Should Be A Classic.......2006-12-12

The presidential election of 1896 was one of the most interesting and important contests in American history, and it was made so not by the winner (a lackluster Ohio politician named William McKinley) but by the loser, William Jennings Bryan. Although best remembered for the first and last moments of his public career (the "Cross of Gold" speech and his championing of creationism at the Scopes Trial), Bryan was in fact the founding father of modern progressivism. Numerous ideas, ranging from the Federal Reserve and the income tax to anti-imperialism and women's suffrage, can be traced to one of Bryan's three presidential campaigns (1896, 1900, and 1908). What's more, Bryan's personality itself is a study in the best aspects of American character - despite his flaws, he was by all accounts a brilliant orator, devoted husband, loving father, voracious reader and intellectual (although this point is often brought into dispute by his more venomous detractors), sincere believer in democracy and equal opportunity, and often brave champion of causes that no one would touch at the last turn-of-the-century, but which are taken for granted today as being cornerstones of American political progress. This book serves three great functions:
1) It transports the reader back to the presidential election of 1896, truly immersing us in a historic period that has received a much-undeserved obscurity;
2) It shares with us dozens of the early speeches of William Jennings Bryan, thereby exposing us to his oratorical genius and the fertile mind that lay behind the eloquence (reading these speeches is worth the price of the text alone);
3) It gives us an intimate look at the character of William Jennings Bryan himself, a man who brought to the presidency a pro-active and progressive approach that had never before been seen, despite the fact that he was never able to serve in it himself.
The 1890s were a pivotal decade in our nation's history, one in which great and noble men of often diametrically opposing points-of-view (Grover Cleveland, William Jennings Bryan, William McKinley, Marcus Hanna, Eugene Debs, John Peter Atgeld, James Weaver, etc) rose to power and prominence. I cannot imagine that a better book either from or about this period has ever been written. Indeed, I can think of no better book ever written about a presidential campaign. This book should be a must-read for anyone who wishes to study American history, political science, liberalism, and/or the art of rhetoric.

Strong graphics and clear instructions make this one of my favorite quilt books. The gates are lovely, and give you the idea that you really are wandering into a secret garden once you have one of these hanging on your wall. I am researching the gates and rails of New Orleans, looking for the perfect one to use for a special piece of fabric I want to use to make one of these lovely quilts. What fun!

The cover picture is a picture of Mision de Sol, a resort and spa with vibrant colors, dramatic waterfalls and beautiful adobe walls. Throughout the pages we are introduced to textures, interiors, surroundings, traditional adobes, modern adobes, adobe escapes and building materials needed to create a rugged home with romantic appeal.

The decorative iron sconces with glowing candles are inspiring and the use of reflective pools and lush plantings adds artistic appeal. I loved the bookshelves in a room with a chandelier, table with a vase of lilies and rough terra tiled floor covered with a beautifully textured red carpet.

Casa Adobe is a terrific source book for those contemplating living in an adobe or any other earthen style home. Photographs with informaive descriptions tease the casual reader, while those already familiar with Mexico, Arizona, and the Southwest immediately jump head first into the well-written, beautifully illustrated text. Joe P. Carr and Karen Witynski take you to Sante Fe and the surrounding areas with early photographs of adobe structures. Then you are taken to country and contempory homes and structures that best reflect what Casa Adobe is all about. The last chapter of the book is especially helpful foranyone interested in adobe, stucco, or rammed earth homes. It gives sources and individuals to contact as well as galleries and suppliers. My next purchas will be Casa Yucatan, written and photographed by the same collaborative authors.

Authentic Portrait of Hildegard.......2002-03-26

Anne King-Lenzmeier has written a comprehensive and truthful work on one of the most fascinating mystics ever. Today many are misusing and misrepresenting Hildegard of Bingen for their own modern causes. You will find no such gibberish here. Anne is a scholar who has written a thoroughly accessible book for the layman who wants to know Hildegard better and deepen their own walk with God in the process. The work is authoritative and thorough. We have much to learn from Hildegard and this book provides an excellent guide to her work and life.

This book has a valuable introduction tracing the development of Jewish participation in sport in the modern era. It also contains 'portraits' of individual Jewish athletes of distinction. It is a valuable resource .
However when one wishes to inspire the younger generation it is helpful to tell stories of the struggles individuals made to make their way . But perhaps for that , another volume is necessary.

Lots of Legends.......2001-04-12

The International Jewish Hall of Fame has plenty of reasons to be proud - and most are listed in this book. Not meant to be a complete biography, it gives sample snapshots of these legendary athletes, coaches and sportswriters. Obviously there is a rich and deep heritage in the Jewish community and this books fosters that well.

One or two paragraphs each containing stats and awards. I was expecting more fleshed out biographies, perhaps outlining any adversities these folks had to endure, Jewish or otherwise. No or almost no personal information.
