Fabulous history book written from a female perspective.......2005-08-24
I absolutely love this book and I am just reading it through for the second time. The grammar and format take a bit to get used to but the descriptions of her time homesteading are just fascinating. I am encouraged by her stories of living in a sod house and raising children there. She perseveres and then finds her "voice" in the politics of the time. Wonderful read!

I love this book!! I had originally bought this book for the wonderful
christmas decor ideas...great centerpieces, table scapes, wreaths..ect.
I happen to decorate my house in a very "natural", woodsy theme and this book has loads of those...all just beautiful. To top it off, it has wonderful recipes too! Many times you will get a book like this and it will have a few things you love but the majority is so so. Not this one, I can say that I love everything in this book! Great purchase.

This was my first purchase of a Christmas With Southern Living book and I was quite happy with my purchase and am anticipating the 2006!! I took this to my parents one weekend when my sisters were there and they all wanted a copy. I used quite a few of the recipes from the book for my Thanksgiving Dinner and they went over well especially the Butter Coconut Pie--YUMMY. As I am not a seasoned CWSL book buyer I don't have others to compare it to (except for one from the 1990's my sister gave me which I felt was not half as nice as this one)but would give this ***** five stars.
25th Anniversary Edition Falls Far Short of Expectations.......2006-02-03
I am a decades-long lover of Southern Living publications. Whether we buy the magazines, the cookbooks, or the home products, many of us count on Southern Living for unsurpassed quality and creativity.
I am extremely disappointed with "Christmas with Southern Living 2005". This edition marks the 25th Anniversary of this regularly phenomenal book. I can hardly believe this belongs in the same category as the volumes from previous years.
Certainly, the color photography remains true to form, wonderfully presented. But it's the sheer lack of creative craft ideas, and the fewer number of quality recipe ideas that mar this normally fantastic book. I was expecting a five-star product for the silver anniversary - what I fear I've received is far below what SL should have offered.
I expect CwSL 2006 to make up for what 2005's edition was lacking - this company will most certainly not let us down again. I'll continue to buy Southern Living books without hesitation - and with excitement! I'm simply disappointed that the 2005 book will find its way to the back of the bookcase.
A must have for the Christmas perfectionist!.......2005-10-25
I'm an admitted Christmas fanatic. I love decorating the house, baking everyday in the month of December & decking out the tree. This book has so many great ideas & recipes, especially the planned menus for breakfast, lunch & dinner! You can never go wrong buying a Southern Living book.

This beautiful book is chock full of large and outstanding photographs of gardens. I have read many garden books on design and this one explained it the best. Very pleased with this book that covers more garden topics than the title suggests.

Yet during his years before the public (1882-1929), Pachmann was regarded as one of the four or five greatest pianists in the world, as well as the greatest exponent of Chopin. This book is loaded with inaccuracies a competent scholar would never have included. The index contains some howlers that should never have gotten past the editor. For instance, violinist Joseph Joachim and cellist Alfredo Piatti are merged into a nonexistent person, Joachim Piatti (producing a person who perhaps could play both solo parts of Brahms' double concerto for violin and cello?).
The book is heavily padded. A technique to stretch thin material is occasionally employed when Pachmann spends some time in a city, prompting Mitchell to present his take on that place at that time. An example: "In New York, the major musical event of 1891 was the opening of Carnegie Hall." Fine, although Pachmann had nothing to do with it. Tschaikovsky did, however, so Tschaikovsky's description of bathrooms in New York hotels is included.
Fortunately, Indiana University Press has withdrawn the book and destroyed the remaining copies. Reviewers in the New York Review of Books and Clavier completely missed the shortcomings of this book. Who is minding the store?

In September, 1939, George Lucius Salton's boyhood in Tyczyn, Poland, was shattered by escalating violence and terror under German occupation. His father, a lawyer, was forbidden to work, but eleven-year-old George dug potatoes, split wood, and resourcefully helped his family. They suffered hunger and deprivation, a forced march to the Rzeszow ghetto, then eternal separation when fourteen-year-old George and his brother were left behind to labor in work camps while their parents were deported in boxcars to die in Belzec. For the next three years, George slaved and barely survived in ten concentration camps, including Rzeszow, Plaszow, Flossenburg, Colmar, Sachsenhausen, Braunschweig, Ravensbrück, and Wobbelin. Cattle cars filled with skeletal men emptied into a train yard in Colmar, France. George and the other prisoners marched under the whips and fists of SS guards. But here, unlike the taunts and rocks from villagers in Poland and Germany, there was applause. "I could clearly hear the people calling: "Shame! Shame!" . . . Suddenly, I realized that the people of Colmar were applauding us! They were condemning the inhumanity of the Germans!" Of the 500 prisoners of the Nazis who marched through the streets of Colmar in the spring of 1944, just fifty were alive one year later when the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne Division liberated the Wobbelin concentration camp on the afternoon of May 2, 1945. "I felt something stir deep within my soul. It was my true self, the one who had stayed deep within and had not forgotten how to love and how to cry, the one who had chosen life and was still standing when the last roll call ended."

The 23rd Psalm is a story that has been imprinted upon my soul, that will remain there as long as I live. I share in the sentiments of Pat's review; I was both compelled to stay in its pages by day and visited with its images at night in my sleep, somehow sharing in this man's plight.
Thank you Mr. Salton for allowing others, for allowing me, into the most private and intimate and horrific memories of your life. I esteem you, and those like you, with the utmost honor. May the Lord cause His face to shine upon you my friend.
Survivor Skills Then, Courage Now.......2006-12-28
It must have taken the author a great deal of inner strength and pain to come to terms with these horrible happenings and be able to put them down on paper to share with all those that read this book. It was amazing that one so young would be quick enough to call on survival skills at the right moment. Though some, of course, was luck, this author displayed a natural instinct to survive throughout his nightmare.

Heartbreaker and history maker.......2002-10-16
An incredible, heartbreaking and courageous story of the struggle to survive the Nazi reign of terror. I couldn't put the book down as I read of the authors early years, suffering in 10 concentration camps and ultimate liberation by American soldiers! A must read for history buffs and anyone interested in the power of the human spirit to survive tragedy. The characters in the book will continue to live on in my memories.
