Unpretentious gossip.......2002-09-28

At least "Kennedy Men: Three Generations of Sex, Scandal and Secrets" never pretends to be anything but what it is: a collection of tabloid reports and gleeful gossip. The entire book has very little point except: Kennedy men are scum who break the law and treat women like dirt. But those who have ever gotten a dirty little thrill from tabloids will enjoy this easy read.

It begins with the calculating patriarch Joseph Kennedy, whose many affairs were a source of inspiration to his sons. In this book are the assassinations of John and Robert Kennedy, the Good Friday rape case, Marilyn Monroe's mysterious death, drugs and alcoholism, divorce and adultery, the Mary Jo Kopechne tragedy, and dozens of other tragedies and mishaps.

Thankfully Bly doesn't buy into the sentimental goo about a family curse; in this book, it becomes evident that most of the Kennedy tragedies are, if not caused by their own actions, then nothing more than that -- accidents and tragedies. And it becomes quite evident that they did cause a lot of their own problems, such as Chappaquiddick.

With a title like "Three Generations of Sex, Scandal and Secrets," obviously as many extramarital affairs as possible are going to be gone over again. Joseph Kennedy's affairs start it off, and Bly happily retells JFK's affairs with Monroe, Inga Arvad, Angie Dickinson, Gene Tierney, and Judith Campbell Exner. While Ted Kennedy is usually a side-player in such books, he's roasted without mercy with plenty about his conquests as well -- including one humiliating anecdote where he takes a drunken prostitute to a party, where she wets an antique sofa. The next generation isn't spared as well: While most of them seem relatively okay, David Kennedy's drug addiction and Joe II's car crash and turbulent lifestyle are aired out. The most vivid of the third-generation Kennedy stories is the William Kennedy rape case. And even "John-John" doesn't get off too easily: His more flamboyant and famous girlfriends, like Madonna and Sharon Stone, are presented as well.

The entire book is written in bite-sized semi-chapters, giving the further impression of tabloid journalism. But the writing style is brisk and pleasant, never getting bogged for too long in any one area unless it's really important. There's a good array of photographs, at least half of which are onetime girlfriends of the various Kennedy men. (Look no further for one of the worst Madonna pictures I've ever seen)

Usually tabloid books are disguised with dignified covers and titles. But "Three Generations of Sex, Scandal and Secrets" is unashamed of what it is, which makes it a guilty pleasure worth the read.

Does What The Title Says.......2002-02-08

This book is essentially a collection of gossip about the three generations of the Kennedy men, starting with patriarch Joe Kennedy Sr and concluding in the present day (well, 1996). If you enjoy gossipy reads (as I do) then you'll enjoy this book.

The only problem I had was the sections devoted to John Kennedy were shorter than I would have liked. But there are dozens of bios on JFK out there, and this book wasn't entirely about him.

Reading this book, it seems like Teddy & the third generation's recklessness with drugs and women are what ended Joe Kennedy, Sr's dream of a family legacy.

"Thank God for the Kennedys. Without them, a lot of bad writers would be waiting tables." I heard this line on a recent rerun of Law & Order and it immediately made me think about Nellie Bly's The Kennedy Men, one of the more superflous books claiming to give us the dirt on America's prodigal sons. Basically, what Bly has done is compiled a collection of facts culled from other, better Kennedy books and recorded them in the breathless prose of a tabloid reporter. There's nothing new within this book and, despite Bly's claims to the contrary, no valuable or new insight to be gained from what is basically a list of other people's dirty laundry.

Nellie Bly pulls no punches.......2001-05-11

Nellie Bly details the peccadilloes of the Kennedy men from the 1900's to the 1990's. We get the lowdown on Gloria Swanson, Marilyn Monroe, Judith Campbell, Chappaquiddick, Joe II's jeep accident that left a young woman paralyzed, the drug use and the arrests of the third generation men, and so on. Joe Kennedy Sr. told his sons "If there's a piece of cake on your plate, take it". You have to admire the women that stuck it out with these guys. A good read for those interested in the Kennedys.

An easy, enjoyable, somewhat gossipy tale of the Kennedy men.......1998-12-23

While plenty of us already know the tale of this clan, this book is still a rather entertaining read. There are plenty of classic anecdotes about the ongoings of these men, especially Joe, Sr., JFK, Bobby and the rather pitiful Teddy, as portrayed in parts. It is often quite candid, if not humourous, however, does tend to fall into ruts at times. Overall, it's a good book with which to pass an otherwise boring weekend.

Quiero a traves de este medio agradecerles a los autores de esta obra maestra pues gracias a lo que he aprendido en el libro he obenido grandes gnancias, estoy sorprendido de la manera tan clara que explican un tema tan complejo, de veras se lo recomiendo a todas las personas interesadas en hacer dinero en la bolsa de valores y lo mejor, ellos ensenan paso a paso como hacerlo todo a traves de internet.

Sinceramente quiero compartir con todos lo maravilloso que ha sido este libro para mi, siempre había soñado con invertir en la bolsa de valores pero nunca lo había entendido muy bien, en un periodo de 2 años me había estudiado varios libros sobre el tema pero siempre me quedaba un poco confusa pero gracias a dios y a los Señores autores del libro eso ha cambiado ya que en un corto tiempo he aprendido todo sobre opciones, acciones de centavos, como predecir el movimiento de una compañía y mucho mas, debido a esto mi situación financiera ha cambiado drásticamente de unos meses para acá, se lo recomiendo a todas las personas que realmente quieran aprender todo sobre la bolsa de valores y lo que mas me gustó es que esta escrito en un lenguaje bien sencillo y fácil de entender. Quisiera decirle algo a la persona que escribió el primer comentario el cual les confieso que me ha enojado un poco pues no es justo que este confundiendo a los lectores, quiero decirle que obviamente el no sabe nada de la bolsa de valores y sospecho que detrás de ese comentario hay algún otro motivos pues esta totalmente equivocado y por ultimo quiero preguntarle a ese señor, como pudo el llegar a la conclusión que el libro estaba tan malo si supuestamente el dice que nunca se lo enviaron, gran contradicción verdad....

Como la reseña editorial lo dice: es una manera simple de aprender sobre la bolsa. Ojalá se tomen el tiempo de ojear al azar -en esta página electrónica, casi hasta arriba- el contenido del libro, para que vean lo que les digo: El lenguaje es tan simple, que más bien es bastante pobre: el manejo del español de estos autores deja mucho qué desear, y ni siquiera tuvieron el cuidado de hacer revisar su texto por alguien con más cultura que ellos. Mucho de lo que estos autores tratan de vender como una gran contribución a los futuros inversionistas hispanohablantes no dejan de ser trivialidades y material de relleno.

Si todavía lo dudan, vayan a la página de estos autores (no la menciono aquí porque va contra la política de reseñas de Amazon) y verán que los autores usan su página para promover la compra de su libro y una suscripción a sus servicios informativos. Sin embargo, la página es poco operacional, tendenciosa, y, poco, si acaso, la actualizan (sus últimas predicciones son del 2005). Los autores pretenden hacer blanco en la buena fe de sus posibles clientes al publican sus supuestos aciertos, sin publicar sus predicciones erróneas, las cuales, al igual que cuando se tira una moneda al aire, deben ocurrir alrededor del 50% de las veces. En otras palabras, los autores trivializan y reducen el complejo comportamiento de la bolsa a un juego de reglas que ellos han supuestamente, descubierto, y que los han hecho, también supuestamente, multimillonarios.

Y, por cierto, en su página no proporcionan ningún teléfono junto con su dirección en Miami.

Por si fuera poco, NUNCA ENVIAN EL LIBRO.

This is exactly what I said in my review of the baseball price guide: "I'll make this short and sweet. I thought this book would be helpful when going to sportscard shows. I felt I wouldn't have to carry a big book around. But this book is so superficial you are better off just taking the Monthly or Beckett Plus Price Guides. DO NOT waste your money on this book. I returned it to Amazon."

Excellent Book - A Must Read!.......2005-09-12

I have read this book over several times and highly recommend it. It provides excellent advice on parenting in a loving, nurturing way and provides ways on raising well-rounded, responsible and good-natured children and how to adjust your parenting style if you have gone off track. It discusses how to avoid going off track and how to avoid raising spoiled and dependent children and how to get back on track if you've gone off. I checked this book out from the library and have re-newed it 3x - I'am now purchasing a used copy of this book to add to my library. Well worth it!

I am a professional in the field of child behavior problems and found this book to be very insightful. Many of the families I have come across with children who have severe behavior problems were exhibiting the overindulgent behavior Ellis describes in this book. The concepts are very easy to understand and she gives great examples. I liked the beginning of the book the most. the second half, focusing more on child development - was less interesting to me. As a supervisor of a family counseling program, I assigned my couselors to read a chapter a week and we discussed it weekly. Everyone was in agreement that the book has excellent advice and touches on the "roots" and causes of many of the problems of children today.

I've read this book over & over. It is a wonderful guide to teaching kids to cope with a very complex often scary world. Mothers, especially, are often told that if they work & leave their kids to their own devices, they're "bad" mothers. I'm so glad to see that this book makes the point that it is learning to do things on your own that you learn to cope with life, not by having a parent hover over you all the time & rescue you. The book does a wonderful job with case studies & illustrations of how too many parents confuse dependency with emotional closeness. The book also suggest very practical solutions as to how parents can break that dependency & push their child to grow up with their age. I loved the point that the book made that kids need to learn that life can be difficult at times, not to expect everything to come out perfectly, to learn to cope with disappointment, having to struggle, having to feel unhappy at times, & understanding that you have to work to get ahead in the world...no one can GIVE you a life. This is one great book.

"Got Your Back" Review.......2005-09-14

Tupac Shakur's former bodyguard, Frank Alexander, goes in-depth on the world of gangsta rap by discussing his years as a bodyguard for Death Row Records. He goes into detail about the atmosphere of the label at that time with a serious of stories about stars Snoop Doggy Dogg, Suge Knight, Dr. Dre, Kurupt, Danny Boy, and others. His time with Pac takes up the majority of the book including his own detailed account of the night that Shakur was murdered. He gives a side of Pac that the media very rarely shows. "Got Your Back" is an excellent read for any fan of Tupac or Death Row Records.

...everyone knew tupac an biggie were the finest. all this fakers eg. eminem tryin to be hard just for tha money spoil hip hop. at the end of the day only the most talented are remembered. puff daddy and knight shouldn't be allowed to spoil the essence of rap wit their capatilist ways. great book also. just coz ur frum the ghetto dont mean ur bad at heart. i heard what biggie and tupacs mums said about them when younger, they seemed like good people influenced by the violent surroundings. keep da peace.

Tupac, the Person.......2000-08-09

I've always enjoyed Tupac the rapper. The Thug Life, all that. I knew everything about his life. I related to all his lyrics, coming from the projects of NYC. But after reading this book i not only understood Tupac better, but i got to know the real Tupac, the person. The Tupac who showed love to all his fans, and just a plain down to earth dude that had a loving heart. And i think if your a huge Tupac fan, this book is for you. And to Frank Alexander where ever you are I understand, it wasn't your fault. In Memory of Tupac, Only God Can Judge You, Revelation 20:12.

I read most of the other books on Tupac available over here (Ireland) and this one is by far the best and gives a proper insight into what the job was like and Tupac was like. Some people say he talks about himself too much, the book is about life with Tupac, of course he has to say what his life is and was like to get any perspective! How can the man be to blame when he was in a different car and unarmed? He'd want to be a lot bigger and faster to take a bullet from 30 yards away!
