After reading this book, I was amazed that the events in the main character's life were so familiar to my own life as an American born East Indian. This book was a very easy read that portrays the struggles and blessings of being a 1st generation Indian living in the America. It also allows the non-Indian to learn more about the culture and gives a different perspective that many will find refreshing and intriguing. Definitely a great book to read or to add to one's book club!

This book was missing pages 65 to 96. Just noticed this when using it. Book itself was okay but the pages missing were of beer bottles of which I have a few and wanted to check know that I am retired and have the time to devote to this hobby.

I've purchased several tie dye books and DVDs, this is my primary "go to" book. Author does a fantastic job:

1. Tells you at a high level the end-to-end process of tie dying

2. Has text, accompanied by black and white photos on how to tie.

3. Has at least one color photo of each finished tie dye project.

You will understand how to tie dye several different types of patterns, and be successful at your first attempt, if you follow the information and advice.

This book was the best! I bought four, two historic, the other way to in-depth and not explanitary enough in simple, quick and easy terms- that was the one AMAZON asked me to write about... but I chose to write about this one instead! This book led me ( mother of a two year old boy-meaning-bath time reading only and dented attention span) by the hand - in easy pease lemon squeezy mode - to instruct 15 or more mothers AND their children at a nursery school! Thank you for applying yourself in sharing the knowledge.. for quick answers and quick easy read before the tie dye project- BUY THIS ONE!

Good, but not good enough.......2005-01-03

Virginia has a good starter book for tie-dye, but like the majority of tie-dye content - only skims the surface. I prefer Jacquard's "Tie Dye To Die For & Batik You Can't Resist" book at $5.95 vs. this how-to book. To be fair, I would purchase it to see her lovely tie-dye work, but as a "how-to" I might look elsewhere.

Best starter book.......2004-12-28

This book was the best starter book I've found on tie-dye. The steps are easy to follow and many resources are given on creating great tie-dye from scratch. I've met the author at craft festivals where they show the clothes. They are amazing people and create incredible artwork. Better than anything out there. We are exposed to thousands of chemicals in furniture, clothes, cleaning products, air, food, water. For babies' sensitive, developing bodies these chemicals can pose life long developmental problems and introduce illness and disease. There are many choices you can make as a parent to reduce and eliminate your child's exposure to harmful chemicals and this book shares those. Most are simple choices like choosing non-toxic paints and using natural household cleaners. Others, like paying a little more to buy an organic mattress to avoid the harmful fire retardant chemicals (recently banned in California) on conventional mattresses, may seem harder. But what wouldn't you do to protect the health and well-being of the most precious person in your life? I'd do anything with in my ability.

This book has been a constant reference for me since having my baby. It's an invaluable resource. If your pregnant or planning a baby, buy it now.

Mothers & Others for a Livable Planet, presents Guide to Natural Baby Care by Mindy Pennybacker Aisha Ikramuddin. 4 out of 5 Stars!!

Overall, I found it to be a fantastic read, enjoyed the layout, and the freedom from seeing naked, or semi naked pregnate ladies. The book mentioned alot of things and this is the book that can go with you during your prengancy and after. It goes over designing a baby room, choosing products for your baby, and how to take care of the baby (i.e. bath, change diaper, etc).

I did find it to fall short in the area of "alternative" parenting or "village" parenting wherein the children are encouraged to sleep with the parents, have only breast milk, carrying a baby in a wrap/syrong, raising vegan children, etc etc, but aside from all of this, I'd recommend the book and I would purchase it myself.

Leaves out a lot...........2003-04-13

While this book does have many resources for parents trying to incorporate non-toxic and environmentally-friendly practices into their parenting, it assumes a very traditional Western approach to parenting, one in which one of the biggest jobs new parents face is acquiring the right STUFF to parent. Although there is a lot of information on cribs, there are few recommendations for parents who might want to co-sleep or have a family bed, such as three-sided cribs that attach to the parent's bed, or equipment to make the family bed safer. The book presents the pros and cons of cloth diapers vs. disposables but does not mention anything about natural infant hygiene or elimination communication. Even the cloth diaper section is pretty skimpy, about a page and a half. Nor is there much information on baby carrying and wearing products, such as the huge variety of fabric slings now available.

It's not that parents who want to protect the enviroment need to adopt all of these practices, but a book that is supposed to offer 'safe, practical and affordable baby care' for 'a livable planet' should at least mention some of these options in some depth and help make parents aware of them. This seems especially important in that these choices will determine what and how much you need to buy for your baby. If you plan to keep your baby in the same room or bed with you, you won't need worry about stripping lead paint in the baby's room. If you plan to use an infant potty after naps, you may not need to invest in a changing table. If you wear your baby in a sling for most of her first 18 months of life, you may not need a stroller, bassinett, playpen, walker or rocker.

Use this book as a helpful guide to finding good, natural baby products once you've researched the most eco-friendly parenting practices (somewhere else).

I am not to good with words but this book is great for anyone that loves their child as well as the environment. It has websites all through the book if you want to buy some eco-friendly products. I really enjoyed this book and have learned alot from it.

Not for the "Natural" Parent.......2006-04-12

erroneous feeding advice in this book:
feed an infant on demand, but not more often than every 1.5 hours, don't let baby use the breast as a pacifier , offer 1-2 ounces of water a day to a newborn while you establish your milk supply, an infant needs to learn how to drink from a bottle, humans wean naturally between 9 and 12 months of age.

The author advices the use of Gerber brand baby cereal throughout the book. Makes me wonder if he is getting a kick back.

The book does not discuss the idea of delaying or abstaining from vaccinations, it advises getting all vaccinations on schedule.

The book does not discuss safe co-sleeping, it just says don't do it.

It has a long section supposedly weighing the advantages of disposable and cloth diapers, but really advocating the use of disposable- but not cheap generics.

The author seems to also favor circumcision.

I am sure the author had good intentions in writing this advise down, and at the time of publication it may have been the best advise around. But for today's parent interested in "natural" parenting there are much better resources out there.

A must read!.......2003-10-01

Everything that parents need to know to provide a healthy nursery. A wealth of knowledge. Great tips that we should all be aware of. I would highly recommend owning this book. Can't wait for Dr. Pottkotter's next book!

A lavish and insightful account of Winnaretta Singer's life.......2005-03-18

This is a rigorous, lengthy and joyous account of the complex and remarkable life of Winnaretta Singer. One cannot but appreciate and be refreshed by the dual perspective of Kahan, a scholar and a distinguished concert pianist well known for her dedication to new music. Kahan attractively presents history through stories -- all meticulously documented. In Music's Modern Muse, Kahan offers a tome to performers and composers, particularly the up-and-coming, and to all lovers of art who care about the "modern" in art history. The photographs and appendices (particularly the documentation of selected salon concerts) are quite extraordinary.

Useful reference source, but a little uncritical.......2004-06-01

It's tough writing about someone you admire. It makes you let down your critical guard, makes you a bit too forgiving of things you ordinarily would not be. This is the big flaw of Kahan's book for me. Kahan goes out of her way to portray Winnaretta Singer as largely apolitical in a politically fraught climate. Given Singer's close acquaintances with people like Poincaré, Anna de Noailles and the rest, this is hard to believe. I'm not saying Singer was clearly of the Right or the Left; like several members of Parisian high culture at the time, Singer's politics couldn't be placed conveniently in one type or another. But this isn't the same as apolitical. It's one thing to shun politics; it's quite another to hold ambiguous political beliefs.

For example, Kahan writes: "By this point Ezra Pound had already begun to write his pro-Fascist manifestos; [Olga] Rudge showed them to Winnaretta, who found them 'very well done *indeed*.' The most generous interpretation here is that Winnaretta, adamantly apolitical, only wanted to compliment Rudge's lover."

Yes, that's a very generous interpretation. A less generous one would be that there were things in Pound's tracts that Singer found appealing. It's only understandable that Kahan would shy away from such readings, though; no one likes Fascism. But we don't have to label Winnaretta Singer a Fascist just because she liked Pound's Fascist texts. We can say that, like many intellectuals, Singer was attracted to *some* of the tenets of Fascism. Disturbing, yes, but probably closer to the truth than Kahan's black-and-white portrayal.

Another example: "The recital at Winnaretta's was, in fact, a run-through for the grand concert that Rudge and Münch would give at the Fascist Institute of Culture in Genoa in November of 1934. [P] Winnaretta seemed completely oblivious to the implications of being involved in crypto-Fascist musical activities. It was surely due more to a form of willful blindness than to any political stance on her part."

Again, being willfully blind is not the same as being apolitical. To be apolitical is to refuse to participate; to be willfully blind is to refuse to criticize. If Singer was as smart as Kahan says (and I think she was), then it's doubtful that Singer would have been "completely oblivious" to anything.

Avoiding clear-cut, black-and-white understandings of history is the hardest thing to do. Many times it feels like evasiveness; it makes the scholar feel like he or she is skirting the issue. I'm sure there were many things about Winnaretta Singer that were politically and morally admirable; but I find it hard to believe that a Princesse operating in such a Right-wing institution as the postwar Parisian haute culture would be this thoroughly innocent of the faults that were so prevalent among her fellow aristocrats.

Dry as a Bone........2004-05-14

I picked up this book at a book signing by the author at Lincoln Center in New York City this past winter. It seemed an interesting read about an interesting woman. This was not the case. The book reads more like a student's college paper than a biography. Mistakes and typos abound! The book also needed the talents of a good editor as the author can be frequently redundant. True, the book has some great pics, but they are often marred by poor reproductions. True, Ms. Singer did lead a fascinating life in Paris during the belle epoque, but she seems to be one of those people who were famous simply because of the artists they knew and not because they ever truly contributed anything. She held salons, but often paid no attention to the famous guests she was entertaining. The author dances very nimbly around the fact that her subject was not a very well-like woman, even by some of her closest confidants. And her husband, despite numerous protests by Ms. Kahan to the contrary, was a composer of dubious talents. It all reads like one of those stories where the wife has a ton of money and spends it to promote the mediocre talents of a loved one, then basks in whatever adulation is received, like a battleaxe of a stage mom that no one can say no to. The book is also rife with tons of filler - party guest lists, a cataloging of music played here, there and everywhere, an overlong bibliography. I am very certain that Ms. Kahan did an immense amount of research while writing this book, but not for one moment does its subject come to life. Ms. Singer appears like one of those folks who happen to be in the right place at the right time and became famous for all the wrong reasons. Doubtless the woman did something for the cause of music, but the book, and Ms. Kahan's writing style, is dry as a bone. The book is also exorbitantly overpriced.

Buy it, read it, love it........2004-04-20

A wonderful, well-researched history of a great patron of the arts in France during the latter part of the 19th and the early 20th century. The author takes us on an exquisite trip through the period in history when literature, art and music were French and France was the center of the artistic universe. You can only be jealous of the heroine of this history - the daughter of sewing machine inventor Isaac Singer - who could have been the ultimate name dropper. Degas, Picasso, Proust, Diaghilev, Stravinsky, Turgenyev, Rubinstein, Balanchine, and on and on and on. She even managed to hire Poincare, later the Prime Minister, as her lawyer, and attended the wedding of the parents of Price Ranier of Monaco, whose father was a relative of her husband. Through painstaking research involving what must have been thousands of letters, newspaper articles, diary pages and other sources, the author has turned her years of work into a readable story of the development of modern classical music. It would have been easy to get lost in the Princesse's lesbian sexual preference to the detriment of the story. Luckily, the author, although she makes reference to the issue when it is important, does not get confused by the pop psychologist's attempt to turn everything into sexual warfare. For that effort, and for the painstaking research, Ms. Kahan deserve great praise and our undying gratitude.

I was absolutely blown away by this book, a true insight into the life of Winnaretta Singer, and an incredibly fun read. This is a definite must have.

A very nice collection.......2006-03-05

As a jewish girl myself, the title of this book interested me. so many of the themes and ideas in this book were important and relevant to my life. some of the stories and poems are not as good as others, but many show promising talent from the jewish women of america.

excellent colllection of heart felt personal stories........1998-09-02

Probably the best and most complete description of what it means to grow up Jewish and female in America during the twentieth century. I especially liked the very personal and well written account of a death in the family written by Jennifer Futernick
