Book Description
This biography of parliamentarian Andrew MacLaren also serves as a history of British social reform in the 20th century, revisiting a time in the nation's sociopolitical history in which the eradication of poverty was the central goal among a majority of its politicians and intellectuals. Having risen to prominence among the radicals determined to root out poverty, MacLaren was soon introduced to the work of American social reformer Henry George. MacLaren's story reveals the major influence George had on British politicians, including Winston Churchill, who saw in his reforms a method of eradicating the poverty and social injustices of the 19th century without diminishing the liberty and sturdy independence of the individual. Though he remained a radical throughout his life, MacLaren's integrity gained him the respect of his political opponents, and his life philosophy offers valuable ideas for addressing some of today's socioeconomic problems.
Book Description
An in-depth biography of one of this century's most inspiring climbers.
A legendary German climber, Hermann Buhl was the first man to summit Nanga Parbat. His account of that climb, Nanga Parbat Pilgrimage (see page X), remains a mountaineering classic, and Buhl himself continues to inspire today's mountaineers. This biography, written by Reinhold Messner and journalist and mountaineer Horst Hfler, includes material from Buhl's previously unavailable diaries, as well as interviews with Buhl's family and climbing partners, and essays and commentary by Messner, Hfler, and Buhl's own daughter. The book covers Buhl's childhood and development as a climber, his ascent of Nanga Parbat, his disappearance on Broad Peak (which he climbed with Kurt Diemberger), plus later views of his accomplishments.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific way to get to know a legend.......2005-08-23
Hermann Buhl: Climbing Without Compromise does a great job of engaging the reader on several levels. Firstly, the photos are absolutely stunning. I've seen books with only photos, not as good as those included here, that retail for more than this book. The second way this book engages readers is through the well-told story of one of the most interesting characters in mountaineering history. Finally, and perhaps best of all, by using extensive source material from Hermann Buhl directly, this book actually comes across as a personal introduction to the legend, Hermann Buhl, himself.
3.5 stars -a solid addition to the mountaineering literature.......2001-06-07
Hermann Buhl was one of the greatest mountain climbers of the last century and this book consists primarily of excerpts from his climbing diaries, starting from his earliest climbs as a teenager in the Dolomites, continuing through his major triumphs, including, of course, the conquest of Nanga Parbat that made him world famous, and ending with his ill-fated attempt on Chogolisa. There are also several biographical essays, including contributions by his daughter and a long-time climbing friend, and many of the diary excerpts are accompanied by further editorial details about the circumstances of the climbs. The ugly politics that were involved in the Nanga Parbat climb and their effect on Buhl are also discussed in the commentaries.
Although it is not as detailed an account of Buhl's climbing life as "Nanga Parbat Pilgrimage", this newer book has several advantages over Buhl's autobiography. The perspectives offered by the third-party commentators are very useful. There is a full description of Buhl's final climbs and untimely death. "Climbing Without Compromise" is nicely illustrated with black-and-white and color photographs that make a great contribution (although the story would be easier to follow in places with the addition of some maps). Finally, and perhaps most importantly, one gets to read Buhl's story in his own words. According to the editors Messner and Höfler, Kurt Maix, the editor of "Nanga Parbat Pilgrimage", re-wrote considerable portions of Buhl's text using far more flowery and poetic language than Buhl himself would have chosen. In any event, the two books, while overlapping to a degree, do complement each other as well. (And where there is repetition, the English-language reader will benefit from having access to two translations.)

Practical Aviation Law.......2007-01-04
The book was very informative but not one that i would just go out and buy if I did not have to.
If you hold an FAA certificate -- you need this book!.......2002-10-23
Several years ago, while attending Emery-Riddle Aeronautical University, this book was used as our textbook for Aviation Law. To this day, anytime I get on the subject of Aviation Law, I recommend this book to anyone who holds an FAA certificate. I'm a Maintenance Supervisor for a major airline and have suggested it to my employees who have found themselves in less than desirable situations involving enforcement actions. They always come back to me with the same comment; "I wish I had read this book before I got into trouble." Learn from their mistakes - read the book before you NEED the book. It's short and to the point, you won't be sorry!
A superb reference for aviation professionals & hobbiests........2000-08-06
Now in a completed updated, revised and expanded second edition, Scott Hamilton's Practical Aviation Law provides complete, competent course for self-study or undergraduate study on how the legal system works with respect to aviation activities. With entertaining examples of aviation law in action, all of the recent changes to date in statutory and regulatory law are clarified, including international law. Practical Aviation Law is soundly recommended as a quick reference guide for aviation managers, private and professional aviators, flight cres, airline personnel, aircraft owners, air traffic controllers, air safety investigators, and the non-specialist general reader involved in aviation as a profession or hobby.
Excellent book. A must read for all pilots.......1999-05-31
I'm a pilot not a lawyer and I have no connection with the author or the company. This excellent book explains in easy to understand language how the aviation legal system works (and doesn't work). The book tells you what steps to take or more importantly, not to take when dealing with the FAA or other aviation related parties. All pilots should read this book to learn how to protect your license.
Book Description
Companion workbook complete with learning exercises corresponding to each chapter of the textbook.
Customer Reviews:
An excellent companion to the text.......2000-07-23
The workbook really brings out the important points to remember from the text. It also ensures that the students begin to be able to pick out legal issues on their own. I highly recommend it as a companion when using Hamilton's text.
Book Description
A matter-of-fact, accessible guide to the legal issues that affect general aviation pilots, this highly readable second edition adds case studies, covers important new ground, including FAA enforcement procedures, and makes understanding your rights and responsibilities easy.
Customer Reviews:
Over all a pretty good book.......2007-10-23
This book is a pretty easy read for considering the subject. The author does a great job keeping you interested by relating his own life stories to the subject of aviation law.

better than The Nanny Book.......2007-08-03
I picked up a used copy of this book and was wowed. The author presents a very balanced picture of hiring a nanny. She acknowledges that in some parts of the country, there are few legal nannies available. She acknowledges that some nannies are lazy or even dangerous, but that some families are hardly angels to work for, either. As a nanny, I felt that the author really respected the work I do. I gave this book to my bosses with no regrets; I told them it was SO much better than The Nanny Book, which I had bought because it was the only in-print book I could find. Highly recommended, and honestly, not that out of date for being nine years old.
Great addition to any nanny or nanny employers bookshelf.......2000-07-11
The Safe Nanny Handbook is a great reference tool for those who seek to employ a nanny or for nannies looking to add to their professional library. The book is filled with answers to many questions parents have when looking for a nanny and takes the reader through a logical step-by step process to finding the right nanny for their family. It provides personal real-life stories as well as a question and answer section that provide great insight. It also has a nice resource guide at the end that includes sample forms and helpful wesites.

Not a biography in the true sense of the word.......2007-03-06
I was looking for a biography of Bruce Springsteen so read this one. This is a critique of Springsteen's albums, songs and shows. It does tell you when he was born and goes into some details about his first bands, including who was in them. But if you're looking for an in-depth study of what Bruce Springsteen did that made him "The Boss," you won't find it here. Marsh's theories about Rock, Punk, Pop and Disco are a highly personalized POV driven largely from the perspective of exactly when he grew up. Historically, it is easy to disagree with him. Most of this book is a psudopsychological study of what he thinks Springsteen was talking about in each album and many songs up to and including "Darkness At the Edge of Town." If you love Springsteen, as I do, you'll no doubt find this interesting at least as far as you agree with Marsh. But if you want to know the family dynamics that drove Springsteen, the real issues around his short-lived college career, the exact circumstance around his traumatic motorcycle accident, how he learned to play guitar and how he learned to sing as he does, the whole story around his gigs at The Stone Pony, how he learned to command a stage, any depth to his personality, talent, and interactive behavior, you will not find them here. This "biography" is a lot more about what Dave Marsh thinks about Bruce Springsteen than it is about Springsteen, himself. When you consider the depth of detail a writer like David McCullough can raise about people dead 100 years, am I expecting too much to want that kind of detail about a living person? Personally, I don't think so.
Marsh's best Springsteen book.......2006-02-16
Okay, I'll be the first to admit that Dave Marsh has a Springsteen goo-goo, but "Born To Run", which I believe is his first book on Bruce, suffers quite a bit less for it than the books that followed. Here, Marsh did a nice job of describing Springsteen's childhood and early adulthood and didn't have quite as much time and space to worship. I bought this book as a beach read in 1984, and for a while I found myself referring back to it fairly regularly, but since reading the others in Marsh's Springsteen line-up, I've kind of retired it to the status of fondly remembered relic. Bruce just isn't the same anymore either.
Infectious but flawed........2002-06-11
June 10, 2002
In `Born To Run', biographer Dave Marsh successfully
immerses the reader in the origin and background of
both Bruce Springteen and the Jersey Shore of the
sixties and seventies. Some might chafe at the
occasionally purple prose (and praise), but Marsh's
tendency (not always forgivable) towards hyperbole
and emotionalism is indicative of the genuinely
live-or-die-with-Rock-And-Roll mandate by which its
subjects once lived their lives.
Particularly strong is the first half of the book,
wherein Marsh effectively paints New Jersey's
familial sixties Rock And Roll scene, the sort of
rebellious regional musical brewing pot that has
reinvented itself repeatedly across the continent
in any number of regions over the last thirty years.
The difference here is that Bruce's was the first
generation of working class youths to grow up in the
shadow of Elvis, and the Beatles, and Motown, and
rock's first great era. To these kids, Rock And Roll
was more than just something interesting to listen to
on your phonograph before supper. It was a revelation,
almost a religion.
Once the scene shifts to the late seventies and the
music industry, Marsh's take on things skews further.
His deification of Springsteen seems to be based on
little more than Bruce's having managed to not grow
a pot belly, "sell out", beat up his girlfriend, or
get busted for drugs. (Although, admittedly, that
does put the man in rare company for the times.)
The companion book to this effort, `Glory Days', isn't
too interesting, but `Born To Run', whether or not you
dig Bruce's music, packs a potent punch. As a glimpse
into an age of innocence and passion, it's inspiring
and re-readable . . .
. . . and it'll make you want to start a band and hit
the road.
For Any Fan of the Boss Who Likes to Read.......2002-04-21
From his early days as an anonymous cover band guitarist on the Jersey Shore in the 60's, to this tag as the 2nd coming of Bob Dylan, to his triumph on the covers of Time and Newsweek, to his protracted legal battles with his manager, to finally balancing commercial success and artistic integrity on the 1980 double LP 'The River', "Born to Run" covers Bruce Springsteen's career from the 70's as he emerged as one of rock's brightest stars.
Dave Marsh portrays Springsteen as nothing short of a rock god - a visionary whose singular focus on his music carried him to the top of the rock heirarchy, who cared way more about personal and artistic integrity than he ever did about making a buck, whose whose songwriting talent was so great he never wrote a bad song, and whose worst act (other than taking too long to make his albums)was to pull an Axl Rose and dive into the audience to stop a photographer (an ex-girlfriend no less) from taking unauthorized pics at a No Nukes concert.
Aside from Marsh's penchant for placing the Boss on a pedastal, there are alot of intersting facts, tidbits, stories and analysis of the music that make it an enjoyable if not quite easy read. If you are a fan or even interested in the Boss, this is an essential read.
Too Much Hero-Worship to be Objective.......2002-02-08
Dave Marsh may be THE most pompous writer to ever cover popular music, and he is completely blind to his own prejudices. He is incapable of defending his analysis, but rather hands out his opinions with an air that utterly dismisses any thought that they might be anything short of proven fact.
In Springsteen, Marsh has a subject on which he is absolutely incapable of objectivity. According to Marsh, Springsteen has never written, much less recorded, a weak song. Marsh's attempt to assign profound meaning to mediocrities such as "Drive All Night" and "The Price You Pay" would be funny if not offered with such smug seriousness.
That said, the book offers much good early biographical information, even if it is very one-sided. However, an artist like Springsteen deserves the attention of a writer willing to be objective about the subject.

Book Description
Few lives shed more light on the complex relationship between Jews and Christians during and after the Holocaust--or provide a more moving portrait of courage--than Oswald Rufeisen's. A Jew passing as a Christian in occupied Poland, Rufeisen worked as translator for the German police--the
very people who rounded up and murdered the Jews--and repeatedly risked his life to save hundreds from the Nazis. In this gripping biography, Nechama Tec, a widely acclaimed writer on the Holocaust, recounts Rufeisen's remarkable story.
A youth of seventeen when World War II began, Rufeisen joined the exodus of Poles who fled the approaching German army. Tec vividly describes how Rufeisen used his ability to speak fluent German to pass as half German and half Polish in Mir, where he came to serve as translator and personal
secretary to the German in charge of the gendarmerie. As he carried out his duties--reading death sentences to prisoners, swearing in new police officers before a portrait of Hitler--he earned the trust and affection of the German commander, yet lived in constant fear of discovery. He used his
position to pass secret information to Jews and Christians about impending "aktions" and to sabatoge Nazi plans. Most notably, he thwarted the annihilation of the Mir ghetto by arming hundreds of doomed Jews and organizing their escape, and saved an entire Belorussian village from destruction.
Denounced, Rufeisen escaped and found shelter in a convent, where he converted to Catholicism. Though a pacifist, he spent the rest of the war fighting in a Russian partisan unit.
After the war, Father Daniel (as he is now known) became a priest and a Carmelite monk. Identifying himself as a Christian Jew and an ardent Zionist, he moved to Israel, where he challenged the Law of Return in a case that reached the High Court and attracted international attention. Today he
continues to devote himself to bridging the gap between Christians and Jews.
In the Lion's Den offers a stirring portrait of a Jewish rescuer during the Holocaust and its aftermath, illuminating the intricate connections between good and evil, cruelty and compassion, and Judaism and Christianity.
Customer Reviews:
Amazing. Un-Put-Down-Able. Must Be Read. .......2007-07-29
"In the Lion's Den: The Life of Oswald Rufeisen" may be the most amazing, gripping book I've read. On many pages I was gasping or crying; my heart was pounding, my gut, churning. Oswald Rufeisen is one of the most unforgettable human beings I've ever encountered in the pages of a book. That this book is not more widely read, known, and available is unfortunate, to say the least.
Had this book been fiction, not only would I have never been able to accord it willing suspension of disbelief, I would have protested its publication. The story is that outlandish.
Oswald Rufeisen was born to an undistinguished couple. His mother was an old maid; an apparent arranged marriage wed her to a younger, distant cousin. The family was poor and often in debt. They lived in a provincial backwater. Their first child died in infancy. The second child, Oswald, was short, unobtrusive, and not especially handsome.
Oswald's family's life changed forever, along with millions of others, on September 1, 1939, when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. The Rufeisen family hit the road, along with other evacuees. His parents, too exhausted to go on, stopped. Oswald would discover, after the war, that his parents probably were murdered in Auschwitz.
Oswald and his brother had begun their escape from Nazis in southwest Poland; they kept moving east and north, to Lwow, now in Ukraine, and then to Wilno, now in Lithuania.
This region, the "kresy," was a site of deadly crossfire. As Germans advanced from the West, Soviets advanced from the East. Lithuanians, Ukrainians, and Belorussians felt sometimes deadly hostility toward Poles. Nazis and Soviets did all they could to divide and conquer. Jews, of course, were targeted for complete extermination.
Eventually, through a series of incredible coincidences, Oswald Rufeisen, a Jewish teenager escaping the Nazis, adrift in this terrifying ocean of conflict, became a Jewish slave laborer for Nazis, an SS interpreter, the organizer of a Ghetto revolt and escape, a forest-dwelling partisan, a Catholic monk, and then priest, and, finally, he would make aliyah to Israel, and thereby challenge the Law of Return and concepts of both Jewish identity and the nature of Christianity.
The book does not depict Rufeisen as someone seeking adventure or heroism; in fact, author Tec reports he resisted publicity. Rather, fate seems to be a palpable force in his life. When he was a slave laborer, cobbling shoes for Nazis who threatened him with death were he ever to get sick and stop being productive, a Polish peasant passing in a wagon made eye contact with him. That peasant invited him onto his wagon, warned him that the Nazis were murdering all Jews, and invited him to hide out on the peasant's farm.
Through that unsolicited rescue, Rufeisen eventually began to pass as a German. One event followed another, and finally he became the right-hand-man of the Nazi in charge of eliminating Jews from the district. Photos of Rufeisen reveal a boy with marked Semitic features, and, in fact, people were constantly calling him out as Jewish, and yet his German was so fluent, and his manners so reflective of German culture, that even those who met him face to face would, in later years, remark, "Oh, Oswald could pass as a German because he was tall, blond, and Nordic looking." Even a visit to a public bath, where a certain giveaway feature of Jewish manhood was on full display, did not ruin his disguise.
That fate seemed to play a major role in his life is not to belittle Rufeisen's heroism. Again, though very much not the stereotypical dashing or vainglorious action hero, Rufeisen's basic, common decency caused him to do heroic things, from carefully laying aside one piece of bread from his meager food ration so that he could share it with a friend, to organizing a ghetto revolt under the nose of his Nazi superior.
The moral jigsaw puzzle of the SS scenes boggles the mind. At one point, Rufeisen orchestrated the killing of a retarded boy in order to save many others from death. Rufeisen speaks of the genuine respect and affection between him and his Nazi superior.
After the war, Rufeisen became, not just a Christian, but a monk. This caused his Jewish friends much distress. While admitting his wartime heroism, and the excellent mind of a man who survived by his wits and was fluent in eight languages, they attributed his Christianity, alternately, to stupidity, mental illness, childishness, and other factors that reveal an unfortunate amount of prejudice.
Publication of this book lead to England's first war crimes trial. 84 year old Szymon Serafinowicz who immigrated to England after the war, was exposed by the book. He was judged to be suffering from Alzheimer's and was not tried.
A student of the Holocaust cannot help but notice this book's demonstration of a frequently mentioned principle: while it took only one non-Jew to denounce a Jew, it took many to support that Jew's survival. Again and again, Rufeisen was fed, sheltered, and protected by Poles, Belorussians, and others, though they know him to be Jewish, and though those who defied Nazi law faced death. In one instance, a fellow hitchhiker Rufeisen had just met stepped forward and vouched for his not being Jewish. Even a known collaborator declined to denounce Rufeisen. The man who eventually did hand Rufeisen over to Nazis was himself Jewish. Perhaps he thought this would protect him; it didn't; that man was almost immediately killed.
This anecdotal evidence jibes with Gunnar S. Paulsson's 2003 book, "Secret City: The Hidden Jews of Warsaw." Paulsson, child of a Holocaust survivor and a fellow at the US Holocaust Museum, argues that approximately seventy to ninety thousand non-Jewish Warsaw residents, in one way or another, made existence possible for 28,000 Jews who lived hidden lives in non-Jewish Warsaw during Nazi occupation.
Compelling story of a soul's journey through the holocaust........1999-07-25
It is seldom that one can view the depth of a human soul written by such a talented author. The book reads like a novel but has the pull of truth. I found it difficult to put down and wanted to share the incredible experience with others. It is worth the time to find a copy of the book. But, I warn you, you will want to own the book after reading it.
