From the cover..........2001-08-01
Lucky Corner tells the remakrable story of Alred E. Snatangelo, who represented New York City's upper east side, including East Harlem. Written by his wife, companion, and confidante and enhanced by many photographs never before published, Lucky Corner opens a window to a vanishing world of first- and second-generation Italian Americans and reveals a picture of a man who became a national champion of Italian-American rights.
[from back cover] "Lucky Corner teaches us that with honesty, hard work, intellectual ability, and strong personal character, immigrant families can not only rise in this country, but can make important contributions to America. Move over, Fiorello La Guardia. Alfred Santangelo has gained his rightful place on Lucky Corner and in American History." - Michael Barone, Co-Author, the Almanac of American Politics

Book Description
THE BEAUTY OF THE BEASTS is a chronicle of many years Ralph Helfer spent as a Hollywood animal behaviorist, and is full of behind–the–scenes accounts of the many television programs and films in which Helfer's animals appeared, including Charlie's Angels and The Ten Commandments, and the stars he and his animals worked with such as Elvis Presley, Clint Eastwood, and Marilyn Monroe. But this is more than a story of the famous, both four and two–legged –– it's also about the important roles animals play in our lives, and how much less human we would be without them.

Book Description
This book is the first book of its kind, concentrating not only on costume jewelry, but also on those pieces that are unmarked or unsigned by the manufacturer. Over 1,000 photographs featuring 3,500 pieces of antique and collectible costume jewelry highlight this beautiful book. Brown carefully illustrates and discusses such details as the types of metal finishes used, the different cuts of stones, and stone setting techniques. Easy to read charts covering time lines, fashion dates, and jewelry introductions are provided for ease in identification of pieces. All photographs are indexed for easier research, and a helpful glossary has been included. 2000 values. AUTHORBIO: Marcia Brown published her first book, Unsigned Beauties of Costume Jewelry, in 2000. She is the host and co-writer of the award-winning Venture Entertainment books-on-tape series Hidden Treasures: A Collector's Guide to Antique Vintage Jewelry. She is a frequent contributor to the Vintage Fashion Costume Jewelry newsletter. An antique and vintage jewelry historian, lecturer, and collector, Brown also provides private consultations for many dealers, mall owners, and collectors. REVIEW: This book truly "sparkles" (like the author's name) and would make an ideal gift for costume jewelry fans. Thousands of jewelry items are illustrated in over 1,000 color photographs and are complemented by captions that include descriptions and values.

Unsigned Beauties of Costume Jewelry.......2007-01-04
An excelent reference book, however, sellers/buyers need to know a particular designer to find items. Not all items are referenced. Sellers/buyers need to do MUCH more research if they are looking for something special.
Review from a buyer in Australia.......2005-09-14
I was looking forward to receiving this book because as a collector I did not have a book on unsigned costume jewellery. However I was disappointed with the copy I received.
My main complaint is the quality of the illustrations. For the most part the photos are dull, too dark and the colours are distorted. Some pages have a definate brownish tint and other pages are quite grey. In comparison to other books on the suject the photos lack colour and clarity but this may be due to the printing and perhaps I received a particularly bad copy.
The book has 3 chapters that give insight into the birth of costume jewelry, the metals, stones, shapes and settings and also how to start a collection, date and restore pieces.
For the price the book covers the subject well.
Unsigned and Unsung beauties of jewelry!.......2005-08-27
Marcia "Sparkles" Brown puts together the best books on costume jewelry there are. With all the pictures she includes it makes it so much easier to find something you may be wondering about and she has a lot to look at! I absolutely love her books!
Basic Knowledge.......2005-07-20
I had read the book before when I started researching my mothers pins. I have now purchsed two of Marcie's books. They are well written, easy to follow, good pictures of pins and great advise.
Excellent Resource for Vintage Jewelry Buffs.......2004-11-18
I love this book!. It's chock full of excellent pictures and information for the vintage jewelry collector, whether a novice or one of long-standing. The book is well organized in its layout. I've discovered it's a 'collectible' book in its own right. Author, Marcia Sparkles Brown, has a video, which I also own and recommend.
Although not a whole lot on each designer, some mention is better than none. To find references to Judy Lee, BSK, LaRoco, Park Lane, Avon, Capri, Art, JJ, Les Bernard, Capri, etc. was of interest to me when I first started collecting jewelry because of the scarcity of volumes on these names. Other designers, such as Lisner, Coventry, Napier, Monet, etc., also included in this book, were more easily found when doing searches for designers.
The book has no index, so this may be a concern to others. But the designer names are presented in alphabetical order.

terrific.......1999-05-18
It is easy to understand & follow. I have made like the big bear it turned out lovely. I really enjoy doing plastic canvas crafts. I some times add little things to the lovely patterns. It sets them off.
Fantastic........1998-05-02
The book is filled with lots of ideas. I have made seven items from it already (as gifts of course)and they are very well received. Plastic canvasing is my new addiction!
this book is loaded with ideas for everyone you know........1998-01-15
I found this book to a definite value for the money spent. It has patterns for even the hardest person to make for. The patterns were differant, and beautiful. It was well made and packed with content. I wish I had all the series to go with this one. Other books I enjoyed to go with this one was Looney tunes in plastic canvas book 7.

After 4 years of searching..........2002-10-29
I found it by accident in my local library about 4 years ago, and have been searching for my own copy ever since; it is, unlike so many books these days, well worth RE-reading on a yearly basis.
Being an avid gardening fan, and also a huge lover of those large, rambling properties that have been unkept and unloved for numerous years, watching this gentleman conquer the same was at times extremely amusing, fairly informative, and always interesting.
Also of note for those who like to compare cultures; the British point of view is definitely different from the American, and the historical perspectives that can be occasionally drawn from Mr Courtauld's lively prose are also worth thinking about, if not always pleasing to the ultra-sensitive PC American mind... :)
Strongly recommended for those who like gardening, reading about gardening, and occasionally reading about gardening without worrying too much about all the technicalities!
Product Description
Parenting: An Ecological Perspective was originally created in 1993 to answer questions such as: Why do parents differ markedly in the ways in which they care for their children? What factors contribute to individual differences in parenting behavior? The framework used for addressing these questions is the ecological perspective developed by Urie Bronfenbrenner, who recognized that children's development is influenced by the interactions that they have over time with the people, objects, and symbols in their immediate environment. Luster and Okagaki have updated the original text focusing on parental behavior and also included 6 new chapters covering topics such as: *Fathers/gender of parent; *Children with special needs; *Ethnicity and socioeconomic status; and *Parent education. The text summarizes the latest research on factors that influence parenting, with each chapter providing a look at one important influence and the linkages among these various factors. An ecological perspective draws attention to the fact that the lives of parents and children are intertwined, and that understanding factors that influence parents is important for understanding the experiences of children.

That's Alright, Elvis recounts the life of Scotty Moore, one of the early men behind the legendary Elvis Presley. Moore was already an accomplished musician (Rolling Stone Keith Richards says that Moore's music inspired him to play rock-and-roll) when, at the behest of Sun Records executive Sam Phillips, he took young Presley under his wing. It didn't take long for Moore's seasoned ear to discern the young singer's talent, one that would soon explode into the rock sound. Moore's relationship with Elvis deepened through the years as he managed Presley's career and played in his band, the Blue Moon Boys. But as Elvis's popularity skyrocketed, Moore's managerial role was usurped, and the professional relationship between the two ultimately soured over money and miscommunication. Moore continued his musical career and is now considered the quintessential rock guitarist by many in the industry. He maintains an admirable objectivity about his life with Elvis as he tells his story through writer James Dickerson. That's Alright, Elvis is a fresh take on a seminal period in both Elvis's life and in the history of rock-and-roll.
Book Description
Category: Rock music/ Biography/ ElvisThe untold story of Elvis first guitarist and manager, Scotty Moore. For the first time, guitarist Scotty Moore tells the real story behind his years with Elvis Presley. When Elvis first showed up at Sam Phillip's Memphis-based Sun Records studio, he was a shy teenager in search of a sound. Sam asked Scotty and bass player Bill Black, both members of the popular country band The Tune Wranglers, to work with Elvis on his music in advance of his first recording session. While clowning around in the studio they came up with a version "That's Alright"; it was released as Elvis' first single, and launched his career. Scotty and Bill toured with the young singer, and played on all of his Sun sessions and his first recordings for RCA; Scotty served as the business manager for the trio, in essence working as Elvis' first manager. When the trio broke up, Scotty retired from music-making. He has maintained his silence about Elvis since, despite repeated requests for interviews to tell his side of the story. With Bill Black and Elvis both dead, he is the only remaining member of the original trio who can tell the true story of how Elvis transformed popular music---and how he created the guitar sound that has become the prototype for all rock guitar that followed.Jim Dickerson is the author of Schirmers Goin Back to Memphis. He is a Nashville-based journalist and writer.
Customer Reviews:
A legend gets screwed.......2007-06-18
This is a great, but sad book. Scotty Moore was an innovator in early rock and roll music, and a substantial contributor to the success of Elvis Presley's music. It is true that Elvis had the voice, looks, sex appeal and all that stuff to make the young girls swoon. However, it was Scotty that met with Elvis, arranged the first recording sessions, and helped form the type of music that became rock and roll. Without him, Elvis would probably have ended up a gospel singer.
As this book points out, Elvis backed out of the verbal deal between he and his band regarding the split of record royalties. He put the guys on a small weekly salary that actually led to Scotty going into debt for the privilege of playing behind Elvis.
I think anyone who enjoys early rock music should be able to enjoy this book. While the story of Scotty is told well, it never gives one the impression that he is looking for pity.
Required reading even if you're not an Elvis fan.......2004-02-13
Although not a technical genius, or a flambouyant showman, Scotty Moore is the first Rock and Roll guitar hero. He can be considered a discoverer, an inventor. He provided support, on and off stage, to a musical phenomenon, Elvis Presley. They both found a way of making three instruments and a vocal sound big. His riffs and syncopations inspired millions. Too bad he didn't make...millions.
His story is told in a warmly engaging way, filled with panorama; and not once does a bitter tone prevail.
As Elvis progressed, it seems that he (along with the powers that be) decided that Scotty's licks were not sophisticated enough, so Moore apparently was an occasional studio player after 1961. It's interesting that Big El summoned Scotty for his crucial TV Special - the word "Comeback" came shortly after December 3rd, 1968.
It's facinating to read about Mr. Bill Black, Elvis' first bassist. Black was another instinctual musician, limited but perfectly attuned to the new art form. He died a young man, but found a way onto the charts with the Bill Black Combo and strong instrumental workouts. He died in 1965 and it's too bad that Elvis did not mention his name on the TV Special section where he demonstrated how they got the big sound with just three guys.
I do not enjoy the storytelling in the second person: it would have been much more effective to have Scotty's words up-front throughout. Just like his guitar playing.
Excellent biography.......2003-10-15
James Dickerson did a great job of telling the story of Scotty Moore. I was as impressed with the writing as with the subject. I read this as research for the biography I'm writing about Faron Young, and I must admit to disappointment--but not surprise--at the lack of mention of him. That aside, this is a book worth reading. Scotty Moore is a man I'd like to meet.
Excellent, simple tale of a world-class musician and Elvis.......1999-02-10
Scotty Moore is one of the unsung heroes of rock 'n roll and his writing style reflects his playing style- simple, precise and to the point. In a humble, matter-of-fact style, guitarist Moore recounts his experiences with the King in an eminently readable and interesting way. I have read many Elvis books and this is one of my favorites. After reading it, you just wished you could bump into Scotty sometime, buy him a beer and talk the night away.

Not at all what I had expected.......2007-02-02
Obviously this is an important book. All literature about the Holocaust is important, and especially when the book in question is written by survivor. And a survivor is just what Leon Weliczker Wells is. Unfortunately the rest of his family perished in the Nazi death camps, something that quite understandably traumatized him badly.
But not only has he been forced to live out the remaining days of his life grieving the horrible loss of his family. As a result of his experiences his relationship to God, as well as his identity as a faithful Jew, changed dramatically. And that's something I've thought about from time to time: how did these people - all these faithful Jews - look at God after such an unspeakable event as the Holocaust had taken place? How could anyone remain a believer afterwards? Surely they all must have given up their faith?
Yes, some indeed did just that. But others grew stronger in their faith, unbelievable as it might sound. But no matter what the outcome was, no one came out of the ordeal untouched. Especially not Wells, who has written several other books about his life besides Shattered Faith. I haven't read any of them, though, because according to the information I found beforehand, Shattered Faith focuses on how Wells started questioning his beliefs.
And yeah, I guess that's true. At least to a certain extent. But far from as much as I had hoped. In fact, the book was mostly a huge disappointment, because the majority of the text is made up of extremely detailed descriptions of the religious everyday life for young Wells and the rest of the Jews where he lived before the Nazis took over. Of a total of 151 pages - the glossary, notes, bibliography et cetera exempted - no less than the initial 90 are filled with these descriptions of the Jewish religion and how it affected Well's entire existence. Before the takeover. And I'm pretty sure I could have learned about that in countless other books.
Then when the Nazis eventually arrive the endless descriptions continue, at least from time to time, and still they're detailed to such an extent that I doubt few besides students of religion or adherents to the Jewish faith will find them very interesting. True, there are good moments, for example when Wells discusses how the Holocaust changed his and other Jews' beliefs, or how parallels may be drawn between the Nazi ideas of a master race or supreme people and the Jewish notion of being the people "chosen" by God, but these moments are few and far between. So while I don't doubt that this book is important in many ways, to me it was still nothing but a disappointment.
A very important work.......2000-04-14
This is an essential memoir for those interested in the ways Holocaust survivors contend with faith and overwhelming loss. As always, Wells' writing is lucid, candid, and hugely informative. Even for those who have read a lot by survivors, this book will add a perspective that most will not have encountered before: looking back, with pain but not sentimentality, on the definitive end of a world. This is a vitally important book.
this book has to be read now.......1997-12-10
Reviiewing the latest "swiss gold scandal" this book is a must. To the best of my knowledge the content of this book is true, I am saying this as a survivor of shoa. I am very much indebted to the author Mr. Wells who dared to lift the smoke screen of some incredible decisions and deads which caused many of us to die. It is unfortunate that the Germanand the Swiss public is not able to read this book as there are no German copies anymore in the market
