An honest look at the sealing industry.......2002-10-28

As a person who has led campaigns against the Canadian Sealing industry for 25 years, I can vouch for the accuracy of the events portrayed in this book. Mickey Dwyer is a sealer and no friend of mine but what he writes in this book speaks more to the issues of cruelty and waste than anything that I or any other opponent could write. We would be called liars for stating what Dwyer proudly confesses to in this book. It is a worthwhile book and deserves a place in the history of the bloody Canadian seal hunt.

I was new to the AR-15 pattern rifle. This book was informative and still a great read. Provides a full history of the design with info about competing rifles. It could use some updating to cover newer accessories.

I enjoyed and found the information useful. If your new to the AR15, this is
a great way to get up to speed on the subject. The author knows his subject
and communicates it well. There's a lot more that could have been covered
but for that, one is well advised to visit www.ar15.com
You'll find answers there to questions you probably haven't even thought of.

The Complete AR-15/M16 Sourcebook: What Every Shooter Needs to Know keeps with its title. Well, somewhat. The book is a very detailed SOURCEBOOK. Do not buy this book to find out what you can do to accessorize your rifle. This book goes into detail about the origins of the AR-15/M16 beginning with the early years and including some photos and text on early models and models that did not make it. The book talks about some of the larger companies that make the AR-15/M16, and has pictures of most of the variants by company. It is a worthwhile read if you desire to learn about the history of the rifle, but is by no means what every reader needs to know.

i had this shipped from amazon.com to manila, and totally loved it. there are so much variants of the M16/AR15 and it gets really hard to keep track of all . this guide tells you the make ,where to find it, who has it, and when it was made. i also learned so much from this book regarding the "markings" of an M16 and what makes yours special. i am a true loveer of the M16 rifle, and am very proud to own this book. now, i have learned many things which i haven't had the slightest idea of, before i bought this book! this truly is a good buy, if you want to authenticate, modify, and just plainly admore your M16 rifle

I love making my own decorations but I like to finish projects that look tasteful and as nice (or better) than anything I could buy. You can't go wrong with this book, whether you are just starting out or looking for a larger challenge. There are some easier projects as well as ones that are more difficult. You could spend years using this book and not run out of ideas. Plenty of full-color photos, step by step directions and techniques. Worth every penny you spend on this one!

I borrowed this book from a friend and had to buy a copy for myself. It gets your right-brain in high gear. If you're looking for the cutesy, folksy arts & crafts flowing out of China these days, forget this one. But if you like to create and like the unique, this is it. Even if you've never did a cloth before, this book will show you step by step and lead you to create a work of art!

Terrific book.......2000-01-23

I love this book. In the first place, it's just a beautiful publication--very well written and designed, and loaded with examples of gorgeous floorcloths by many artists. I borrowed it from the library just to look at the pictures, then decided I had to buy a copy for myself! Secondly, the instructions are wonderfully clear and precise (I've written and edited instructional manuals, so I know good instructions when I see them.)

I've made one floorcloth and have started a second. This is practically the first time in my 49 years that I have actually completed a craft project, and I'm thrilled with myself, with my new floorcloth (now on my bathroom floor) and with this book. Anyone who is interested in floorcloths surely would want a copy.

Entertaining for children and adults.......2001-05-01

This book is quite charming. As reported in a previous review, the little package one receives is approximately 4" by 5". A pocket on one side contains six punch-out characters, a few punch-out items (incl. vases of flowers, pictures and a pitcher) to be placed in the rooms, and a 32-page booklet about Van Gogh and his paintings. The other side contains the pop-up book, which one opens completely so that the covers touch each other, thus making a carousel of a four-room house -- kitchen, bedroom, study and living room. You can change the pictures that are hanging or place a new work on the easel, etc.

This is a lovely item, obviously assembled by and for those who share an affection for this complex painter.

A fun way to learn!.......2001-01-04

This book is published in association with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Netherlands and the National Gallery in London. It is accompanied by a small booklet that tells the story of his life and features some of his many pictures. This is not your typical pop-up book since "Van Gogh's House" opens up into a circular four-room house. The furniture from his pictures have been transformed into 3-D pop-ups ("Van Gogh's Chair" for example). In order to bring his house to life one can play with punch-out figures that depict Van Gogh and his friends ("Joseph Roulin" for example). It is also up to you to decorate the house with Van Gogh's flowers ("Vase of Irises" for example) and his pictures. The book is approx. 4"x5" and folded out it becomes twice the size. For older children it is a unique and playful introduction to this great painter. I like it because it brings together my love for pop-up books and Van Gogh.

A "must" read for teachers.......2005-08-05

This book is a long-awaited accessory for teachers of any grade and gives exceptional insight into the interactions of parents and teachers primarily from a teacher's perspective. The ideas expressed in this easy to read handbook apply to many situations in modern day schools and is a "must" for any teacher who wants to improve relationships with often difficult parents.
I understand that there is an additional book in process looking at the same isssues from a parent's perspective ("Not Just a Babysitter")

Well-written synopsis...not for in-depth study.......2006-12-26

I decided to order this book as part of my growing collection of Russian music literature. In preparing various lecture recitals, an eventual DMA dissertation topic, and out of pure interest, I thought it necessary to an overview of some of the most important Russian composers of the 19th century. This book is essentially a leaner version of complete Grove (which is available in many volumes and online).

The composers discussed include Glinka, Borodin, Balakirev, Musorgsky, and Tchaikovsky. Certainly this set of composers represents the development of Russian art as it tried to separate itself from the common European practices at the time. Each composer is discussed by highly-respected experts in the field, including Gerald Abraham, David Brown, Edward Garden, and David Lloyd-Jones. The writing is succinct, albeit a bit brief. The research, although it is quite incredible, is not the most recent in all cases, though the authors do explore many facets of the composers' lives, their compositional styles, their works, and their affect on and influences from other Russian and European composers.

Each "essay" is divided into sections, for example, Tchaikovsky (Brown) is split into the following sub-categories: 1840-70; High nationalism, 1870-74; Increasing problems, 1874-7; Marriage: crisis and aftermath, 1877-8; Creative trough, 1878-84; Creative renewal, 1884-90; Last Years, 1891-3; Technique and style. In addition, there is a compiled works' list and bibliography at the end of each section (essay on a specific composer).

My only complaint is that the book is indeed so short that is cannot possibly cover all the necessary content to give an in-depth portrayal of these great composers, much less a complete one. There are very few visual musical examples to accompany the written text. Of course, this book is only meant to be a cursory view of the larger subject matter. In that, it succeeds.

I purchased this book because it appealed to my interest in Jewish history, and because I thought perhaps it also discussed the historical relationships of Muslims and non-Muslims in the Caucasus in the late 19th century. (Not to mention its low price.)

Alas, David Toback (or rather, his grand-daughter, who adapted the book from his 1888 and 1889 journals) only once mentioned the Caucasus Muslim communities, despite travels over several years of extreme duress. This consequence stemmed from his apparent lack of contact with Muslims, however, undoubtedly not from their respect for dhimmis around them.

In any case, Toback's saga has much to hold the reader's interest in its own right, and I was delighted with the book, which I tore through in one marathon four-hour sitting last summer. Toback relates, after all, the extreme poverty of the Jewish communities during those times, their pious, even righteous religious orthodoxy, and the afflictions imposed upon them by hateful tsarist troops, peasants and lawmakers, who deprived Jews of lives, liberty and property at their routine whim.

Certainly in current times, one cannot say that Jews anywhere in the world live wholly without fear and some concern about the future, as anti-Antisemitism has made a frightening and extraordinary comeback only 60 years after the liberation of Auschwitz and 50 years after 1 million Jews were driven with nothing but the clothes on their backs from their homes and businesses within the Arab Muslim world.

Despite the recent turn of events, however, this book provides a very real reminder that things can always be worse. Indeed for David Toback, they almost always did get worse, until he finally convinced his wife to flee to the US., a feat which took several years to accomplish.

In truth, there is not so much difference between the attacks, firebombings, murders and forced evacuations suffered by Toback's people and family and the situation of Jewish people today in Israel and France and in Moscow and the Caucasus, where Muslim fundamentalists think nothing of blowing up pizza parlors, buses, theaters and schools.

A question this book raised for me is why North American Jews remain so complacent. This book showed the perilous possibilities that can and do sometimes flow from ignoring the past and the trends of one's times.
