Romance in the Rockies .......2005-07-27

"It is hard to recall another woman in any age or country who traveled as widely, saw so much, and who left so perceptive a record of what she saw," says Daniel Boorstin who wrote an introduction to an edition of "A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains."

The daughter of a respectable English clergyman, Isabella Bird was a short, dumpy, 41-year old spinster in 1873 when she visited Colorado. She found there a bunch of people she mostly disliked, but a place -- Estes Park -- on which she lavished pages of Wordsworthian nature worship. She climbed Long's Peak -- no small feat of physical endurance -- described Denver, Colorado Springs, and other Colorado cities, and lived briefly the life of a pioneer ranchwoman in a mountain wilderness.

The reader should be aware of a romantic subtext not fully described in "A Lady's Life." Isabella met "Rocky Mountain Jim" Nugent, a famous desperado who she described as an
"awful looking a ruffian as one could see." Jim became her guide and companion in Estes Park, but she only hints in her book at a romantic attachment. In letters to her sister in Scotland, she tells much more of the relationship and of Jim's ardour and his marriage proposal. Was she fantasizing? Was Jim, known as a ladies man, putting out a lot of Irish blarney to this less-than-glamorous gentlewoman? Or was his infatuation with her real? The relationship between the two is explored in several biographies of Bird. In any case, Isabella left Jim behind and headed back to Scotland after a couple of months. Jim was killed in a gunfight a few months later by another man Isabella had known. A romantic triangle? Who knows?

With a story like this -- and a backstory of frustated love and gunfights -- "A Ladies Life in the Rocky Mountains" can hardly fail to be fascinating. This edition has an introduction, illustrations, and a map of Isabella's travels plus footnotes that complement her text. Isabella Bird was quite a woman.

Smallchief

Formidable, frumpy and brave.......2001-03-20

After 125-plus years, Isabella Bird comes across as a formidable, judgmental, frumpy and brave (if not foolhardy) woman who saw parts of Colorado at a time and in a condition that a lot of us wish we could have seen it. Her standard for measuring anything human (character, behavior, diet, education, etc.) can pretty much be summed up in the formula "English and Christian, good; everything else, bad."

She was keenly observant, although her writing style seems overwrought, romantic and sentimental (I'm trying not to say "cheesy") by our standards.

Most remarkable, though, is her bravery and her (apparent) charisma. By her account, she was welcomed wherever she went, and even the grotesquely grizzled recluse Jim Nugent fell for her -- she hints that he proposed marriage. And she went places alone, in winter, that you are more likely to read about these days in cautionary tales from the Colorado State Patrol or a search and rescue unit, where the protaganist ends up in a coffin.

Was she telling the truth? Maybe. Probably. Better-educated people than I seem to take her at her word. And the detail in her stories has the ring of authenticity. So, OK, let's take her at her word.

As a witness to a pre-sprawl, pre-Vail, pre-John Denver period of the Colorado Rockies, she is fairly readable and considerably entertaining. And her precise and photographic descriptions of the people and landscape are invaluable. You just have to keep in mind that she's looking (which is to say, judging everything) through the lens of a smug 19th century Englishwoman.

A Lady's Life in the Rocky Mountains.......2000-06-11

The book was an interesting account of Bird's travels through the Rocky Mountains, but as I read it, I kept wondering why, why, why? Why would a 41-year old woman travel through the Rockies on horseback in winter? Living in the area where she traveled, I appreciate the descriptions of the mountains and the awesomeness of nature which she elegantly describes. The book is an interesting travel log of her journey and adventures in 1873.

A great book for anyone interested in U.S. mass communication law, covering topics such as First Amendment guarantees, libel and slander in mass communication, privacy, obscenity, freedom of the press, commercial speech and FCC regulation of mass media, explained through U.S. Supreme Court decisions (v.g., New York Times Co. v. Sullivan, Miller v. California, New York Times Co. v. United States). Specially interesting is the discussion about content restraint of motion pictures (chapter IV) and TV (chapter XI), the latter an issue back on newspapers after a recent Supreme Court decision (United States v. Playboy Entertainment Group, Inc.).

Discovering Cottage Architecture - great resource.......1999-12-07

I have always had an interest in vernacular cottage architecture and the processes that shape it. While I am not a professional architect or construction contractor, I find that most books dealing with cottage architecture focus either on interior decorating in the "country style" or whimsical meanderings of "simpler times." There isn't much written (yet) about HOW these buildings came into being, who built them, and how they did it. This little book certainly makes an attempt to fill the void, and does a marvelous job (although it could have gone a bit further). The book looks at cottage building (in England) from it's earliest forms right through to the early modern period. It covers social aspects that influenced cottage construction, and gives detailed drawings and diagrams showing how cottages were planned and executed. Very clear, very succinct, VERY INTERESTING. It lost a star (only rating 4 stars) only because it's painfully SMALL -- literally a POCKET book on a subject that really needs to be covered with the kind of detail the book attempts (in it's limited space). Still, a refreshing read, and very educational/informative, especially to anyone interested in the more "nuts 'n bolts" aspects of when/where/why/HOW of cottage construction. A+

The Inner Eve is defined as the feminine expression of God's spirit residing in each of us. Throughout life's journey, we may have lost touch with our Inner Eve because of societal issues, shifts in self-esteem, and faltering faith. In order for us to sense the presence of the Holy Spirit around us and re-connect with our Inner Eve, we must allow our rational mind and our intuition to unite as one. Great scrapbook.......2004-03-28

This is a really good book. It has 2 giant posters or S Club, behind the scenes of Miami 7 pictures, a guide to each member containing facts and a full biography page. In each 'Beginners Guide' there is a picture or a S Clubber. It also includes the story guide of the Miami series, along with many other posters it has quotes from the series, the S Club 7 lingo, it also has a whole other page of 25 facts, and a page of 'Classic Moments'. This book is loaded with information and pictures! Go and buy it.

Although this book doesn't really have that much info on the band, it has billions of pictures. There are several fold-out posters, losts of collages, and an episode guide, too.

A Perfect Way To Join The Club!.......2005-06-13

This book is about the band S Club 7, who split in 2003. However, this book was written in 2000.

The first seven chapters of the book, are about the S Club 7. Each chapter is about a different member. The members of S Club 7 are Jo, Jon, Bradley, Tina, Rachel, Hannel, and Paul. Each chapter gives info and fun facts about the members, and really takes a look at their personal life.

The last six chapters of the book is about the band S Club 7 put together. It starts off with how the band was formed, and all of them meeting each other. It then takes you through the progress of making two singles, an album, and performing around the globe.

The book is very interesting, and is needed by any S Club 7 fan! The book does only give information from the year 1999-2000 though. Still get the book, because the information you get, is very exculsive and interesting!

This is a great book, it tells you who is always late, whos's a shopaholic, who has 5 tattoos, a pierced bellybutton, who's most health-concious, who's the biggest party animal, whos the messiest, who has too many shoes, S Club 7 websites, S Club 7 Speak, and about what the members did before S Club. It also includes 8 black and white photos. This is a great book and you get to know a lot about the band. It also tells you what they do on their downtime, and who they fancy.

SUMMARY:
IN THE 1940'S, DURING WW11, JEWS WERE SENT TO CONCENTARTION CAMPS. THIS BOOK INTERVEIWS PEOPLE WHO HAVE SURVIVED THESE CAMPS. THE STORIES THEY TELL ARE SOMETIMES DISTURBING AND VERY SAD. YOU WILL ENJOY THIS BOOK IF YOU LIKE TO READ FIRST HAND INFORMATION.

The Camps.......2001-06-18

In The Camps relates the stories of Jewish teenagers who were sent to Nazi concentration camps where they were separated from their families and survived years of exhausting labor, scarce food, and cruel guards. The sources of strength that these teens found are shared in their feelings about God and hope.

good introduction of holocaust to young students.......1999-06-05

While this book is rather short in text, it provides riviting photos and is an excellent first step in introducing the holocaust to teenage students. It points out the horrors of the time by retelling the stories of those who were teenagers during the holocaust. This is an excellent way to relate to todays teenagers, and let them absorb the realities of one of the darkest periods in our planets history.

I would recommend giving this book to every 15 year old for this weekend's homework reading assignment.
