Hope.......2007-09-01
This is a well written personal history of a terrifying time most of us can only imagine. Mr. Orenstein does an amazing job of telling us chronologically what happened to him and those closest to him. What amazed me throughout was the deep vein of hope that was palpable no matter how bad things seemed to be. Perhaps Mr. Orenstein, his family and friends were not always optimistic about their chances but they seemed to remain faithful to one another, their beliefs and their undying faith that the evil that was pervasive during WWII would be beaten down eventually.
I have a deep love of WWII history that was sparked by works of Stephen Ambrose and has crossed over to numerous authors and survivor's stories since. Mr. Orenstein has made his daily life much more visible than some have by focusing on how he dealt with life day in and day out.
To all of the survivors of war, bless you and be strong. Tell your story!
A possibly biased review..........2004-02-13
A possibly biased review because I am related to Henry Orenstein, but I'll do my best to be honest:
I love the book! A couple years ago, I read it for a social studies project. I found out a lot about my family while learning about the horror of reality of that era. I believe Henry Orenstein must have been incredibly brave and clever to escape 5 Nazi camps without any serious injury or disease. I'm proud to say that he is still living today.
pretty good.......2003-04-11
i had to read this book for an english project. at first i didnt really know if it look good until i started really reading it. Henry Orenstein lead a very interesing life so it was a good book
A great and funny book about the holocaust!.......2000-01-21
I read this book a few years ago and was deeply impressed with the story. The author's voice is wry and humorous despite the incredibly dark experience he has endured. It's really a holocaust experience with a twist in that the ironic way that Henry Orenstein survives is key to what makes the story special. This book is well worth a read, especially considering the passing of the generation of people who suffered through those horrific times.
Book Description
"Strong mental faculties and a vigorous constitution" were among the attributes of Zenas Leonard, according to the publisher of the 1839 edition of this book, which the Bison Books edition reproduces. In the spring of 1830, Leonard, a native of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, "ventured to embark in an expedition across the Rocky Mountains, in the capacity of clerk to the company. The last letter received by his parents, left him at the extreme white settlement [Independence, Missouri], where they were busily occupied in making preparations for the expedition to the mountains—from whence he promised to write at short intervals; but one misfortune after another happening to the company, he was deprived of all sources of communication—so that no tidings were received of him until he unexpectedly returned to the scenes of his childhood, to the house of his father, in the fall of 1835—after an absence of 5 years and 6 months!"
Written "in response to popular demand," so to speak, Leonard's account of these years, based in large part on "a minute journal of every incident that occurred," is recognized as one of the fundamental sources on the exploration of the American West. A free trapper until the summer of 1833, when he entered the employ of Captain B. L. E. Bonneville, Leonard was part of the group sent under command of Captain Joseph Walker to explore the Great Salt Lake region—an expedition that resulted in Walker's finding the overland route to California. The Narrative ends in August 1835, with Leonard's return to Independence.

Zenas Leonard was a true mountain man. He lived in the Rockies for five years, cut off from civilization, surrounded by hostile Indian tribes and vicious grizzly bears, providing for himself with his guns and traps.

Exciting, thrilling, never a dull moment.......2001-05-22
I'd give this book six stars if it were allowed! Zenas Leonard came out to the American West as a fur trapper in 1831, this is his own narrative. He started out under the leadership of Captain Gant trapping beaver and traveling extensively throughout the west. Later he joined in with the famous Captain Joseph Walker expedition to explore a passage to California. You simply can not put this book down! Indians, grizzlies, starvation and thirst, freezing temperatures, more Indian troubles, first white men to see Yosemite and the Redwoods, one adventure after another! Vivid descriptions of what it was like back then. An engrossing book!

Excellent Guide for Corporate Taxation.......2007-06-19
This is an excellent book to understand Subchapter C. The order it follows is methodical. It goes to explain all the tax issues that arise from formation of the corporation (incorporation and contributions) to midlife events (dividends, redemptions) to liquidation. It deals with taxable and non-taxable reorganizations and with such interesting issues as Section 304 transactions. It is not and cannot be a complete guide to corporate taxation. it would have to be several volumes, but it accomplishes perfectly what it is meant to do. Cheryl Block did a fantastic job. the example and explanations are very useful.
Corporate Tax for Dummies.......2006-03-24
This volume reduces into terms capable of being readily absorbed the application of Subchapter C. The examples and explanations are basic while conveying the needed concepts of various treatments of contributed property, boot, distributions, attribution rules, etc.

Best Corporate Tax Review Book on the Market.......2004-11-20
Professor Block's book is really, really good - very easy to understand. She manages to make what are complex tax laws understandable -- I couldn't imagine taking my corp tax class without this study aid. The writing is unusually good for a law treatise.
Definitely got me through Corp Tax with flying colors.......2004-03-16
Although I went to every class of Corp. Tax at the LL.M. level and read every assignment, things never came to me as clearly as they did after working with this book. Ms. Block does an excellent job of describing transactions and their tax consequences with intelligent simplicity and brings even the hardest concepts within the tax novice's grasp.
The Best.......2002-08-07
It's the best corporate tax book out there period.
Extremely Helpful.......2002-08-04
Corp. tax is one of the more difficult courses in Law School, but is highly recommended for anyone with an interest in transactional practice, or looking to improve their skills in using challenging statutory material. This book makes the subject a great deal easier---one of the better study aids I've used. The explanations are very lucid, and the problems are extremely helpful for exam prep. Keep this within arm's reach of your I.R.C.
Must have.......2000-02-07
During my LLM corp. tax class I found this to be invaluable. I also refer to it in my practice.

Book Description
Drawing principally on original source materials, Nancy Goyne Evans's elegantly written and extensively illustrated Windsor-Chair Making in America presents an authoritative and absorbing historical picture of the vernacular chair shop and industry. Of the book's five chapters, three deal extensively with the craft shop. Evans discusses everything from structure to tools and equipment, from shop personnel to power sources, and from raw materials to ornament, both painted and stenciled. A chapter on marketing explores the booming Windsor-chair trade in the American coastal South and the islands of the Caribbean, furniture distribution to local, overland, and overseas markets, and general methods of doing business. Another section explores consumerism and the use of Windsor furniture in domestic and public settings.
Students and interpreters of American material culture and life will find here an abundance of new material organized and presented to provide comprehensive insights into craft life and product distribution in America. Evans's book should have pride of place in the libraries of collectors, curators, practicing and amateur furniture craftsmen, and anyone interested in early American studies trades, folk art, and pre-industrial technology.
This book includes an extensive index, detailed maps, an indispensable paint color chart based on more than 1,200 references, a select bibliography, and a wealth of photographic reproductions.

IF YOUR AT ALL INTERESTED IN THIS SUBJECT.................2007-04-25
It you have any interest in calligraphy, luminations, or just pure beauty, then this is one small volume you will want to add to your collection. Now I must admit that the skill needed to create these wonderful works of art is much greater than I will ever have, but that is okay. I use works such as this purely for inspiration. I figure that it is a nice world just to know "someone" out there is able to creat something like this. It gives me something to shoot for. This work is certainly not for beginners but I don't think a beginner would be hurt one bit for having read and studied it. I shows just what can be done if you have the skill and knowledge. This is always a good thing. I also appreciated the authors notes on the history of this art form. I do know something of history, and this information alone was worth the price of the book. Recommend this one highly.
Wonderful resource!.......2006-11-01
This book has helped me to learn and try my hand at several different styles of medieval illumination. I highly recommend this to any potential scribes out there!
The Illuminated Alphabet.......2006-03-13
"This book contains the best things to know to begin doing Illuminated manuscript writing. The authors list great resources, give useful lists, and then help you get started!!
In addition, I like the several styles of complete alphabets, how they are presented and described, and how to do the illumination techniques. It has taken me several years and attempts to find a book this beautifully complete. Other potential authors and publishers could learn from this wonderful book, because finally I feel confident enough to tackle the several projects I've got waiting for me. You don't have to be an artist to begin to do this work when you use this book.
Thank you to the authors and the publishers for their insight. Now I have the knowledge to be more confident in knowing where to start and how to progress with illuminating some of my projects.

Illuminate your journals.......2005-03-25
A gorgeous book showcasing and demonstrating decorative calligraphy. Step by step instructions for a wide variety of styles and period pieces of illuminated lettering. A great way to add some interest to sketchbook journals. HOWEVER! A patient and attention-to-detail mindset is required for this exacting art form.
Solid starting point for anyone doing illumination.......2002-11-04
When you start illumination, you want to try different styles to see which fits your interest and talents best. This book creates a step by step walk-through for many different styles in a do-able manner for a beginner. But beyond that, the book provides examples of where to go from there. For instance, start of with the letter used as the example. When you finish that, try including one of the borders shown in that section using the same skills developed by following the example.
What this book accomplishes is to help you develop the "vocabulary" used by the sample styles. As you develop the vocabulary that the sample styles illustrate, you are on the path for more complex work (i.e. see Christopher De Hamel's books). Also, by learning the basics that this book provides, you are ready to play with styles not covered because you have the basis for where other styles came from or what they led into.
Customer Reviews:
Informative as a history book not a guide or Royal tell all.......2003-11-16
An extremely nice paperback history book about Kensington Palace. You get the history of the place from it's beginnings (there's been something built on the site for about a 1000 years) but mostly covering the period from the 17th century onwards through today.
There are a lot of photographs of various sections of the building complex, some more than 100 years old, both inside and out as well as maps and diagrams from past centuries.
The history of the place is very detailed with period illustrations and covers many of the occupants as well as the structure itself.
I really like the book and would recommend it to anyone who has been or is thinking of going to London. You will learn a lot about the Palace but be warned, this isn't a guide book. You will learn about a lot of what is there but you aren't told just what isn't open to the public (if you are it isn't very clear and I missed it)and there is no Prince(or Princess)lived here detail (Charles & Diana barely mentioned in comparison to some past inhabitants).

Concert pianists perform from memory, a brutal but inescapable convention of musical life. Of all the demons they face onstage, none is greater than the fear of a memory slip. Cutting's bitter, dignified memoir tells the story of a musical life nearly shipwrecked by childhood molestation at the hands of her minister father. Beginning with a terrifying slip that triggers the gradual breakdown of a successful concert career, the narrative moves through hospitalization, painfully recovered childhood memories, and finally, a struggle toward compassionate understanding and a truce with the past. Throughout, she weaves the powerful theme of music: as a bribe, an addiction, a joy, and an escape.
Book Description
"There are three kinds of memory slips, I tell my students. One, when Memory slips but you find your way back without losing a beat. Two, when you don't find your way back until the downbeat. Three, when you don't find your way back in time and must stop and restart the music. I don't tell them about a fourth possibility , when one memory slips, another intrudes and you don't find your way back for a very long time." -- from Memory Slips
Linda Katherine Cutting's memoir of family and music movingly portrays the trauma and recovery of a woman whose childhood was betrayed by those who were supposed to protect her. In exquisite prose she illuminates the inner life of a child for whom the gift of music was the only refuge, a refuge that protected her as long as it could. For when Linda began to remember what her father had done to her and her brothers -- both eventual suicides -- she stopped being able to remember Beethoven's notes.
Linda Cutting's writing bears witness to what had occurred. Her stunning "Hers" column, originally printed in the New York Times Sunday Magazine in October 1993, was clipped and carried in wallets and pocketbooks and reprinted around the world. Now, her memoir Memory Slips, will not only reach out and give voice to victims of abuse but also move anyone who cares about the power of writing, the beauty of music and the innocence of children. "In her writing, Linda Cutting displays the same grace, thoughtfulness and talent that she's always brought to her music-making. With courageous candor, Linda has shone light into the darker corners of her own compelling life, and we, the readers, are richer for it." --John Williams, Academy Award-winning composer and conductor laureate, The Boston Pops Orchestra "This is a mesmerizing story about the loss of music and innocence and -- very nearly -- the self; and the subsequent recovery of all those things. It is testimony to the power of Linda Cutting's writing that the same book that tears at your heart can, in the end, make it rise up with gladness." --Elizabeth Berg, author of Talk Before Sleep, Range of Motion and The Pull of the Moon

Serendipity.......2005-10-22
So very glad to have discovered this audiocassette in a discount
bookstore nearby before making a long trip in my car. What glorious music! What a unique autobiography, I never hear such
a perfect combination of writing and music - and some of my
favorites! Schumann's Scenes from Childhood ... And the Beethoven and Rachmaninoff, a magnificent pianist to enjoy for
hundreds of miles! I was also a prizewinning pianist, and had
memory-slips galore, and other similar experiences to relate to!
My most favorite audiocassette of all time.
impressive.......2004-06-13
This memoir of an extraordinarily gifted pianist who found the courage to get help for the years in which she was sexually abused by her clergyman father stands out among similiar memoirs. That she not only found the courage to heal but to report her father to the church is a remarkable testimony to what good therapy, support, one's dedication to their craft, and personal determination to heal can do. The author's brothers were likewise abused, and wound up dealing with depression and mental illness. That the author's piano lessons first served as a bargain between her and her father, as a bribe for not telling about the abuse, makes her journey both as a professional musician, a writer, and a human being especially poignant.
The truth sets us free.......2002-06-01
I have read many personal accounts of incest (and other forms of sexual abuse). I am also a survivor of incest (and other sexual abuse as well), and I am a dancer. This book very accurately depicts the effects of child abuse on art, memory, and expression. Linda Cutting achieves this through an honest memoir of her own experience of memory recovery in adulthood, and it's effect on her life and art. Often her words spoke my own experience, particularly in her descriptions of having a flashback. Severe child abuse alters the structure of our minds, but through truth we can transcend. This book is superbly written. With very little description of the actual incest I was transported into her world. I could see her as a child, and the life she lived in. My heart reached out to her. If I ever want someone to understand what life is like for an adult survivor of incest this will be top on my list of recommendations. After reading this book I felt as if I had sat down with Linda, and she had told me her story. I thank her for having the courage to share her story with us. Her book is a great help to other survivors and for anyone who seeks to understand the life of an artist who is also a survivor of child abuse. This book helped me to get in touch with my own strength and empowerment to stand tall despite my past, and to continue my artistic work.
Stellar.......2001-12-17
An absolutely stunningly clear account of losing memory- and many of the complexities within this experience- and of reclaiming resilience, balance, and self. As Cutting loses her memory of the music she is performing (music she has memorized and played over and over) in the process of working through her child abuse history, her story is a highly interesting account of the complexities of "memory slips" in an adult. Cutting navigates her history of child abuse with incredible strength and determination, and ultimately with great compassion for her family. Beautifully read by Cutting- some of her piano playing is on this audio cassette which is one reason I would recommend the audio version. Her musical expression is an important part of her story. The audio may be helpful for both women and men who have experienced sexual abuse as children/ adolescents as well as for those who want to understand the impact of this kind of an abuse history. In addition, this audio may be highly valuable in exploring the specific psychological dynamics that can arise with those who are or have been musical performers. The depth of this audio is difficult to articulate- the exploration of family psychological dynamics is worth every penny.
Incredibly poignant.......2000-06-09
In "Memory Slips", concert pianist Linda Katherine Cutting chronicles her gradual breakdown and healing as she comes to terms with the horrendous abuse, physical, emotional and sexual, that she suffered at the hands of her parents as a child. Included in this memoir is the erosion of her career due to memory loss; her hospitalization and treatment, the disintegration of her first marriage, and her slow, painful, climb back to life.
This book testifies to both the worst and best of the human spirit: agonizing, as one relives the abuse Ms. Cutting suffered, and heroic, as she fights to reclaim her life and music. The abuse she suffered becomes all the more real under the dignified, poised and restrained words she uses. A deeply wrenching and uplifting book.
