Sidney Reilly was probably the greatest spy the world has ever known. He lived on his wits and thrived on danger, using women ruthlessly and killing where necessary--and unnecessary. A womaniser, he had four wives-- three marriages of which were bigamous-- and numerous mistresses from New York to the Ukraine. From the gentlemen's clubs of Edwardian England to the forbidding gates of the Kremlin itself, he influenced world history with coups of extraordinary magnitude that required skill- and audacity- rarely seen since. Like the fictional Bond he would later inspire, he would make navigating Soviet Russia as a British agent seem like a walk in the park.

After four years working for MI6 and being exposed by the Soviets for his role in the plot to overthrow Lenin, he mysteriously disappeared in Russia in 1925. By the 1930s the press had turned Reilly into a household name, dubbing him 'Master Spy'- the myth was cast. It was upon this myth and the first hand access to British intelligence records on Reilly that Ian Fleming (himself a secret service desk officer during the Second World War) was inspired to create James Bond.

Until now major questions have remained unanswered about Reilly. During his life Reilly laid an almost impenetrable fog of mystery and deception around his origins as he adopted and shed one identity after another. Those who entered this ruthlessly compartmentalised life knew only what Reilly himself had told them. Andrew Cook's startling biography- itself a detective story of epic proportions- cuts through the myths revealing for the first time Reilly's true identity, his precarious 'disappearance' in 1925, using new, independent and expert photographic analysis of the photographs of Reilly's corpse to ascertain their authenticity, and finally providing concrete proof that he was executed by the Russians in 1925. His most sensational discovery of all, however, is the identity of a close former colleague in MI6 circles whose collaboration with the Russians aided his entrapment.

This is probably one of the best documented and solid accounts ever to appear about Sidney Reilly, a Russian Jew and a short time SIS agent, codenamed ST1, who became famous thanks to numerous books and articles that have been poping out for the past eighty years. The very last publication - three newspapers and six full pages long - appeared in Moscow in January 2003. Vladimir Abarinov, Washington correspondent of the KGB newspaper Sovershenno Sekretno, who now lives in Arlington, VA, where Rick Ames resided before his arrest in 1994, praised... Professor Spence for his work. Abarinov never mentioned Cook's book and tried to assure his readers that Spence's is the only TRUE account.
Andrew Cook, a former aide to Britain's Secretary of State for Defense George Robertson, has done a marvellous job. He examined passport and birth records, academic transcripts, military records, Russian intelligence files, British intelligence files and other primary source to determine the most likely truth in each case. His work would be almost flawless, if not for one little mistake: Mr Cook chose Gordon Brook-Shepherd and Edward Gazur as sources for Alexander Orlov's quotations. Orlov (Nikolsky/Feldbin), a former NKVD official (never a General, but once Senior Major of State Security) was a notorious lier, who NEVER said a word of truth. Brook-Shepherd, generally a very reliable author, who died this year, made a great mistake with Orlov. Gazur, a retired FBI Special Agent, clearly chose to follow Orlov's path: to lie non-stop without looking back. Therefore, allegations about Maria Zakharchenko and Georgy Radkevich are not correct. Andrew Cook also missed to name ALL participants of the drama, called operation TRUST. On the other hand, it was not his aim. As a result, we finally have a book (first time after 1925), which qualifies as the definitive version of the life of this famous person. Hayden Peake says that 'Cook's account is both scholarly and fascinating reading', and so it is.
N.B. The BROKER was a cryptonym given to Reilly by the Tsarist Okhrana, whose agents shadowed him in St.Petersburg. It may be interesting to note that Ukraine, seeking NATO membership, invited Mr Cook to present his book there. It was a clever move as Shlomo Rosenblum, as Reilly was known before the age of 18, came from Odessa.

I had read other articles about Glock pistols before buying this book, and I found this interesting, but it's notoriously not up to date since it was written some years ago, and it is based in Glocks from the first generation. Most of the information wasn't very new to me. It's weakest point is that it's an old edition and Glock has evolved. Just my humble opinion.

Published in 1992, before the advent of the full line and subcompacts, this is a useful resource for Glock devotees, critics, writers, and perhaps most of all, the media. The "debate" about Glocks still rages and misconceptions still abound more than a decade after it was written. Covers the genesis and history of Glocks, the media fiasco, early law
enforcement resistence, the original 9mm models, Glock pistols from the inside out, how they function, maintenance, design features, operational advantages, early accessories and a small resource list. Useful both for the casual owner and the aficianado as well. You should come away with an understanding of how ignorant Glock bashing really is.

I'm an avid handgunner with an extensive collection of handguns. It was only quite recently that I got turned on to Glock Pistols, the so called "plastic guns." This book provides in depth information on Glock handguns from history, firearm performance, and modification. This is a must have for every Glock owner.

Best Book on Glock Pistols that I've found........2003-01-30

A great in depth look at all the elements of the Glock Pistol. I just wish that he (Kasler) would have available an update on such things as Models that have been added since the last writing and the updated list of police and governmental agencies that have adopted this gun since the writing. I know a large number in my own state that are not included so the total must be staggering. Good Book.

GLOCK: The New Wave In Combat Handguns.......2002-01-02

I bought this book last year, it was a hell of a read! It's unfortunate that the author, Peter Alan Kasler, passed away last year. My respects go out to his partner & family. This book gives excellent reviews & history of one of the best pistols currently on the market, regardless of calibre. Peter Alan Kasler writes from a great deal of experience & understanding. The book - on hindsight - could've shown picture's in colour; black & white photo's never really did any firearm justice - perhaps just me being slightly picky? The book wasn't meant to be a massive catalogue covering every model 'Glock' manufacture, although I wouldn't have said NO, but it did cover the essential information that anyone, like myself, who has more than a passing interest in them would find extremely useful. I liked it. I recommend it wholeheartedly!!! Buy it.

A Brilliant Resource.......2005-05-19

I love this book! Years ago there was a paint store in my town located minutes from a large retirement community. I noticed that retired painters would congregate in the shop and pass the time talking about paint and techniques with the owner. I learned more from those gents that I could have ever picked up from those glossy books that promise all you'll ever need to know and more. This book reminds me of those afternoons. Filled with sensible information that you will not find elsewhere. I have been restoring and refinishing wood for more than 30 years, and when I have a problem I turn to my copy of this book first.

Im so glad to have a copy of this book again-I used to borrow it from the library-havent seen it in years, and have missed it BADLY!
It is just a fun read, besides having alot of great information presented in a really delightful manner.
Mr Grotz has a very low-to-the-ground type of style that is refreshing-he demistifies the entire subject of antique furniture and its care.
If you are dealing with MAJOR museum quality antiques-this aint the book for you, but if, like most of us, you are just collecting a houseful of affordable, cool 'old stuff'-this is THE book to have!

Great for do-it-yourselfers.......2001-12-05

This is a 'bible' for the average amateur and full of good tips for both the experienced and fussy wood worker. I've used it for more than 30 years. Whenever I have a problem I start my research with this book, and I usually come back to it again after looking at a number of other sources. There are suggestions that you'll not find anywhere else. The humor is a delight. However Grotz wrote most of this before the development of many current ideas about how to preserve antiques. I imagine that employing some of his suggestions might lead to a reduction in the market value of an item. However, I don't think it will ever lead to a reduction in your personal enjoyment of the piece.

I've used this book for 30 years - to learn about furniture, to learn about tools and, most of all, to learn how to finish, re-finish and repair furniture. It's an invaluable reference and guide with no pretentions. The drawings are excellent - you're not buying a lot of glossy photos of unaffordable furniture. Grotz's style is folks-y and sometimes coy, but it doesn't get in the way of the wealth of information he shares.

I first came across this book many years ago when it was first published. I have used it many times. It's full of good information. If you are looking for steps 1,2,3 and specific directions, there are others out there but this is book is packed with many facts and debunks a lot of myths regarding refinishing and care of furniture. I've loaned this book out a multitude of times upon request. I didn't get it back the last time so now I've had to re-purchase a copy for my own use.

I am a divorced mom and have two kids. My ex and I had a terrible time communicating after the divorce and I could tell that my kids were really suffering as a result. I decided to buy this kit and things have improved dramatically. First of all, when the item arrived, my daughter's eyes lit up when she saw the calendar and the stickers. She ran off to her room to put it together and raced out when she was finished to show me the schedule she has with me and my ex. It was one of the first times since the divorce that I had really seen her happy, so I felt like this product had shined some light into her life again. Then I decided to start using the Mom and Dad Pad to communicate with my ex. I was skeptical at first that it would make any difference, but it did. I can say, without a doubt, it helped more than all the therapy sessions we had that we spent a small fortune on. It's an easy thing to use. It just seemed to help us be more civil to each other. The books have been great too.

Best thing to buy if you're getting divorced and have kids.......2001-11-04

If you are getting divorced and have kids or you know someone going through a divorce, this is one of the best products on the market. Do yourself a favor and buy it! There are lots of books for people and kids dealing with divorces, but there are very few products which actually help people cope with divorces. This kit contains a calendar plus stickers (mom stickers, dad stickers, holidays, etc.)so you and your kids can actually see their schedules. It's an incredibly helpful tool that gives kids structure, something they desparately need when they're getting divorced. The kit also contains a great communication pad for parents---an easy-to-use fill-in-the-blank form that makes writing to an ex a much easier task. And it makes an automatic copy for your files. Then there are two books, one for parents, and one for kids, that help you with LOTS of issues commonly dealt with in divorces. The nice thing is that there's lots of information packed into a small book, but it's not overwhelming.

Biography? No. Love letter? Yes........2006-01-27

This book is not a biography but a love letter from a fan. Basically, it is a manifesto or treatise on the 'meaning' of Scott's music, according to the author. If there was as many books about Scott Walker as there is of the Bealtes, Reed's book would probably not have been published. 'Deep Sahde of Blue: the Scott Walker Story' is closer to a functional biography although it mainly focuses on the 1960s & the Walker Brothers and it reads like stereo instructions. Fans of Noel Scott Engel will have to wait longer for a revealing monograph. Hopefully one day we will see a book that sheds light on Scott's life during the 70s--those experiences that influenced 'Climate of Hunter' may prove to be the darkest. Allusions to drug addiction on 'Climate of Hunter' leave questions regarding Scott's mysterious years in the 70s, during which time he sold out to the horrible country pop craze that brought us Kenny Rogers and early Olivia Newton-John, with determinedly repellent albums like 'Stretch' and 'We Had it All.'

Reveals nothing new about the artist or his music..........2000-11-13

Funny thing about Scott Walkers voice-- it is so nuanced and heavy with subtext, it invites you to project on it your own feelings, memories, and experiences. This book is author Jeremy Reed's personal, subjective projections on the deeper meanings of Walker's art. When you're finished (if you make it that far), you'll have a good idea of where Jeremy Reed is coming from, but you'll have gleaned nothing useful about Walker.

Despite what the jacket description may lead you to believe, this is not the story of Scott Walker's life, nor an honest attempt to shed light on the creation of his music. Instead, we get a series of esoteric, rambling essays that attempt to trace the themes in the artist's work

In defense of this book, I suppose it should be noted that the subject is a recluse with very few published interviews. One also presumes he has few friends or associates from whom to obtain revealing anecdotes or funny Scott stories. Certainly Reed is unashamed about having done no real research on the subject. He complains many times in the book about the lack of available information on the man. Never does he seem to consider actually going out and getting some-- that would probably take away from his "me" time. In fact, the author makes no real attempt to piece together the existing information about the artist in a coherent way. Instead, he jumps around through time and barely touches on the events in Scott Walker's life that might have informed his music. We do get lots of meta-physical speculations on Scott Walker's personal psychology, none of which can be backed up by anything other than the author's opinion.

There are most certainly themes in Walker's music, and exploring them is definitely worthwhile. However, the author literally attempts to put himself in Walker's brain, explaining on behalf of the artist what he really means in an incredibly pompous and utterly baseless way. At times, his observations and assumptions are laughable, other times annoying.

And, like this review, it just goes on and on...

Identity Theft focuses on the life and writing of Avraam Uri Kovner. As one of the fiery Jewish nihilists of his generation, variously a critic, author, and bank embezzler, Kovner embodies the problem of identity as a series of translations across cultural boundaries. Kovner, who initiated modern Hebrew criticism, published two novels in Russian as well as a weekly column in a widely read Russian newspaper. He forged a bank check and became notorious in the Russian press as an example of the danger integration of the Jews represented to Russian society. From prison, and later in exile, Kovner defended the Jews in a series of letters to Fedor Dostoevsky and Vasilii Rozanov, both of whom vilified Jews in their writings. Ostracized by both the Jewish and Russian communities, he mimed and at the same time undermined rigid stereotypes of Jewish and Russian behavior, pointing out the uneasy interdependence of the two cultures he inhabited.
