Night Watch Memoirs of a Circumnavigation.......2007-08-19
This is such a great read! It's laugh-out-loud funny! And I feel as though I am in a conversation with the Author. Her point of view is 20/20 and I love the lady -- no fretting, just twirling her binoculars.
I'm buying this book for a friend who thinks she wants to do the same trip!
Most enjoyable book I have read in years.......2002-11-23
Every night I bugged my wife by reading delightful passages to her. She couldn't wait until I was finshed so she could read it, but I hated for the book to end as I enjoyed my time with it so much. I loved it.
pure delight!.......2002-10-02
Night Watch is a great read! a wonderful mixture of action (sailing) and contemplation (cultural reflections). The author has a freshness of style which I admire, managing to be both eloquent and earthy. I was truly sad when the saga ended.
Brilliant recounting of an extraordinary adventure.......2002-08-14
I found this book to be a compelling and heartwarming recounting of an amazing experience. The writing is excellent and I found myself easily transported around the world through Ms. Knecht's delightful narrative. Read this book! It's outstanding!!!!!

Customer Reviews:
One for your Personal Library.......2006-08-31
Here is a book you can refer to forever. Good stuff to know.
The writer has been on the Jay Thomas Radio Show (Sirius Satellite) many times, and he's very helpful! He gives a tollfree number in the book, so that if you ever get a ticket you can call him up and ask questions about your specific situation and he'll help you FREE!! All for just the cost of this book!
Become an Informed Driver.......2006-08-13
This book was very knowledgeable on the ways cops obtain your speed as well as the faults in the types of ways they obtain it. Along with using correct and "street" terminology, it talks about the different types of radar used to pick up your speed and how they obtain your speed by pacing you. There are MANY faults and this book just confirms my prior thoughts that tickets are purely a money making scam not only for the police but for the insurance agencies as well. If nothing else buy it to be prepared when you do get pulled over as it gives you good tips on how to get away from a ticket at this early stage to. 4 out of 5 only because it does not list laws from every state just some laws from some states.
An Educated Guide To Speeding Tickets-How To Beat Avoid Them.......2006-08-10
It was helpfull but alot of the information is not good for the Washington state courts.
It really works.......2006-02-28
I just beat my speeding ticket last week by following Mr. Wallace's advice on sending a certified mail to the officer asking for the calibration record, FCC license, training record, etc. The officer didn't have most of it and stated that he didn't get the mail when I showed him the receipt of the certified mail he then said he had some of what I asked for. When we met the judge, He asked to dismiss the case stating that he didn't have the documents I asked for to prepare my case. My case was dismissed and saved me $200 of speeding ticket. I knew I did not speed in the first place and I'm so glad I invested on this book. It's worth the money. I also spoke to Mr. Wallace prior to my case preparation. He has a toll free number and he returns calls...This book is on the top of my list...
Simply The Best Book Of Its Kind-Easy Read-Great Info.......2005-12-08
Out of the 3 books that I recently purchased to help me fight a speeding ticket in my home state of Illinios, the Educated Guide by Richard Wallace was simply the best of them all. It read so easy and was full of helpful information. The one simple tip I learned in the book which I am surprised most people do not think of, is to obtain a copy of your driving history or record from your DMV/Registry and bring it to court along with you. As Mr. Wallace instructs, show it to the court, most of the time the court will dismiss your case because you have a clean record which is EXACTLY what happened to me. I WON! I did not have to pay the $110 and my insurance rates did not go up. I learned so much in this book. I highly recommend it to any parent who has a newly licensed son or daughter or for the husband or wife who cant slow down, like me! I am 52 years old and have never received a speeding ticket but I do drive a little faster than I should, as most of us do! Thank you Amazon for carrying the book and KUDOS to Mr. Wallace for taking the time to write it and the guts to tell the truth about the greed associated with the issuing of speeding tickets by the police. What impressed me also was that Mr. Wallace actually posts on his website the websites of his competition. I especially enjoyed the National Motorists Assocation website, it was most helpful. I learned so much from this experience and after reading this book, I will never receive another ticket again but if I do, I will fight back. Thanks again to both Amazon and Officer Wallace.

Nelson's Pocket Book of Pediatric Antimicrobial Therapy, 2006-2007 Latest Edition!
ASIN: 1405104287 |
Book Description
The Philadelphia Guide: Inpatient Pediatrics brings you the latest guidelines, procedures, and treatment and management strategies for inpatient pediatric care. The field of pediatric hospital medicine is rapidly growing and this handbook focuses specifically on caring for pediatric patients in the hospital setting. The Philadelphia Guide: Inpatient Pediatrics addresses over 350 commonly encountered inpatient pediatric medical conditions. Unlike other handbooks, it goes beyond diagnostic strategies to include complete treatment and management guidelines. The focus on the treatment of so many inpatient pediatric medical conditions means that it can be used by everyone who cares for pediatric patients in the hospital--medical students, residents, and pediatric attendings. Additionally, the organization of the book makes it immensely accessible. The clinical sections are alphabetized and subheadings are consistent throughout the book to make finding information quick and easy. Readers will have rapid access to tables listing pediatric dosages for emergency, airway, and rapid sequence intubation medications, as well as defibrillation and cardioversion protocols. Classic and current evidence-based references are included. Invaluable appendices cover normal vital signs, neonatal codes, and PALS algorithms. A fresh, new approach to pediatric literature, this indispensable handbook offers concise, precise information for healthcare practitioners of all levels, from all disciplines, involved in the care of children in the inpatient setting.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful peripheral brain.......2006-08-04
great quick reference for the "I need to know this now" type of information. An excellent job and excellent tool for teaching med students and residents
Fills a very large gap in pediatric medicine.......2005-08-09
The Philadelphia Guide: Inpatient Pediatrics fills a significant gap in practical pediatric texts. Harriet Lane has long been the standard, but is difficult to use, impractical at times, and incomplete. This book, which conveniently fits in a white coat pocket, is an indispensible resource for medical students and pediatric residents and fills the holes that Harriet leaves open. It give practical and complete, yet concise information on presentation and management of the diseases commonly encountered by the pediatric inpatient physician. As a new pediatric resident, this book has become the most indispensible resource in my pocket.
One of the Best in the Business.......2005-08-06
As a user of harrriet lane for years...This book goes beyond. As an easy to read, comprehensive resource for almost everything you will see as an inpatient house officer, I would recommend keeping it with you at all times. It is filled with all the questions you find yourself often looking up on those late night calls. It gives you the one line answers you are always looking for. It has information on conditions from the most basic to the most obscure and what you need to know about them. It provides answers to treatment, diagnosis, and guidelines.
Most of all it helps you treat patients, provide better care, and teach you at the same time. It includes chart, bold type, and subject heading formats. This book is AWESOME!!! Get yours today

The Social Logic of Space
ASIN: 0521572843 |
Book Description
Houses are not just assemblages of individual rooms but intricate patterns of organised space, governed by rules and conventions about the size and configuration of rooms, which domestic activities go together, how the interior should be decorated and furnished and what kinds of household object are appropriate in each setting, how family members relate to one another in different spaces, and how and where guests should be received and entertained in the home. Decoding Homes and Houses introduces new, computer-based techniques designed to retrieve and interpret this wealth of social and symbolic information. The various representations and measures show how domestic space provides a shared framework for everyday life, how social meanings are constructed in the home and how different sub-groups within society differentiate themselves through their patterns of domestic space and lifestyles.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding memoir of growing up in a unique orphanage........1998-11-22
Phil Craft's mother died giving birth to him. Rejected outright by his father, he immediately was placed in a foundling home, where, according to his own words, he was "terrorized" for five years, the very first five years of his life! He then was transferred to an orphange, where he thought he was being sent to die. Little did he know then that the orphange would save his life instead. It was the Pride of Judea Children's Home in Brooklyn, New York. He would emerge from that Home thirteen years later, a stronger human being, ready to get on with the rest of his life. PeeWee Friedland and his older brother, Bernie, were stuck in an abusive foster home for three and one half years. Finallt, they could take it no longer and they ran away. Where to next? It was a despondent time. One more bad placement, Pee Wee thought, and he'd be a wreck for life. But good fortune smiled upon them. They were placed in the same orphanage as Phil, the Pride of Judea. Peewee Friedland would be helped immeasurably by the place and his life would be turned around. Just what kind of orphanage was the Pride of Judea and who were these surrogate parent figures who helped these orphans so much? This book, written by Messrs. Craft and Friedland, is a fascinating memoir of this orphanage, complete with its entire scene, its colorful cast of characters, and a full description of the wonderful people who staffed it. In fact, three of the main four adult figures, (all still alive) give their own first hand account of their experiences in the orphanage. The result is a poignant and moving memoir of two kids initially thrown on the scrap heap, only to be resurrected by a unique institution staffed by caring adults. Another related theme is raised, starting with a powerful foreword to the book by Father Val J. Peter, the Executive Director of the most well known orphanage in the world, Boys'Town. The theme, further elaborated on by the authors in an excellent final chapter, strongly recommends that small quality orphanages can definitely meet the needs of many of the three quarter million children who are shuttled through foster care today in this country with very poor results. These small orphanages would serve their needs far better and should be considered as strong options to the one track system of foster care. This book is an excellent read, and as one review put it, "a remarkable memoir, both moving and entertaining."
Outstanding, sensitive comment on life in orphanage.......1998-11-21
Friedland, especially, is very very sensitive and an excellent writer. Shows that being an orphan is necessarily a hardship. Can be an advantage. He is a modern hero.
Book Description
Eileen Farrell is blessed with two voices. A classically-trained dramatic soprano who also loves to belt pop songs and torch the blues, she successfully conquered the worlds of opera and popular music over the course of her whirlwind career. Now, Farrell shares reminiscences about her remarkable professional and personal life.
With candor, humor, and affection, she recalls her New England childhood, her overnight success at age twenty as star of her own CBS radio show, her big break dubbing vocals for Eleanor Parker in the MGM movie Interrupted Melody, and her many guest appearances on television shows. Farrell discusses her rise to fame as an opera star, from her highly acclaimed performance in Medea in 1955, to her historic debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Alceste in 1960. She also fondly recollects her marriage of forty years to New York police officer Robert Reagan and her life outside the limelight, including her frustrating tenure as a faculty member at Indiana University.
Farrell speaks frankly about her tumultuous years at the Met, where her head-to-head confrontations with Sir Rudolph Bing brought her promising operatic career to an abrupt close after five seasons. While she loved singing the music of Verdi, Mascagni, and Giordano, Farrell reveals that she never reconciled herself to the life of a diva, preferring the friendliness of show business to the aloofness of the opera world.
Populated with such figures as Leonard Bernstein, Arturo Toscanini, Maria Callas, Ethel Merman, Mabel Mercer, and Carol Burnett, this engaging memoir takes the reader from backstage at the Met to behind-the-scenes of the Ed Sullivan Show, providing a fascinating view of opera and the entertainment industry. Eileen Farrell's legion of fans will delight in her inviting story of a career that was like no other singer's.
Customer Reviews:
Can't help liking.......2002-04-04
Classical, jazz, and pop singer Eileen Farrell comes across as a down-to-earth, generous, happy, and satisfied person in this book. What's not to like?
Couldn't Help Reading.......2001-06-26
Thank you, Eileen Farrell, for a wonderful career and for your candor in telling your very personal and inspiring story. I couldn't put the book down! As a professional singer myself, I found your experiences from your innocence at the first audition to your regular radio show moving and encouraging. Your book is as honest and refreshing as your performances and a must-read for even those with no interest in opera.
Farrell biography fine. How about a sequel?.......2001-03-19
Like another reviewer I found the biography too short. Surely Miss Farrell could divulge with her writer's help more anecdotes. And SURELY Sony/CBS could re-release more of her albums, particulary the Puccini Arias. Thank God there are historical recordings available, for which, unfortunately, Miss Farrell doesn't get royalties. I would happily send her a check anytime.
a fun read.......2000-09-26
Do not confuse this witty, sparkling memoir with the stilted, egocentric ("I" this and "I" that) memoirs you may have encountered. Farrell, one of the Met's most underused artists - yet one of its greatest, writes with charm and style that enthrall the reader making us wish she had easily written a book twice as long. Brava! Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys a great read and "meeting" a great lady.
A marvelous biography of an outstanding performer........2000-03-03
Eileen Farrell is one of the most gifted and celebrated American singers of the twentieth century. She is both a classically trained dramatic soprano and a talented songstress of pop songs and the blues. Can't Help Singing: The Life Of Eileen Farrell is a superbly crafted memoir in which she shares candid reminiscences about her professional career and her personal life. With humor and affection she surveys her New England childhood, her sudden success at the age of twenty starring in her own CBS radio show, dubbing for Eleanor Parker in the MGM movie "Interrupted Melody", her many guest appearances on television, and her operatic work, including an historic debut at the Metropolitan Opera in Alceste in 1960. Eileen also recollects her sometimes troubled marriage of forty years to New York police officer Robert Reagan and her frustrating tenure as a faculty member at Indiana University. In this wonderful memoir we meet the famous figures of music who were her contemporaries, fellow performers, and associates from Leonard Bernstein to Maria Callas, from Ethel Merman to Carol Burnett. Can't Help Singing is a marvelous biography that will hold great interest and appeal for her many fans and for students of 20th Century American music.
