Book Description

In this quietly revolutionary work of social observation and medical philosophy, Booker Prize-winning writer John Berger and the photographer Jean Mohr train their gaze on an English country doctor and find a universal man--one who has taken it upon himself to recognize his patient's humanity when illness and the fear of death have made them unrecognizable to themselves. In the impoverished rural community in which he works, John Sassall tend the maimed, the dying, and the lonely. He is not only the dispenser of cures but the repository of memories. And as Berger and Mohr follow Sassall about his rounds, they produce a book whose careful detail broadens into a meditation on the value we assign a human life. First published thirty years ago, A Fortunate Man remains moving and deeply relevant--no other book has offered such a close and passionate investigation of the roles doctors play in their society.

"In contemporary letters John Berger seems to me peerless; not since Lawrence has there been a writer who offers such attentiveness to the sensual world with responsiveness to the imperatives of conscience."--Susan Sontag

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time........2007-09-18

I am required to read this book for Clinical Skills class, but I just quit reading it when I got to part in the middle when the author talks about how ignorant the villagers are: "There are large sections of the English working and middle class who are INARTICULATE as a result of wholesale cultural deprivation. THEY ARE DEPRIVED OF THE MEANS OF TRANSLATING WHAT THEY KNOW INTO THOUGHTS THEY CAN THINK." WHAT?!?!?!?!?!? I am sure there are lessons to be learned from this book, but between the marginal-quality, occasionally cryptic writing and the scorn the author shows in passages like this, they're lost. Forget selling this book back to the bookstore... I'm taking it straight to the recycling bin. If there are good lessons in the end, I don't have the patience to read all the way through to get to them. And Lord help me if I ever become the kind of doctor this book describes.

5 out of 5 stars A Fortunate Man: The Story of a Country Doctor.......2007-08-06

Beautiful, thoughtful, thought-provoking writing in a fascinating setting, from a sophisticated, personally philosophical point of view. Collaborative writing w/photography.

1 out of 5 stars The world has changed.......2005-08-24

I fully admired the dedication of a country doctor at times when general practitioners were regared as doctors who fallen off the ladder of sucess. However, today's doctor patient relationship are so different from what was in the good old days. You will be sued after you saved someone; you have to prescribe according to HMO's 'evidence based guidelines' and be prepared to be the scapegoat whenever something goes wrong. Things has changed. I miss the days when being a doctor can be such a pleasant and satisfying experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Rewarding Book.......2005-04-04

John Berger is know around the world as a Renaissance Man, one who can write criticism, plays, novels, short stories, and can even paint the occasional work of art. But I humbly submit that this may be his best work, one that examines the relationship between a country doctor and his community. Sadly the time period of the piece, the 1960s, are gone and the entire institution of the general practitioner, complete with house calls and lollipops for the children. But the questions he asks are searching ones that hinge on the very fundamental human relations that modernity is radically changing.

What is a human life worth? He won't give you any answers, because he trusts you to think about all this for years to come. An exceptional work.

5 out of 5 stars The way health care should be.......2003-01-14

I read this book for the first time as an undergraduate in 1987, now as a graduate student in health care, I'm realizing the wealth of information about how an effective system of care looks like. It's not the HMO approach, it's the approach that keeps one close to the ground in their community.

If you care about people and health care systems, read this book!

5 out of 5 stars Very readable book!.......2002-03-26

This book does a great job of explaining the definintions of "lemons" and how to go about documenting what you need if you have a lemon. It also answers many common questions that people have in eary to understand terms.

The book contains several appendixes which are very helpful including all state and federal laws related to lemons, a sample letter to send the car manufacturer if you believe you have a lemon.

The book also gives tips on selecting an attorney to represent you (they should do it at no fee since they will be reimbursed by the car manufacturer if you win), pulling together documentation, etc. The author also makes it clear that it is the manufacturer and not the dealer who is responsible for handling lemons under the law.

                  I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it before you buy a car.......2000-10-07

I am grateful a friend of mine recommended this book to me before I bought my new XTerra. Whew, it's thorough and gives you good ammunition before you go into battle with a car dealer.

                  BUY IT!

                  You can thank me later.

5 out of 5 stars The Lemon Law Bible.......2000-09-28

If you are planning to buy a car, you should buy this book first. Written in plain, understandable English, and packed full of information not only about what to do if your car turns out to be a lemon, but also how to avoid buying a lemon in the first place, Steve Lehto's book is a much-needed, non-technical guide to automobile law. Lehto provides the relevant information in the clearest possible manner, on legal terms, on the process of repair and replacement of a lemon, on the "tricks" many unscrupulous dealers use to avoid responsibility, on "Lemon Laws Around the Nation" - on every aspect of automobile law you need to know to become an empowered consumer, and take control of the situation. The extensive appendices, such as a "Sample Last Chance Letter," and "Internet Resources," are especially useful. Highly recommended!

Over 1,900 companies with over 8,000 marks, logos, and symbols divided equally among the old folk potters, studio potters, dinnerware manufacturers, distributors, and decoratorsfill this massive hardbound encyclopedia. No values. REVIEW: This thick hardcover book is packed with text and illustrations, the sheer measure of which admittedly took the author nearly a quarter century to research and compile. The book is an indispensable aid for properly identifying pottery, porcelain, and clay pieces. The various manufacturer listings contain paragraphs outlining the history of each company as well as interesting "insider" information. Both the novice and veteran collector can ID their merchandise quickly and easily.

                    5 out of 5 stars Book on U.S. Marks.......2007-06-14

This book is about U.S. marks.

.... So, if you need a piece of U.S.A pottery identified, then this book probably has the mark. (Please note that this book is not about finding markings of European pieces. As stated on the cover, this book is strictly about U.S. marks).

5 out of 5 stars Vast collection of pottery marks.......2006-11-27

This book is prodigious in scope: the pottery marks (with huge varieties within each company) and historical information are both invaluable and interesting. However, the indexing is weak, which leads one to thumbing through pages trying to find an elusive mark. This is such a well-researched, vast collection of marks, however, that laborious searches are rewarded.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Very informative book........2006-01-30

This book is jam packed with pottery marks, a great value for the price. I had no idea that there were so many. It is extremely informative, giving a brief history, manufacture dates and much more information for each company listed. I would definately recommend this to anyone with an interest in collecting or selling pottery.

3 out of 5 stars ExtensiveýBUT Not Easy to Use!.......2002-03-06

This book has a LOT of information! When you do find what you are trying to research there is extensive information about the company. HOWEVER, the book is not indexed well. The index is down right skimpy. When trying to look-up certain words or wording found in a mark there is no reference to these things in the index. So a tedious process of looking through each page many times insues.

I also would like more dates associated with the marks. I realize this would mean more research on the author's part but that would make the book more valuable to me if I could verify dates more readily. The current way the marks are identified is in paragraph form associating the illustrated mark with a number. Locating these numbers within the paragraphs is difficult and time consuming. It make the research tedious. Thus, this is NOT my first choice reference to go to when trying to identify a new mark.

I would like to see this book updated and improved by doing three things (PUBLISHERS are you listening?)-1) A more comprehensive index, 2) more research on the individual marks (dates associated with each), and typographicly improve the association between marks and comment text about the marks.

5 out of 5 stars And So It Was Done.......2000-09-10

Years ago I hunted high and low for a book on American ceramic wares, a genre who's time I saw closing fast. It was suggested once that I write one. I am glad I didn't take the challenge as my work would surly have paled severely in contrast to this marvelous, all inclusive work. Lois Lehner gives the subject the depth, scope and respect it deserves. This is 'the book' on American marks on pottery and porcelain its authority is never questioned.

These are the clothes I wish I had for MY Barbie when I was a kid. I now have grandchildren to make them for and couldnt ask for a better book to go by. Fabulous patterns! Get it....this book will not disappoint.

A great book (I also have the Knit for Barbie) but a little difficult to follow...but I will continue working on some of the items.

2 out of 5 stars Too hard to find the yarn required.......2006-08-16

I love the pictures. My little girls look at it all the time. But it is very hard to find the suggested yarn. The clothes are very cute but I wouldn't buy it again. I am not good at finding substitute yarns nor do I have the patience for it. Her knitting Barbie book is the same.

4 out of 5 stars Crochet versus knit........2006-08-06

I prefer this over the Knit edition. As stated for that rvw, Barbie bodies thru the years require slight fit-adjustments. Yarns stretch, threads not so much. The pattern errors, patterns spreading over multiple pages, paragraphed instead of row-by-row format all disrupt easy work-up. As Nicky is Barbie's authorized knit-cro artisan, both mfr + publr would earn better profits from handiwork tote-size editions, pre-testing pattern how-to's, offering a few visual and yarn/thread choices ... and how about some Design Names or Design Numbers for Nicky's future creations (as is done for classic Barbie styles, and the numerous other high-dollar "fashion doll" creations world-wide). Since no rvwrs mention perestroika.ca etc, knowing one's own stitch guage prevents a multitude of pattern errors and affords ample design variety (mine is .5"/k and .25"/sc for sport yarn and cotton no. 5 respectively).

                      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous clothes.......2006-03-10

I bought this book to make some Barbie clothes for my granddaughter. The thread is a little high-end, but the clothes are fabulous. The instructions are easy to follow, and I could easily substitute yarns.

5 out of 5 stars Great advice from a PhD who's done his homework.......2007-05-02

Though it reads a bit like a college text, Gift of Fatherhood contains solid, well-organized, how-to details on becoming a better father. Hass's timeless exhortations are fine-tuned for Dad's looking to hone their skills, but Moms will certainly gain insight, too. This densely-packed book covers just about everything, including obstacles, learning to love your kids more, enjoy parenting, finding time, why your wife matters, etc. Hass dovetails nicely with Faber/Mazlish (How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk) and Cline/Fay (Parenting With Love and Logic). The book's final two chapters deal with divorce and stepdads. One small nit: this Simon & Shuster book would be easier to read with whiter paper or a larger font.

                            5 out of 5 stars Michael made a difference..........2006-01-11

I remember being a teenager in the US and heard this amazing sound coming from my radio! I had to know who it was! I called the radio station and the DJ said it was new band from OZ called INXS. I was hooked from day one. Soon after that, "Don't Change" came out and I HAD to have it!! I went to the mall and used all of my money to buy "Shabooh Shoobah"!! Had to have it! I learned all the songs and made my own dance moves. It was such an innocent time of life. As I grew older, so did Michael and the band. But the CORE INXS sound was there. I saw INXS a few times live, and Michael stole the show. He made it seem as if he were singing directly to you. The ambiguous sensuality, teasing, come-hither look were a natural for Michael. I've never seen a showman before, and I doubt if I will ever see one of his caliber again.

I read the book page to page....interestingly enough to see all of the holes in Kell's side of the story. I even made communication soon after the spreading of ashes at sea with Dennis (aka DIPA). What an odd consequence to an even stranger death. By someone who was loved by the world.

This book brought a new light on things. I suffered from severe depression. Michael had his struggles. But both of us sought new light from somewhere. Tina and Patricia have summed up the other part of the story that I'd never heard. Very heartwarming and inviting, it was. It wasn't all about depression and death and mourning. Yes, at times it was of these things but I found it mostly about Michael being happy and content, always up for a good laugh!
It brought new smiles to my face.

I do have to commend Tina and Patricia on their delicate way of dealing with Paula Yates. They are better women than I can ever hope to be.

Although you do really feel the loss of Michael....the one good thing is...his spirit is with us! Through his music, dancing, laughter, smiles and the occasional naughty side!

I would like for Tina and Patricia to know that Michael changed my life in so many ways. A song would pop into my head...and there was the answer! Growing older, Michael's music has always played a part in my life. And he will continue. There will never be another Michael...God broke the mold when he made him.

But that's alright. Thank you, Michael for touching so deeply someone you never knew. You impacted my life immensely.

Thank You, God.....for giving us Michael. And thank you Michael, for just being yourself. The world loves you.

2 out of 5 stars Just one side of the story.......2004-12-05

I really feel for Michael Hutchence's mother, and his sister too. They lost a beloved son and brother, and that is a terrible thing. I can understand why they disliked Paula Yates so much and blamed her for his death. HOWEVER this book - their story - is just one side of the story. If you read it, keep that in mind - it is his mother and sister's perspective, and far from the whole picture. The best book I have read on the Michael and Paula saga is Gerry Agar's book "Paula, Michael and Bob - Everything You Know is Wrong", which reveals as much of the inside story as we are going to get, and in a very heartfelt, honest way. What really came through in that particular book, which is NOT apparent from "Just a Man" is that Paula Yates was a wonderful, beautiful, colourful lady and a wonderful and loving mother. Unfortunately she gave her power away - first in her marriage to Bob Geldof and then in her relationship with Michael Hutchence. The downfall of Michael and Paula was drugs, and the paranoia, unstable behavior and mental illness associated with their abuse. Michael unfortunately lead Paula (who went willingly) down the ugly road of drug abuse, and it destroyed both of them. What a waste of two wonderful people. Unfortunately Patricia Glassop and Tina Hutchence did not know Paula before drugs started to change her personality, and that should be remembered when reading their book. And as much as I feel for them and their terrible loss, they need to accept that Michael was fully responsible for his drug abuse, his relationship with Paula and her children and ultimately, his fate.

                            1 out of 5 stars A dreadful indictment on 2 women.......2004-01-13

If I die before my parents, I know that it is they that will know the least about me; for whatever reasons it is parents and siblings that so often know so little about their sons and daughters brothers and sisters. I knew Michael Hutchence - just a little, not much. But I knew so many people close to him, in that mileu and during that time. Nothing in this book seems anything other than self serving, blinkered and hypocritical. I am appalled by this book and I feel that these women do not serve the memory of the man they profess to have loved. Their loathing of Paula Yates is all too obvious, but who really knows what goes on between 2 people except the 2 in the relationship. In other words, what would they know and why do they hate Paula so much?

I think it would have kept Tina and Patricia in good stead if they remember that revenge is a dish best eaten cold.

Other books on Hutchence talk of his closeness to his dad not his mum, and claim that Tina Hutchence would have known absolutely zilch about her brother. It serves no purpose to spend an entire book defaming Paula Yates and promoting their own agenda. The shame is theirs. Do not read this book.

2 out of 5 stars Why oh Why?.......2002-10-07

Patricia and Tina talk about feeling the need to write the book so they could set the record straight about Michael for his beloved daughter Tiger.

Fair enough..but why blacken the name of her mother Paula Yates who died two years ago? Why go on various chat show bitching about Paula when she was dead just a few weeks. (In 2000)

Obviously they had issues with her but to dismiss her as a groupie figure is simplistic and untrue.

She was a witty, warm vibrant woman who had a difficult background and fought to develop a sense of self worth. Michael was captivated by her and they fell in love end of story.

To blame her for his demise is understandable as mother and daughter are obviously overcome by grief. By I can't understand what motivated them to write this personal account other than money. Set the record straight yes but be a bit more diplomatic when there are children involved.

I feel sorry for them because I can't imagine that this is what Michael would have wanted. His father Kell and brother Rhett set up a website in his honour. ... It is a great tribute and in keeping with his spirit.

I bought this book and it was an interesting read. A very biased account naturally but perception is everything. I think ultimately they will regret writing this...a personal account is all fine and well but they could have cut out some of the poison and venom. Paula is gone now and she has four lovely girls still in this world. Don't hurt them by continuing your accusations.

May they both rest in peace. A sad and sorry tale for all involved including Patricia and Tina. I don't want to sound judgmental about them because I understand they are upset at the death of a loved one. However, I think they could have shown a little more sensitivity.

                            5 out of 5 stars A Tragic Life.......2002-03-09

I have always been a fan of INXS, although I never
knew much about Michael as a person. I became interested
in his life after he took his life. I have to say this
was a hard book to come across, when I did find it..
it was a book hard to put down, even though I knew
the ending. His sister and mother put out a very good
book and they should be proud of brother and son.
I found Michael trying to please everyone but himself.
Trying to keep up in the rock and roll life. Yes, he
had tons of talent but I felt he would of been better
off not leading this life but to settle down with his
true love Michele, having children and being a "normal
person". He was such a tender person, loved his family
and most of all he loved his Tiger. Much too sad he
could not see her to grow up. I also feel if Paula Yates
had not entered his life, he would be alive. He was very
well grounded until he met her...Rest in peace Michael
your music will always live on. And may Tiger grow up

well adjusted and to know she had a father who loved
her. And for Paula, your demons are now at rest, but
how sad to take your life with your daughter around
But I am sure that Sir Bob will take care of Tiger
very well. Closing thoughts, Michael had a great family
who adored him and did what they could. Thank you for
                            this great read.

                                  Book Description

Jewish First Wife, Divorced collects the correspondence of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal Relief Administrator, Harry Hopkins, and his Jewish first wife, Ethel Gross. These letters - flirtatious and fond, quietly argumentative and terse - reveal the significant influence of Progressivism on Harry Hopkins's political ideology and also the unique challenges for a professionally ambitious Jewish immigrant woman living in the early twentieth century.
