This was a fabulous biography of Margaret Chase Smith. Sherman does a great job of relating her themes to the narrative. Connections are emphasized regarding major points. This book is very readable as well as informative.
Competent and worth reading.......2000-09-18
I confess to a weakness for biographies of U. S. senators. I seldom see one I don't want to read, and when I saw this one I knew I would have to read it. Smith actually had an amazing career (elected to the House of Representatives in 1940 and to the Senate in 1948, reelected in 1954, 1960, 1966, and defeated for reelection in 1972) and this unpretentious book, solidly but not exhaustively researched, recounts it well. It is quite laudatory, but will be critical when it is clear criticism is warranted. Mrs. Smith was not a great brain but she was a great working politician, ably assisted by her AA.
Book Description
An eye-opening account of the first encounter between England and Japan, by the acclaimed author of Nathaniel's Nutmeg
In 1611, the merchants of London's East India Company received a mysterious letter from Japan, written several years previously by a marooned English mariner named William Adams. Foreigners had been denied access to Japan for centuries, yet Adams had been living in this unknown land for years. He had risen to the highest levels in the ruling shogun's court, taken a Japanese name, and was now offering his services as adviser and interpreter.
Seven adventurers were sent to Japan with orders to find and befriend Adams, in the belief that he held the key to exploiting the opulent riches of this forbidden land. Their arrival was to prove a momentous event in the history of Japan and the shogun suddenly found himself facing a stark choice: to expel the foreigners and continue with his policy of isolation, or to open his country to the world. For more than a decade the English, helped by Adams, were to attempt trade with the shogun, but confounded by a culture so different from their own, and hounded by scheming Jesuit monks and fearsome Dutch assassins, they found themselves in a desperate battle for their lives.
Samurai William is the fascinating story of a clash of two cultures, and of the enormous impact one Westerner had on the opening of the East.
Download Description
The true story behind James Clavell's best-selling Shogun, Samurai William is the incredible tale of a man who tried to bridge two very different cultures during one of the earliest and most fascinating encounters between the East and West. Giles Milton has written a colorful, engaging, and eye-opening account of the enormous impact one Westerner had on the opening of the East.

one of the best books on Japanese/European history.......2007-09-26
I'm moving to Japan in a few months and one of my buddies suggested I read the book before I go. It's very entertaining and gives you the mindset behind what makes the Japanese tick-truly amazing culture.
I'm happy to have this book in my shelf.......2007-06-06
In my case, I learned about William Adams watching the PBS Empire Series which I recommend as a complement of this delightful book. What a story, supposedly bound to the East Indies as part of a Dutch Enterprise, Williams Adams is one of the few to reach Japan after a long and difficult voyage. From there comes an exquisite recount of Adams stay in feudal Japan of the 1600 which include a view of their customs and cities and the efforts made by other English Men to establish a trade spot in the Land of the Rising Sun. Is impressive how Williams Adams became a personal advisor of the Shogun Ieyasu and how he became part of this culture that remember him even after 200 years of his death. This book was also an excellent portrait of the Portuguese and Dutch East Indies Company of the time, the expulsion of Jesuits and eradication of Catholicism from Japan, and also provide some interesting information about the natives of Africa's Guinea Ecuatorial and of course, the South of Chile (passing the Magellan Strait).
You can see a letter sent by Adams in 1613 in the British library site. Enjoy!!!
Move over, Richard Chamberlain.......2007-05-17
Everyone is familiar with "Shogun"; if not the book, then surely the lengthy TV mini-series. But the real story of the English pilot, William Adams is far more interesting. This is a wonderful book that encapsulate an era of exploration, the first halting attempts of economic empire-building, and the dawn of the Shogunate. And while Adams' personal story is not quite as dramatic as James Clavell's pilot, it is certainly more interesting and entertaining. Especially remarkable was to watch the speed of navigational developement and international operations over a period of a mere thirty years. One forgets at times that Jamestown and Plymouth were established within a few years after Adams' arrival in Japan, and by the time of his death, the Eastern Seaboard was almost entirely settled. A wonderful view of a time less well understood and frequently miscaracterized.
absorbing.......2007-05-06
Did you know that James Clavell's "Shogun" was based on the story of an actual Westerner who had gone native in Japan in the early 1600's? I sure didn't.
I thought Clavell was just spinning tales out of whole cloth. No, no; there really was a marooned Englishman there named William Adams, although as we learn from Milton's book, he wasn't quite as mixed up in high politics as was John Blackthorne.
Milton relates Adams's intriguing story in the straightforward style of popular history. It is not written in the form of fiction; Milton here is writing for a large non-scholarly audience. There are no footnotes: Any references or Japanese terms the general reader probably can't handle are explained in the running text.
In addition to an index, the book features several maps and black-and-white woodcut-type illustrations throughout the text.
Interesting, but uneven.......2007-04-16
"Samurai William" is not exactly a biography of William Adams. There is simply not enough evidence in English sources to know much about the most interesting part of his life: his reasons for remaining in Japan, his observations of Japanese life, his years spent as master of the lands granted him by the shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu. It's easy to understand why the record of his life in Japan, which appears to be mostly a record of his travels, his contacts with his English compatriots, and his relationship with Ieyasu, irresistably lent itself to fiction. Nor is the book exactly about the opening of 17th century Japan, as the subtitle suggests, since the Portugese and the Dutch preceded the English. About half way through, the book becomes the story of the fitful process of establishing an utlimately unsuccessful English trading presence in Japan. Milton's accounts of the constant brawling, drinking, [...], and general bad behavior on the part of the English makes it rather easy to see why Japan entered the period of "sakoku," when it was closed to foreigners. These accounts also slows down the narrative considerably, since they all look pretty much the same. What the book does provide is an "opening" into a very interesting period in Japanese history. There is a good "Notes and Sources" section at the end of the book.

Excellent Reference.......2002-06-05
Being a personal friend of Shawn Peterson would probably leave you with the notion that I have a biased opinion. Having known him for a number of years and knowing his passion for collecting PEZ, I assure you that a significant amount of time, effort, and research went into this book. In reading a couple of, what I feel are unwarranted, negative reviews of this book I'd wholeheartedly disagree with their assessment. This is an outstanding book of reference with excellent photography and informative narrative. I recommend it to anyone in the hobby, or anyone simply wanting to reflect back to their childhood and reminiscing about a much simpler time in life. He's done an outstanding job in assembling an historic perspective of the company, rare and unusual dispensers, as well as common variety and new offerings. Buy with confidence and enjoy!

A MUST HAVE!.......2001-11-08
I bought this book from the author himself at a convention. Not only is he a very nive guy but the book is the best pez book I have ever bought. Has photos for the Ultra-Rare to the common dispenser. Shows numerous variations and includes photos from many collections. I saw some photos of dispensers that I have never heard of in my 6 years+ of collecting/selling. A must have for any collector. If you are a beginner or an expert collector this is a MUST have.
TERRIBLE!.......2001-11-05
This was a BIG letdown. Not what I expected. If you have other PEZ books just use those. My birdcage got better use out of this book.

Awesome, Usable, Filled with Information.......2005-10-26
Shawn Peterson's Collector's Guide to Pez is filled with useful information on prices and availability of almost every Pez dispenser ever made. Along with wonderful, colorful photos and great details, Peterson has included great information for both beginning and advanced collectors of Pez products. His information on convention, collectors groups, and bargain hunting are particularly useful as a resource. In a hobby as fun and varied as Pez collectiong is, a great tool is needed. Peterson's text is the Bible for lovers of Pez both young and old. This is the only book you need whether you are a new collector or an old pro. It is definetly worth the money and will be a great addition to your growing Pez collection.
An Essential Guide For Any Pez Collector.......2004-07-06
Many people like myself collect Pez dispensers. It is a wonderful hobby to have because it is virtually impossible to find every variation of every dispenser there is. Sometimes there are many different variations of a single dispenser, for example the colors that were made. This is where this guide comes in handy. In here you will find colorful pictures of almost every known dispenser made, along with pictures of some different variations. This helps you know what you are looking for when you want a certain dispenser. Listed also are estimated values of the dispensers, which is also helpful in giving you an idea of what that certain dispenser will cost you normally. Also pictured in this book are different inserts from the packages, different displays that were available, different flavor packs that have been packaged with the dispensers and even Pez with unique or foreign packaging. This is a great book for collectors and even those who are a little interested in Pez dispensers. The pictures and information make it easier to know what you are looking for, so if you are looking to collect Pez I recommend this guide as it will be a big help to you.
The Best of What's Out There.......2003-06-10
Although it's not a highly competitive category, this book takes the top spot in Pez guides.
Being the newest, it has the most up to date pictures, prices and products.
The extended section on candy packs, and Pez paper products/inserts is helpful, as other books lacked in that departement.
Overall it's a solid price and picture book, with accurate estimates and such. It's the best of what's out there, so it's worth a shot.
Book Description
“A remarkably creative and inspiring book for beginning printmakers and crafters....Beyond the usual sections on materials, tools, and techniques, it offers one and two page vignettes on Gauguin, Munch, 19th-century Japanese woodcuts, etc....explores eraser prints, carving linoleum blocks, woodcuts, and making printing blocks out of polymer clay.”—Library Journal.
Customer Reviews:
Great Starter Book on Printmaking.......2007-10-11
Although the book indicates developing prints from other media than wood blocks, those are very few. Yet the guide to using wood to produce amazing print blocks, with imagery from those made in the past, encourages an artist to use this media. The beautiful projects, tools needed, step-by-step instructions gave the book a 5-star ranking. There is even a project that shows the steps in simple book-making. You won't be disappointed in this book on printmaking/stamping, particularly in the modern frenzy in multi-media artwork.
Get your feet wet!.......2003-10-09
Never took a printmaking class in college...I've been carving erasers and wondering about this new world of relief printing. This book is wonderful.
Not too much information on complicated techniques. Enough info to have me working on new ideas. If you're beyond the commercial rubber stamps and/or are an artist hoping to incorporate printed images into
multimedia work...buy this book! Great reference! It'll fill in the blanks for those who have an art education but no basic printmaking.
Simple prints, excellent results.......2001-05-14
This book is aimed at relief printmaking without a press using a range of techniques from linocuts through to using found objects. The techniques are clearly described and are applied to a number of simple but attractive projects such as single pamphlet books. pillows or cards. The photographs are clear and helpful. I particularly liked the fact that Gwen Diehn went through the clean up process, which is often not covered in much detail, and that she used vegetable oil rather than the more noxious kerosene. Throughout the book are a number of inspiring examples by past and present printmakers which help to extend the processes described. Whilst this book is aimed primarily at beginners, it offers stimulus and information of use to the more experienced printmakers too.

I Liked It!.......2000-09-30
I disagree with Cyndi about this book of plans... I believe MOST people will like a lot of the houses in it! I'm in the business, and have found that almost everybody I've shown it to has found 5 good homes in it. I think it has great plans in it for certain people, and everyone should give it a shot!
Total waste of time.......2000-07-10
If you are looking to build a so-called farm house in suburbia, this is for you. If you are looking for ideas to build in a true rural area, and want to design with a sense of historic value, this book is not for you.
Better than Most!.......2000-05-29
I was surprisingly impressed with this catalog of home plans---for once, you can see details on room sizes and dimensions! --I would recommend this to anyone interested in building a country home, but not sure what they want or like! Lots of ideas!

Customer Reviews:
This book is a must buy! Very real and vulnerable!.......2004-07-13
This book helped me understand my grand-daughter. The author opens up her life to the readers. She describes her mistakes, frustrations, good ideas and not so good ones. As you read you feel as though you are in the room with them. The words and descriptions are powerful and raw. Just when you don't think you can take another bad moment, the author offers up some humor. I loved the book, I couldn't put it down. It offers a different perspective from the usual medically based text. I highly recommend this book!
You feel as if you're there.......2004-06-08
In this book, the author holds nothing back. You feel as if you are there with her, enduring sleepless nights and anxious days. When she throws in a little humor, you want to laugh in frustration through the tears with her. For anyone who has suffered this disease, has a child, relative, or friend suffering, I highly recommend this book. You understand her frustration, you understand her fiance's side, and you want to understand the poor child enduring the mental illness. Unlike most other books on this subject, she's not afraid of admitting she is afraid. She also offers some valuable resources to people suffering from mental illness. The book offers no answers (as none can be found anywhere), but a shoulder to lean on by knowing you are not the only one who is caught up in a whirlwind of a life.

Book Description
"Can I now, a white-haired man who gets into the movies at reduced cost, Do I have any magic words left? Can I get a miracle? If I can recall my youth and understand it, that may be the miracle I seek now."
When David Hays was 66 and had joined a synagogue for the first time in over fifty years, he decided to study Hebrew and be a bar mitzvah. And so this world-renowned theatrical designer, founder of the legendary National Theatre of the Deaf, father of two grown children and coauthor of the best-selling My Old Man and the Sea, borrowed his grandson's beginner's Hebrew workbook and joined a class of twelve-year-olds. It launched a wondrous journey of faith and community.
In Today I Am a Boy, Hays's new world begins to intersect with his own history: on Yom Kippur, Hays, who has sailed around Cape Horn with his son, reads the story of Jonah to the congregation and gives a sermon on the Old Testament and the sea. His long-dormant love of learning is wholly rekindled. At the stage of life when most of us begin to slow down, Hays feels more alive than ever, rejuvenated by newfound connections to his youth and faith.
His recently deceased mother, his grand-children and children all play roles in this funny and ultimately moving narrative. In the world of these pages, the generations do not simply pass from one to another; they intertwine, learning from one another. The ardent boy in this eminent man has been reawakened, and in his words, "I now understand that everything that I've done in my life that has been fine has been done in the spirit of that boy."
Today I Am a Boy is a brave, clear-eyed and joyous examination of life.
Customer Reviews:
Should've stuck to the topic, IMO.......2001-04-12
The topic of this book as stated is highly misleading. Yes, Mr. Hays traces some of his experiences on becoming a Bar Mitzvah at age 66. However, he digresses so much from this theme that it was downright annoying!
I was really looking forward to reading about a 66-year-old man's journey into spirituality and rediscovery of Judaism, rather than a name-dropping autobiography.
What little Mr. Hays did write about his spiritual journey back into Judaism was sparse, and even his way off-topic autobiographical sections didn't include much of his family's, friends',or peers' reactions to his becoming a Bar Mitzvah, which to me would have been very interesting.
He also didn't talk much at all about contemporary Jewish renewal and problems of assimilation and how others might, as he did, find meaning in a religious path they've ignored or rejected.
Why, instead, should I care that he went back for a school reunion and one of his class members won the Nobel Prize? Why should I have to wade through the life stories of some of his uninteresting relatives who are not even marginally part of his spiritual story?
In this catch-all manuscript, Mr. Hays also tangentially subjects the reader to an entire fantasy theatrical piece he has imagined about a grown-up Anne Frank (for which I wouldn't buy a ticket, BTW).
What we also get is too much information and commentary about the 12- and 13-year-olds in his class, including an inappropriate (IMO) dwelling on one of the pubescent girls about whom Mr. Hays admitted over and over he had major sexual fantasies.
Great story of a great journey.......2001-01-02
This is one of those books that you could borrow from your library, or from a friend, but you will likely need to buy your own copy since there are so many passages that are either so wise, so funny, or so meaningfully touching that you will need to use your pencil in order to happily jot checkmarks, brackets, and asterisks throughout the book. I know that I did.
David Hays has a surfeit of academic, personal, and professional accomplishments. In his sixties, he was semi-retired, kids grown, had good health and a happy family life. His mind is unquestioningly fertile (yet organized) and he seems to embrace new experiences. As a child he gazed into a mud bubble, and glimpsed eternity. As an adult he throws himself into the grass in his back yard, in order to look more closely at the earth. His life was full, and meaningful, but he does not brag, and he is likable from the outset.
Rather than rest on his not inconsiderable laurels, he decides to become a Bar Mitzvah, joining a class of local eleven and twelve-year olds - in order to devote himself to study with his congregation's rabbi, Doug, for more than a year. It is this journey - and there is a steady unfolding, with no outburst of religiosity - that forms the starting point for this wonderful narrative.
Hays has an ability to tell you a lot about himself by telling you about other people. He respects himself, and he respects others. He is never boring. His parents, in-laws, grown children, grandchildren, his wide circle of friends and acquaintances, and his classmates are interesting to him, and worthy of reportage. He lets you in on these people and their lives and their histories with unstinting (and never maudlin) respect, even awe. In doing this you find out a lot about Hays and his subjects. Their privacy is never violated, and their dignity is sustained.
There is uncloying, laugh-out-loud humor throughout. Family lore emerges, and it is often funny. Hays delights in his wife Leonora's knack of elegantly summing up a situation with a trenchant malapropism. Of his new-found fervor for religious study, she says, "He hooked, line and sinker!" Of the Bahamas: "It's a third-war country." He also shares his family history, including a terrific (true) story, "How my family saved Israel." His feelings and observations as a sensitive member of his class (of the kids at recess he marvels, "They always know where to go.") - and his relationship with his wonderful rabbi - are a pleasure to watch unfold.
Hays includes a piece on Anne Frank that is dramatic, thoughtful, and not at all funny. It is appropriately included, given that the concerns of an adult approaching his bar mitzvah are different from those of a child. And at one point, he attends a Harvard reunion - which maybe could have been left out of this book, with no loss of substance to this great story.
In all, a wonderful book.
