An amazing tale of adventure!!!.......2006-03-31

The subtitle of this book really sums it up: The Extraordinary Life and Adventures of Miles and Beryl Smeeton. Beryl was born in 1905. Miles was born in 1906. Their early lives were straight out of Rudyard Kipling. They both followed family tradition and were part of the British overseas military life. Beryl was not a shrinking violet. Her brother is quoted in the book as saying "she always regretted that she hadn't been born a man, and that was really what she was trying to make up for all her life. In everything she did- sports, riding, steeple-chasing- her motto was 'Anything you can do, I can do better.' She had this tremendous urge to surpass... She was quite fearless and would never rest or relax." Early in life she married a British officer and travelled with him to India. Beryl had many daring adventures in spite of the expectations of the time. She met and started an affair with Miles, a very tall and handsome younger officer, and her first husband let her go to pursue the life of adventure which she was destined for. Together, Beryl and Miles saw the end of the old British colonial system. The book contains fascinating stories of the "Lancers", which evolved to a tank corps. Miles learned to drive a tank and fly an airplane before he learned to drive an automobile. Beryl travelled extensively, often hiking up mountains in exotic locales, even after she gave birth to her daughter. The baby was lugged around by lackeys and natives, and often left behind to survive as best she could. Part of the more amusing stories in the book are about how cavalier a mother and how horribly bad a cook Beryl was. After Miles left the military, the two set out to explore the world on a sailing vessle, a whole new chapter to their life of adventure. Even in old age, the two continued to live remarkable lives. This book is really just riveting. It is one of the most exciting adventures I have ever read.

I saw High Endeavors first recommended by a couple of sailing magazines and picked up a copy.

The book goes far beyond a sailing adventure, which is a component of this couple's lives but by no means the whole story.

Miles Clark, the author, is the stepson of Miles and Beryl Smeeton, the subjects of the book. He has told this story with as much accuracy as records and personal experience would provide, along with the affection of a loving son who knew this story had to be told.

It's really about Beryl. She walks/trains/hitches across India, through the Middle East, Europe and back t the UK. In the 30's!

Later she decides that she has to ride horseback through Patagonia, by herself.

During WW II they served separately in Asia, ending up together in Burhma.

It is only after Miles retires from the Army that they bought a sailboat and set out for British Columbia.

Just an amazing story and it's true!

The book describes the interesting lives of Miles and Beryl Smeeton who spent their lives travelling across several continents, fighting in wars, sailing around the world and protecting endangered species in Canada. This is not a book to be missed. The biggest problem with the book is that you will begin to feel that you haven't really lived a full existence!

Highly recommended- I wasn't sure this book would take my fancy, I had read travelogues before, but this novel and the adventures of the principal characters are so awe-inspiring and humor filled that the book is a must read. The quality of the travels, combined with the history that was being made during this period make the book informative and gripping. As amazing as it is- along with the 2nd world war, circumnavigation, and treks through all of the worlds continents, there is a lovely romance that is not contrived or annoying in the slighest. The details on the topic of independent contractors........2003-08-15

You will find a general treatment of the topic of Independent Contractors (IC) in other Nolo guides but if you want a definitive and detailed guide, this is the book for you. All the way from templates of general independent contractor forms on CD-ROM to a thorough analysis of the various aspects of working with Independent Contractors, this book does a great job of discussing in plain English what every Small Business Owner needs to know. There is another Nolo guide on just the different contracts you could use for this purpose but this book contains most of those types of forms.

The book starts out with an introductory definition of an Independent Contractor and explains the benefits and risks of hiring one. The next natural step for every employer is to go through the process of determining the worker status and federal payroll taxes. After discussing this topic, the book explains the Safe Harbor Protection which is the process an IRS auditor is supposed to follow in determining if your classification of Independent Contractors should be questioned (something along these lines).

There are 3 chapters devoted to IRS specific topics - IRS Audits, tax rules for specific workers, and the IRS test for worker status. State payroll taxes, Workers' Compensation, hiring household workers, and labor/anti-discrimination laws are addressed after that.

The book then discusses the topic of Intellectual Property ownership in this context of Independent Contractors. This is followed by a few chapters on sample IC agreements, procedures for hiring ICs, how to avoid government audits etc. My favorite chapter is the Chapter 13: Intellectual Property Ownership as this can get very tricky if you aren't careful. In my business, this also happens to be one of the biggest risks in hiring ICs for our work instead of employees.

Overall, this is an excellent book that explains in plain English (as Nolo always does) of the intricacies involved in working with ICs. Of course, as some large corporations in the computer industry found out, it isn't that straight forward. So this book only helps you do some of the right things and avoid the obvious problems but there is no substitute for a good lawyer who can handle the more difficult issues.

A true must for any collector, serious or beginner alike.

Filled with great pictures & loads of information as a resource book you just can't fault this item. Doesn't matter if you collect action figures, cloth badges, books, posters...whatever...this book has the lot.

If you are only going to do yourself one favour this year, make sure you buy yourself a copy of this book.

Star Wars - The Return on the Jedi...........2006-02-17

The book is a marvelous resource of information regarding the value of virtually every Star Wars Collectible imaginable. As the author warns, it is a guidline document and so should be treated as suggestion and not absolute in the values listed. As such, it is a tremendous compendium of useful information...with a few errors. As an example, I have an item that appears to have been missed and so its value isn't addressed. There is also an entry error involving an erroneous photographic reference. And in a book this extensive, it's understandable. It is a great reference document and I am glad to have a copy. I recommend it highly!

A Great Resource and How-To Guide.......2007-06-25

Modeling spacecraft, both historical and fictional, is a niche within the modeling world. This book speaks to those interested in that niche. It covers such diverse topics various modeling materials, scrounging to make what is desired from what is available, painting, decaling and, especially, sources for obscure materials and kits.

This is dedicated primarily to static models and not the flying ones but can be useful for the latter crowd as well.

It is a British publication but is applicable for all.

Building Spacecraft - Do it!.......2007-04-27

Scale Spacecraft Modelling is a must have for anyone interested in modelling. It has something for everyone; whether its paper (or card)modeling all the way to the specialty kits made from resin. This is neither a beginner not advanced book, but written so every modeler no matter what their expertise will get something from it. Besides chapters dealing with tools needed, plastic, card and resin models; chapters also include weathering your kit, building dioramas, and scratchbuilding a futuristic Mars habitat ship.
It is a natural segue from his Creating Space: The Story of the Space Age Through Models (Apogee Books Space Series) book. Highly recommended.

Go for launch!.......2007-04-07

Matt Irvine has produced a great companion piece to his previous effort "Creating Space" from Apogee books.
As a model builder I loved how he explored various mediums from Plastic to paper to resin models of our various favorite space ships. His exploration into the best and newest models out there is perfect, and what he did in his explanations to improve upon the models and their displays was great. (I loved what he did with the Apollos!) It was uncanny that we both did dioramas about simular vehicles like the V-2's at White Sands, New Mexico.
Maybe it is a space geek thing!
Highly recommended to all spaceship modelers!

Outstanding in every way.......2007-03-25

This is the best book ever published on the subject of scale spacecraft modelling. It is well written, very well illustrated, and very much up to date. Many congrats to Mr. Irvine for the production of this fine work.

I was looking for a book with details on weathering and all other kinds of advanced effects you could apply to your models. Something apart from the basics, I decided on this book because it looked like what I was looking for, but it turned out to be pretty basic with hardly any pictures of each model created, especially the building process. Each model built in this book has a max of 4 pics and not detailed at all. Not a great book, I've seen better.

I last built a few models literally thity years ago. For some reason I had an itch to relive my childhood . I could not find a good book for beginners. I didn't really like the Kalmbach books for various reasons. This book didn't have any reviews, but I thought I would just give it a whirl. I knew absolutely nothing when I began and I had no idea that the industry had improved and changed so much. The book has 21 chapters and begins with the very basics. For example, I knew what scale means but not when choosing a model. It is explained what scale might be preferred for a particlular subject and why. Also, Mr. Stanton has a very nice conversational way of writing and it's as if a friend is explaining things to you. He defines what sprue, flash, sink marks and ejector pin marks are and how are why they oocur. Something very useful is how Mr. Stanton tells you who the majors players in the industry are or what products are available and why he prefers certain ones. It is very helpful until you begin to develop your own expertise and personal biases. He also recommends specific tools needed to begin modelling and what might be useful in the future. A good part of the book shows you how to make models. He begins with a suggestion for a first model. Included is how to use fillers, mask/tape, paint, apply decals and even how to paint a canopy frame in three layers to give it a realistic 3-D appearance. Later, sequential projects show more advanced techniques such as washing and dry-brushing, subtle weathering techniques and more advance colour schemes. These clear instructions are illustrated with precise colour photographs; he never leaves you guessing. Other useful chapters discuss resin, etched and white metal parts as well as after-market kits, vac-formed and multi-media kits (I was not at all familiar with these). For me , I really enjoyed the chapter on how to model biplanes as I am very interested in WWI aircraft. His last project chapter is on super detailing a Hawker Sea Hurricane Mk.IIc operated by 824Sq FAA from the HMS "Striker". Mr. Stanton used a "donor" kit from Hasegawa, conversion parts by Model Design Construction, cockpit from Czech Master Kits, Aires resin for the control surfaces and Kendall's resin Hurricane flaps. I include the last part to illustrate that book is probably a good source for the intermediate modeller as well as the rank beginner.

The only marginal negative is the occurrence of -about a half-dozen small editing mistakes which do not detract from the book. I would have liked to see just a small section on painting figures and perhaps even a little on how to get started on dioramas. Overall, this is just a superb book and takes you from knowing nothing to developing confidence and some real modelling skills.

The Nice were Keith Emerson's band prior to superstardom with Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Formed as a backing band for soul singer PP Arnold, The Nice went on to lay the foundations for what would become progressive rock. Their debut LP mixed rock with jazz and classical music, but it was their hard rock reinvention of Leonard Bernstein's "America" that took them into the U.S. and U.K. charts, and influenced their biggest fan, Jimi Hendrix, to reinterpret "The Star Spangled Banner."

Solid Bio of a Neglected Band - A bit Anti- ELP.......2002-12-11

The Nice were true orginals - in 1960's Britian awash with imitation blues bands and R & B [imitations], all of whom were crushed beneath the weight of the Fab Four, The Nice appeared from nowhere along this continum. Showcasing great musicianship and knowledge of Classical musical forms, the Nice were the missing link between Psychedelic mayhem and Progressive pandemonium.

Martyn Hanson gives us a complete run-down of each member of this revolutionary band, and details how they came together ostensibly as P.P. Arnold's back-up band. Original manager Andrew Loog Oldham,[inespensively], needed an opening act, so The Nice stepped forward. Hanson show how lamentable management skills of the mentally-unbalanced Oldham put pressures on the band to constantly tour since they never saw a penny of royalties from any of their albums.

The Nice began with four players, and almost according to the [strange] script of LSD-laced guitarists, Davy O'List became more and more unbalanced and was let go, reducing The Nice to a power trio, but giving Keith Emerson more influence. Throughout the remainder of the 60's The Nice produced ambitious, if poorly recorded albums, and built a fan base.

Emerson wanted better players, certaintly a better singer than Lee Jackson, so he dumped the Nice to hook up with "his heaviness" Greg Lake and Carl Palmer to form ELP, a higher-tech version of The Nice, although Emerson claimed he wanted to do something different. Hanson is critical of ELP's work, but I can't imagine Jackson or Davidson playing on say "Tarkus" or "Brain Salad Surgery." Emerson snakebit his former bandmates when he broke up The Nice, and they both have struggled unfairly. Yes destroyed their second chance of a breakthrough when they recruited Patrick Moraz from Refugee to replace Rick Wakeman.

Hanson's book is well-written, full of information, anecdotal, and appraisals with a slight critical edge that gives his recounting of the rise, fall, and rebirth of this seminal 1960's band. A strong slice of rock history, and a solid addition to anyone who is interested in Keith Emerson, 1960's British rock, the Nice, or Prog in general.
