    Book Description

On February 11, 1889, as all Tokyo prepared to celebrate the promulgation of the Meiji Constitution, an assassin's blade brought to an end the life of Mori Arinori, Japanese minister of education. Mori had been a symbol to Japanese and Westerners alike of his country's rapid, yet often painful, strides toward modernization. He was a maverick among the modernizing leaders of Meiji Japan as evidenced by even a few of his many pioneering accomplishments: as first diplomatic envoy to America, as founder of Japan's first modern philosophical society and her first comercial college, as the first to marry in the Western fashion, and as the first education minister under the new cabinet system.

      Book Description

Mori Arinori's Life and Resources in America sheds much light on the shape of an American society, government, and economy recovering from the Civil War. This book--originally published in English in Washington, D.C., in 1871--was written by Japan's first diplomatic representative in the United States. Historian John E. Van Sant has edited, annotated, and introduced this uniquely illuminating text, making it readily accessible to the contemporary audience it deserves.

                      Amazon.com Review

"The single most important discovery for women explorers may be the freedom that lies at the very act of exploration." It is fitting that the daughter of Anne Morrow Lindbergh pens the introduction to a collection that pays tribute to women adventurers from the 18th to the 21st centuries. In her foreword, Reeve Lindbergh reveals the intrinsic yearnings that unite the early female adventurers with their contemporary counterparts: the thrill of breaking new ground and the relief inherent in escaping restrictive societal boundaries.

Liberated from the dusty shelves of the National Geographic Society and bound in a slim, portable volume, these 16 snapshots profile daring women from past and present, pairing them according to their wayward desires ("The Call of the Arctic," "Down River," "Where the Air Is Thin"). Helen Thayer's solo trek to the North Pole in 1988 is particularly powerful: "The feel of the wind lashing my body and face without mercy, and a savage hunger and thirst combined to make me dig into a reservoir of strength.... I dug so deep that I came up with reserves I never knew I had."

In some cases, the accounts of the early pioneers are lacking in detail and correspondingly lack the punch of their contemporary counterparts, yet some, like the piece on Louise Arner Boyd, serve to highlight the freedom so treasured by brave independent adventurers:

Far north ... are lands that hold one spellbound. Gigantic imaginary gates with hinges set in the horizon seem to guard these lands. Slowly the gates swing open, and one enters another world where men are insignificant amid the awesome immensity of lonely mountains, fjords, and glaciers.

The adventure connoisseur may be frustrated by the brevity of some portraits as well as the brusqueness with which both tragedy and victory are conveyed. Ultimately, however, Living with Cannibals succeeds in fulfilling a greater purpose--to prop open the door for further explorations into the hearts of the world's most overlooked pioneers. --Daphne Durham

                      Book Description

The spirit of adventure sweeps through the chapters of this exciting volume as we encounter the inspiring, sometimes tragic, often humorous tales of adventurous women -- from the 18th century to the 21st century.

Selected from National Geographic's rich archives, this colorful group portrait pairs female adventurers of the past with their contemporary counterparts -- in a "then and now" approach.

You'll meet Arctic explorers -- an American heiress who crisscrossed ice fields seven decades ago, along with a celebrated New Zealander who skied alone to both North and South Poles in the 1990s. You'll also join in the atmospheric exploits of Shannon Lucid and Amelia Earhart as they take off on those daring flights that wrote a new pages in the annals of aviation.

Tour the world with women who defied Victorian convention to venture alone among the headhunters of Borneo or to see first hand the hidden corners of Africa, India, and Japan. Witness world record-breaking moments by such latterday legends as Sylvia Earle, whose explorations of the ocean floor earned her the nickname, "Her Royal Deepness," and Catherine Destivelle, the beautiful French superstar of modern mountaineering.

Featuring photographs, art, and period illustrations, as well as an introduction by Reeve Lindbergh and a 1,500-year time line of women's adventuring, Living With Cannibals offers vivid testimony to the wanderlust, daring, and determination of these intrepid journeyers.

Whether kayaking remote Tibetan rivers or bottle-feeding baby orangutans, bicycling to India or battling icebergs off the coast of Greenland, each woman profiled here demonstrates her unswerving devotion to a dream.

4 out of 5 stars Good overview of adventurous women -- past and present.......2006-06-19

This is a pretty quick read and very enjoyable. What I liked so much about this book is that while all these women have one thing in common -- adventure -- they all have their very own and very different approaches to it. From a single mom who takes her daughter through a foreign country, to women kayakers, to mountain climbers. All these women have found the one or two things they really loved (one lady loved India and also loved riding her bike so she rode her bike through India) and pursued it.

Basically this book teaches you to find your thing, be proud of what it is you like to do as an individual - and go for it.

This book is a collection of short true stories of women travelers and adventurers. (Some are modern and some are from previous centuries.) Many threw convention to the side to follow their dreams. I enjoyed it!

5 out of 5 stars It's Easy to Identify with the Adventurers.......2001-08-24

The picture on the cover and the title made me think that this was going to be "A short superficial collection of stories about women adventurers," and probably adventures that wouldn't be worth mentioning were the people male. I was pleasantly surprised. Common themes are, "Ms. X from a very early age indicated that she wanted to travel" and "After living a conventional, homemaker life, at age 30+ Ms. X started traveling." The stories are written so that that one can readily identify with the adventurers, perhaps precisely because up until the time they start traveling their lives are so similar to people like me who are not. Like a prior reviewer, once I started the book I was hooked.

Pairing well known adventuresses with lesser known heroines makes this book a great read for those with various levels of familiarity with the history of women explorers. Delightful anecdotes are coupled with high adventure which kept me saying, "I will just read one more story..." until I found myself half way through the book in one sitting. This is a great book to read to your daughter.

Dont buy the 2007 edition. You think you might use this book, but almost every statute you'll need to know is DIFFERENT than it reads. Just go to class, take your notes, and learn the interpretations of the statutes that your professor wants you to learn. Most of the time he'll tell you to flip to read a statute and tell you what it really means on the fly. Thats all you need boys and girls. If you read this book for fun or homework without classroom instruction you seriously might have eaten paint chips as a kid.

                            4 out of 5 stars A helpful guide.......2005-08-27

I find it difficult to rate any one book on glassware since as any glass collector knows, one would literally have to have an entire library dedicated to antique glass only.As far as this book goes I found it to have a good bit of information on many areas of Fenton glass, some of which I was seeking and some I was not aware of. Overall,it is a good general guide, but as I said previously one would need a roomful of books to cover not only glass in general but indeed an entire section of said library would have to be just for Fenton glass. That being said I can recommend this book for beginners and casual collectors, as for the serious and professional types I think a collection of Fenton books should accompany your collection of Fenton glass.

                            5 out of 5 stars A must-have for the Fenton collector . . . .......2005-01-28

As an avid Fenton Art Glass collector, I eagerly devour any new material written about my favorite glassware. In this tome, Mark Moran has summoned his considerable journalistic and antiquarian talents to produce a reference book celebrating Fenton's 100th anniversary of art glass production. The well-written and succinct text introduces each section of a chronological photographic tour of representative pieces from 1905 through the present. Mr. Moran has ransacked collectors' display shelves and closets to find numerous beautiful and rare pieces of Fenton that I have not seen previously documented. Also included is a price guide listing some 2000 items.

Seasoned and novice collectors alike should find this book a welcome addition to their libraries.

Authentic ancient motifs - from natural animals to mythological and imperial figures - are the basis for the charted designs in Enchanted Knitting. Here you'll find patterns based on the ancient Romanian beast-man Silvanus, figures in the Paleolithic caves of Europe, and tattoos from the famous Pazyryk women of central Asia. Chinese, Mexican, Nigerian, and Native American cultures are among the many other sources for these diverse motifs.

An exhibit cataloge of spectacular black and white photographs featuring traditional Chinese houses in a few geographically diverse locations. The text is good for a general introduction to the subject, but provides just a few new insights to those familiar with the scholarly literature.

I am 13 years old and I love Southern Gospel Music. From the first time I read this book I had a new look at their songs. Where they came from, why they were written. Some stories will make you think, some will make you cry, and some will but a smile on your face. I love this book, and i would highly reccemend it to everyone.

                                                      Book Description

Of all the western frontier figures who played a role in the lives of the Sioux, perhaps none was more intriguing, eccentric, or controversial than Father Francis M. Craft (1852–1920). Both fearless and compassionate, Father Craft ministered to the Sioux for two decades during the turbulent years after Sitting Bull surrendered at Fort Buford in 1881. After recovering from a severe injury at Wounded Knee in 1890, he struggled to found an Indian order of nuns and railed against government policies that, he contended, encouraged the corruption and degradation of Indians.

Thomas W. Foley's well-researched and balanced account of Father Craft's fascinating life examines his key role in Sioux and missionary history, his dedication to Indian causes, and his lifelong struggle against stereotypes and prejudice, which challenged many in the church and the federal government and led to accusations of insanity from his powerful critics.
