As Jenny Rees searches for the truth about her father she recaps a lot of information available in previous writings about the Cambridge spy ring from a fresh perspective and introduces a personal element lacking in the other works dealing with his involvement.

      Book Description

These autobiographical and analytical essays by a diverse group of professors and graduate students from working-class families reveal an academic world in which "blue-collar work is invisible." Describing conflict and frustration, the contributors expose a divisive middle-class bias in the university setting. Many talk openly about how little they understood about the hierarchy and processes of higher education, while others explore how their experiences now affect their relationships with their own students. They all have in common the anguish of choosing to hide their working-class background, to keep the language of home out of the classroom and the ideas of school away from home. These startlingly personal stories highlight the fissure between a working-class upbringing and the more privileged values of the institution.

4 out of 5 stars Voices to be heard.......2001-05-02

I read a selection from this book for a class, which prompted me to read the rest of the book. Really interesting narratives written by a number of first generation university students from a number of races and cultures, all from working class backgrounds.

A common theme is the feeling of living in two worlds - home and school - worlds which seldom intersect. Students speak of trying to fit in with peers who were more well off, explaining why they didn't have money to go out on the weekend, or why they couldn't attend various events or spring break flings because they had to work.

Entitlement - not quite feeling like they belonged at the university... watching peers walk around like they owned the place and were born to it.

Identity - being changed by the college experience, and wondering how the experience would change their relationship with family/community who seemed, by comparison, so unchanged. Several spoke of becoming bi-lingual - speaking one way at the university and another at home. Communication styles that were vital to being understood and accepted both places.

The irony of higher education being such a point of pride for the family, who made huge sacrifices for the student to be the first in the family - not knowing that the college experience would potentially pull the student away from identifying with that family/community working-class culture.

University values - While schools are at least talking about racial unity, there was less attention given to class unity. Many struggled with the idea that the whole purpose of getting a university education was to "get a brighter future", a "better opportunity", to "escape" having to work a blue collar job. If blue collar is who I am and who my famliy is, why is that something to escape? These were conflicting messages for many... be inclusive and sensitive to differences, but the white collar world is a higher, more worthy pursuit.

The only reason I gave it 4 out of 5 stars is the length of the book. The narrative format is engaging, but I felt the collection was a little lengthy to hold my interest through the entire book because the themes were repeated quite often in each narrative. Still worth the read, this perspective needs to be heard!

SAX's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials Ninth Edition-CD-ROM Version

The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewer, an EPA First Responder, found the Ninth Edition of Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials-CD ROM version (SAX CD) to be a powerful database of easily retrievable, detailed, and pertinent information. The reviewer envisions the target users of the SAX CD deriving the most benefit to be: chemical operators, chemical process engineers, chemists, clinical toxicologists, fire companies, first responders, HAZMAT teams, industrial hygienists, plant managers, physicians, police departments, process safety managers, research professionals, risk management planners, safety engineers, transportation officers, and treatment storage and disposal facility (TSDF) personnel.

The 22,380 materials included are categorized at a minimum according to: Listing Name, Hazard Rating, Chemical Name, Molecular Formula, Molecular Weight, Chemical and Physical Properties, Synonyms, Toxicity Data with References, (instantly accessible by screen "pop-ups"), and Safety Profile.

Where available, NIOSH Recommended Exposure Limits, OSHA Permissible Exposure Levels, ACGIH Threshold Limit Values, (all expressed as Time Weighted Averages) and German MAK exposure limits are included. Consensus Reports (Community RTK, EPA TSCA and Genetic Inventory list) along with DOT hazard Classifications and UN/NA 4-digit identifier (for HM-181), CAS Registry number, and Class (carcinogen, mutagen, teratogen, primary irritant, food additive, etc.) are also included.

For forty years, NST/Engineers, Inc. personnel and associates have found editions of SAX to be an invaluable resource. The Ninth Edition on CD ROM provides the instant retrieval capabilities sought by the electronic communication age. The program includes an intelligent default, twelve-characteristic, search engine. It highlights each "hit" in the text and has a "tracking" system that allows the user to look forward or to "backtrack".

In the NST/Engineers, Inc. trials, SAX CD was used in "mock" HAZMAT spills. The reviewer found that the initial assessments of the spills were conducted many times faster by using the SAX CD. Armed with a laptop computer, as are most police and other emergency responders, the addition of this software will greatly decrease response time and reduce the confusion that routinely surrounds hazardous materials incidents. An increase in facility and public safety will be provided by the fingertip access to the knowledge base in the SAX CD .

The SAX CD works on both PC and Macintosh platforms.

          Book Description

Since its inception in the early 1950's, this book has become the number one resource for those who need to evaluate the hazard of substances used in commerce. Now in its eleventh edition, it contains extensive data on approximately 26,000 substances, including 2000 new entries. The three-volume set now includes Immediately Dangerous Life or Health (IDHL) levels for approximately 1000 chemicals, proving essential for designing adequate ventilation systems and selection of respiratory protection. Other highlights include:
          * A special appendix containing information of nerve gases and biological agents that might appear in the workplace as a result of terrorist activity
          * It is the only reference that combines, for so many substances, data on toxicological, fire, reactivity, explosive potential, and regulatory information
          * Regulatory data covers exposure level classifications for a number of regulatory agencies, from OSHA to the U.S. Department of Transportation
Sax's Dangerous Properties of Industrial Materials, Eleventh Edition provides an essential, up-to-date resource for professionals in industrial hygiene, safety, emergency response, law, and policymaking.

For Matchboxes, very difficult to find and reasearch based on a proprietary numbering system. Numbering system not clearly articulated in overview. I had to purchase a new "Matchbox specific" guide from another publisher.

Savor the sophistication of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Renaissance and Baroque styles with over 75 elegant designs. Inspired by fanciful, organic shapes that were popular during these periods, the motifs are based on designs from America, England, France, Sweden, Norway, Italy, Turkey, and Persia.Well known for her thorough hand quilting, Gwen has had diverse experience as a quilting designer, teacher, and magazine columnist. Working with her many sketches made from museum collections, Gwen has adapted the shapes to be compatible with quiltmaking. The motifs can be hand or machine quilted, embroidered, appliqud, or stenciled. Their asymmetrical shapes make them especially suitable for free-motion machine quilting. Their adaptability allows for adjustmentsthe designs can be enlarged, rearranged, and used in blocks or borders. A bonus Nine-Patch quilt pattern provides a canvas on which to compose a classic arrangement of magnificent designs.

5 out of 5 stars great designs and great information.......2007-05-05

besides the excellent designs, which have been made contemporary without being overly simplified, and are shown as outline embroidery, applique and quilting, there is some first rate information on quilt marking and for adapting the designs to various uses.

there are two simple projects with very complete instructions and photos of three quilts using the designs.

this is an excellent resource volume, but not an instruction book. the author assumes the reader has the knowledge and experience to use the designs in whatever way she wants. beginnning quilters or embroiderers could certainly use the designs in their projects, but should not expect information on basic quilting or embroidery techniques.

A staple if you've not got one for your quliting library. There are several other quality books out there with more design ideas and art samples. If basic tradition is what you desire - here it is.

                            Book Description

Reinventing the Male Homosexual examines the assumption that embracing the biological research on homosexuality is a viable political strategy for the gay rights movement. The biological argument for gay rights is treated as a ãbio-rhetoric,ä a means of incorporating scientific research into public debates.

5 out of 5 stars Read this Book!.......2004-12-18

I encourage every homosexual man to read this book. It's short, well-crafted and probably the best summary of all those theories floating around about the "causes" of homosexuality. The author cleary shows how scientists were influenced by stereotypes in the interpretation of results (or just came up with wrong interpretations or results) or how experiments were poorly executed in the first place. But all the criticism isn't his one, he often just has to quote other scientists. The only thing I think he got wrong was when he criticised Bruce Bawer at the end of the book because he obviously hadn't read Bawer's book very carefully. But since Brookey's book is about something very different than talking about people like Bawer, I wouldn't blame Brookey too much for that one.

So, why is this book so important? Everywhere you can hear of read of old theories, possibly even from the 70s, long debunked but still repeated by some people. Just look at Lise Eliot's 1999 book "What's going on in here?" about the development of unborn children: She carelessly quotes Doerner's 70s experiments with rats (which were very weird to start with) and some other theory about stress leading to the unborn child becoming homosexual - therefore she describes stress as a "risk behaviour", cause the child could get the "sickness" homosexuality! If you know what those experiments and theories were really about or what they became criticised for, you can't take them seriously anymore - and that's very important for homosexual and heterosexual people. And that's why Brookey's book can be so important for your own view of your homosexuality.

By the way, please ignore the two reviewers claiming the book is badly written - it's absolutely not true and I wonder what reasons they had for writing this. It's not written like The Enquirer, of course, since it's a scientifical work, so if that's not your cup of tea, leave it on the shelf.

An excellent companion to Bruce Bawer's "A Place at the Table".

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the time! RUN AWAY.......2003-07-26

If this is a rehashed version of someone's dissertation, two things are in order. First, the publisher should be ashamed for marketing this. Second, Mr. Brookey's advisor should be given a talking to. Brookey bites off far more than he can obviously chew with piece. Theoretical discussion is vague at best, and reflects just a mediocre understanding of the theorists he cites. Save your money.

                            1 out of 5 stars Poorly Written.......2003-03-18

While happy that someone has taken on such an important topic, I was disappointed to find this book so poorly written and so confused in its theoretical grounding. I cannot recommend this book to any serious readers.

                                Book Description

Originally published in Germany in 1997, Herbert A. Strauss In The Eye of The Storm: Growing Up Jewish in Germany, 1918-1943, A Memoir is not merely a memoir, or biography, but rather a description of a life embedded in the history of the Jewish community. It is the story of Jewish life, both pre-Nazi Germany and during Nazi Germany.

Born in 1913 to a Christian mother and a Jewish father, Strauss was raised in a conservative Jewish fashion, studying Hebrew and Jewish history. Like many other Jews, he took little notice as the anti-Semitism of Nazi culture began to seep into his daily life. He remarks of when he was a boy, how amused he was, when during a school genetics lesson, he was selected as the embodiment of a perfect Aryan. But, as Strauss grew older the story changed. Restrictions placed on Jews became more increasingly harsh and he began to feel apprehensive. Yet, while still a student at the Hochshule, a remarkable Jewish school that the Nazis permitted to function until the early months of 1942, Strauss still refused to believe that things could get much worse, and went on concerning himself with his education in the Humanities. However, by late 1942, after he was shut out of the academic world, made a street cleaner, and then forced into hiding, along with his girlfriend (now wife), Lotte, Strauss finally came to the truth of what was happening. A truth he could hardly believe. Both he and Lotte escaped from the Gestapo, with help from the Jewish underground and Frau Meier, a Catholic, who supplied forged documents so that they could enter Switzerland.
