The Adventure of Two Lifetimes fuses the story of Peggy and Brian Goetz with the tale of Peggy's mother, June, who keeps in touch during the trip, reconstructing her 1956 journey from her journal and scrapbook. The Adventure of Two Lifetimes compares and contrasts America of the 1950s with America in the late 1990s; towns that were booming during June's trip are now shells of their former selves, stripped by big-box stores and interstates. Friendly strangers opened their doors to the weary cyclists in both eras, but June's idealistic naivete—which results in a horrific assault and near-rape—is matched by Peggy and Brian's careful cynicism.

This is not so much a travelogue—of daily mileages and linear directions—as it is a memoir of time, of places, of a mother and a daughter. It's a book about how one woman's courage and quest for a place in the world forever changed her life, and how her daughter emerged from the shadow of that feat to find her own place in the world, together with her husband. And finally, it's a book about America and Americans, in two very different generations.

I hated this book. I admit I didn't finish it, but what I read was dreadful. These people seem to be so impressed with themselves, you'd think no one but them had ever cycled across the country. I'm somewhat upset that I have to give the book one star, because there doesn't seem to be a 'no star' rating.

This is not the type of book I normally read. It arrived in the mail and I had a hard time putting it down. Life passes us by all too quickly. This shows us to stop and smell the roses. Brian is my cousin. They stopped at our house on the trip through Nebraska. They were tired but happy. I hadn't seen Brian for years since life took us to different parts of the country. We had a wonderful but all too short visit. Any time I hear about someone taking a long bike trip I have to tell them about this adventure. Now I have a book to recommend. It's great!

I enjoyed this story immensely. Peggy's descriptions made me want to get out and really SEE these places, minus the Winnebago of course. Sweat Boy, nice job and good info on the "gadget" aspect! Enough to give me some understanding without causing my eyes to glaze. Alternating the writing between the two authors, together with the infusion of June's writings, made the book an easy read. And June, what a character! She reminds me of Steinbeck's Mary Talbot from Cannery Row.

The true Joy of Bicycling.......2001-06-02

A true picture of how traveling by bike can focus on the scenery not the speed. 40 years of contrast in highways, stores, accommodations, but little change with people wanting to help. Not only should we take time to "smell the roses" but we should enjoy the poeple of this country. What will the next generation depict of our country's scenery/pollution, roads/superhighways, and people? Will fear of assault, roads blocked to bicycles, hotels unwilling to take in exhausted travelers, prevent future bicycle travel? Let's hope not. This kind of adventure should always be available.

Even for a beginner.......2004-08-29

I'm a programmer not a woodworker but even I was able to produce a beautiful piece. I did the bench but gave it away, now I need to build some pieces for myself.

I broke down an bought a table saw. I had always used tools that I borrowed from friends. Be careful, you don't know where this book will lead you.

I followed this book cover to cover and have built 2 chairs and 2 footrests - The table and bench are next :)

I enjoyed the history at the beginning of the book, then got stuck in to the process of building.

The work had already been done to come up with the cutting plans, so you don't waste a lot of wood on scrap.

The only mistake I made was that as I couldn't find 5/4 lumber, I used 1x instead - this alters the cutting lengths - be careful!!

Great book. Clear. Well illustrated. Starts from scratch and brings you all the way through the building process for a number of porjects. Couldn't have asked for more here, in terms of clarity and explicit narrative. Crisp drawings are backed up with instructive photos. I would HIGHLY recommend this book. Great history section too!

A fabulous book; clear illustrations; easy to follow text. I built the chair and table, and had great success. Great for the beginning woodworker.

Educational history, but not for the serious wood worker........1999-09-29

Maybe it's the engineer in me but I felt that the plans in this book were lacking. The furniture dimensions were difficult to find. The exploded diagram if dimensioned would have been of great help. The historical accounts were interesting reading but if your looking to build some Adirondack Chairs/Furniture this is not the book for you.

The Killer-ess.......2003-09-29

There is no question about it: "The Devil, Me and Jerry Lee" is entertaining and fast reading. The author is the younger sister of Jerry Lee Lewis. It is for those of us that already appreciate the Killer. Folks who don't know who "The Killer" is should stop reading this review now. The faithful will be treated to a tale of life on the road and a little on the wild side of Jerry Lee. There are few surprises for those familiar with Lewis' past. His up and down career is covered form the mid -1950s at Sun Records in Memphis until the "present day". It's a bit foggy, perhaps intentionally so, as to what the Killer is doing right now. To quote the trailer in the movie "Great Balls of Fire" `he is probably playing his heart out-somewhere'. DMJL also tells the tale of the author's own strange career both on and off stage. The details of the latter are frank, earthy and mostly believable. (As to the former, it's a mystery: What "career" did Linda Gail have?Billboard credits her with 2 chart hits.) They are delivered in a take me or leave me fashion, just the way her big brother would want. The author has a definite manipulative charm to her, a trait she no doubt shares with her sibling. I am certain her 8 husbands could attest to that! The bottom line is that DMJL is recommended for Lewis fans only. The story won't win any new ones. Any serious country fan should possess at least one Killer CD. Amazon has several available! Jerry Lee is an entertainer one has to listen to, not merely read about. As for his little sister, she wore me down: 5 stars.

In One More Border--escape from war-torn Europe, William Kaplan tells the story of his father, Igor's, escape from Europe during World War II. Igor Kaplan was a young boy when he and his family decided to leave their country for a safer place. With the help of the wonderful author, Shelley Tanaka, William Kaplan's story will intrigue readers. A few pages in the book even give detailed history of World War II. I would highly recommend this book for 9-12 year olds. Although the book isn't overly scary, children under eight may find the subject of World War II too intense, and people over 12 probably won't find the story exciting enough and may become easily bored.

If you enjoy this book, you'll probably love some of Shelley Tanaka's books!
