Book Description
Praised by his admirers as "one of those rare heroic figures out of Plutarch" and as "an intrepid Don Quixote," Brazilian lawyer Heráclito Fontoura Sobral Pinto (1893-1991) was the most consistently forceful opponent of dictator Getúlio Vargas. Through legal cases, activism in Catholic and lawyers' associations, newspaper polemics, and a voluminous correspondence, Sobral Pinto fought for democracy, morality, and justice, particularly for the downtrodden.
This book is the first of a projected two-volume biography of Sobral Pinto. Drawing on Sobral's vast correspondence, which was not previously available to researchers, John W. F. Dulles confirms that Sobral Pinto was a true reformer, who had no equal in demonstrating courage and vehemence when facing judges, tribunals, and men in power. He traces the leading role that Sobral played in opposing the Vargas regime from 1930 to 1945 and sheds light on the personalities and activities of powerful figures in the National Security Tribunal, the police, the censorship bureau, and the Catholic Church.
In addition to the many details that this volume adds to Brazilian history, it illuminates the character of a man who sacrificed professional advancement and emolument in the interest of fighting for justice and charity. Thus, it will be important reading not only for students of Brazilian history, but also for a wider audience dedicated to the crusade for human rights and political freedom and the reformers who carry on that struggle.

Despite its irreverent title, I actually wish I had this handy how-to when I got divorced a few years back. Combining humor with understanding, this book dispenses wise advice on how to survive a potentially devastating time

A Must-Read............2004-09-17
This book is a must-read for anyone who has read and successfully applied, "How to Date a White Woman: A Practical Guide for Asian Men". The tips in here can be applied to dumping girlfriends and brides alike, and are essential to recovering mental health!
Ms. Covington covers a lot.......2003-02-20
Yes a woman named Lee wrote this book. She was on the radio talking about it. I had thought it was a man. My ignorance. I am the first to admit that divorce is horrible but sometimes necessary. Ask any loving man that has a self absorbed wife. Men get the short end of the stick in divorce and this is the one book you will find that addresses how you can get out with more than just the shirt on your back which she (and I mean her lawyer not her) will still try to get. The main thing is planning. If you plan ahead you will make divorce as painless for you as possible. If you are a woman reading this and think god how could someone write about this, take a look at the number of books written on the reverse side that show how to squeeze a man until he cries like a choir boy. Ms. Covington does say that you may have to pay and in some cases you should pay but the lawyers are the ones that will pressure your dear wife to nail you for everything.
Yess! You gonna need this book........2001-11-23
Get the book before your wife had put her hands on it all. You gonna need all advice you can get. You may save on a lawyer as well by reading it ahead! And on the doctor too..
The REASON wives go for the jugular.......2000-03-24
I read this book after being dumped by my partner of 27 years because I honestly wanted to see the man's side of things. Well, the cruel and so-called "humorous" tips on how to cheat on your wife and deprive her of her legal rights confirmed what people warned: You've become just a business deal and a chess game to him. It helped me anticipate (especially the chapter on How to Hide Your Money) what Mr. Wonderful and his new woman (of course, 15 years younger) would eventually do--write off romantic interludes as "business expenses", put his income in her name and live happily ever after--2,000 miles away so he'd never have to co-parent. Six figure income and European travel, yet no alimony and only 800 a month child support? In fact, it cost me a fortune in legal bills just to defend against bogus affidavits by HIS attorney, designed to scare me into compliance. This is the kind of guy who will later whine that his kids are strangers and his ex-wife is a witch. And guess what Mr. Covington--did you warn the prospective new wife/girlfriend that whatever he did to #1 to get to her, is probably what he'll do to her to get to #3? I found this book unfortunately polarizing and cruel, but at least it served as warning of what I was up against. For something really valuable, both genders should read Crazy Time. Nobody wins in a divorce, especially not the girlfriend who's egged it on.
Impractical Advice for a Man Trapped in an Unhappy Marriage.......2000-03-22
It seems to me that this book appeals to the most selfish sort of husband or girl friend. It is too bad that a person who would agree with the things said in this book would be very unlikely to become more happy after following the advice given. Unless a person learns to be less selfish, I am quite sure a man will discover that the perfect girl friend, who has now become the perfect wife, will in no time turn into what the author calls Wife One, Wife Two or Wife Three, which are three stereotypical kinds of problem wives. Likewise, the man who remains single with his piles of hidden money bags is unlikely to find a bit of happiness until he can learn about truth and justice. It's not a pleasant world for the man who must suspect every person of being just as dishonest and inequitable as he has been.
Product Description
Read the controversial, previously banned book Howard Stern considers required reading for any man (or woman) even considering divorce! Newly revised and updated. Unlike other divorce books, this one preaches no stay-together sermons and offers no sugarcoated, politically correct guidance. How to Dump Your Wife: Practical Advice for the Good Man Trapped in a Bad Marriage is about knowing that sometimes a marriage is simply beyond savingregardless of whether a desperate or vengeful wife can accept the fact. Irreverent, funny, and brutally honest, Lee Covington teaches men to survive divorce despite a legal system in which the cards are heavily stacked against them. Her practical advice on withstanding the emotional and financial ravages of divorce focuses on how to survive three types of wives: the doting, clingy sweetheart who wants to stay married at all costs; the shrill, abusive, spiteful, and totally draining harpy; the self-absorbed career woman with powerful friends and her own agenda. The divorce laws in each of the fifty states are also summarized in a series of helpful charts.
Customer Reviews:
Buy this book - NOW! Before you tell your wife you want a divorce!.......2006-03-23
This is the best book you can buy if you ever even think you might want to dump your wife. Read it and take the time to "think before you act"! Protect yourself in the long run. This book has a lot of funny stuff in it, but basically it has a lot of great advice on how to deal with ending a relationship, and how to get out of it alive and with a little bit of the money you worked your whole life for....
A funny and informative look at a sometimes unfunny thing........2005-08-12
Lee Covington gives the man contemplating divorce a very thorough and helpful guide. She treats things with humor, but underneath are some very helpful tips and warnings. She uses examples of three different kinds of wife and how to handle each one, including the one who may shoot the man. It is not a substitute for actual legal advise (from a lawyer who is not a friend or acquaintance). Buy it and send it in plain wrapper to the workplace of a friend who is going through, or about to go through, a divorce. Buy it for yourself, but hide it from your present wife.

Customer Reviews:
A Must Have for All Telephone Collectors.......2007-07-23
If you don't want just to collect antique telephones but also understand how they work, this book is the source for almost all your answers. Very detailed descriptions, very nice schematics and pictures.
Old-time Telephones.......2006-07-10
Very informative book: for the collector, restorer and even the technician. Probably the best technical information widely available on the development of the US Public Telephone system subscriber instruments from turn-of-the-century local battery-magneto to the Princess and Trimlines. Covers development, design and even touches on the corporate thinking which influenced this. Keeps the interest of the engineer but not so technical that the amateur shouldn't be able to follow it too. While the emphasis is on Bell phones, the other major competitor's equivalents are covered as well.
Improve the Quality of your Telephoning, Throw away your cell.......2006-03-16
I fell in love with old telephones when I bought my first oak wall telephone at an uncle's farm sale in S/E Minnesota way back in 1967. It didn't make any difference to me that it didn't work ... I just liked oak. I bought more wall phones, oak, then walnut and even one with a cherrywood case. The house got filled up with phones that were as much as 5 feet tall. I started collecting desk telephones and candlestick telephones instead. Very few of them worked but that didn't make any difference ... it was a history thing. Besides, I had no training in telephony and there weren't any books on the subject anyway.
And back then most folks, including me, were scared to death of Ma Bell's "Telephone Police."
But now Dr. Meyer's book is out ... I already knew the history of most of my phones but now with the information in Dr. Meyer's book I can actually make some of those old timers work again. If you are a newcomer to the telephone collecting hobby, you have a tremendous advantage over me ... it took me 40 years to learn the history of the telephone. You can buy Dr. Meyer's book, learn the history of the telephone in one weekend and at the same time have the technical information provided to you that will enable you to put grandpa's phone back on line again. The telephones from the 40s, 50s and 60s were the best ever made.
Put your offshore throwaway phone in the drawer ... use Old-Time Telephones as a guide to hook up grandpa's Western Electric 302 or 500 set, or a comparable A/E, Stromberg or Kellogg phone ... put a good phone in service in your house.
BTW ... I don't recall that Dr. Meyer's book gives instructions on the use of a rotary dial. You and your kids will have to figure out on your own how to do that.
A Comprehensive Guide For Beginner Or Expert.......2006-01-16
I have worked with old telephones for more than 40 years, and the repair and restoration of them is part of my livelihood. I can state, with authority, that Ralph Meyer has brought together everything a person needs to know about old telephone theory, repair, restoration, and history. I highly recommend Old Time Telephones! to beginners and seasoned collectors or technicians who need an indispensable reference source. Dr. Meyer's book sets the standard for old telephone reference material.
A Valuable Reference of Telephone Technical Information .......2006-01-09
I bought Dr. Meyer's first book, Old-Time Telephones, fifteen years ago. It was a great reference on the technical workings of the telephone concepts from the early years. Dr. Meyers out does himself with his Second edition of Old-Time Telephones. He has expanded the information provided in the first reference and added much new data in twenty-two chapters. Including high quality print, pictures, drawings, etc. of circuits, transmitters, receivers, induction coils and wiring schematics. At first glance you will recognize the dedication and time Dr. Meyers has contributed to this reference. He explains the concepts and early developments of the ninetieth century pioneers who developed telegraph systems prior to the invention of the telephone. Meyers explains the experiments of Bell, Gray and others who developed and invented telephone communication, used for more that a century. He has dissected and compares telephone circuits of major manufactures of the last century up to and including the present times. Dr Meyers has written all this in simple language anyone can understand. Old Time Telephones 2nd Edition has received some great reviews from numerous telephone collectors who have worked in the industry and collected telephones, more than thirty years. This book is a valuable reference of technical information for anyone interested in telephone communications past and present. Enjoy!!

This Sale is a Ripoff.......2005-08-26
This book sells off the author's website for $34 USD, brand new. Do not buy this used copy from a very indecent seller.
Practical, beautifully illustrated, a must-have!.......2001-11-14
This book is the 2nd book by the author on the subject (the 1st one is out of print.) It's widely recognized as the ultimate source of information on how to make mokume gane.
Mokume gane is a traditional Japanese metalsmithing technique by which sheets of different metals - generally copper, silver, gold, and alloys of those - are stacked and welded together. This results in a piece of metal that displays a woodgrain-like pattern that shows the different metals' colors.
This book focuses on the different techniques to make mokume gane. It addresses the 2 usual methods, liquid and solid bonding, and also deals with more complex and high tech methods. One of the best feature is an entire chapter on a great low cost method. Not only does it address the methods to make the raw billets, it also talks about each technique that can be used to reveal the internal pattern.
The book is maybe 50% to 75% written by Midgett himself, but he has not hesitated in leaving others talk about different techniques. This results in a text that addresses each area with great confidence.
The book is enriched with many photographies, both step by step illustrations of techniques as well as examples of art works, many of them trully stuning. Again, Mr. Midgett gave a lot of rooms for other contributing artists to display their work.
The last chapter is a series of projects, increasing in difficulty, profusely illustrated with clear pictures.
All and all, one of the best "how to" book I've ever purchased. Complete, clear, and yet not boring at all. Highly recommended!

Book Description
Twenty-one years after his death, Bob Marley is still the undisputed king of reggae. Dennis Morris began photographing Marley when he was performing with the Wailers in London, and continued until the musician’s death. Morris’s recollections, quotations from Marley’s lyrics, and interviews that reveal Marley’s thoughts on life, politics, and race accompany the images. New photographs are featured throughout this second edition of the tribute to reggae's main man.
Customer Reviews:
absolutely gorgeous.......2002-03-19
Bob Marley is not only one of the most influential singer/songwriters ever, but he is incredibly photogenic. His songs are as beautiful as he is. Morris' book gives great insight into the man he was, not only through the main component of the book, the photographs, but also the commentary. The pictures are incredibly expressive, showing all of Bob's emotions. Morris' comments are perfectly placed and very well written. Action shots, stills, live shots of concerts...Morris has it all. Though my musical tastes have changed over time, and I expect they will even more as I grow older, Bob Marley will always be, by far, my favorite.
Photo's of a true man!.......2002-01-06
Excellent book, alot of awsome pictures never seen before must buy!!!!!! Alonzo Herrera Jah live!!!!
The Worth Of A Picture.......2000-04-26
If a man is judged great by what he has done, what of he whose best may still lie ahead? Bob Marley has left a legacy that will lead a nation made of all peoples into greatness. His songs not only describe the path, but encourage us to take it. This pictoral of his life is as close as many can come to the essence of Bob without actually listening to the music. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then Bob's music is a stroll through the Lourve.
