Anyone interested in rigorously researched late XVIII century English politics will probably enjoy (and learn) from Mr. Black's book. His work about William Pitt, after just a brief, usual part of a chapter on his parents, grandparents etc., dips immediately into maneuvers, conter maneuvers and consequences of ever shifting moods within the parliament.
Unfortunately the reader is presumed to know everything about the Seven Year War, the beginnings of America's revolution etc., as well as about England's major political parties and politicians at that time. The reader is supposed to be looking just for how Mr. Pitt and his opponents politicians handled these issues. So quite important historical events pass by as faint backgrounds.
Although this is somewhat intended to be a biography of William Pitt, and not the history of England in the 1700's, one would look for such a towering individual as a wonderful way to see big world events through England's government eyes. Instead we get a vey narrow perspective of these events. Probably that is the way most politicians see things nowadays ...

Great guide for earlier pieces.......2007-04-02
This is a great early guide for those earlier pieces that you don't often see in the other costume/vintage jewelry guides and therefore often hard to tell what they are worth. This book has plenty of pot metal made pieces, white rhinestone pave pieces, and lots of dress and fur clips. This is not a guide for beginners in collecting. My only disappointment would be the same I have with other guides - I would love to see the back of pieces; maybe not all of them of course, but I think it lends to a great education for the serious collector who isn't the most knowledgeable yet - like me! :)
Slightly out of date prices -eBay not a reliable source.......2006-05-04
eBay is NOT the be all and end all for collectible jewelry. Half of the people list items as "Bakelite" for example when they don't even know what it is. eBay is NOT the place for serious collectors of vintage jewelry. Half the time you don't know what you are going to get due to uneducated buyers trying to cash in on the term "Bakelite". Any serious collector does not use eBay as a barometer for actual values of these beautiful collectible items. There is my two cents on the topic.
Makes You Hunger for More.......2005-03-03
Without a doubt, one of the best books on this period of jewelry. I have all the books in Leigh Leshner's series and cannot rate them high enough. Brilliant photographs, excellent jewelry samples and wonderfully informative on jewelry from this period.
Great pictures but questionable price guide.......2004-09-23
This book is one of the best books for illustrations of the white metal/rhinestone forms of jewelry. All the photos are of high quality and show the pieces well. I found the price advisories to be questionable because the values listed seemed very high for local auctions and dealers and WAY high for the eBay world. Perhaps this is because the publication was over 2 years ago so the prices are even older. All in all a nice book - just get a second opinion on any $ values.
white metal pictures.......2004-02-11
The author has wisely given us 400 beautiful pictures of
old white metal costume jewelry. Since so much is unsigned
the pictures will make it easier to evaluate pot metal pieces.
This is the first book devoted entirely to white metal and is
in a class all of its own. The illustrations make this a
"coffee table" book. The author establishes all the variables
taken in when pricing. All the jewelry in the book is mint
condition. In few words she also explains that the book is
devoted to the beauty and value of the jewelry, minimizing the
importance of signed pieces. Thank you Miss Leshner.

Frustrating!.......2007-06-09
This book leads you to believe that you will get instructions on "What to do with your brain injured child." I found it was more like one man's personal story of the development of a therapy program and the his institute. Details of his analysis and people in his life get tiresome and I found myself often thinking. "Okay fine. I agree with the principle but what DO I DO?" There are some sketchy instructions, but I found myself at a loss for how to carry them out since my daughter doesn't understand spoken language. When you are desperate for instructions and frankly don't want to read a story, this book is frustrating!
Use your own critical faculties! .......2006-09-09
My son has Down's Syndrome. My friend suggested I look into Doman's program as several people she knew with typical children were big fans. So I bought this book which offers no real practical advice at all but documents the history of Glenn Doman's research and treatment program. Doman claimed to have developed these treatments with his team in the 50's and 60's at which time other treatments for brain damaged children were completely unsuccessful or worsened the child's situation. Reading the book I thought it seemed authentic and the things he was suggesting didn't seem very different from the early intervention strategies that my son was already benefiting from in the state funded program. I thought perhaps Doman was an early pioneer of this now readily accepted treatment.
I asked my son's physio-therapist - provided by this state funded program - who has a PHD and did her research on children with Down's Syndrome (I know that she knows what she is talking about - I have seen it with my own eyes) - if she had heard of Doman, expecting that he would be a major name in the field. She turned quite white and told me that this program is dangerous. She said that she had seen children with dislocated joints from the treatments and that the program was so instrusive it would ruin our family life and my marriage.
What I think is most instructive is that when I saw one of the 'fans' that my friend knows - and I told her what the physiotherpist had said - she still offered to give me literature to join the program! - she was like some cult member. I am so happy with the state funded program - I don't understand why anyone who wasn't brain damaged/washed themselves would get involved with these people? Please use your critical faculties and check out any program fully before treating your child .
How Could You NOT Do This For Your Brain-Injured Child?.......2006-05-07
This fantastic book taught me more in 2 days than I've learned elsewhere in 2 years. Finally actual help is out there, not just negativity. This is what I expected to learn from my developmental pediatrician, but didn't. It's wonderful to know there are people in this world who give so selflessly for our children. I loved this one so much I ordered "How to Teach Your Baby to be Physically Superb" & "How to Teach Your Baby to Read" I can't wait to see some real improvement in my daughter!!

I have a Down's child. I found this book to be very helpful. There was a bit of weeding of the history of the Institute to be done. But, by following the information I was able to create a program to fit our lifestyle. (It helped to read the other books by the author on Reading, Math, Physical Activity and Knowledge.) I read the author's other books first, and I felt that this book was the missing link I needed to create a program for my child.
If you are looking for a Step A, Step B... it is not quite that clear. This is a guideline...not child specific. But, frankly if it was specific I would be very skeptical. How could one program be good for the wide variety of "brain injured" children that exist?
If you want to help your child, it will take effort on your part. And, it can be time consuming, depending on how far/fast you want your child to advance. But, after only a couple of months mild/moderate effort, I have seen significant progress...and my son amazes his therapists.
NOT a "how to" book.......2004-09-10
A better title for this book might be "How a wonderful, caring physical therapist labored on behalf of brain-injured children". It is an interesting story about the admirable life of Glenn Doman. It is NOT a book about what to DO with your brain-injured child. There was literally no specific information about therapy techniques or teaching protocols. It was not a wasted purchase because it is a beautiful story, but it does not fulfill the promise of the title.

Arthur Hartmann (1881-1956), a celebrated violinist who performed over a thousand recitals throughout Europe and the United States, met Claude Debussy in 1908, after he had transcribed 'Il pleure dans mon coeur' for violin and piano. Their relationship developed into friendship, and in February 1914 Debussy accompanied Hartmann in a performance of three of Hartmann's transcriptions of Debussy's works. The two friends saw each other for the last time on the composer's birthday, 22 August 1914, shortly before Hartmann and his family fled Europe to escape the Great War. With the publication of Hartmann's memoir Claude Debussy as I Knew Him, along with the twenty-two known letters from Claude Debussy and the thirty-nine letters from Emma Debussy to Hartmann and his wife, the richness and importance of their relationship can be appreciated for the first time. The memoir covers the years 1908-1918. Debussy's letters to Hartmann span the years 1908-1916, and Emma (Mme) Debussy's letters span the years 1910-1932. Also included are the facsimile of Debussy's Minstrels manuscript transcription for violin and piano, three previously unpublished letters from Debussy to Pierre Louÿs, and and correspondece between Hartmann and Béla Bartók, Nina Grieg, Alexandre Guilmant, Charles Martin Loeffler, Marian MacDowell, Hans Richter, and Anton Webern, along with Hartmann's memoirs on Loeffler, Ysaÿe, Joachim and Grieg. Samuel Hsu is a pianist and professor of music at Philadelphia Biblical University. He completed his Ph.D. in historical musicology at the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1972 with a dissertation on Debussy. Sidney Grolnic has been a librarian in the Music Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia for over twenty years and serves as curator of the library's Hartmann Collection. Mark A. Peters has recently received his Ph.D. in historical musicology at the University of Pittsburgh; his dissertation was on J. S. Bach's sacred cantatas to texts by Mariana von Ziegler.
