Dry but essential.......2004-02-29

This is the definitive English-language version of Hitler's early years. It's not as well-written or as interesting as Franz Jetzinger's German-language book on AH's early manhood, but this is good. The book was published in 1966 and is, unfortunately, dated. There has been significant additional material unearthed since the 60's. Another problem is that there are no photos in the book. It would have helped the overall impression had they included photos of Braunau, Leonding and especially, Linz, the Fuehrer's favorite city and regarded as his "hometown."

Smith doesn't write especially well, but his research is dilligent and reliable. Don't expect any fireworks in the style department, but you can be assured of a solid, quality reading experience.

Well known to his contemporaries but largely forgotten today, John Simpson Smith (1810-1871) counted among his acquaintances Indian chiefs and United States presidents. During his long and varied career, Smith was a fur trapper, a trader for Charles Bent, and a recognized spokesman for the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians, with whom he lived much of his life.

Smith served as interpreter for major treaty negotiations and accompanied three delegations of chiefs to Washington, D.C., to visit Presidents Fillmore, Lincoln, and Grant. Eyewitness to several major conflicts, Smith was in Black Kettle's camp when it was attacked by troops under Col. John M. Chivington at Sand Creek, Colorado. Smith's mixed-blood son was murdered by U.S. troops, but Smith survived and his affidavit later was used as evidence in congressional and U.S. army hearings.

Author Stan Hoig brings Smith and his world to life in The Western Odyssey of John Simpson Smith, the first comprehensive biography of the colorful frontiersman. A new preface highlights Smith's accomplishments and the increasingly elusive West he knew.

This book discusses the radical change in new U.S. Treasury Department regulations and other guidance on withholding taxes on payments to foreign individuals and foreign corporations of interest, dividends, rent, salaries, wages, premiums, annuities, compensations, remunerations, emoluments, or other fixed or determinable annual or periodical gains, profits, and similar income (FDAP income).
Bruce's many years of experience in advising clients on international tax planning, especially the use of foreign trusts and complex structures, makes the book a valuable resource to those working in the area. His ability to conceptualize visually most of the salient issues enables him to explain difficult issues in sensible and practical ways.
The relevance of the book on withholding issues is indicated by the fact that in 1998, the most recent data available, annual payments to foreign persons surpassed US$124 billion. They were reported on more than 2.4 million information returns. The amount of tax reported totaled approximately US$2.4 billion.
The book contains a simplified description of the tax and reporting requirements. It emphasizes "real world" situations that would help U.S. and foreign institutions that must deal with the withholding requirements decide how to handle many issues and how to reorganize their business practices. Of course, the new withholding requirements have created diverse problems for customers and clients of many banks and trust companies.
As the book observes, there will be a continuous stream of withholding developments from diverse directions. Therefore, in spite of the constant stream of promises from legislators of tax policy to simplify matters, the withholding tax requirements show how increasingly complex tax law is becoming. In fact, the growing complexity of withholding, the fact that requirements are written in technical tax terms, and the lack of translations for foreign professionals further complicate the ability and cost of compliance.
The lack of plain guidance opens the door to practitioners, such as Mr. Bruce, to develop practical guides. For the next few years at least, until developments make it outdated, this book will prove useful for legal and accounting advisers, private bankers, trust officers, investment advisers, and professors and students. In addition, compliance officers responsible for training the staffs of financial institutions, as they prepare for the first audits, also will benefit from the book.

A great way to learn!.......1999-12-25

I was a student in an MBA financial accounting course that used Dan Gode's Financial Accounting Tutor software instead of a textbook. This turned out to be of great benefit. The Tutor presented and explained financial accounting in a straightforward and insightful manner. The interactivity of the software added another dimension to learning, making me more involved in the learning process and making it more enjoyable to solve problems. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wants to learn financial accounting on their own and I would highly recommend the Tutor for any introductory/intermediate accounting course in college or business school. Another thing to consider is that the cost of the software package is much less compared to an average accounting book running you upwards of $70 and an average MBA course running you upwards of $2,500.

Overall a good book with lots of information on the subject. A few of the pictures in the book were labelled with the wrong descriptions. Otherwise, worth the money.

The history is lively and well done.......2002-12-06

Firearms played an important role in the West, guarding against animals and outlaws alike. Guns Of The Old West is an informative survey which will interest a wide range of readers; from those interested in early firearms, to others who want an accurate narrative of those who used them. Descriptions accompany black and white drawings of rifles, revolvers and other weapons. The history is lively and well done and will interest a large audience.

From its striking cover, through to the stunning photography, and the colourful and informative step by step illustrations, this book is exciting and inspirational. The projects are contemporary and stylish but well explained and illustrated. The colours, as the title suggests, are bright and vibrant . The book is well laid out in easy to follow projects, with additional technical help in the form of line drawings at the end of each chapter. This is one of the most exciting craft books I have come across for a long time.

Simple is definitely the word to describe this book. The photography is gorgeous and the pictures take up most of the space. The projects are contrived and poorly explained for beginners. A mix of retro hippie/today's young hip designs. There isn't one project that interests me nor is there any inspiration to be taken from these designs. I expect better books from Interweave Press. This one is a disappointment.

This short (under 100 pages) beautifully-illustrated book (with full-spread photographs and drawings) focuses on meditation, yoga, and other relaxation techniques and natural remedies to useful during pregnancy. The six chapters address emotions, nutrition (including vitamins & herbal supplements), yoga & exercise, massage, natural remedies, and holistic healing. I was disappointed in this book only I was expecting some coverage of natural delivery, and how to miminize the need for medical intervention, and that topic was barely touched. The book is decidedly focused on pregnancy, not delivery. I think this book would be helpful for a mother interested in incorporating yoga and homeopathy into her routine; it would also be helpful for a partner of a pregnant person who is willing to act as masseuse, as the book provides extensive detail on how to massage an expectant mother. I wouldn't recommend this if you're don't already have a proclivity toward natural remedies and healing (I think it would be a bit "too natural", too touch-feely for mainstream readers), nor would I recommend it if you're interested primarily in natural childbirth -- even though the numerous relaxation techniques contained in the book would probably help in facilitating natural childbirth. The photography of beautifully serene & relaxed pregnant women is lovely, perhaps alone worth the price of the book. The images and the text do help convey that pregnancy is a beautiful, natural state; they provide a welcome contrast to many of the more mainstream pregnancy books that are popular these days, which detail the risks of pregnancy to the extent that you'll be afraid to become pregnant in the first place.

I am a 32 year young librian, who plans to have children in my mid -late thirites.This book will help me prepare for my child at that time. New Natural Pregnancy seems so peaceful and makes being pregnant look so simple. At first I was afraid to have children but after reading this book, I feel more at ease.

Ernst Kantorowicz was a complex figure whose long incident-filled life seemed to embody many of the contradictions of the twentieth century. A Jew from a disputed area between Germany and Poland who fought on the German side in World War I, he first achieved academic success with Frederick II (1927), a work whose language, in Gabrielle Spiegel's words, "often came perilously close to that of the Nazi party" in its desire to see a reconstituted German nation once again dominant on the world stage. Forced to emigrate when the Nazis came to power, Kantorowicz later became embroiled in controversy when, at Berkeley during the McCarthy era, he refused to sign an oath of allegiance designed to identify Communist Party sympathizers. Resigning from Berkeley as a result of the controversy over the loyalty oath, Kantorowicz moved to the Institute of Advanced Study in Princeton, where he remained for the rest of his life and where he wrote his masterpiece, The King's Two Bodies.

Kantorowicz the historian, however, had no wish to see his own life become a subject of historical study. When he died in 1963, his will directed that all his personal papers be destroyed. Why had a historian so involved in history wished to erase himself from it? In Kantorowicz: Stories of a Historian, Alain Boureau confronts this question by writing a unique work which is as much a speculation on the nature of biography as it is a biographical study. For most, my best bet is to invest in well-chosen, no-load mutual funds. Hold for the long term, put in a fixed amount periodically and do not withdraw dividends. That’s my strategy.

Written interestingly, succicently, to-the-point no padding briefs of 500+ people you have heard of and admired. This IS a book that's hard to put down, hard to stop reading until you've checked every entry. Enjoy! (You WILL!)

Scott did a very good job bringing out the Americans whom we would normally not know anywhere else. The characters, history and places kept me on this one. A fun and interesting book I am glad to share.

Mr Baron presents facts on hundreds of famous Americans in a fast paced and enjoyable manner. He puts each veterans service within a historical context, and the pictures alone are worth the price of admission.

If there is a criticism, it is that the book goes too fast. Lets hope that there is a volume two. A really fun and educational look at the military life of celebrities.
