Relatively Unknown Figure.......2006-07-20

Sir Martin Frobisher (1535-1594) was both a pirate and a Vice Admiral in the Royal Navy. The dichotomy of those two positions works as a good introduction to a man who spent much of his career searching for the fabled Northwest Passage, but also, in 1588, had a significant role in thwarting the Spanish Armada (which earned him a knighthood). Yet, Frobisher never achieved the historical status of his contemporaries Sir Francis Drake or Sir Walter Raleigh. In fact, the only reminders of Frobisher's existence are Frobisher Bay in Canada and a plaque at St. Giles Cripplegate in London.

The author, James McDermott, traces Frobisher's life from his boyhood in Yorkshire to expeditions in Africa, North America, and the Caribbean. It was Frobisher's three unsuccessful voyages in search of a northwest passage to Asia, which caused him to turn to piracy against the Spanish Empire in the Caribbean. The respectability of his later undertakings for Queen Elizabeth do not overwhelm his unsavory early activities or his personal ruthlessness.

McDermott, an independent scholar and a leading authority on both Martin Frobisher and the Northwest Passage, spent almost 30 years researching his topic. The end result is the life story of an unlikable individual, who climbed the social latter despite the cost to others around him. The author based his story on all of the available archival and printed primary sources, as well as numerous secondary sources. The only other full-length biography of Frobisher was William McFee's Life of Sir Martin Frobisher, which was published in 1928.

This work is primarily recommended for those interested in naval history or the Elizabethan period.

Martin Frobisher is remembered today for Frobisher Bay in Canada and as a sea captain in Elizabeth's fleet against the Armada. In death, as in life, his exploits are often overshadowed by more flamboyant seafarers such as Sir Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins. Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer attempts to rescue the captain from semi-obscurity and place his life in the context of its times. The spotty documentation on much of Frobisher's life makes this no easy task but the author is able to fill in the gaps with dexterity.

Frobisher was born in Yorkshire England in the mid 1530s. After the death of his father in 1542, Frobisher was set to live with various relatives ending up at his maternal uncle's in London. Sir John Yorke was a well-connected merchant who set Frobisher to sea most likely because he was a drain on Yorke's finances. Frobisher fell out with his uncle after the latter failed to help him escape from captivity in Portuguese hands and soon struck out on his own. By the 1560s Frobisher was well established as a privateer. In this profession he often showed little regard for the legality of which ships were "good prizes" and which were not. He was called often in front of the admiralty court to answer charges of piracy.

In 1576 Frobisher became the captain of an expedition to find the northwest passage from Europe to China. This expedition failed in its goal but did spark a gold rush when a souvenir rock brought back was thought to contain gold. Two more expeditions found no gold and nearly bankrupted many of the investors in the scheme.

Frobisher's abilities as a captain earned him a place among Elizabeth's admirals during the Spanish Armada of 1588. His command decisions during that time remain controversial to this day. While some see Frobisher as an unskilled ship handler who needlessly put his ship in danger, the author is convinced that Frobisher was courageously placing his ship in harm's way to interpose himself between the coast and the Spanish fleet. Unlike other of Elizabeth's captains, Frobisher was never able to become a member of the Queen's inner circle. He rose on merit alone and his star continued to wax even as other of the `sea dogs' watched their reputation falter. Most of the famed sailors modern readers would view as his peers were disliked by Frobisher as much as he was disliked by them.

After the Armada, Frobisher continued in her majesties services as a privateer. He quickly returned to his former way of intercepting and plundering ships from both friend and foe. Despite his greed, he was clever enough to understand that England's main interest was in destroying Spanish treasure even when it could not be captured. In this view he was more willing to place public good above personal self-interest more than the Queen and members of the privy council. Frobisher's courage never deserted him; he was killed in 1594 leading a landing party on a Spanish fort.

James McDermott has deftly accomplished a difficult task. He has written a comprehensive portrait of an unlikable character without overly condemning him or attempting to redeem him. Well researched and documented, Martin Frobisher: Elizabethan Privateer, is an informative and entertaining book well suited for academic and general reading.

A Pirate Exploring the Absurd.......2002-03-14

At times the story of Frobisher borders on the ethereal. Fleets of Elizabethan sea-dogs sailing every year or so towards Labrador, searching for the (apocryphphal) NorthWest Passage to China, returning each time from an ice-bound continent with lumps of black granite and then funding another trip on the strength of completely bogus reports that there was gold inside the granite rocks. The expeditions serve as a parable of greed, curiousity and folly. For Frobisher, they were the high point of a chequerered naval career. A notorious privateer, Martin served in some of Drake's greatest raids on Spanish America. He also served with distinction against the Armada. The only downside to a biography of Frobisher was that he was almost totally illiterate and that therefore almost everything about him has to be reconstructed from official records or second-hand reports. This is a great life of a strange man.

Wonderul and excellent research tome.......2001-06-15

A wonderful book written about one of England's first Maritime explorers. Frobisher usually is written with such notables of the time as Drake, Hawkins and Raleigh even if his famous voyage to the Northwest was a failure. He still managed to retain his dignity and eventually became one of England's greatest sailors. Mr. McDermott's book is a wonderful and complete picture of a quite-not-so-honest Yorkshire man who rose up to become a great explorer despite his past dealings with privateering and the law. Frobisher's last biography (AFAIK) was published in 1923 (William McFee) yet Mr. McDermotts excellent research and writing clearly rates above Mr. McFee's outline of a man whose history was written by happenstance and luck. I found this book to be invaluable research of a not-so-well-known man whom I portray at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire in California. Well researched and well written. A must for any 16th century maritime history fan or historian. Cheers!

Concise Restatement of Business Tax.......2007-06-11

Having read NOTHING in business taxation prior to the final, I used this book to cram over the course of four days. Amazingly, I received a B, which was well above the median for the course. A nice feature of this book is the casebook table that shows which parts of the outline cover which pages in each of several leading casebooks. This made my unorganized cramming sessions much more manageable. My casebook reading was covered in 89 pages with this outline. Awesome.

If it wasn't for this outline, business tax would have killed my GPA and any chances for high honors. More significantly, I actually learned a lot from those four days and have applied the principles learned at my summer job. Good luck!

"The yellow book" cruised me through Partnership Tax and Corporate Tax by spoon-feeding me all relevant laws/doctrines in a clear, concise way. This is an amazing book, which was recommended to me by an LLM Tax graduate (now an attorney for the IRS) who told me that everyone in her LLM program used this book. Get the yellow book, trash your other tax textbooks-- it will make you a star.

The Best Corporate and Partnership Tax Summary Available.......2004-04-08

This is the most outstanding tax summary available in the market. I used it when I was first learning tax and still use it today as a quick reference when looking at an area I haven't seen in a while.

The explanations and footnotes are detailed enough for the experienced tax practitioner to use as a starting point or a refresher but sufficiently straightforward for the novice. Well worth the $26.50 - probably the best professional reference book I've purchased in my tax career.

My first copy was of the previous edition, I can't wait for the new edition to come in the mail! Highly recommended.

Bakelite Bangle: Price & Identification Guide.......2005-09-15

This is absolutely the most comprehensive book about Bakelite bangles. The photographs are gorgeous and it tells you all about the history of Bakelite, how to test for authenticity, and care for your bangles. I just look at the pictures for pleasure. I feel I am a more informed consumer when I look at estate and antique sales.

THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE TO GREAT VINTAGE PLASTICS!.......2004-07-12

I have recently amassed quite a collection of bakelite, having started collecting lucites, and branching out to the more sought after famed vintage phenolic plastic we all know and love as Bakelite, and all the other manufacturer sub-names it was produced under. I bought a few references recently, but none have compared to Karima Parry's wonderful "Bakelite Bangle Price and ID Guide".

First thing you will do is eat up all the eye candy this nice large and attractive volume has to offer, and after you finish drooling and wishing, you can read all about the different types of plastics, their history, chronology, and how they differ. Ways to identify the difference between Bakelite, Celluloid, Lucite and how to spot newly worked "fakelite" as well. The author is very knowledgeable and is also willing to share her knowledge with other collectors of this engrossing hobby. I look through this book so often, and find myself reading a different section each time, and sometimes just admiring all the wonderful shots of some of the most gorgeous coveted pieces in the bakelite realm. Karima also shows a nice section on lucites as well as celluloid, so you can get a good idea of these pieces when you might be lucky enough to find one, or consider buying.

I have had the personal pleasure of talking to this author, and she is a wonderful insightful person who took the time to answer all my questions and share her knowledge with me, and I am that much wiser for that, and buying her book. I currently have 3 plastic jewelry references, and hers is by far the best.

For anyone interested in collecting bakelite bangles, other vintage plastics, and gaining a nice working knowledge of them as well as a chance to see the most gorgeous pieces as examples, this book is indispensible. The only thing I would change is the price guide, since it is unfortunately hard to use this to price. I would like to see the dimensions and all the other pertinent information, on the page with the items and not in appendix form at the back. Otherwise, I highly recommend it as a must have for your bakelite reference library.

great bakelite bangle guide.......2001-08-23

absolutely loved the huge volume of beautifully photographed bangles. wonderfully written, definitive guide. i was amazed at the loveliness of the photos considering this is a paperback book. i really couldn't expect better quality in a hardback book. a great buy and a must-have for collectors of all levels. karima parry really knows her stuff and it shows. and the price guide really helps. some of the other books i've looked at overinflate the value. she gives a realistic range, from what i've seen in buying vintage bakelite over the years.

I gave this book as a gift to my sister (and fellow bakelite lover.) It was the hardest thing to do! I wanted to keep it for myself. Karima has filled a niche in the bakelite market with her web-site and book. Easy to read, great pictures and VERY imformative! I highly recommend this book to all bakelite lovers. You will refer to this book over and over in your quest for the next great bakelite treasure.

The Best Bakelite Book Yet.......1999-11-29

This is by far the best book on Bakelite that I own. (I own every Bakelite book that is currently in print, and several that are out of print.) The hundreds of photographs of Bakelite and other plastic bracelets are colorfully crisp and clear, and the captions are informative and well-written. The text is intelligently organized, and covers quite a bit of information that has either never been addressed or has been incorrect in other books (a hot pin DOES penetrate genuine Bakelite, thank you Karima! ) The sections on Bakelite lexicon, including color names, are especially welcome. The author knows everything on this subject and has presented it wonderfully. If you will own only one Bakelite book, this is the one.

Tantalizing.......2004-05-28

Pegoletti's wonderfully researched book makes one long, not only for the days when a single figure, such as Deems Taylor, could explain all of contemporary music to a mass audience, but also for Taylor's own orchestral and vocal works which are so hard to find nowadays! Taylor may not have been much good for the women in his life, but he knew how to tell a story and how to build a career. Did he have what it takes to capture the interest of posterity? Time will make these decisions for him, but how i wish an enterprising record company would release at least the radio checks of his operas! Thank you, Mr. Pegoletti, for giving him one more shot.

Who was Deems Taylor?
A member of the Algonquin Roundtable, one of Dorothy Parker's many lovers, the co-author of an opera with Edna St. Vincent Millay, a collaborator with Leopold Stowkowski for Walt Disney's "Fantasia." He was also a commentator for CBS radio on its first day on the air; the president of ASCAP; a long-time commentator on radio concerts; and a close friend of the great musicians, artists, authors and wits of the last century, including: George Gershwin, Robert Benchley, Edna Ferber and F. Scott Fitzgerald.

In his biography, James Pegolotti weaves well the tapestry of events of this wonderful time for concert music and the theatre in New York.

The research on this book was very extensive. The subject matter was very interesting. There was always a new and fascinating aspect of Deems Taylor's life to learn about. Well written, historic, completely researched and a most enjoyable read.

Luck to happen upon this book.......1997-07-23

Being a self-proclaimed R&H buff, I was always scouting for this book and that. I found _Some Enchanted Evenings_ in a used bookstore. Besides amazing detail on both of the men and their previous works (before each collaborated with the other), there are fantastic pictures that I'd never seen before. I was highly impressed. Best of luck to anyone looking for this book--it's a wonderful addition to anyone's collection.

Saying good things about Hartmann, I feel too insignificant in life to say. But he is more than a Doctor; he's one of the most insightful social observers we have today and he's funny, too. I don't care if Hartmann does think I'm wonderful, brilliant, and handsome; I'm going to put the country's interest above mine and say: 'Turn off the tube and read this book!'

I liked this book very much, and what especially moved me was that it wasn't written by some professional writer, but by a grandfather, like mine. This book was also very personal. At some times this book was very sad, however, it wasn't as sad as some other Holocaust books that I've read. I would like to recommend this book to someone who wants to read about Holocaust, but doesn't feel like buying tissues.

A moving tribute to a great man.......2000-03-30

I could not put this book down. I read all night. I cried for much of the next day. This is one of those books which examines the most profound aspects of the human condition. Dr. Hartmann is a real person, whom many people have come to know a little about through his story. What this book did was enable us to see him as part of a family - a genetic family and a family of humanity. This is the sort of book which it is important to guide younger people to. As we leave behind the century which saw the enormous destruction of world wars, but where genocide is all too constant still, this is the sort of book which is necessary so that we don't forget. I cannot speak highly enough of this book.

A courageous man!.......1999-05-15

I was very touched when I read the book about Dr. Hartmann's life story. Dr. Hartmann is a courageous man and I like his answer that God gave man free will and it's men NOT God to blame for the Holocaust. I sincerely wish Dr. Hartmann many more years, he is an inspiration to us all!
