Book Description
The nineteenth-century Métis politician and mystic Louis Riel has emerged as one of the most popular - and elusive - figures in Canadian culture. Since his hanging for treason in 1885, the self-declared David of the New World has been depicted variously as a traitor to Confederation; a French-Canadian and Catholic martyr; a bloodthirsty rebel; a pan-American liberator; a pawn of shadowy white forces; a Prairie political maverick; a First Nations hero; an alienated intellectual; a victim of Western industrial progress; and even a Father of Confederation.
Albert Braz synthesizes the available material by and about Riel, including film, sculpture, and cartoons, as well as literature in French and English, and analyzes how an historical figure could be portrayed in such contradictory ways. In light of the fact that most aesthetic representations of Riel bear little resemblance not only to one another but also to their purported model, Braz suggests that they reveal less about Riel than they do about their authors and the society to which they belong. The most comprehensive treatment of the representations of Louis Riel in Canadian literature, The False Traitor will be a seminal work in the study of this popular Canadian figure.

Louis Riel for Dummies.......2006-02-05
Riel, who led Metis rebellions in present-day Manitoba and Saskatchewan, is extremely important in Canadian history, but was repudiated by most Canadians (French-speakers were somewhat more sympathetic, though by no means unanimous) through WWII. Since then, more and more literature, art, and scholarship has treated Riel as a quintessentially embodiment the conflicts and contradictions of Canadian history and nationhood. The phrase, "fasle traitor," is meant to exemplify Riel's
Braz has done an excellent job of collected many diverse documents, including illustrations whose presence enliven this volume. He also lays out the various "Riels": traitor, lunatic, visionary, cultural mediator, and so forth. The argument suffers a bit from the need to treat so much material; at times it seems to descend into pure plot summary. However, it belongs on the bookshelf of all those interested in Riel, either historically or as a cultural icon.

Lovely Little Friend To Brighten Your Day.......2007-08-10
This little guy makes a wonderful travel companion, or he'll wait patiently on your desk or dresser. I especially like his friendly appearance and small stature.
He's solid, made of some kind of plaster-ish composite material.
If you need a miniature friend, this is the guy for you.
Gnome in Europe.......2007-03-31
My boyfriend and I took this little guy on our recent trip to Europe and he was awesome, very portable and handy. He makes photos much much more entertaining. Though I do caution that if you put him down in a train station in Rome and then get distracted, it is very devastating when you forget him there. Good thing I got another one!
Wee Little Bit Of Awesome.......2006-12-18
Just got mine in the mail yesterday. Carry it around with me for good luck. It's very adorable, and quite delightful. All of my friends think I'm absolutely insane for carrying a garden gnome around with me, but psh to them, I'm in love with the little guy.
So Cute!.......2006-03-23
My friend & I both got one of these for Christmas and I love it. It's too cute to put outside though I keep my in my kitchen window.
Wee Bit O' Cheer.......2006-02-03
The mail just arrived and lo and behold! A package for me from my best friend. Inside to be found was a small fellow in a box. Joy! Alas, my very own gnome visitor. I have long wanted to entertain such a guest. My best friend, sharing a fondness for gnomes herself kindly sent the surprise of the trial-size wee gnome. The booklet included is fun to read to educate yourself in the wee gnome tradition. If you are seeking to cultivate this interest with small steps you may enjoy a wee gnome, too!

Customer Reviews:
When I die I'm taking this with me!.......2007-07-21
Others have given excellent detailed descriptions of this book. I'll simply say that I've owned it since it first came out and it has given me years of enjoyment. Anyone who loves history and/or quilts would find it to be both a tremendous resource and a great reading experience. I have a very large quilting book collection including most of Barbara Brackman's books. This is the one book I would never part with.
This book needs to be republished!
The super information makes up for the lack of visual appeal.......2001-12-08
This book could use a lot more pictures. It is a great source of written information, but does not provide much help in the visual identification of calico fabrics. Eileen Jahnke Trestain's book is much more useful in providing pictures, but Trestain's book does not come close to providing the written documentation and depth of discussion that Barbara Brackman does in Clues in the Calico.
I use both books and they are great companion guides for solving the mysteries presented when you attempt to identify the age of old fabrics, especially in old crazy quilts. HOWEVER, in general, I find I refer to the Trestain book more often than the Brackman book.
Clues in the Calico by Barbara Brackman.......2001-10-24
This book is essential for anyone who wants to learn about antique quilts. Comprehensive information about textile technology, pattern dissemination, and chronology of stylistic influences on quiltmaking in the United States presented by the leading authority on quilt history.
Best Quilt Book I Own.......2001-06-07
I purchased this book several years ago in preparation to becoming a certified quilt appraiser, It proved to be invaluable. I have used it so much it is literally falling apart. I have highlighted it's pages until it looks like like they were colored to begin with. I consider it to be the best guide for fabric identification on the market. I own many quilt books on lots of subjects, but this is my favorite.

Be it spring, summer, fall, or winter, the start of a new season marks a time of change and growth. In 8 Seasons of Parenthood, co-authors Barbara C. Unell, founder of Twins magazine, and family psychologist Jerry Wyckoff, M.D., explore the very predictable cycles of parenthood, showing how each waxing and waning season shapes individuals and families. Beginning with pregnancy (a time when moms-to-be are the "celebrities" and their husbands are the "roadies"), the authors use familiar examples to describe the physical and psychological changes adults encounter throughout parenthood--be it the new mom who laments her lost waistline and freedom; the father of a teen who suddenly needs to revisit his bygone youth; or the lonely couple who can't face eating at the family dinner table once their children are off to college.
Wykoff and Unell succeed in providing a thorough guide for parents in any stage of the child-rearing game, taking care to share a diversity of circumstances from various socioeconomic sectors as well as the experiences of special-needs families in which a child's developmental disabilities prevent parents from reaching the final seasons. A final, thought-provoking chapter is dedicated to parents who find themselves in need of being "parented" by their own children. --Liane Thomas
Book Description
Every parent knows that the experience of raising children changes us profoundly, in ways often unforeseen. And yet never before has a book examined how and why the stages of our children's development affect us so deeply, altering not only our jobs, our lifestyles, and our relationships with our spouses and parents, but the very essence of how we think of ourselves as individuals and adults.
For the first time, parenting experts Barbara Unell and Jerry Wyckoff offer a new vision of the family journey -- what it means for us as parents and individuals as we evolve in tandem with every new change brought about by our children's growth. Like Passages, Gail Sheehy's groundbreaking study of the stages of adult maturity, this book defines for readers the eight clear stages of an adult parent's life, illuminating the defining moments, key conflicts, important lessons and signposts of each stage of his or her evolution, from early parenthood to old age.
The eight seasons of parenthood are:
Celebrity: The self-absorption of impending parenthood
Sponge: Surrendering your former identity to the essentials of caring for a baby
Family Manager: Organizing and juggling the business of life with toddlers and preschoolers
Travel Agent: Stepping back -- and stepping up your role of activities manager -- as your children go through school
Volcano Dweller: Exercising damage control in your own life with teenagers
Family Remodeler: Reevaluating life as a parent of new adults
Plateau Parent: Reliving childhood through grandchildren
Rebounder: Accepting and embracing the parent/child role reversal
These eight stages are fixed at the birth of every child. Try as we might to fight this law of human nature, we all follow the same predictable, inevitable, universal, and eternal journey of parenthood with each child. Once your baby is born, there's no turning back.
Based on interviews with hundreds of parents from their twenties to their nineties and Dr. Wyckoff's practice as a family psychologist,
The Eight Seasons of Parenthood is a compassionate guide and road map to one of life's most profound and never ending experiences . . . essential reading for any parent who has ever wondered, "What's happening to the me I used to know?"
Customer Reviews:
truly wonderful.......2004-08-16
this is really a wonderful book - giving readers outlines of the different stages of parenthood. I especially enjoyed the last few chapters... it gave me an understanding of what to expect and how i would cope with the fact that my children would one day leave the house to have a family of their own. Be confident and loving... in this cycle of life. A must read.
Help for every stage.......2000-09-28
My 17-year-old daughter left this morning for three months of making her dreams come true. I would have been mopey and left to feel sorry for myself had I not read this book. Understanding the stages and phases of my life as a mother -- and as a daughter -- is practical and valuable. I highly recommend this book.
Perfect Gift for New Parents.......2000-07-28
We received this book after our first child was born. I was SO glad to have this book, it validated all my feelings about having a newborn in the house and helped me gain perspective on what is in store. At a time of so much chaos, this book really grounded me! I look forward to using it as my child grows and my role as a mother continues to change.
A must have parenting book.......2000-05-13
I'm a volcano dweller and a psychotherapist and I love the truth in this book. I thought I was going to mold my children, little did I realize how much they were going to mold me. This will be an absolute "must read" for all my clients who are parents. A definite "sanity enhancer" for those "how did I get myself into this" moments!
For EVERY Parent (and Grandparent)...A MUST!.......2000-04-24
As a mother of toddlers, this book has helped me appreciate how precious this "season" really is. After reading this book, I now know what to expect and will have more confidence in handling the ups & downs of parenthood. This is a MUST READ for anyone who is a parent-to-be thru a grandparent!

William Grant Still: Afro-American Symphony; In Memoriam; Africa (Symphonic Poem)
ASIN: 0520215435 |
Book Description
During the 1930s and 1940s William Grant Still (1895-1978) was known as the "Dean of Afro-American Composers." He worked as an arranger for early radio, on Broadway, and in Hollywood; major symphony orchestras performed his concert works; and an opera, written in collaboration with Langston Hughes, was produced by the New York City Opera. Despite these successes the composer's name gradually faded into obscurity. This book brings William Grant Still out of the archives and examines his place in America's musical heritage. It also provides a revealing window into our recent cultural past.
Until now Still's profound musical creativity and cultural awareness have been obscured by the controversies that dogged much of his personal and professional life. New topics explored by Catherine Parsons Smith and her contributors include the genesis of the Afro American Symphony, Still's best-known work; his troubled years in film and opera; and his outspoken anticommunism.

A Text of Epic Proportions.......2005-07-18
Shmuel Katz has managed to collect so much useful, important and fascinating information in this biography of Ze'ev Jabotinsky that it could stand on its own as a first class historical review of early 20th century Zionist and Palestinian history. Through obsessive documentation of his topic, Katz demolishes a number of historical myths surrounding both the roots of Zionism and the founding of the state of Israel. He does this all in a highly compelling and readable style, which is certainly helpful, given its 1800-page size. It is an extraordinary read and essential to fully understanding the origins of Israel and its conflict vis a vis the Arabs, as well as the life of this unique and gifted individual.
An Amazing book.......2002-10-24
Reading this book is a great intelectual adventure. There are a lot of information and the author has a very clear and envolving writing, always creating expectative over what's coming next. The author also mixes narrative with a lot of opinions and analysis about the facts. There are, as well, many quottings from other works about Jobotinsky, along with several transcriptions of classified official documents that shed light into controversial facts. The author is not afraid of polemics and gives new perspectives over matters treated as tabu, like Ben Gurion, Weizman, The Zionist Organization and the Histadrut. Much enfasis is given to Jabotinsky's unstopabble fight for the jewish rights in palestine and abroad, as well as his unfearing steadfastness against anyone who denied the goal of creating a jewish state. The book will give a complete understanding of the Revisionist movement, the British Rule in Israel, the internal Zionist Organization politics and its blunders, the arab behavior, among others. By reading this book you will also be able to better understand contemporary israeli politics and the relationship with the arab countries. The book, although very pleasant, takes quite a bit to be read, but it is a must for anyone who wants to know one of the greatest zionist and jewish leaders ever and get into the politics of the pre-state period.
History as it was being made.......2001-06-26
This book is a real eye opener. It completly changed my perspective on the history of the Middle East and how the British, who so often have come accross as the "white knight" was in fact the dirty thief.
The book is a monster in size and in the amount of information it presents. It documented and footnoted to a degree that one would expect from a work of this nature.
I highly suggest it to anyone who wants to find out about the history of modern Israel and how the wolrd powers did what they do best, exploit. I truly learned much!
A great book about a great man.......2000-06-25
Zeev (meaning wolf, in hebrew) Jabotinsky was one of the greatest leaders ever, and the greatest liberal Zionist leader. His works can not be denied. Because of his many deeds, he was admired by many - and hated by the rest. And he is the subject of this book, like many other books and articles. But this one is special - the auther spent 7 years of his life reserching and writing it, and those seven years have beared fruit. The writing is of a very high quality, and the contence is extensive. Itws like no other book about Jabotinsky I know. After reading, you will enrich not only your mind - but also your spirit, by knowing this great man. Highly recomended, for all people - Zionists, students, and anyone seeking pure knolage and feeding.
Unapologetic.......1999-10-12
An unapologetic biography of a controversial figure in Jewish/Israeli history. Mr. Katz's book is painstakingly well documented. It is more than the history of a single person; it provides a detailed look at competing Jewish ideologies and their role in the formation of Israel. Though biased, it is on the whole, well balanced.
