The Russian explorer V. K. Arseniev received a hero's welcome when he returned to Moscow from the Far East in 1906, having mapped the unknown corner of Siberia just above what is now North Korea and just east of Manchuria. He could not have done this work alone, Arseniev protested, and the real hero was an indigene who befriended his party. Arseniev then wrote a remarkable memoir devoted to the Goldi trapper, Dersu, who saved his and his men's lives on more than one occasion while showing them the ways of the deep forest. An action-filled memoir of exploration and natural history, Arseniev's record of friendship with Dersu is one of the finest works of amateur ethnography. It is also the basis for Akira Kurosawa's prize-winning 1976 film Dersu Uzala.

        Book Description

Vladimir Klavdievich Arseniev (1872-1930) undertook twelve major scientific expeditions between 1902 and 1930 in the Siberian Far East, and authored some sixty works from the geographical, geological, botanical, and ethnographic data he amassed. Among these, Dersu the Trapper has earned a privileged place in Russian literature. In this Russian counterpart to The Journals of Lewis and Clark and the novels of James Fenimore Cooper, Arseniev combines the precise observations of a naturalist with an exciting narrative of real-life adventure.

Arseniev describes three explorations in the Ussurian taiga along the Sea of Japan above Vladivostok, beginning with his first encounter of the solitary aboriginal hunter named Dersu, a member of the Gold tribe, who thereafter becomes his guide. Each expedition is beset with hardship and danger: through blizzard and flood and assorted deprivations, these two men forge an exceptional friendship in their mutual respect for the immense grandeur of the wilderness. But the bridges across language, race and culture also have limitations, and the incursion of civilization exacts its toll. Dersu the Trapper is at once a witnessing of Russia's last frontier and a poignant memoir of rare cross-cultural understanding. Originally published in 1941, this English translation is reprinted in its entirety now for the first time.

        5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-01-12

A very thoughtful well written book which is particularly timely now even though it was written 100 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars First person history.......2007-01-03

This is really a fascinating book from several perspectives. A natural history and anthropological look at a time and place unfamiliar to most Americans.

5 out of 5 stars It is a book bespeaking of love towards nature........1998-01-14

Through knowledge based on survival interest, but also on in-depth curiosity, Arseniev offers a narrative monument of love towards nature. His true friendship with Dersu Uzala, the native trapper, opens to us the misteries of the Taiga, and the harmonic rules of nature, on which the role of man has also a place. The style is narrative, straight forward, without artificiality, a little cold, but leaves a vivid impression on the reader through the amazing world that effectively describes. Highly recommended book for nature lovers.

          Book Description

A memoir by Russian explorer Vladimir Arsenyev, covering his trips in 1902, 1906, and 1907 as the first European to explore remote portions of Siberia. Dersu Uzala was his native guide on these trips. The book describes their adventures deep in the wilderness. It is the source for the Kurosawa movie of the same name. A great story of exploration.

This book reads like a wilderness adventure novel that Jack London only wishes he could write. The author's efforts to explore and map the Mongolian taiga in themselves make you feel like you're travelling to this far land and experiencing the lifestyle with him. The star of the book, however, is not the author and main character. Instead, it is the fur trapper and guide Dersu, who has lived in the wilderness for so long he understands it on a level that you, as the reader, will slowly come to appreciate and even to partially share.

Akira Kurosawa (of Seven Samurai fame) directed the movie version of Dersu Usala, and that movie is also well worth watching.

                    Book Description

This comprehensive third edition covers the most widely used contract documents -- with descriptions of contract components, insurance and other requirements, bidding procedures, and project delivery methods.

The author describes how to: * Structure your documents for maximum efficiency * Effectively communicate construction requirements to all concerned * Review documents to ensure consistency and avoid conflicts

Contract documents are explained in detail -- including the plans and specifications, addenda conditions, and supplements. The relationships between the owner, design professional, and contractor are clearly defined -- who relates to whom and how, and the parties' respective liabilities.

The author gives major emphasis to the preparation of specifications and technical requirements, description writing, proprietary and performance specs, and standards. The book also provides practical guidance on engineering and architectural drawings, CAD, graphic standards, and schedules.

Coverage of contract administration includes the duties and responsibilities of the parties to the contract, meetings, transmittals, shop drawings, mock-ups, the punch list and payments.

New to this edition is a section on the advantages and disadvantages of traditional and alternative project delivery methods, including conventional design-bid-build, multiple contracts, construction management, design/build and fast-track methods.

Both books tohether really gives you all you will need to know to get started and going the rest of your life...
Chris Pye is very thorough in his writing with high attention to detail, as can be witnessed in his other books also.

5 out of 5 stars woodcarving: tools, material & equipment vol.1.......2004-05-28

i have both of chris pye's books, and i belong to his web page. his books are well written and illustrated, and are well worth the money. not only do you have the advantage of his writtings, but he is one of the few pros that you can send an email to and get a response. pro woodcarvers can be snobs. whether you are an experienced carver or a beginner his books are great and he is always very helpful.

                              5 out of 5 stars MUST HAVE.......2004-03-16

THIS BOOK IS A TRUUE MUST HAVE. I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE CARVING PART OF WOODWORKING. BEING THIS MY FIRST BOOK I TRULY KNEW WHAT TO GO AFTER, WHAT I WANTED AND HOW TO GET THE BEST OF IT. WILL HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS READ BEFORE VENTURING.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and enjoyable.......2004-03-01

This book (including both Volumes 1 and 2) is an excellent reference on chisels, mallets, sharpening, shop set-up, clamps, wood, and all the other wonderful paraphernalia wood carvers love. The chapters dealing with the black art of sharpening are especially useful, even to the experienced carver.

Written in a clear and charming style, the book has many illustrations and color photographs. This should be a basic text in a carver's reference library.

Keep in mind that these volumes do not contain actual carving instruction. (Pye has written several good books on relief carving, letter carving, turning, etc.) Also, Pye writes from a British carver's perspective and I wonder whether all the tools he presents are available in North America.

This book is incredible. All of my child's teachers wanted me to drug her to keep her in their style of learning "box". After reading this book, I found many tips and tricks to deal with her visual learning style and also it helped me to realize just how special she is!! It can be difficult raising a child who has been labeled ADHD but this book makes you realize how luck you are to have such a special child and that it isn't a bad thing, it's just different!

This book should be required reading for ALL teachers and administrators!!

2 out of 5 stars The best book on ADD .......2007-01-28

Since my son was diagnosed 2 weeks ago I've been absorbing as much information as I can on ADHD. This book is the one (out of 5) that stands out the most so far. Freed hits the nail on the head with this book. There is potential and brilliance in these children that most schools (even the Montessori school my son is in) just don't know how to tap into. My son loves doing the reading, spelling and math exercises suggested. If you have a child with ADD/ADHD this book is a must!

                                    5 out of 5 stars Required Reading.......2007-01-12

I was treated to a presentation at our school by Mr. Freed. I was so moved by his eloquent explanations of children I see every day in my classroom, year after year. I am a middle school teacher who is presented with children who for years have been misunderstood, and untaught because of a lack of knowledge concerning their abilities, not disabilities. Simply understanding the concept of a right-brained child is tremendously insightful for any teacher, but should be required reading for any teacher of language arts and math. It has opened my eyes, mind and heart to my astounding students.

                                    5 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-01-09

For anyone raising, teaching or otherwise involved in the care of kids with ADD/ADHD, this book is a "must read." As with any text, not every suggestion works for every reader, but those that do evoke amazing success.

5 out of 5 stars Finally a book that has hands on practical knowledge to pass on........2006-10-17

I have been teaching my son, and trying to figure out just how the information is suppose to get in and this book was the lightbulb. After reading this book I thought I would try some of the ideas with teaching him spelling and other subjects. I was not expecting results, wow was I surprised! He has just taken off like a rocket. He can't get enough. He finally says that the subject matter makes sense to him and it is truly just the way in which it was being presented to him. I am a believer. I have a right brained child!

Walter Aaron Clark's detailed and accurate account (the first in English) of one of the most intriguing figures of the Romantic period is now available in paperback. Isaac Albeniz (1860-1909), a renowned concert pianist, created a national style of Spanish piano music and also fostered the growth in Spain of the concerto, orchestral music, and opera. His career was to become the stuff of legend: a touring child prodigy who supposedly stowed away on a steamer to the New World, he later studied with Liszt, and eventually became ensnared in a 'Faustian pact' with the wealthy English librettist Frances Burdett Money-Coutts. Based on a wealth of new and previously overlooked documentary evidence, this biography debunks the mythology surrounding Albeniz's career--much of it spun by the composer himself--and reveals a complex individual who was able to capture the mystery of Spain in his music yet who in reality felt estranged from his homeland.

                                    Customer Reviews:

                                    5 out of 5 stars Transcendent music.......2007-04-24

I discovered Albeniz through the 2006 movie Iberia which features the music of Albeniz. I decided to try playing it on the piano. It has captured me in a way I could never have expected. I am not a young person and thought I knew the repertoire, but there is no finer music for the piano than the Iberia suite. I strongly encourage every good pianist to discover this music! Learning about the man has been as much of a joy as integrating his music into my being, for that is what has happened. He's quite a character. This book is admirable and like the other reviewer I too would like more on the music itself. However, I think the other reviewer is much to limited in whom he recommends Albeniz too. Albeniiz' piano music belongs to all the ages -- it is as good as anything ever composed, and better than most. If Albeniz were not a "Spanish" composer, he would be much better heard, and his music would be much easier to find. So do not think you have to be interested in "Nationalist Spanish Music" to be interested in Albeniz. His music is as universal as Chopin's or Beethoven's. Albeniz needs to be liberated from pigeonholing because he belongs in the universal pantheon.

5 out of 5 stars fascinating and insightful.......1999-09-14

Aaron Clark is admirably unwilling to speculate as so many much earlier biographies of Albeniz have been about the more hazy periods in his life. He is particularly good on understanding the hyperbole and publicity-friendly porkies Albeniz was given to in the context of his character. Where he is at his best is in the analysis and history of the music/forms it uses. I wish he would write a work which concentrates on analysis of the music itself as well - I'd buy that too. It is also a very entertaining read, and has many very sensible conclusions especially about Albeniz's earlier life, which is surrounded by myth! This is an essential book for anyone interested in Spanish Nationalist Romantic Music. Does this man have an email address? Ben Coulthard

Velma Maia Thomas, the developer of the Black Holocaust Exhibit, has written a passionate yet brief account of slavery in America. Lest We Forget is packaged to mimic a multimedia exhibit: pages fold out, pop up, and often contain three-dimensional objects, such as an envelope that opens to reveal a facsimile of a receipt for a slave named Francis. The production techniques may make Lest We Forget look like a children's book, but the text offers a serious, moving depiction of how slaves lived before emancipation.

"Lest We Forget" is a totally unique book. As the subtitle suggests, it is a three-dimensional, interactive book on the history of African Americans from capture to emancipation. With photographs and documents from the Black Holocaust Exhibit, it provides a tactile, touch and feel, show and tell sense that no other book can offer. It is like a visit to a museum in your own home.

My neice got this book as a present from her mother-in-law and after viewing it I just had to get myself a copy. If you are from the Caribbean and especially if you are black you must get a copy of this book. It's good for young ones for history and it is not boring, very interactive with replicas of the slave ship, etc.

It's a wonderful piece for the coffee table as a conversational starter.

                                      5 out of 5 stars Starr Neal's Review.......2007-02-16

I ordered this book because I am very proud to be of African decent, and want to make sure that this story is shared with generations to come. I feel that it is important for our children and their children to have a historical reference to connect them to our heritage.

                                      5 out of 5 stars A Must in every home...lest we forget........2007-01-19

This is truly a piece of living history. As a 5th grade teacher I know the value of primary sources. The artifacts in this excellently crafted book bring to life the black experience in the early history of this nation. My students don't only read about the past but can actually touch it, read it, experience it.

5 out of 5 stars A Personal Interaction with History.......2006-10-10

I particularly enjoyed Ms. Thomas' use of the terms 'my people' and 'my ancestors'. I too am African-American. The book treats those enslaved as individual people rather than a mass to be studied. The photographs and documents in the book address the individual and group experience in slavery. The three dimensional maps, slave ship, and documents bring history to life. I recommend this book for every African-American family, particularly those with children still at home or for their grandchildren.

                                      Book Description

It takes a special kind of man--and a special kind of courage--to routinely risk one's life for others. . . .

Lt. "Wild Bill" Meacham was a former enlisted man turned UH-1 pilot assigned to Bravo Company, 101st Aviation Battalion, an assault helicopter company whose liftships were called the Kingsmen. Meacham quickly learned that the fighting in Vietnam wasn't confined to hot LZs: He killed nine enemies on the ground during the Tet 1968 defeat of the VC.

Bravo Company carried troops and supplies for many units, but Meacham preferred flying insertions and extractions for the LRRPs of the 101st and for the men of SOG, whose operations frequently took them into Laos. From combat assaults in Cu Chi to night operations in the enemy-infested A Shau Valley to hot extractions from Laos, Meacham engaged in some of the most dangerous flying imaginable. As he hovered a few feet off the ground in LZs exploding with mortar shells and crackling with AK-47 fire, it was often only Meacham's relentless daring and calm hands at the chopper's controls that kept the men on the ground from the enemy--and certain death.

The Kingsmen were held in the highest esteem by LRRPs and other special-operations forces throughout Vietnam. This heroic, harrowing, and utterly absorbing account is a powerful tribute to those men and their fearless reputation.

This is an excellent book. It will bring you to tears, it will have you laughing so hard you will fall off your chair. This book is hair raising, it will curl your toes. This is one mans account, that of a helicopter pilot in Vietnam and his adventures. It is very interesting reading.

I had the pleasure of meeting the author (Bill) before finding out he was a Vietnam Vet. One of the most friendliest guys I have ever met! Once we exchanged interests and handshakes, Bill tossed me a book. I went straight home to read it, and didn't stop until I was finished (it was a 3 day weekend). One of the first books I've read by an officer (Ret.) and it was a good one, I only wish I was around to befriend and learn from this honorable man. Next time we meet Bill, I'll buy the drinks!

5 out of 5 stars Dwelling in Ground Zero.......2002-04-01

I Corps, in 1968 and especially Northern I Corps, was an area that could be called "Ground Zero"in the Vietnam War. The presence of large concentrations of Liberation troops and NVA in the Laos/Vietnam border area was huge. They were well trained, well equipped and possessed mobile anti-aircraft weapons which were devastating for helicopters of the Kingsmen and the 101st Aviation Battalion. "Lest We Forget" is a great story of "cheating the odds" while flying exclusively for the grunts and LRP's for the 101st Division. However, let us start at the beginning....the bloody beginning.

Bill Meacham, alias "Wild Bill" Meacham, began his year long tour in Vietnam assigned to the 17th Assault Helicopter Company at Long Binh. Even before he sat in a cockpit for his in-country orientation, he was tapped to be the investigating officer for a gunship incident deep within the jungles of III Corps. The distasteful job led Bill to realize that Vietnam was truly a dangerous place and he was knee deep in "reality."

The very first month with the 17th, Tet of 68 erupted everywhere across Vietnam. Bill came face to face with NVA, in the wire, all-around the 17th compound for a bit of nighttime excitement. Never one to sit idly by and let himself be killed, Bill took the aggressor group under fire, killing almost a squad as they raced across the 17th's compound. The onslaught was finally halted and the story of Tet 68 became one of slaughter for the enemy. However, the US media never really saw it that way. Bill Meacham couldn't believe he was knee keep in ground combat. He was supposed to be a helicopter pilot!

The nick name "Wild Bill" was not yet coined for William Meacham as the 17th Assault Helicopter Company was uprooted and shipped to I Corps. There they would join and be re-designated, Bravo Company of the 101st Airmobile Division's 101st Aviation Battalion. Still proudly know as the "Kingsmen", the unit faced new challenges and threats within the mountains and weather of North I Corps. And, for the next year Bill and his buddy W.T.Grant would slowly but surely be consumed by the "meat grinder" as they experienced days and days of the same old thing....bad weather, NVA and long, long hours of flying.

It didn't take "Wild Bill" Meacham long to realize that he was best suited to working closely with the LRP teams of the 101st Div. He and W.T. Grant made many good friends and comrades with the LRP's as they concentrated completely on the tricky and specialized work of the LRP units. Their flying skills were quickly recognized by the LRP's as "just what the doctor ordered" and they were assigned almost exclusively to fly for the them. Together Bill, W. T. and the LRP leaders formulated many techniques which proved to be most effective in getting the job done, yet keeping everyone as safe as possible, under hazardous conditions. Higher HQ's basically left them alone to performed their missions almost in their own world. That is not to say they had it easy, just that they were very good at the job. No one within the LRP leadership wanted anyone else...they were the best!!

"Lest We Forget" is a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Throughout the book, William Meacham allows the reader to "tune in" on the radios and tactical frequencies to hear the tension and terror from the LRP's on the ground. He also lets the reader hear the commo between he and his wingman, Grant. You will "feel" the sweat dripping from inside his helmet as it burns his eyes. Your gloves will become wet as he hoists LRP team members out of the jungle with a 120' long rope, called a McGuire Rig. You will ride to the hot PZ to extract the "whispering" LRP teams as NVA watch and fire from a tree line only yards away. Yet, most will be extracted safely! "Wild Bill" Meacham will live to fly another day! What a ride! What a book! What a story!

This author not only lived thru this, he has written a pulse pounding account of what it was like to lay your life on the line for your country without being a flagwaver. The fact that he lived thru this is amazing. He also shows that survival was nine tenths skill and one BIG tenth pure luck. If you want to know what it felt like to fly into a hot landing zone while the enemy was shooting at you and trying to kill [you] as you came to a standstill on the ground, read how this author describes it. In the time he spent on the ground, he and his aircrew were a perfect clay pigeon target for the North Viet Namese troops shooting every weapon they had available at his helicopter. And yet, he had to come to a complete stop in order to pick up troops under fire and fly them to safety. Uncommon courage became common for these chopper pilots. They fought hard, drank hard, and even cried hard at the loss of a comrade. Then went back to fight the war that was being terribly mismanaged by the politicians in Washington. Once you pick up this book and start to read....you won't want to put it down. Don't plan on any home repair projects after you open this book.

Equal parts history, biography, theology, and autobiography, Lest We Forget is a marvellous reflection upon the events leading up to the foundation of the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. Beautifully written and an easy read (10 chapters, 135 pages), Churchill captures the spirit of the times as well as relaying the facts of this crucial period in church history. Highly recommended to those of any age who want to learn about the Presbyterian conflict of the 1920's and 30's from a man who was there every step along the way.
