Book Description

To acquaint the users of the new edition with the original spirit and methodolgy of compiling the Biographical Dictionary, we have left intact the original Introduction and the Guide to Abbreviations. Much else has been changed, added, or cut out in the remaining parts of the volume: the list of biographies, the list of pseudonyms, and the text of individual biographies themselves. To express in figures the scope of change: 35 completely new biographies have been written, escalating the total number of biographies from 718 to 753; whereas the original edition identified 358 pseudonyms, that numer is now 435; and, in 229 biographies that appeared in the first edition, several corrective or additional facts have been supplied.

Modeling German Armor, Kind Of..........2002-05-31

This book covers all the areas one needs to know when modeling AFV's painting, dry-brushing, photo-etched parts even diorama building. It's chapters and writing style is laid out in a logical and easy-to-read manners. Sometimes just how the author achieved certain results really could use more detail (I'm still baffled as to how to apply a wash with an airbrush). The biggest problem I had with this book is that it has very little information on the uniqueness of WWII German armor. It does not cover German camouflage schemes, the wide array of colors used or the various kind of extra gear one might have seen on a German vehicle. I does cover the application of zimmerit but fails to detail the different types, such as the waffle pattern, and on which armor it would have appeared on. On how to model armor this book is quite useful. On the particulars of German armor this book is not as useful as implied.

Important background information on these lovely historic glass houses is matched with lovely photos. It would make an excellent book for planning travel to any of the cities where these conservatories are located. Well known properties are listed as well as ones less famous. This book is a "must" if you are a lover of gardens and plants.

Gardeners, Horticulturists , or anyone else will enjoy the beauty of this book. What struck me was the beautiful preparation and the reproduction of the Photos. The color and architectural features leap off the pages.

The history of the development of Conservatories adds an extra dimension - and of course nearly every large city has one, open for visiting now !

A great read, and a terrific gift for anyone.

Every Year At Christmas....Noel Coward!!!.......2003-12-07

Virtually every person I know has a favorite Christmas tradition, an activity that they perform every year that is theirs and theirs alone, and that sums up the Christmas spirit of peace, good will, and love. For my own tradition, every year at this time, I reread this wonderful book. Why, you may ask? Well, I'll do my best to explain. I received this book as a Christmas present from a dear friend when it was first published in 1982. It quickly became my favorite book, and I find that it both inspires and delights me with every new reread. I was an actor and theatre person for many years, just long enough to discover one truth about Sir Noel Coward: This stylish and elegant man, actor, singer, playwright par excellence, and all around bon vivant, simply knew more about life in general and the theatre in particular than any other person I've ever encountered. Whether dealing with stubborn, recalcitrant actresses who refuse to wear their hair properly (i.e. Mary Martin), or facing the loss of a livelong confidant (his personal secretary, Lorn Loraine), Coward's show of sheer courage, strength, and determination in facing the everyday stresses and strains of life, and with considerable humor and great goodwill, seems to me the essence of the Christmas (and, by extension, the human) spirit. Organized in chapters by the years the diary entries were made (1945 to 1969, with a prologue that covers the World War II years as one section), the book is a very relaxed and enjoyable read (usually, a chapter a night works well), and covers the time period of the years following his initial successes (by the time the entries begin, Coward had already written his best known works: Private Lives, Desigh for Living, Hay Fever, and Blithe Spirit) through the 1950's and the years of abuse at the hands of narrow-minded critics (who considered him too "shallow" and "commercial"), and on through the 1960's and his renaissance period (when many of those same critics found his plays fashionable once again). Through it all, the successes, tragedies and failures, the many, many encounters with the rich and famous (Coward knew virtually every famous person of his day and counted many as lifelong friends), and most of all, the wit and wisdom of one of the most fascinating persons of our time will keep the devoted reader enthralled for all 700 plus pages. I could say much more about The Noel Coward Diaries, but a hundred reviews could not contain it all, so I will close by saying please make this book a present for yourself (and/or someone you love). Trust me, it will be one of the wittiest, most delightful, and truly Merriest Christmases you have ever spent!!!

This story is about a Jewish-Orthodox child who was severely abused by authorities and when she complained about this abuse, she was told to listen and behave. She suffered from her injuries so badly that it put her into the hospital's intensive care and neurological unit more than once. This abuse took place in a Jewish-Orthodox orphanage, where she grew up and lived for eleven years under the supervision of a very disturbed Holocaust survivor who imagined that our heroine was her child who had been killed by the Nazis. The supervisor also instigated some counselors to use Ahuva as a human target. Ahuva channeled her energies towards constructive activities: writing a daily diary, athletics, playing the accordion, volunteering in hospitals, helping in the orphanage's infirmary, studying, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and helping other children.

The author turned her miserable life around to a very fulfilled life which gave her joy and an outlet for her pain. When God gives you a mission you find the strength to value life and not commit suicide. She wanted to live a normal, healthy, secure life with her loving mother and loving siblings, who were always there when she needed them. Her goal for writing this book is to instill her strength to those who are suffering the same fate that our heroine experienced. Her message is: love life and go on in a constructive manner. Walk with your head up high, and look for your rainbow.
