Book Description
Chris and Chrissy Rouse, an experienced father-and-son scuba diving team, hoped to achieve widespread recognition for their outstanding but controversial diving skills. Obsessed and ambitious, they sought to solve the secrets of a mysterious, undocumented World War II German U-boat that lay under 230 feet of water, only a half-day's mission from New York Harbor. In doing so, they paid the ultimate price in their quest for fame.
Bernie Chowdhury, himself an expert diver and a close friend of the Rouses', explores the thrill-seeking world of deep-sea diving, including its legendary figures, most celebrated triumphs, and gruesome tragedies. By examining the diver's psychology through the complex father-and-son dynamic, Chowdhury illuminates the extreme sport diver's push toward -- and sometimes beyond -- the limits of human endurance.

Duffy.......2007-07-30
Maybe I shouldn't write my review, because I didn't finish the book, but it just isn't good. This is supposed to be a tragic story of a father and son that lose their life to a sport they thoroughly enjoy, yet all I get from the writing is a couple of guys who are arrogant and immature. Chowdhury goes between writing technical diving information to dialogue between characters, that reads hollow and adolescent. Not a good read for me. If you're into diving and wrecks, ready Kevin McMurray. He's BRILLIANT!!!
A Great Read for All Divers.......2007-07-12
This book will make you laugh, will make you cry, but more importantly, will make you think. This book contains a lot of good, and usable information about diving, the history of mixed gases, and makes you realize even the best can fail. Even with the amount of info contained, Bernie ties it all in to make an enjoyable and easily followed story. Anyone who claims it was boring or he rambled too much, has ADD.
This book SHOULD be read by all new divers!
Alright but..........2007-02-08
This book is alright but I read The Last Attempt by Carlos Serra and found that one a whole lot more interesting. It's quite controversial to say the least. It tells the story of a female freediver champion who ended up dying because of her husband, who is a hero on the sport also. Even though there is some paralellism between the two stories, The Last Attempt is a much more interesting reading than this one. Just be ready for some shocking twist in the story. I'm impressed!
Mediocre at best.......2007-02-03
This book, "The Last Dive" is a poorly written attempt to ride the coat tails of the fantastic book, "Shadow Divers". 80% of this book is mindless filler. It's only saving grace is that it presents a good case for safe deep wreck diving.
delight in details.......2007-01-22
Yes, the author goes into a lot of detail. And yes, if you are not a diver, you'll find the book a bore. Having said that, as a diver you'll find the stories of diving in the '80's and 90's very interesting. These are the guys who paved the way for tech and deep diving. And through their trails and errors, others have learned a lot. Yes, Bernie Chowdhury also writes a lot about his own experiences, but I'm glad he did, as his own story is just as interesting as the story of the Rouses.

Book Description
The cabinets of obsessive Renaissance collectors were filled with rhinoceros horns encrusted with rubies and jaws of gigantic fish, stuffed birds in the most extraordinary colors, and glorious seashells of all descriptions. Today's collectors amass everything from Picassos to Pez dispensers. But why? In To Have and to Hold, Philipp Blom explores the history of the collecting passion from the Renaissance to the present.
Every collected object, be it a matchbook or a martyr's fingernail, carries a meaning that transcends the object itself; it is a totem. Single-minded pursuit turns the collector into cultural anthropologist. For Alex Shear, his collection from the post-war period-from vintage radios, fallout shelters, and Jell-O boxes to elaborate hair drying contraptions, bobby pins, and Barbie dolls-preserves an age of innocence in the form of the familiar household items that served as the set props for the 1950s American Dream. Alex's Renaissance counterpart is King Rudolph II, whose collection of the art and exotica of his day (housed in his ever-expanding castle in Prague) was breathtaking in its complexity and sophistication, representing the magnificent profusion of the treasures of a world newly explored.
Out of this glittering diversity of material Blom distills the themes underlying this seemingly elusive passion: conquest and possession, chaos and memory, a void to be filled, and the awareness of our own mortality. What emerges is the story of the collector as bridegroom, deliriously, obsessively happy, wed to his possessions, till death do us part.

Absorbing and fascinating.......2007-02-22
This is a book that takes you on a fascinating journey, is an enjoyable read and is also historically well-researched, so it can therefore be used by the student or academic as a useful reference. I came upon it quite by accident but now find it a very useful addition to my bookshelf. The story of the Ashmolean Museum's foundation was one of my particular favourites and really made my blood boil! Such stories are not often told about museum collections! I take my hat off to the author!
Stories and more.........2007-02-18
At first I thought this was going to be a survey of some eccentric collectors in history, on which is does not disappoint, but it turns out to be a lot richer and contain some real pearls of wisdom about life in general, and flashes of historical insight.
Reading through the chapters of this book was a lot like rummaging through a private collectors cabinet of curiosities. The chapter titles alone don't provide direction and only after a few pages does it begin to reveal its treasure. Chapters cover aspects of collecting as diverse as: people who collected experiences with women (Casanova), the collecting of body parts (religious relics), collecting memories, American billionaires who bought up European heritage (JP Morgan, Hearst), collectors of mass-produced items (milk bottles, food wrappers), Princes and Kings such as Rudolf of Hapsburg (17th C) who filled his castle with the worlds greatest collections and slowly went mad, collecting as a madness, as a substitute for love, as a form of autism, as psychology, as crime - and in the end, as a warning to all those who take it too far.
Worlds of wonder.......2003-05-31
Absorbing and beautifully written, with a great bibliography to lead you on in your travels through this fascinating genre. Blom does for the general subject of collecting what Basbanes did for bibliophilia in A Gentle Madness. Well worth the read.

A concept book with teaching aspects.......2007-03-16
An interesting book for teachers, this book gives some very interesting ideas for quilting with classes and how Emmel went about it. There are few actual patterns simply because the students will guide the design and make-up of the quilt through ability, numbers and interest. Emmel also provides teachers with ideas for blending the project into a number of subject areas (art, science, maths..) My biggest beef would be it is US-centric with some patterns not really mapping to an Australian society. I love the maths/symmetry quilt.
Book Description
Marley and Me meets All Creatures Great and Small, as an ailing but lovable orphan buffalo joins a Santa Fe household.
A sprawling suburban house in Santa Fe is not the kind of home where a buffalo normally roams, but Veryl Goodnight and Roger Brooks are not your ordinary animal lovers. Over a hundred years after Veryl's ancestors, Charles and Mary Ann Goodnight, hand-raised two baby buffalo to help save the species from extinction, the sculptor and her husband adopt an orphaned buffalo calf of their own. Against a backdrop of the old American West, A Buffalo in the House tells the story of a household situation beyond any sitcom writer's wildest dreams
Charlie has no idea he's a buffalo and Roger has no idea just how strong the bond between man and buffalo can be. In the historical shadow of the near-extermination of a majestic and misunderstood animal, Roger sets out to save just one buffalo. Written in the tradition of Ian Frazier's Great Plains and the work of Garrison Keillor and Bill Bryson, A Buffalo in the House tells an important, uplifting story about one animal's ability to touch human lives and reconnect people of all ages to the vanished past.
Book Description
Some of the world's most beautiful houses grace the Pacific Coast of Mexico. Houses by the Sea is as colorful, creative, and inspiring as the homes themselves. The photography, by Rigoberto Moreno, is so vibrant and crisp that each page seems like a window onto these stunning homes and their lush surroundings.
Each section of the book highlights one of these unique homes and describes the architect's particular challenges and constraints in building it, from unusual owner requests to difficult cliffside terrain. Many of the projects employed indigenous materials or traditional designs, and these are also described, along with some landscaping and interior design features.
Customer Reviews:
These houses are sick!.......2003-11-09
I went and visited at one of these houses. It was the most amazing place I had ever been. I recommend anyone to go there. It is heaven and the area is great not yet insanely americanized like Cancun. 5000 a night to rent these places check it out.
A Gorgeous Book of Dream Houses.......2003-07-17
This book was enough to start me dreaming of retiring to Mexico--or maybe just taking a looong vacation there! The photographs are stunning--really incredible. I also enjoyed the writing style in the sections where they discuss the goals for each house and the owners and architects input toward the whole project.

wonderful houses in wonderful colors.......2000-03-12
The perfect photographical work reveals beautiful mexican houses in unusual colors and color combinations (for the northern european taste). I recommend the book to everyone who looks for great ideas and a feast for the eyes, not so much for architectural details.
Not that good.......2000-03-10
nice book to put on the top of a coffee table but not a book for architecture references, as you cannot see the houses. The photograph had a lot of fun taking beautiful artful photos, but he forgot that we want to actually SEE the houses and not only the color of the walls and the views from the swimming pools (which are very beautiful indeed). Plans and panaromic photos of the houses would have been usefull. Sybille
Vivid photographs of fab houses.......1999-11-23
This is a very entertaining and valuable resource for those interested in contemporary Mexican design. The houses of Careyes are most note worthy. Good quality and color make images of the houses of Mexico's Pacific coast come alive.

How to focus on your child's wellbeing, not revenge........2002-05-07
"I hate life sometimes. I should have been able to see my sisters. I get real angry at my mom and dad. Sometimes I'm mad at the whole world." Divorce often leaves children in a path of devastation. Some children feel the chronic need, well into their adult lives, to try to please both parents, or to show pressured allegiance to one parent and shun the other. Some children have indelible memories of horrific fights and arguments prior to and after their parents divorce. Such children may promise themselves that they will never get married - it involves too much suffering. Some children are convinced that they are the hidden cause of their parent's divorce. Feelings of abandonment, fear, hurt and guilt become the norm. It's common for children to repeat the traumas of their childhood or to withdraw into a repressed silence, cutting themselves off from the pleasures of life. But much of this pain can be avoided, and everyone benefits. How? Dr. Bienenfeld lets you first hear from the children themselves. She then outlines a step-by-step method to help parents grasp the pain that their children are in and to help parents separate their own hostilities and financial battles from parenting issues. Although the parents are no longer marital partners, they will remain parent-partners for life. Given this, she outlines a method for helping them communicate clearly and fairly on all issues involving the children.

Johnny Thunders-In Cold Blood BOOK.......2007-01-04
I had the original pressing from the late 80's or whenever it came out-got this version for my sister for Christmas--a great book and accounting of one of my fave guys JT. This is an updated verion as well-my only complaint is the part about when myself and Andy Babiuk (we are in The Chesterfield Kings) brought Johnny up to Rochester, NY to record an album-the reporting is accurate-and the track "Critic's Choice" is the last thing he recorded in the United States, or for that matter anywhere in a real studio--problem is Nina interviewed someone else--and they stated that he was incompatible with us, and we were impatient with him-NOT TRUE. We got along fine musically and socially-the problem was with the guy who owned the studio. He was screwing with JT, Johnny got miffed and the session only yielded one complete song and a batch of unfinished stuff. Nina-CALL ME THE NEXT TIME YOU UPDATE?? Greg Prevost/Outasite/Chesterfield Kings
needs more careful research, as well as an index..........2006-11-29
This book is useful for anyone interested in this seminal and influential figure of the American rock music underground. However, the author has the annoying habit of repeating accepted 'truths' that should be related with some scepticism. Case in point; "Jerry Nolan saw Elvis...". Many people simply do not believe junkie Jerry's stories (in one interview he spoke of an informal discussion with Jimi Hendrix, only the time and place he provided were clearly after Hendrix' death). I think Jerry Nolan was the world's greatest rock drummer, but when writing a book, careful presentation of material is in order.
This book also completely omits an index, making reference difficult or impossible. And yes, a book on Johnny Thunders does deserve an index, despite what you might otherwise think.
Hopefully these flaws will be repaired in any future editions of the book.
Only bio of Thunders, and by a very good writer.......2006-08-23
I heard this book mentioned in the new documentary about Arthur Killer Kane, "New York Doll". I had Antonia's book about the Dolls and thought they were fortunate to have a biographer who was a very good writer. Same here. I am glad that someone made a record of the tenderness and vulnerability that had to be at the heart of this artist. Like Frank, Marilyn and Elvis, he wore his heart on his sleeve and we were privileged to be there for it. One of the very few guitarists from whom you can hear a few seconds and know instantly who it is.
You should see that DVD, and also "Thunders, Kane and Nolan", a concert in 1987 when, I believe, Johnny was comparatively clean. That is the only Dolls reunion you will need.
Superb Biography - A great read even if you aren't a fan.......2006-03-12
Nina Antonia is a fantastic writer. I read through the 200+ pages in a day.
What I most enjoyed about this book is that it made Johnny out to be human - something no other press/media outlet acknowledged. Throughout the 80's he struggled valiantly against his addiction, only to fail. But never for a moment did he stop missing his children, regretting the time he spent away from them. This book doesn't try to sanitize his life. It details the depths of his addiction, his failures and lost opportunities. However, Nina also talks about the hope that he found later in life.
There are dozens of photos throughout the book - my favorite of which is a picture of a sober-looking Johnny and his girlfriend pushing their child in a stroller. It says a lot about the man: However strung out and wasted he could get, in his heart he was just a normal guy. It's too bad he became a parody of the thing his "fans" wanted him to be.
He was one of the very last of a breed of Rock 'N' Rollers that we will never see again and a presence as powerful as his will be sorely missed.
We miss you, Johnny.

Johnny Thunders, The Man Behind the Myth.......2003-06-22
A must-read for any fan of Thunders, The New York Dolls, punk, and good old rock and roll. It's easy to see the influence Thunders has had on music, style, and attitude. Nina's exhaustive research, first-person interviews and genuine love of detail create a rich tapestry of the life of the man behind the myth. Unflinching yet respectful, this book avoids the tabloid feel of most Thunders reads while never missing the good, bad, or ugly that Johnny brought upon himself and those around him. From his birth in Queens, New York, to his untimely death at the age of 38 in New Orleans, Johnny was an original. This book was authorised by Thunders himself and contains many rare photos and a full discography. Love Johnny, love this book! RR
