Fathers of the American Presidents by Jeff Young is unique in that it includes all the fathers of all the presidents. Inclusion of personal information about each father is interesting. Young also indicates how presidents were influenced by their fathers. The book should be included in public and school libraries so students can find out more about the presidents and their fathers.

Young seems to get at the heart of all the Presidents. An excellent reference to pick up and read chapter by chapter. Not that all the fathers are that exciting, but Young gives the reader his money's worth and then some. Quite a few surprises among the backgrounds of the highest in the land.

An illusion shattered.......2007-01-12

On the plus side, this is indeed a proper 'boys own' story and is very well written. Unfortunately, the reader becomes quickly aware of the arrogance of Hillary. Clearly he is a gifted climber who possesed endurance way beyond that of the average human. However, this is over-shadowed by the authors arrogance as he tells the reader how much better he was than those around him.

In a way i wish i had not read the book as it has shattered a romantic illusion I had of what Hillary was really like. It also made me very sympathetic of those who had to endure him in the ice packs of Antartica and the isolation of the death zone of Everest.

A fascinating story.......2004-10-29

I remember how exciting it was for those of us in London for Queen Elizabeth II's coronation (on June 2, 1953) to find out that Mount Everest had been climbed at last! And Sir Edmund Hillary's story of how he and Tenzing Norgay did it is terrific and even to my suspicious eyes seems sincere.

The portion of the book I was most curious about dealt with the Antarctic Expedition of 1957 to 1958. Hillary was the leader of the Ross Sea Party, which was to was to lay provisions between the Ross Sea and the South Pole to support the crossing of Antarctica by the Transpolar Party, starting from the Weddell Sea. The Transpolar Party was led by the overall expedition leader, Dr. Vivian (Bunny) Fuchs. The two parties reached the South Pole in January, 1958 after which they made it to the Ross Sea in less than six weeks. As the two parties neared the Pole, the telegrams between Bunny and Hillary were in all the newspapers. Vivian had told the story from his point of view in his 1958 book, "The Crossing of Antarctica," and even though that book also included eighteen pages written by Hillary, I was glad to see more of what Hillary had to say, especially with his perspective of writing about it so much later.

This entire book is worth reading and tells us plenty about the life of a successful adventurer.

Remarkable autobiography by an outstanding man.......2003-07-09

I found this book a pleasant surprise, after having read a few mountaineering adventure books. If you are looking for one, look elsewhere; Hillary climbed Everest, but did not have any major mountaineering accomplishments thereafter. Instead, we see the picture of a simple man, a very likeable and sincere one, with flaws and virtues.

We can see his sneakiness in going for the south pole despite orders not to, we can see his dedication to the people of Nepal, we can see his somewhat estranged relationship with Tenzing and the tensions that arose after Tenzing said he had reached the summit first. The discussion is a futile one, but it seems to put a damper on the relationship.

In this book we also follow his life, not just his great conquests. We see the backstage of the lecture circuit he went through after Everest, then the honors he received and his attempt to maintain some normalcy in his life. Overall, it is a very good life book, and despite it being filled with adventures, we see the character of a person that is much more than simply an adventurer.

An Interesting Book, But..........2003-05-13

Unless Edmund Hillary can produce definitive evidence that A.) George Mallory and Andrew Irvine did not reach the summit of Mt. Everest in 1924 or B.) that Tenzing Norgay was not actually the first to set foot on the summit, he cannot truthfully bill himself as "The First Person to Conquer Everest."

Great tales from the mouth of the adventurer himself........2003-02-25

Hillary is not just your average mountaineer. Being first on Everast gave him some opportunities that are not given to everyone else. However he has made the best of them, and has given a lot of time, energy and money back to the people who made it possible, the Nepalese. What a strange journey it has been. If you like Mountaineering books, ("it was a difficult bit, but we got over the top", you'll like this one.)

Buckingham's latest book Stencilling on a Grand Scale leads do-it-yourselfers beyond the realm of decorative borders featured in her best-selling "Stencilling: A Harrowsmith Guide" to a creative canvas whose limits are determined only by space, time and imagination. The key to her strategy is that a large stencilled work -- be it a door, wall, screen or floor -- can be the seamless sum of its parts. In other words, rather than using an expensive, unwieldy, multi-layered stencil to create a life-sized tree, use three 10 inch stencils of leaf clusters, laying and re-laying them to achieve the desired effect. The only limit to the ultimate size of the finished painting is the room you've set aside for it.

Whether you are fashioning a greeting card or a 40-foot mural, Buckingham recommends the same modest techniques. The methods used to faux-finish a wall -- a vine rambling up a corner, windows stencilled onto an actual door, a false shelf with flowerpots stencilled in an alcove -- can likewise be applied to furniture or folding screens and can be used on any scale.

A technical review of traditional and new stencilling tools is followed by a refresher course in basic stencilling methods, including stencil cutting, hard-surface stencilling, stencilling on primed canvas, overlays, registration and special effects, among them shading, shadows, plant detail and painting skies and landscapes. A chapter on freeform stencilling, with and without masks, prepares readers for the larger-scale works that are the book's central objective.

Buckingham advises perfecting your free-form skills on less ambitious projects (lampshades, borders, placemats) before moving to grander subjects. By the later chapters, stencillers will be comfortable tackling everything from picket and wrought iron fences, lattice work, garden gates, French doors, veranda doors and curtains to paving stones, terra-cotta tiles, carpets, mosaic floors, stone columns, balustrades, terraces, garden walls and room dividers. As always, Buckingham's genius lies in inspiration, and Stencilling on a Grand Scale introduces a how-to-world that has no boundaries.

Good Technique and Steps IF you like Folk Art type decor.......2005-12-02

The projects in this book were well-detailed and gave some good information on composition and layering of stencils. I checked this book out of the library and don't intend on buying it BUT I do recommend it if you like the more folkart type decor. I was looking for something more realistic in floral decor. The trellice project was very cute and would look great with a cottage country look.

I came across this book in my local library and loved it so much I bought a copy for myself. Ms. Buckingham manages to create beautiful trompe l'oeil work with simple techniques that are easy for even the absolute beginner. An added bonus is that her stencils are available online...

Great for beginners and Experts.......2001-10-28

I purchased this book 2 years ago. At the time I did not know they sold stencils until I purchased a few stencils on their website along with their video. The book is easy to follow and they give you many ways to incooporate simple stencils. This book encouraged me to create a mural from a small picture and brought out a talent that I never knew existed. Well done. Fantastic pictures with great color which I feel either makes or breaks a simple stencil or a 5 layered stencil. I would highly recommend their book, stencils and their video. If I can learn, anyone can!!!! A+++++

Hard Cover Quality In a Paperback.......2000-09-22

Grab this book without hesitation!

I saw the author on the show, "Home Matters" and was instantly motivated to buy this book. When I saw that it was available in both hard- and soft- cover verrsions, my decision was difficult. Usually saving a few bucks on the paperback version of any book means sacrificing quality; thin paper, fewer illustrations, shortened versions. etc.

When I opted to buy this in the paperback form, I was expecting the usual compromises. I was, joyfully, wrong! This book not only boasts the easy instructions and wonderful pictorials of the hardcover version, it also has wonderful, high quality paper stock rarely found even in hardcover these days. The quality of this book will stand up to years of planning and crafting!

This is a lovely gift book for expectant families - I was particularly drawn to the wonderful photography by Susan Wingate. Ms. Wingate is a talented photographer who so poignantly captures rich emotions and relationships in beautiful black and white images. A Pleasant Conversation With A Gifted Composer/Lyricist.......1998-10-24

If you're already a fan of Jerry Herman's music, this will only enhance your enjoyment. If not, you'll still gain some insights into the making of a Broadway show. But if you're a serious student of the American musical theatre stage, there's not much here. Herman's memoir reads like a friendly conversation, over coffee after a good dinner. Better still, he sprinkles quotes from his lyrics liberally throughout his reminiscences. Herman talks about the actresses and actors who created his characters, and occasionally talks about himself. But not in depth, nor do you gain any real insight into Jerry Herman the private man. But you do get a glimpse of Jerry Herman, author of three, count them, musicals that ran for over 1,500 performances each. It's a treat, but a bit too sweet, almost cloying. But it's Jerry Herman, who can definitely say, "I am what I am!"

wonderful, entertaining upbeat book.......1997-04-05

A great upbeat memoir by the man who gave us great shows, such as Mame, Hello Dolly and the wonderful Mac and Mabel. This book is a classic, like the musicals. He is so full of life and a genuine fondness for both people and theater. I liked his stress on his lyrics, which are what he does best. Our best lyricist- composer of oldfashioned musicals and show tunes. I couldn't put the book down. I hope Jerry Herman writes some more musicals. I also hope he writes another book
