Book Description
The Queen’s Commission empowers an Ambassador to promote "relationships of friendship, good understanding and harmonious intercourse." Richard Faber sought these objectives during his distinguished career in the Overseas Service. After Oxford and war service in the Royal Navy, Athens was the first link in the chain of cities which took him to Baghdad, Paris, the capitals of various states in British and Francophone Africa, Washington, Salisbury (now Harare), The Hague, Cairo, and finally Algiers as ambassador. This book looks at his career against the backdrop of the end of empire and Britain’s changing status within post-war society.

I was born in or near Paris, in the year 1844. My father was a fairly prosperous man of business?a general merchant, to be precise, who dealt largely in shoes; but when I was about ten years old, my mother, in consequence of certain domestic differences, took me to live with her at Montreux, and other places in Switzerland, where I was educated.

So we started off into the unknown, with no more provision or equipment than if we were going for a stroll of a mile or so. Classic adventure tale.......2001-12-11
This book details the life of a shipping investor shipwrecked off Australia's coast in the early 1800s. He struggles with loneliness, develops relations with indigenous peoples, weds an aboriginal wife, has children -- and all the while tries to find his way back to "civilization."
de Rougemont uses clear, inviting, inventive language to describe his triumphs and losses. No hidden meanings or complicated subtexts here; just a ripping good yarn based on this fellow's endless adventures. And no analytical coldness or floods of facts, either -- this guy lived fully and completely on every level and conveyed his triumphs and disappointments stoutly and directly.

Detailed Discussion of Enhancements, Color and Cut Make This Guide Exceptional. .......2007-06-11
"Colored Gemstones" is a beginners' guide to gemstones that aims to help consumers understand what types of gems are available, what to look for in determining value, and how to go about doing that. This book does not oversimplify the subject as some guides for beginners do. Author and gemologist Antoinette Matlins gives readers some preliminary guidance on how to familiarize yourself with a gemstone using a loupe and how to determine if it is well-cut. Then it is on to Part 2, which constitutes the bulk of the book and is a fount of essential and fascinating information.
First, the "4 C's" of color, clarity, cut, and carat, with particular emphasis on color and cut and how they relate to one another. Sample laboratory reports on gems are provided, so we see what a lab report can tell the consumer. The chapter on synthetic gems and enhancement treatments is particularly informative. The author describes common treatments and provides a very useful chart of treatments by gemstone. The chart lists treatments for 34 gem groups and indicates which treatments are typically used, seldom used, whether they are stable, and whether the treated gemstones require any special care, including which should avoid ultrasonic cleaners. Information on color enhancement spans several chapters.
A chapter on fraud and misrepresentation lists which gemstone treatments are acceptable practice and which are dishonest, with descriptions of the treatments, and a list of deceptive names often used to mislead customers. So we will know what our options are, the author lists gems by color, provides a list of gems not routinely enhanced for those who prefer natural stones, and a table of how much treated vs a natural stones differ in price. There is a detailed price guide for 21 groups of (faceted) gems, indicating what you may expect to pay for good to extra fine quality stones, wearability, and availability. Opal and synthetic price guides are separate. One chapter is dedicated to descriptions of about 40 gems, with data on hardness, chemical composition, wearability, and brilliance for each. Ms. Matlins concludes with specific advice on what to ask and look for when buying stones, what facts to make sure appear on your receipt, and tips for cleaning and caring for gems.
Having read Renee Newman's Gemstone Buying Guide, I find that Ms. Matlins' "Colored Gemstones" is more complete. This is primarily because the coverage of enhancements, synthetics, and price are more extensive in this book. Its discussions of how cut affects color are also better. That said, the "Gemstone Buying Guide" treats star and cat's eye stones more thoroughly and has a slight advantage in coverage of opal and jade. It provides more vital statistics, including refractive index, cleavage, and specific gravity. "Colored Gemstones" biggest shortcoming is the scarcity of photographs. There is a 16-page insert of color photos, but most of the gems discussed are not pictured. The "Gemstone Buying Guide" has far more photos, but if you have to choose one book, I think you'll be happier with "Colored Gemstones" unless your interest is in cat's eye or star gems.
Informative but a lot of repetition.......2007-05-24
If you buy Jewellery and gem buying guide from the same author, you find it is a lot of repetition. However, to me this book is giving more information than the other one as the discussion of more focus on gemstone.
Informative.......2007-01-16
Quite enlightening. Particularly liked the guide for prices of gemstones as well as the uses of stones. Had I purchased this book before, I would have made more informed choices when buying gemstones. Would recommend to anyone buying any type of gemstone.
Very thorough & informative.......2006-11-17
Everything I needed to know to get started buying gemstones. Easy to read and very detailed; it helped me learn where the true value lies in these gems. More than I ever thought I'd learn!
Great Information, Very Helpful.......2006-11-15
I'm a novice at gemstones, but I found this book easy to read. It had all the information I needed to shop for gems! I'm sure people with more experience would also find this helpful.

Biography of a landscape architect.......2007-07-31
This is an excellent book detailing the life and works of one of Americas most important landscape architects. There is more information than you could possibly need about his youth, his training, his business, his philosophies and his projects. There are excellent photographs of his works which explain so much more than can be described by the written word. Recommended for students, professionals and those interested in learning about the man himself and his works. This is not a coffee table book.

great book for anyone who wants to learn to live with diabetes.......2007-01-04
I got this book for my mom, who is a diabetic. Great book for knowledge on how to live with diabetes.
Offering readers a complete and thorough understanding of diabetes.......2006-06-04
This completely revised and fully updated second edition of Mayo Clinic On Managing Diabetes: How To Prevent, Control And Live With Diabetes is drawn from the collective studies of the Mayo Clinic studies on diabetes prevention and care. Offering readers a complete and thorough understanding of diabetes, Mayo Clinic On Managing Diabetes includes in-depth research information on the pre-diabetes stage; the latest guidelines for testing blood sugar; selecting and using a glucose monitor; the value of health checkups; advances in insulin delivery; new medications for diabetes; the latest on transplantation; tips to achieve a healthier weight; advice for enjoying healthier foods; safe exercise strategies; avoiding serious complications arising from diabetes; reducing the risk of heart and blood vessel disease; recognizing and responding to diabetic emergencies; sexual issues for both men and women with diabetes; and unique issues for children with diabetes. Mayo Clinic On Managing Diabetes is very strongly recommended for all readers concerned with diabetes and searching for a comprehensive guide to its prevention, as well as for parents wishing to aide their children in prevention of juvenile diabetes.
A tremendous help; it may have literally saved my life........2003-12-09
When I first got this book, my blood sugar had leveled-out at about 300. I just couldn't lower my blood sugar, no matter how well I ate or how much I exercised. All my doctor could or would do was change my medication and order more tests for me. I didn't have medical insurance and I couldn't afford any more tests, or even doctors' visits; so I stopped seeing my doctor.
In this book, I was firmly advised NOT to exercise until my blood sugar was below 250; otherwise my body would react to the exercise by releasing even more sugar into my blood. After I stopped the exercise my blood sugar did start to slowly drop. I then carefully read the book from cover to cover, and gained a large amount of very useful information.
I also began doing "Tai Chi for Diabetes", which also appears to have helped.
Within a few weeks my blood sugar level dropped below 110. I then discontinued the medication my doctor had given me. For over a week now my blood sugar has been below 107; without taking any pills.
I've read a few other books on Diabetes, and they were all somewhat helpful; but "The Mayo Clinic on Managing Diabetes" was by far the most helpful and informative book I've read on the subject. I strongly recommend it.
A Vital Resource Guide.......2001-07-13
This book offers an interesting and completely comprehensible overview of diabetes. It is not a "how-to" book, nor does it pretend to be. Rather, it gives you the background information you need to better understand your care plan that your physician, dietician, and whomever else prepares with you. While there are many other volumes on the subject, I recommend this one as an essential resource for any living with diabetes or a diabetic.

Sociology: Concepts and Applications in a Diverse World (7th Edition)
ASIN: 0830832246 |
Book Description
"Jesus relocated, and calls us to follow . . . his creation became his neighborhood."Scott Roley was once an up-and-coming singer/songwriter in the contemporary Christian music scene, but then God called him to a different kind of ministry. He left his life of privilege, became a church pastor and moved into a disadvantaged neighborhood. There he began to learn hands-on what "loving your neighbor" required of him--social justice, community development and racial reconciliation. As a youth of the '60s, Roley attended the March on Washington and was captivated by Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for societal transformation. Now, as a community leader and activist, he is embodying the ideals that are needed to forge a just society. His work demonstrates how God uses faith-based organizations to change lives. Roley's life journey, told here with James Isaac Elliott, exemplifies Christian hope in caring for the disinherited and renewing our communities--one neighborhood at a time.
Customer Reviews:
A Dangerous Read (www.wordsntone.com).......2004-11-14
God's Neighborhood is chiefly a journey. Scott Roley, once a rising contemporary Christian music artist and song writer, reaches back to his childhood, moves us through his growing up years and on into his adult years, asking us to join him on a life journey, a spiritual journey. He pauses along the way, asking the questions, "What providence placed me here? What does God want me to learn?" Like he asked while living in Washington DC, "What providence placed me in a neighborhood close enough to Washington to view the Capital dome? What should I be learning, seeing, thinking?" But, Roley doesn't stop asking the question in Washington DC-he asks these questions at every turn, every venture throughout his life. Eventually, Christian music ministry gave way to a different kind of ministry. Roley pens it best, "God's Neighborhood is about understanding and participating in Christian community. It describes a response to the biblical mandate of care for the poor." In reading God's Neighborhood, we are asked to join the author as he leaves his life of privilege, then seeks church ministry, and eventually moves into a disadvantaged neighborhood. There, we learn with him and his friends (among whom is another famous Christian artist, Michael Card) what "loving your neighbor" actually means. What it means with feet and hands, namely community development and racial reconciliation. "We must look into the eyes of poverty," Roley exhorts, "and examine the heart, soul, and psyche of it. People aren't just in need of drug rehab, roof over their heads or decent food to eat. They also require the dignity of true and relevant education, affordable health care, and living wage opportunities." And yes, this from an Evangelical Christian. Roley writes, "The journey of our hearts into racial reconciliation and community renewal from Hard Bargain to Mount Hope is a moment-to-moment decision to place faith and trust in Christ. It is why we strive for the renewal of our streets, rehabilitation for our crumbling homes and lives, the revival of real relationships among the least and the lost, and redemption for all through our Savior Jesus." Roley invites us to share the same journey, a journey that exemplifies Christian hope in caring for the disinherited and renewing our communities, one neighborhood at a time. This book, although very easy to read and fast paced, is dangerous-a book, not for Christians who are faint-hearted, or comfortable in their complacency.
A great story filled with many challenges for all of us.......2004-06-18
Congratulations to IVP! And God bless the Empty Hands Fellowship. This is the book of the summer, a non-fiction reminder of what God's Kingdom should look and feel like. This is one of those rare books that makes you smile, cry and think at the same time.
Do not, however, be fooled by the title. This is not a story of a smiling middle-aged man in a cardigan sweater, sitting around entertaining his neighbors with his Martin six-string. This is a challenging account of one man and his family living in pursuit of God's grace in true community. And we are invited to join with his many friends to enter into that same pursuit of real connection.
With loving tenderness, Scott demonstrates the way we should be living with our brothers and sisters in Christ, as well as those who we are reluctant to call our neighbor. A vulnerable, transparent account documenting the trials and triumphs inherent in efforts of racial and relational reconciliation.
It took me a little over three hours to read it. The stories are so compelling, well written, and interesting, I did not want to put the book down. Interspersed among the stories are thought-provoking jewels for all of us desiring God's best for His Kingdom. They are biblical perspectives that are being lived out every day in Franklin, Tennessee.
And as I write these words I know that Scott and his bride of almost 30 years, Linda, do not limit their interests to middle Tennessee, but are ministering in villages in the Andes mountains of Peru in pursuit of enlarging God's Neighborhood.
This book demands a sequel with Paige Pitts' and Denny Denson's voices added to Scott's.
Thought provoking and challenging.......2004-06-07
Very well written and thought-provoking reading. What is our responsibility to those around us? Challenges us to reach out to those who are "different" from us, whether racially, economically, or any other way.

A Story of Survival.......2000-04-30
Run East is truly a rare find. Extremely well written, it is a story of unique inner strength and survival against the greatest of odds. Although Mr. Pomerantz managed to avoid the devastation of the concentration camps, he repeatedly faced challenges of survival that test the outer limits of a person's ability to survive. The situations that Mr.Pomerantz finds himself in are the equal of the best suspense novel. There are lessons of life here for people of all ages, including children. Mr. Pomerantz is required to make decisions about life and survival, his and others, that we all can learn from. Run East is a book of historical significance that you will be glad you read and will long remember.
