Unique among collections of letters, these never before published communications have not been completely read by family members since the early twentieth century. For years they lay stored in an attic and came to light only after the death of a direct family descendent. Not Just for Scholars.......2002-07-02

Via the medium of personal letters written between 1820 and 1867, the author has succesfully brought to life an era in the history of our early republic. She has defly connected them into a cohesive narrative. Her historical insights enhance the story. What I liked best was that it is a good read for the general public.

Eve Anderson has created a most remarkable work with A Breach of Privilege. It is simultaneously a fascinating and truly authentic account of daily life in the early 19th-century, an engrossing chronicle of several generations of an amazing American family, and an eye-opening history of a young United States.

The events and personalities of A Breach of Privilege virtually leap off the page, and become as familiar to the reader as those of any novel. In fact, it's difficult to believe that the members of one family could have been witness to as many remarkable events in American history as were the Cilleys, but it is all true. From the quiet hills of New England to the marbled halls of the Capitol and dusty battlefields of the Civil War, their thoughts, prayers and fears come alive as can only happen in private letters.

Anderson has done a wonderful job of weaving delightful anecdotes and insightful facts into the narrative, blending them naturally with the Cilley letters themselves. As a result the lives of the characters flow seamlessly with the events of the time, an era in American history that is little studied and only vaguely understood today. It was a time of tremendous turmoil and remarkable change, and it all comes to life through the words of a Jacksonian Congressman, his pious wife, and their sons, officers in the Union Army and Navy during the Civil War.

The letters are transcribed exactly as they were written, complete with spelling and grammatical errors, by the members of this singular family. They speak of a time when death was as common as life, when children were lost with frightening regularity, when the horrors of war were secondary to its glory, and when the survival of the nation was all but certain. This is a book of history, authentic to the last detail, but beyond that it is a fascinating story.

This book is a pretty good history for bolt action military rifles, however a serious collector will find little value in this book.

Great Book.......2005-07-01

This is an excellent text and hits the target dead on (right in the old 'X'). It captures the fun and spirit of "milsurp" collecting and covers all of the major areas in sufficient detail for a typical collector.

It's true that if you're a specialist collector in a particular area you will want additional reference materials--but this book does not set out to be the encyclopedia of firearms minutia. Instead, it's an enjoyable look into the collecting world. Having said that, it still provides a goodly supply of solid details that match my other (more encylopedia-like) reference works.

It focuses on the types and classes of rifles that collectors are likely to come across in today's environment, and stays right on topic throughout. It also has a few pages on rifles that you won't likely come across... but would sure like to!

Filled throughout with excellent photographs, and each major rifle's "stats" are called out in a highlighted box.

The physical production of the book is beyond reproach--you really are getting fine quality in a book that will last. The writing is easily accessible, though at times a bit too chatty for my tastes. Aside from a few minor typographical errors (reference to an antique Winchester Model 1985, for example) the read is enjoyable and just plain fun. With a good editor the 2nd edition will be a true classic.

Excellent book on collecting bolt actions!.......2003-10-27

I bought this book after collecting rifles for a few years, it is in fact the ONLY contemporary book to cover the history and development of all the major manufacturers and models in such detail and with great pictures too. The chapters of the book are well planned and as I find myself exploring a new area of collecting, I read the relevant chapter again. After collecting German bolt actions for some time I got interested in Lee-Enfields and the discussion and pictures of these rifles was very helpful in getting a good coverage of the rifles and models. It can also be helpful to the more experienced collectors, some time ago I came across a rifle in a store marked as a Greek Mauser. I know what a Greek Mauser looks like and this was not one, it is marked 'Breda 1927' on the side of the receiver. After perusing Mr. Scarlata's book I came across a whole section including pictures of the rifle, it is a Mannlicher Schoenauer 1903/14 rifle. Scarlata explains how in 1926 the Greeks signed an agreement with Societa Anonima Ernesto Breda of Brescia Italy for 100,000 of these rifles which were delivered in 1929. He also mentions that there is some speculation that the rifles were in fact produced by Steyr and assembled and finished in Italy so as to bypass restrictions imposed on the Austrians by the Allies after WWI. If you are at all interested in the history and development of bolt action rifles you need this book.

Collecting Classic Bolt Action Military Rifles.......2002-10-24

I couldn't disagree more with the earlier review. This book is quality work. Mr. Scarlata does a good job describing the primary weapons of the major and minor powers of the late 19th to the middle 20th century. He then goes on to describe the major variants of each type. As Scarlata desribes the firearms, he points out with word and photo the unique features that he and, hence, you will find interesting. I almost didn't buy the book because of the earlier review. I'm glad I did. If you want to know everything about every variation of the US Krag get Brophy's book. If you want good meaty info on most of the world's bolt rifles here is the place to start. By the time you need more information on your rifle of interest, just flip to the comprehensive bibliography in the back of the book.

Broad but shallow.......2002-04-26

This book is a broad and moderately detailed history of the development of the military bolt action. For someone just getting interested in the subject, it would provide a useful general guide, but it lacks sufficient detail and depth to be useful as a reference for anyone other than the most casual collector. In fact, I was quite dissapointed by the paucity of information related to actually collecting these rifles, given that that is what the book purports to be. If the book were titled as a history it would certainly have fulfilled my expectations, but even with that it is too expensive for what it delivers. I returned mine.

Getting the Creative Juices flowing.......2005-09-12

This is one of those books that helps those who are only semi-creative get some ideas on how to make projects their own. Most of the patterns are not overly complex. Some of them are going to seem pretty challenging for folks who are not too far into their scroll-sawing avocation. The photography is worth the price of the book. Different treatments of the various projects, different textures, different color combos, all help the craft mechanic to become a possibility thinker. The book presumes some familiarity with scrolling. It's not a book for a rank beginner, but most of the patterns can be accomplished by a person who has learned to cut a two dimensional project with inside and outside cuts. For those reasons alone, it's a good one to have on your shelf. Highly recommended.

Interesting designs.......2003-06-23

I recommend this book. The designs are interesting. Very thin ornaments when you're finished cutting them. All come with directions/suggestions on how to paint them.

Hard to Say.......2002-07-07

I was a little disappointed in this book. It is actually smaller than I expected. The section on Current Therapies for Progres- sive MS is about two pages long and basically says.....there are, currently, no treatments for progressive MS. The rest of the book deals w/ symptom management, most of which I was already familiar with (which drugs were regularly prescribed for which complaints, gimmicks that were helpful in dealing w/ incontinence, how to incorporate a bowel regimen, etc.)
In other words, I found nothing new in this book: just a lot of things to do to make us feel like all is not lost. Unfortunately, filling my day with regimens and symptom management activities is not what I call Meeting the Challenge. I think of it more as surrendering to the Drudgery. The book didn't give me cause to feel hopeful nor did it give me any new information that I could take w/ me to my next neurologist appointment. I was disappointed.

This book is well researched, and organized. It is helpful, and supportive in coming to terms with a devastating diagnosis.I am buying a copy for a friend because, I have no intention of loaning mine out.

Sincere advice with one little problem.......2005-12-24

I don't question John Tesh's intentions in writing this book. It's all common sense advice. The chapters are called Dream, Purpose, Passion, Risk, Faith, Courage, Fulfillment, Legacy. He discusses walking away from Entertainment Tonight to pursue the music he loved, and therein lies the problem. When he discusses "walking away from a seven figure salary," my reaction is "he had a seven figure salary to walk away from." Yes, he took a risk. Yes, he's been ridiculed as often as he's been applauded. Good, heartfelt advice, only slightly tainted by the fact that it was a lot easier (financially) for John Tesh to pursue his dream than it is for most of the people who will read this book. When he gets to the "do what you love, and maybe the money will follow" section, it's a little insulting...even though I'm sure he didn't intend it that way.

Compelling Journey Through Faith.......2001-07-11

Benedek's journey more deeply into Judaism is well-written and interesting. Especially fascinating were her observations and participation in the Orthodox community as part of a journey that ultimately leads her to a Conservative Jewish congregation. There were times that the book dragged and became redundant. For example, Benedek goes on and on and on about her therapy sessions. This part could have been condensed so that the reader understood that therapy was important to her journey without having to read every detail of every therapy session she ever attended. She also wasn't completely clear about the kinds of Orthodox communities she was hanging out with -- she does not fully embrace ultra-orthodox lifestyles, but had she ever considered modern Orthodoxy? This was never addressed, she just went from ultra-Orthodox to Conservative, but modern-Orthodox is a category between the two. Even with these criticisms, however, the book is a compelling read and Benedek portrays an honest, thoroughly questioning journey into faith.

Spiritual Searching.......2001-05-29

The best thing about this deeply felt memoir is the way the author combines several searches that normally don't go together. Her highly successful psychoanalysis dovetails with a quest for spiritual awakening and rebirth, and we can understand why Freud and Judaism go together. The book also has a lot to say about the conflict felt by a highly educated, secular, intellectual woman between her need to be in the world and her desire to participate in Orthodox Jewish practices that still relegate women to a separate sphere. Benedek's negotiation of this strait is fascinating.

Seeing Light.......2001-04-29

When she lived in and wrote of the intensely spiritual Navajo world, Benedek felt herself turn introspective. A horrific brush with loss of vision precipitated what became a search for her place in relationship to the divine. The beginning of this book thrusts the reader with lightspeed into the center of her search, through psychoanalysis and religious education, for the life of devotion and spirituality she ultimately crafts. Benedek's slick, smart writing, her longing to reorient herself after a bad relationship and a life she deemed soulless and her lucky, lucky life ever since are fascinating. (She found her husband through a writing assignment on hackers). Benedek is enviable and inspirational. And she can write!

One can't help feeling awe at ms. Benedek's struggle to create a life that is truly modern and truly religious. Her book compelled me from cover to cover. She is an entertaining, gifted writer who uses her intelligence compassionately.

Freud Lives (Again).......2001-04-19

Psychoanalysis has been under withering fire for the past decade. But anyone who reads of Emily Benedek's analysis in this book will have to fight the urge to run out and look up the telephone number of her analyst. You are brought into the rarified air of a very deep and meaningful friendship and are reminded of the supreme gift of good listening.
