Oregon's Charles Sprague: Editor, Governor, Leader.......2004-01-03
In "An Editor for Oregon," Floyd McKay provides a thoroughly-researched, eminently readable account of Sprague's life and times. McKay, a journalism professor at Western Washington University, brings unquestioned qualifications to this work. Before entering the academic world, he spent many years as a working journalist, both in broadcast and print. His first job was on the Oregon Statesman, working under Sprague, its owner and publisher. But though his admiration for his subject is clear, it's also a straightforward and honest account.
McKay traces Sprague's birth and youth in Kansas, his migration to Washington state and the influence the Progressive movement had on shaping his political outlook, his entry into the newspaper business, and his arrival in Oregon in 1925. A few years later he acquired the Statesman, a newspaper from the state's pioneer era that had fallen on difficult times. Sprague grew quickly in stature and influence, yet his nomination and election to the governorship over incumbent Charles Martin in 1938, only 13 years after he had come to the state, was something of a surprise.
His single term as governor was dominated by the state's response to the outbreak of World War II. In 1942, the same voters who had embraced Sprague only four years earlier turned their backs on him, ousting him in the Republican primary. Although a competent governor, Sprague's time in office turned out to be only a prelude to his greatest service to the state. For the next 25 years, with his front page column "It Seems To Me" and on the Statesman's editorial page, Sprague evolved into the most widely-read and respected opinion-maker in the state. Yet his active public service was not at an end; he served for a time as an alternate delegate to the United Nations.
"An Editor for Oregon" provides not only a compressive look at Sprague's life and career, but a history of the state's political evolution from the Depression through the sixties. It's a first-rate work.--William C. Hall

The complexity of taxation exceeds all bounds when fastened to a multinational corporation (MNC). In a maze of rules that are always changing, a tax practitioner in the MNC landscape must be extremely well informed and ready to act with sound strategic judgement. To such a practitioner, this planning guide - which covers tax-planning considerations in depth for US companies doing business in the EU - should be of value. Starting from the proposition that holding company regimes are generally favourable in Europe - and poised to become more so as the Societas Europaea (SE) becomes established - PhD Dorfmueller analyzes the design of tax conversion and deferral structures that are advantageous to US multinationals as they pursue the following crucial objectives of tax planning. It covers: satisfying goals, such as minimizing liability, maximizing credits, deducting expenses and utilizing losses; using appropriate tools, such as routing of income and classification of entities; and overcoming barriers, especially those erected by the controlled foreign corporation (CFC) provisions of the US tax law known as "Subpart F". A detailed examination of how these methodologies are best pursued under US federal corporate law is complemented by an equally precise analysis of European company taxation, with specific tax planning techniques spelled out for Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Spain, Luxembourg and Switzerland. The reader should find many valuable suggestions on such specialised techniques as onshore pooling in the UK, gaining access to favourable Argentine taxation via a Spanish holding company, and the potential tax ramifications of EU enlargement.

A very poorly done book : not "als ik kan".......2006-02-15
I never write reviews but I really feel ripped off by this book and I would like others to be able to avoid that.
I bought this book after acquiring an early Stickley Brothers dining room set (table, chairs, buffet, china cabinet) and I wanted to find out more about them. Where better to start than with a book called "Stickley Brothers Furniture?"
If you know anything about Stickley furniture (and I don't profess to be an expert), you know that there were several brothers who manufactured arts and crafts furniture, under several company names. There was Gustav Stickley, Stickley Brothers Furniture Company, L & JG Stickley Furniture Company, Stickley/Brandt Furniture Company, etc.
Out of 238 pages in the book, 126 are devoted to Gustav Stickley and 31 devoted to Stickley Brothers. The rest are devoted to very spotty coverage of L & JG Stickley and Charles Stickley (who gets all of 8 pages). So the book titled "Stickley Brothers Furniture" devotes maybe 15 percent of its content to Stickley Brothers furniture.
While the illustrations are very attractive (evenly lit, in focus, no distracting background), they are apparently all lifted from a single auction house's catalogs. This is clearly with the auction house's consent as there is a lengthy piece about how great the auctioneers are (presumably the price for using their photos).
There is virtually no real effort at scholarship or teaching ways to "identify and value" the furniture, though the prices realized at auction (no date given) are included.
So for your money, you get virtually nothing but the catalog entries for a miscellaneous lot of furniture that happened to go through that particular auction house's inventory.
This is not a book that will increase your understanding of Stickley furniture (and particularly Stickley Brothers furniture) unless you have never read anything about this topic in your life. And if that's the case, you would be much better served with another book. There are quite a lot of good ones out there.

It is a very nice book if one is looking to do needlepoint with designs of flowers. It is very well explained and has very nice pictures.
Beautiful designs, difficult charts.......2004-07-03
I'll start by saying that I LOVE Beth Russell's interpretations of Arts and Crafts designs in this book as well as her other two. She's chosen wonderful motifs and arranged them into lovely, unique needlepoint projects. I speak from experience, as I'm now working on my third project from her books, the orange border design shown on the cover of her latest volume, worked on large canvas to make a rug. I highly recommend all three books for lovers of needlepoint, other charted needlework, arts and crafts design, or William Morris.
This book is beautifully laid out and lovely to page through and read, but its loveliness is one of its downfalls: The charts are printed in full color, without utilizing symbols to indicate yarn colors. Although this choice makes the charts pleasant to look at, the subtle differences between yarn colors are sometimes very hard to see in the charts, making working from them difficult. I spent too much time squinting at the latest chart, making little pencil dots on it to differentiate between LIGHT grey green and MEDIUM-LIGHT grey green!
I'll be proud of the resulting product, and will forgive Russell's editorial choice. Do consider buying this book, but be prepared for some challenges in using it.
Love the designs, not crazy about the charts.......2001-12-14
I really like Beth's design's, since they are much more interesting than what you find at craft stores. If you know how much her kits cost you'll teach yourself to read charts. The main problem I have is the charts. She uses alot of similar shades and unlike some authors she doesn't use markings to differentiate them andit can cause a problem. Also it helps to get an Appleton shade card.

This is not a new book. Don't be fooled. It was published in 1992, and has been released with a new cover photo. Good as it is, don't buy it twice!
Fantastic book with beautiful classic designs.......1998-11-05
The patterns in this book are wonderful. They are not like the typical mass-produced commercial crap that's at every Mervyns in every town across America. The patterns range in size from pillows to small rugs. The colors are great. I recommend using the Appleton yarns.

I used this book as my "divorce bible" when I went through my divorce July-Dec 1997. Excellent resource for those of us who have never been through divorce or do not know of anyone who has. You are not an 'idiot' for buying the book-- actually, you are the 'smart one' for wanting to be more informed in plain English terms and not "legaleeze". I'd recommend it to anyone needing help through their divorce, and afterwards.

An easy-reading and understandable book. Great!!!.......1999-03-09
I highly recommend this book to everyone, especially young teenagers who are getting ready to be adults. It is a light true picture of reality. This is a real education. This man, Jimmie Davis, surely knew how to cut hair when he tended a barber shop one day for a barber. He put a bowl on top of the customer's head and cut all around the bowl. Now that's nearly 100 years ago. This man will be one who has lived in 3 centuries. Get it!

This book is excellent for kids of all ages. I bought this for my 4 year old twins and I've read it to them several times. The photos are excellent and the writing is simple and beautifully written. Makes a great gift as well!

This book is as must read for all folks no matter what age. It portrays the American dream only thru the eyes of a Muslim boy. It is sensitive, provacative, and has superb imagery of life. You must read this book.

great visuals of the time of Jesus.......2005-03-09
This book is great for anyone who just wants to learn of the culture of Jesus' world. It is easy to read and the illustrations are accurate of what it would have been like. However, the illustrations are not high quality, just sketches of sorts but still gives a good picture of the time period.
For anyone who just wants to learn a little more of Jesus' world, this book is great!

This book is excellent from children through adult. It really helps to understand the beginnings of a faith community in a way that children can understand and adults can as well. It is an easy read without the long details. I woudl strongly recommend it for anyone who works with students of all ages
