Book Description

A brilliant young historian follows the odyssey of Mussolini's body in an original exploration of the history and legacy of Italian Fascism Bullet-ridden, spat on, butchered bloody: this was the fate of Il Duce, strung up beside his dead mistress in a Milan square, as reviled in death as he was adored in life. With Italy's defeat in World War II, the cult of Benito Mussolini's physical self was brought to its grotesque denouement by a frenzied, jeering crowd of thousands-one eerily similar to the cheering throngs that had once roared their approval beneath Il Duce's balcony. In this groundbreaking work, Sergio Luzzatto traces the fortunes of the Fascist dictator's body: from his charisma, virility, and magnetic domination of Fascist parades, to his humiliating execution, the ugly display of his remains, and beyond. Buried, exhumed, stolen, and hidden for ten years, Il Duce's corpse was finally laid to rest, a shrine for fanatical followers. Through this pursuit, Luzzatto shows how in a totalitarian state the body of the ruler comes to incarnate the nation. And from the indignities visited on Mussolini's corpse, Luzzatto crafts a subtle social and intellectual history of a country struggling to become a republic and free itself from the thrall of Fascism. Elegantly written and stunningly conceived, alive with never-before-published letters, diaries, and reports, The Body of Il Duce cuts a new and compelling path through twentieth-century history.

4 out of 5 stars Corpse as a political football.......2005-11-12

Sergio Luzzatto's The Body of Il Duce tells an interesting story of what happened to Benito Mussolini after he died. Its a strange story how his death and corpse became a political football during the post World War II Italy, as left wing, right wing and moderate political parties tries to use Mussolini's death and corpse as a political leverage against each other.

Outside of some initial background material, the real story basically began with Mussolini getting executed and hanging upside down at Piazzlae Loreto in Milan and its ends with Mussolini finally getting a decent burial at the family cemetary in Predappio, Italy. But between the two events, tells the messy tale of Italian politics at its worst.

Author explained the brutal nature of Mussolini's death, fate of corpse as it hung upside down like a side of beef and the quest so many people had for its body after it was cut down. It may be that the war have compromised the national psyche of the Italian people. Of the three Axis powers, only the Italians who cheered Mussolini when he was victorious, abandoned him totally when the war turned against them. The freckle nature of the people led to a civil war between the Italians as well as with the Germans that created a brutal atmosphere that lingered on after the war. That was made painfully clear by the author as the same people who cheered Mussolini during Italy's days in the sun, hypercritically abused his body after his death. The book explored the nature of this treatment and its consequences.

Overall, a well written book about a subject matter that haven't been explored in detail by the English speaking world. Its fitting that an Italian author choose to explored this event that in some way, shed new lights on Benito Mussolini's influence on Italian people and nation.

      Book Description

Melody Webb's reflections on her twenty-five-year-long career in the National Park Service is an insider's account of a public bureaucracy. As a woman, she was working in a male-dominated agency; as an idealist, she attempted to champion the wise use of the national parks in a pragmatic political agency.

Webb's career began in Alaska during President Gerald Ford's administration. She helped set up the mechanism that permitted Alaskan Natives to claim up to 2 million acres of federal land to preserve culturally significant areas. Following a dozen years of historic preservation work in Alaska and New Mexico, Webb spent the second half of her tenure in management positions. She served as superintendent at the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park and then as assistant superintendent, in charge of all park operations at Grand Teton National Park. During this period the Park Service was faced with conflicting mandates: there was a growing demand for recreational land use and, at the same time, environmental requirements and tight budgets limited the NPS's options.

Webb's frankness about the day-to-day politics within an institution that many Americans feel should be above politics make this book an eye opener for historians and anyone who has an interest in the National Park System.

Melody Webb's reflections on her twenty-five-year career in the National Park Service is an insider's account of a public bureaucracy.

5 out of 5 stars The National Parks as You've Never Seen Them Before.......2007-02-18

Melody Webb was a pioneering female in the National Park Service during the latter decades of the 20th century; woman superintendents and upper-level managers are now commonplace in that agency, but they definitely were not then. Her memoir deserves a wide readership on that account alone. But this is not a women's lib story. It is an insider's frank, critical, and also interesting account of office politics in an organization we seldom associate with offices or politics. Better yet, Webb is an engaging writer, who does not take herself too seriously, and whose native sense of humor comes through on every page. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the parks or the Park Service, in the changing places of women in recent decades, and above all for anybody who simply loves a good read about interesting people doing interesting jobs in the most interesting places in the world. Five stars, and six if they had 'em.

5 out of 5 stars Role Model for Young Women.......2004-04-11

Melody Webb's book offers two messages: one, we are loving our national parks to death, and two, women have a role in managing them. She tells about her experiences as a public historian and as supervisor in several national parks with the purpose of elevating awareness of how management practices and use by visitors threaten these national treasures. While involved in work previously assigned to men, she never wavers from a feminine introspection and awareness of the impact of her personality and temperament on her professional life. She proves that a woman can succeed in roles traditionally assigned to men. This book is a must-read for young women who dream of entering professions once thought of as being open only to men.

4 out of 5 stars She Had a Nice Run.......2004-04-10

Melody Webb's years in the National Park Service certainly was an adventure. Imagine spending your summer canoeing down Alaska's Yukon River in search of abandoned gold rush camps with a virtual stranger as your guide or backpacking alone up the steep and treacherous Chilkoot Trail, battling hypothermia in the icy winds of the summit. As a park superintendent, how would you handle politicians, irate ranchers, active environmental groups, diseased elk and buffalo, re-introduction of the wolf to Yellowstone National Park, or a grizzly bear attack on a popular hiking trail? Melody Webb has experienced all that and more in her twenty-five-year career in the National Park Service and presents an articulate, informative, and well-paced account of her adventures in the great outdoors.

5 out of 5 stars The real story.......2004-04-01

Melody Webb's stunningly candid account of life in the National Park Service is by far the best memoir in the recent history of the agency. She tells it like it is, with candor and frankness, showing both the ideals that make the Park Service wonderful and the political murkiness that makes management nigh on impossible. Webb's picture makes sense; she is a close observer who is fair in her depictions of how the agency operates and of how those in power use their cachet. Shed tells a cogent and understandable story, free from the biases of casual observers and the axe-grinding of other participants. Well-written and well told, this is best memoir about the National Park Service that I have ever read - and I've read them all! This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to know how the national parks are run.

5 out of 5 stars Inside the National Park Service.......2004-03-31

As bureau historian for the National Park Service from 1982 to 2000, I scrutinized every published memoir by former agency leaders. Melody Webb's account is unique in offering the perspective not of a director or other top official but of a historian and superintendent who dealt more closely with park resources and visitors. It offers remarkably candid and revealing insights into how our national parks are managed and the challenges faced by those managing them. It presents as well the particular opportunities and obstacles confronted by a woman advancing in a traditional male-dominated bureaucracy. Those seeking a better behind-the-scenery depiction of the parks and the park service will not soon find one.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book.......2007-01-16

I purchased the book since my employer explained that I will become an independent contractor for 2007. The book explained everything about being a contractor and how to stay in line with paying the taxes, how to protect my self employed status, what deductions I can take, and what forms and agreements I should use. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone who wants to understand the world of self employment.

5 out of 5 stars All the legal tips, tricks and traps explained.......2006-04-20

Plenty of books impart the basics of how to work independently - but too few include all the legal tips, tricks and traps involved. WORKING FOR YOURSELF: LAW & TAXES FOR INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS, FREELANCERS & CONSULTANTS covers everything from setting appropriate fees and understanding how and when taxes are paid to limiting liability and getting paid. Record-keeping processes are simplified with sample logs and entry advice, chapters on how the IRS defines an independent contractor versus a paid employee are essential keys to keeping independent status, and advice on pricing and insurance offer key strategy-oriented tips and approaches. A 'must' for any who would work independently.

4 out of 5 stars Great straghtforward information and advice.......2005-09-17

I recently a started an S corp for my software contracting. The book is helpful and worth the price. It won't answer EVERY question you will have, but you probably should talk to a CPA for those anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Another Nolo Press Winner.......2005-07-28

My husband is an independent photographer, so the Nolo Press books are great for him, geared as they are to all those wishing to handle all the paperwork for themselves, instead of the usual array of lawyers, accountants, etc. He keeps it as a reference book and can easily turn to whatever subject he needs more information on. Well-written and easy to understand, as are all Nolo books, these books are wonderful to review periodically.

5 out of 5 stars Straighforward intro to the legal aspects of freelancing.......2004-05-04

A potential employer asked that I incorporate my freelancing business before they start sending me jobs. I wanted to do some research on the pros/cons of incorporating, what kind of start-ups costs this would entail, and what kind of corporation I should be. At first, the whole process of incorporating sounded like a huge money burden on my part--with filing fees and taxes--but this book has helped me sort out the issues and provided detailed information about the different ways to incorporate--sole proprietorship, LLC, S-corps. Although I haven't yet decided which path I will take, this book has made the jump to freelancing, and self-incorporating, less scary.

Not only do I understand my choices better, but I also now understand the different structures for businesses and their tax responsibilities. Great distillation of information! The copies of tax forms in the back are also a great reference. Highly recommended.

                Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

                  Book Description

A house is a site, the bounds and focus of a community. It is also an artifact, a material extension of its occupants' lives. This book takes the Japanese house in both senses, as site and as artifact, and explores the spaces, commodities, and conceptions of community associated with it in the modern era.

As Japan modernized, the principles that had traditionally related house and family began to break down. Even where the traditional class markers surrounding the house persisted, they became vessels for new meanings, as housing was resituated in a new nexus of relations. The house as artifact and the artifacts it housed were affected in turn. The construction and ornament of houses ceased to be stable indications of their occupants' social status, the home became a means of personal expression, and the act of dwelling was reconceived in terms of consumption. Amid the breakdown of inherited meanings and the fluidity of modern society, not only did the increased diversity of commodities lead to material elaboration of dwellings, but home itself became an object of special attention, its importance emphasized in writing, invoked in politics, and articulated in architectural design. The aim of this book is to show the features of this culture of the home as it took shape in Japan.

                    Book Description

Humans perch homes in trees and float them in lakes; they build them to last for centuries and make them portable enough to carry on their backs; they look for design inspiration in the landscape, in the human body, and in flora and fauna. A Home in the World offers a deep perspective on home design by revealing how different cultures have handled the essential task of building houses that reflect their ideals and values. In a time when home improvement is all the rage, this book sheds light on other, more global, meanings of the word "home."

Authors Martine and Caroline Laffon lead us on a fascinating journey to distant lands to discover the enormous variety of vernacular and ethnographic domestic architecture. We explore a treehouse high atop a forest, boathouses in Thailand, a mud-and-wood fortress in Togo, a hut in Siberia, and an intricate latticework structure in India. Illustrated with 150 images of houses around the world, this extraordinary volume will have great appeal for those interested in architecture, design, cultural anthropology, and travel. AUTHOR BIO: Martine Laffon is editorial director at the French publishing house Le Seuil and the author of several books, both for adults and children. She was trained as a philosopher. Caroline Laffon writes documentary films and is the coauthor with her mother, Martine, of several publications on communities and traditions around the world.

                            Book Description

From the Jim Crow world of 1920s Greenville, South Carolina, to Greenwich Village's Cafe Society in the '40s, to their 1974 Grammy-winning collaboration on "Loves Me Like a Rock," the Dixie Hummingbirds have been one of gospel's most durable and inspiring groups. Now, Jerry Zolten tells the Hummingbirds' fascinating story and with it the story of a changing music industry and a changing nation. When James Davis and his high-school friends starting singing together in a rural South Carolina church they could not have foreseen the road that was about to unfold before them. They began a ten-year jaunt of "wildcatting," traveling from town to town, working local radio stations, schools, and churches, struggling to make a name for themselves. By 1939 the a cappella singers were recording their four-part harmony spirituals on the prestigious Decca label. By 1942 they had moved north to Philadelphia and then New York where, backed by Lester Young's band, they regularly brought the house down at the city's first integrated nightclub, Cafe Society. From there the group rode a wave of popularity that would propel them to nation-wide tours, major record contracts, collaborations with Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon, and a career still vibrant today as they approach their seventy-fifth anniversary. Drawing generously on interviews with Hank Ballard, Otis Williams, and other artists who worked with the Hummingbirds, as well as with members James Davis, Ira Tucker, Howard Carroll, and many others, The Dixie Hummingbirds brings vividly to life the growth of a gospel group and of gospel music itself.

Jerry Zolten, co-author of 'Speaking to an Audience' and writer for Living Blues magazine, has devoted his interest into the lives and music of The Dixie Hummingbirds. What would gospel be like today if not for the influence of singers like The Hummingbirds, Fairfield Four, Skylarks, Kings of Harmony, Radio Four, the Selahs among others? They brought to us the reality that gospel was poulated by every type of people you can name. All that travels the gospel road those that succeeded were the Dixie Hummingbirds for their spiritual qualities and their unique a-capella style. It was thier backbone and their success that kept them together until now. Before there was Rock-n-Roll there they were. They sang through history from the Depression, the World Wars, Korea and Vietnam and through the decades of changing pop culture. Now that perseverance and dedication rewarded them, this will be their 75th anniversary. They have their place in the American Music Hall of Fame.

This is their story that began in 1920s Greenville, S.C. to their 1974 Grammy winning song 'Love Me Like a Rock.' Others made popular during their long career are, 'Christian's Automobile,' 'Have a Little Talk With Jesus,' 'Ezekiel Saw the Wheel,' 'Two Little Fishes & Five Loaves of Bread,' 'Let's Go Out to The Programs,' 'Savior Don't Pass Me By,' 'Devil Can't Harm a Praying Man,' 'I've Been Born Again,' and 'Wonderful to Be Alive' among a long line of memorable songs. James Davis and his friends began singing in a rural church. Their next 10 years would be jaunting from town to town, working radio stations, schools and churches. By 1939, the a-capella songbirds recorded their 4-part harmony spirituals on Decca. By 1942, they moved to Philadelphia and then New York with the Lester Young band they brought down the house each night at the Café Society. For there they catapulted into nationwide tours, major revord contracts, collaborating with Stevie Wonder and Paul Simon. And they're still going stronger as ever. There are interviews of the artists who worked with the Hummingbirds. The book brings out the vivid life that shaped the gospel singers and gospel music. In the words of Ira Tucker, Sr. at the anniversary roast, he said, "There have been a lot of people that have turned their backs on us. But you know what? The man upstairs sits high and looks low. That's who we have our faith and trust in, is God Almighty. I'd like to say this to you. It wasn't the money that kept the Hummingbirds out there." In conclusion"....Don't think that we are finished. I'm glad not. AMEN. There are notes in the back of the book to further your search in Blues, Gospel, Jazz & Broadcasting with bibliography of books, articles, interviews, recordings & documentaries for more reading. n the subject of Blues, Gospel and those that influence the story of soul music, like Willie Dixon, Billie Holliday, Wynonie Harris, Mahalia Jackson and Josh White. 5 out of 5 stars Detailed and Shattering.......2000-10-25

Anus Mundi--1500 Days in Auschwitz/Birkenau is a detailed and shattering view of life in the death camps of the Holocaust. Unlike the writing of Elie Wiesel, Jean Amery, and to a lesser extent, Primo Levi, which is deeply and movingly introspective, Wieslaw Kielar details the brutalities of life in the camps with a simple objectivity that is unsparing in its directness. In this narrative, we learn nothing about Kielar prior to June 1940 and nothing about him after his liberation of the camps four years later. We do know he is Polish Catholic who occasionally prays, but other than that the book is devoid of religious, philosophical or political overtones.

The dozens of camp vignettes that the author has accumulated in this book are as sharp as the eye of a camera: brilliant, detailed, focused and memorable. The closest comparison in style would be Borowski, Kielar's tragic countryman. In each case, the strict lack of sentiment and intellectual elaboration serve only to heighten the horror and leave us with no doubt as to the authenticity of the recollections and their attendant suffering.

Although Kielar's misery was unrelieved, for all its deprivations, his fate was slightly easier that that of the Jewish prisoners. This is in no way meant to be disparaging. Kielar suffered more than his share of harsh blows, severe winters, starvation and infestation with lice and fleas. Although not a Jew, for Kielar, too, the brutalities of the sadistic Kapos were never far away. His memoir records a long season in hell that would have destroyed a lesser man.

Amidst this suffering and degradation, however, Kielar reveals that contacts with the civilian world outside of the camp were still possible for him, that he was entitled to receive packages from home, that correspondence with his family took place with a certain amount of regularity and most of all, that he did not live each day in fear of the ovens and gas chambers which were reserved for the arriving Jews. Those Jews whose lives were spared suffered a fate that proved, ultimately, to be harsher than that suffered by Kielar and the other Polish political prisoners.

This is an intimate and extremely well-written book about the horrors of the Holocaust and it contains a wealth of information. One must though, when reading, remember that there were qualitatively different orders of experience among the various inmates of the camps. Kielar could, at least, count on the fact that he had a chance of outlasting and overcoming the wretchedness. The Jews, however, were from the moment of their arrival, marked for certain death. If not immediately dispatched to the gas chamber, they were worked until death mercifully overtook them.

The acknowledgment of this distinction among the prisoners in no way detracts from the vividness or the pathos of Kielar's memoir of his 1500 days in hell. We must read and remember each survivor's story for its own unique reasons. In Kielar's case, the reasons are compelling enough to make this a first-class memoir in the annals of Holocaust literature.

5 out of 5 stars Striking memoir on life in Auschwitz/Birkenau........2000-05-24

If you only read one book about the holocaust, this should be it. Mr. Kielars memoir is the difinitive book on Auschwitz/Birkenau. This book is moveing, horrific and full of feeling. It goes beyond the documentation of events to the dreams, fears, and struggles of a human being in the face of one of the worst events in history. Anus Mundi gives a personal view of the people and events that shaped the concentration camp from those that helped ease suffering, to those who created it. Mr. Kielar shares not only the persecution of the Jews, but also the Gypsies, political prisoners, homosexuals, and more. This book is a beautifully detailed, extremely personal look at life and death in Auschwitz.
