In August 1914, as World War I began, Ernest Shackleton and a small band of explorers sailed for Antarctica aboard a ship called Endurance. "Better a live mule than a dead lion," he remarked to his wife upon his return, but in the end he died in the Antarctic that called him back, and back again, and he was buried there at his wife's behest.
Now, at last, here is a book that tells the whole story of an explorer who ranks with Ferdinand Magellan, Christopher Columbus, James Cook, and Sir Richard Burton in his determination to follow his vision and his dream.

You need this one, too........2001-09-02
This book must be added to your collection if you are a true student of the Shackleton story. It combines the best of all the books (picture books, biographies, and personal accounts) out there with beautiful photographs in the tradition of National Geographic and the color shots truly enliven the original black and whites from the expedition. The maps are outstanding and there are reproductions of pages from Shackleton's and Hurley's diaries.
I haven't really found a book on the Shackleton story that is horrible . Maybe the story is so inspiring it tells itself. Trapped by The Ice, the picture book for kids by Michael McCurdy, is the worst example I know and I still like that for the rendering of the sea leopard leaping at Ordes-Lee, the officer in charge of food supplies. There are better children's books, Sea of Ice, by Monica Kulling, a fairly easy read for upper elementary students with beautiful watercolors, Trial By Ice, by K. M. Kostyal, a photobiography of Shackleton, Ice Story for middle school students, with black and white photographs and a magnificent large picture book with paintings and photographs, Spirit of Endurance, by Jennifer Armstrong. Get them all!
A maxum for True Leadership: dedication with heart........2001-04-21
The major events of the ill-fated voyage of Sir Ernest Shakelton's attempt to cross Antarctica are well known. However, what most do not know or understand is the depth and breadth of this extraordinary man. Shackleton was not only a bonified explorer, more importantly he was a noble leader.
"Leaders do not force their fellow citizens to follow, they inspire them to do so."
If there is one thing to learn from this book, it is the true meaning of leadership and how important willing-loyalty is to our basic survival. Seen in the face of unimaginable odds, they survived - and they survived in whole: worn and frazzled from nearly 2 years of struggle, they were rescued mentaly tough and spiritually whole. In no small part, this was due to the quality of leadership demonstrated by Shackleton: it was embraced and reflected in his men.
It is amazing, this entity we call 'the human spirit'. If trained - but, not broken - like a fine horse, it has great wonders to show and is a true beauty to behold. Such are the many lessons learned from the tales of this "Endurance" voyage: did anyone ever wonder about the naming of that ship? What started out as a championing exploration, became a struggle with life itself to survive.
Likewise, what most will perceive as an "interesting read", will soon become an invaluable source for life-guiding principles. Get the book - read it - and put these incalculably precious lessons into practice in your own life. You never know when you'll need the endurance.

For at least the last five or six years I have purchased this guide. This and the Blue Book of Gun Values really work well together for me in making an educated reference point when out in the field and in the vault as well. I like this guide because of the pictures too and there's quite a bit of information and history in it too.

Good book with lots of photos.......2007-01-04
Excellent book for the photos that show most of the guns listed. Price ranges given are good.
There are several much better choices for gun values.......2004-08-30
This book is of little value to the serious gun buyer/seller and gives only a rough approximation of a small number of guns in the world. I strongly suggest you instead choose the 25th edition of the Blue Book of Gun Values or the 2004 edition of the Standard Catalog of Firearms. Both have much more detailed information than Gun Trader's Guide in terms of number of guns, conditions, variants, prices, and other useful reference info. The Standard Catalog also has a lot of photos, while the Blue Book has almost none. The Standard Catalog and the Blue Book are what the dealers use in pricing used guns. Either is far better than Modern Gun Values, in my opinion, and I have been a gun hobbyuist for 40+ years.

Several of the pictures do not match the firearm listed. Incomplete discriptions, it apparently wasn't proof-read.
Great Pictures.......2001-01-03
This is the book for you! It has great pictures of each model. I have used it to help identify firearms and it comes in handy for grading firearms.
Some Mainstream Guns Missing.......2000-07-06
Overall I feel this is a good buy as I have identified several older model weapons without much trouble. However, trying to find more recent model guns has been dismal. For example try to find any of the new Sig Sauer pistols or any of the new Derringers! Anyway, I have identified a couple of H&R pistols (pretty neat trick, good black and white photos helped tremendously) and a couple of rifles (one a Winchester rifle and you know how many flavors of those exist!) again by picture then description. I like how the book is broken into three sections (pistol, rifle, shotgun). The pistol part is broken into semi-auto then revolver for each company presented. I would have liked to have a more comprehensive breakout of new weapons (as I mentioned before) and more information on the various companies (some had nothing but an address...if that), but all in all a must have books for my library. A good buy.
Good price accuracy....needs more photos.......2000-04-07
This book is a good, quick reference for most available firearms, and has some particularly good sections on older arms, such as the early 20th century Luger pistols. It does seem to be missing some of the more common retail products (for example, finding and identifying the rifles sold at most Wal-Mart stores was difficult, or they weren't included...yet these are more likely to be found in circulation than a pre-64 Model 70). There were good black-and-white illustrations of many guns, but some guns had no photos and this is a drawback...especially if you are trying to identify an old family gun or the like.
Overall, it is still worth the price, and I recommend it as a supplement to some of the other more exhaustive works.

The essential Zombies reference, with the history of the band and complete discogagraphy of every recording in every configuration issued through the publication date. Not a literary masterpiece, but a fine book that nicely fits an important niche. Well recommended.
Probably the best book I've read under 100 pages!.......2000-10-28
At first, one would think the Zombies deserved more than a 96-page book. But don't be fooled by this book's size: the author certainly made the most of each page (full of text in small print) and seems to have exhausted the subject. This isn't simply a discography, as the title implies, but a biography with an emphasis on the discography. And that's what makes this book fascinating, since the Zombies' discography can be rather confusing with so many line-up changes, rerecordings and partial comebacks. Their former members' recent work is also covered. A must for Zombies fans!

This is a charming little book of Jewish humor - and I emphasize "little" since it is really quite slender. Vorspan has some knowing fun with some ethnic stereotypes and he'll make you laugh hard now and again. It would have been nice if the book were a bit more fleshed out.
