinctive architecture. While focusing primarily on architecture, including such details as the personal eccentricities, habits, and pastimes of cottage owners that often led to distinctive design features, Tolles also interprets these unique dwellings in a broader context of the nation's social, cultural, and economic history.
Customer Reviews:
Summer Cottages in the White Mountains.......2000-06-23
This book is a well researched and, to my personal knowledge, an accurate historical account of these houses. The description of the house that my great grandfather had built for our family was biographically accurate and architectually detailed. Beautifully illustrated. Having personal details of the lives of the people who built these houses adds depth and interest. A wonderful reading experience for people with N.H. roots and interest in turn of the century architecture.
Customer Reviews:
The best gift to your child(ren): read this book!.......1999-10-25
It's amazingly easy to hurt a child's feelings, repeatedly, inadvertently, and with consequences which only show up 20 years later in the child's lack of happiness or confidence (or worse). This book describes step by step how to do it differently, without fancy theory, but with plenty of worked out examples and dialogs.
Parent's time is always scarce: this book will pay for your time investment after just a couple of techniques are used! I read it one page a night (60 seconds per day or so) and I wish I had read it several years ago.
Book Description
This book shows how nine talented artists - David Ackles, David Blue, Tim Buckley, Tim Hardin, Fred Neil, Phil Ochs, Tom Rapp, Tim Rose and Tom Rush - each expanded the standard pop blueprint of the day and made a significant contribution to rock's coming of age, with songs like "If I Were a Carpenter," "Everybody's Talkin'" and "Hey Joe." Features photos throughout, discographies, and a great 32-page color section.
Customer Reviews:
Obscure (sort of) performers that made a difference.......2005-10-04
I'm pleased to see this book still available. These performers, although not well known by the general public, changed the direction of pop music. By most accounts, for the better too. The good news is that their recordings are more easily available now than for many years in the past. These folks were story-tellers. Too bad that most country and pop performers now are so boring. This group definitely were not.
Excellent introduction to artists who shouldn't be forgotten.......2005-04-14
Some of the artists showcased in this slim volume have devoted cult followings now; others are still unjustly in the shadows. All are uniquely gifted songwriters & performers whose work deserves to be better known. I knew very little about some of them, even though I was a young teenager during their prime; but after finishing this book, I sought out several of their CDs & was not disappointed. For example, I was already somewhat familiar with Tim Buckley's music, but Tim Hardin & Fred Neil were little more than legendary names to me, with just a couple of songs each known only through cover versions ... now their music is a vital part of my life. Brend does a fine job of giving the reader a basic biography & artistic overview of each man, as well as a feel for the times that shaped them, and which they helped to shape. Well worth reading! And be sure to investigate the music when you're done, via the samples available here at Amazon.com. You'll be buying a few new CDs yourself!
Songs From Aging Children.......2002-02-10
In this lavishly illustrated little book, Mark Brend offers brief critical bios of several of the most influential 60's singer/songwriters, nearly all of whom have fallen under the radar of the contemporary music scene. Most are now deceased, and of the living only Tom Rush continues to tour, although his recording output in recent years has been sparse. But all of these troubadours had real influence in their prime, and Brend does a terrific job of explaining just what that influence was. He is obviously a real fan of these artists but is able to view their lives and careers objectively. I have seen most of them perform and for me this book revisits an important part of my life and the music that has mattered to me.
worth reading.......2001-06-26
this book has chapters on some of the best songwriters of the era, ranging from the, more or less anyway, fairly well known ( like tim buckley and phil ochs)to the undeservedly obscure, like david ackles. these artists do vary in quality, but the stories are always at least interesting, and often fascinating. there are lots of fine pictures of the performers in the book as well,if anything the work is a little short. people who enjoy the writings of richie unterberger and vernon joynson probably will like this as well
