    Book Description

In the savage winter of 1876 Captain Frederick Burnaby rode 1,000 miles eastwards from Constantinople to see for himself what the Russians were up to in this remote corner of the Great Game battelfield. With wars between Turkey and Russia imminent, he wanted to discover, among other things, whether the Sultan's armies were capable of resisting a determined Tsarist thrust towards Constantinople. Frederick Gustav Burnaby was no ordinary officer. For a start he was reputed to be the strongest man in the British Army. Nor was he all brawn, being fluent in seven languages and possessing a vigorous and colourful prose style--as readers of this Great Game classic will discover. With his servant Radford, he spent five months riding across some of the cruellest winter landscape in the world before hastening home to write this best-seller.

Who in their right mind would voluntarily undertake an expedition on horseback thru Asia Minor in winter...Frederick Burnaby did in the year 1876, a time of intrigue in the Ottoman Empire and Russia where the forces that shaped WWI and 20th century alliances took root. This is an opportunity to travel back into time and traverse Asia Minor prior to the invention of the automobile. You will meet people from all classes and cultures; Turkish, Kurdish, Armenian, Persian and more. Burnaby tells of his trip with dry humor and with a suprisingly enlightened view of women, considering the times. This is a good read and worth the price of the book. For adventure travelers with time and money on their hands, retracing Burnaby's route on horseback would be a challenge even today.

The second edition of Wage Slave No More: Law and Taxes for the Self-Employed, by attorney Stephen Fishman, is the updated version of a comprehensive hands-on guide from the authoritative legal populists at Nolo Press. Topics addressed by Fishman range from choosing business names and paying taxes to protecting patents and writing agreements. The new material reflects changes that result from the Taxpayers' Relief Act of 1997 and includes relevant details on applicable new topics such as the emergence of a radical high-deductible health plan available to those who work for themselves. --Howard Rothman

This was an excellent book, but now look for Fishman's new edition with the improved title: Working for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars I thought this book was terrific........1999-08-17

This was a great book. I would recommend it to anyone thinking about starting their own business. I am a software consultant and business was not a topic I concentrated on in school. This book gave me the confidence and artillery to get out here on my own and do what I have done in the IT consulting industry for two years.

4 out of 5 stars Very solid and informative.......1999-05-29

This is my first Nolo Press book. Fishman has written an excellent, concise guide for the self-employed. The book clearly explains legal issues and, when the going gets too complicated for this midlength book, refers the reader to other sources. I think it paid for itself in about 30 seconds. Ultimately it should save me thousands, or maybe I should say, thousands of hours of rummaging around.

This is far better than "Inc. Yourself" and some other books I've seen on the subject. Fishman is very sharp, and he must have character as well--otherwise why would he spend his time writing law books for the small entrepreneur? I hope he's flourishing wherever he is.

Why not five stars? I'm just fighting rating inflation . . . five stars ought to be for "War and Peace."

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, covers all the bases.......1999-02-18

Discusses everything you need to know in an easy to read format, e.g. taxes, legal agreements, benefits

                        Book Description

With their origins dating back to 18th Century British biscuit

jars, American-made cookie jars are fun, frivolous and

fabulously collectible. Cookie jars as we know them today were

only popularized in the U.S. around the time of the Great

Depression. Today, stoneware cookie jars made by Brush, Hull,

McCoy and others are highly prized by collectors.

Featuring thousands of cookie jars by all the major

manufacturers, valued and captured in full color, Warman?s

Vintage Cookie Jars is the most complete volume available for

collectors. The book includes history, current values,

information on fakes and reproductions, marks and much

more. Presenting a visual and textual history of this unique

kitchen art form, this book will prove to be as wonderful as

the treats pulled from the cookie jars themselves.

                        Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing and limited.......2007-10-04

I am a collector with most of the relevant guides. As this was a new one, which I felt was long overdue, I was very excited. However, this book falls far short. First, the author obviously accessed a few collections, and focused on those without seeking out many other jars, some more widely available, to include. Second, it seems to have taken the word of the owners of those collections as to current cookie jar values. You can take a look at Ebay to know the prices in this book aren't at all realistic. Third, there is no index, so if you don't already have an idea as to what a jar is, then you are out of luck. The best thing about this book is good photos.

I'd still go with the Schneider book or the Roerig trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars This is the Best Cookie Jar Reference!.......2006-11-08

I am relatively new to collecting cookie jars and felt like I have all the books I can find about the topics. Many of them were published in the 1980's or the 1990's and so the price guides are off by quite a bit. This guide is Awesome! It has wonderful clear pictures, the current price, when to look for reproductions on a certain one, as well as all sorts of other helpful details. It is alphabetically organized and well written. By far the best book I have. I highly recommend to all. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Simple and beautiful projects.......2006-04-12

I liked the variety of smaller projects in this book - easy to understand and follow even for beginners. Also, no need for a real long attention span for many of these, as they are pretty quick to put together. I made the clothespin bag without the lining and it turned out great.

4 out of 5 stars A selection of attractive projects, and nostalgic feel........2004-11-22

What delightful vintage fabrics the author has!

Containing only 4 actual quilts, all of which are very simple and tasteful, the book mainly comprises using quilting for small projects.
There are 5 cushions and covers, very attractive projects using a variety of old fabrics combined with new, and loads of things in Household Linen - a variety of bags, table runners & tablecloths, and a hot water bottle cover.

Every project turns out beautifully, but not all of them are terribly useful. It depends on your focus. If you can be bothered, I note a lot of people like to make these sorts of little fiddlies and gift them.

I was very interested in the quilted pattern for the placemats - a delightful traditional japanese style.

There is a separate section for Gifts and Decorations containing yet more fiddly bags, and oddly enough, a garland. It's a row of fabric flags - cute but weird.
Additionally, there is a template for every project in the back of the book.

My feelings? I would have been disappointed to have purchased this book hoping for quilting inspiration or how-to's.

Purchase, being aware that it mostly comprises smaller projects than bedspread quilts, and most designs will not look as perfect without the old world fabrics employed by the author.

Still, a lovely book to browse through, and an inspiration to gather your own vintage fabric repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty cover, dull book.......2002-06-16

For a book promising to reveal the why and how of homeschooling, this one does remarkably little of either. The first half of the book is completely taken up with lengthy descriptions of the problems in society and the school system; only after 100 pages do we get into anything resembling practical advice.

What advice is given is often questionable, such as suggesting that the best way for new homeschoolers to begin is with a "self-paced" curriculum like ACE--completely ignoring homeschooling options that don't involve buying a capital-C Curriculum. Sometimes it is just ludicrous (a schedule for a first grader that assumes Dad is going to be teaching science and history five evenings a week).

What I found most disappointing in this book was that the writer and his family were almost completely absent from the story. Adding a personal angle, allowing us to hear their own homeschooling story, would certainly have strengthened the writing.

This may be a useful book for someone who needs to be convinced of the benefits of homeschooling (say a father in law), but that's about it.

Anyone with children should read this book before they make a decision on where to educate their children. This book reviews politics, curriculum, and morality as it applies to public schools in the United States. This has helped me make the switch from preference to conviction. The schools of today are very different from the schools 10 to 20 years ago. They are dangerous, anti-morality focused, and saturated with secular humanism. This book helps clarify those issues and shed light on what happens while the parents aren't looking.

2 out of 5 stars Didn't know this book was Christian based!.......1999-05-27

I was mislead by the title of the book; I was looking for GENERAL information about the how and whys of home schooling from a non-denominational point of view. I plan on teaching my child about God and religion, but not as part of my home schooling cirriculm. I wish I had known about what the book was really going to discuss.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! Recommend it for any considering homeschooling........1997-06-02

There was a lot of good information, and examples of how children have benefitted from being taught at home. This book can help you make an informed decision about whether homeschooling is right for your family, and shows both sides of the picture: the benefits and the work involved. I found this book very eye-opening!

Like any good underground manifesto, this book fits easily into a large pocket. It also quickly delivers step-by-step instructions for ditching traditional schools and self-teaching your children at home. But, as the author points out, homeschooling is now legal in every state. In fact, in one of the many helpful lists included in this guide, Rebecca Rupp summarizes state laws on home education from Alabama to Wyoming. Rupp--who homeschools three teenage sons, writes a monthly column for Home Education Magazine, and hosts a homeschool television program from her hometown in Vermont--lends her expertise to this how-to manual, delivering advice and current resources with an authoritative, assuring tone. Among the more delightful aspects of her book are the snapshots of homeschool life from her journals, "bulging, cardboard-covered notebooks" that illustrate the spontaneity of homeschooling, with its highs and lows unflinchingly portrayed.

Rupp covers the basics for anyone considering a home school: how to set one up legally, how to operate on a limited budget, what "tools" are mandatory (a copy machine and rolls of plain brown paper for timelines, maps, and murals are among the suggestions), and what to do with a teenager considering college. An invaluable list of books, groups, and curriculum materials closes each chapter. And for inspiration, Rupp sprinkles quotes and poems about parenting and learning. This pocket guide serves to educate first-timers and refresh long-timers alike. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

After reading this book in 2000, I was inspired, encouraged and motivated in our family's new adventure of homeschooling. I have since read this book twice more and each time I read it, I learn something new and am re-energized and motivated! A definite must-read for new homeschoolers and experienced homeschoolers who need help getting excited about homeschooling again.

This book is fairly thin book. It is less than 200 pages, but it is packed with a ton of information. There is no fluff.

There are a number of chapters about teaching children at home, or in the popular jargon of today - homeschooling. Some of the chapters are on topics like why people homeschool their children, what are the laws, does it work, the socialization question, tools of the trade, and how much it costs.

Each chapter is full of information, and includes lists of places to get more information. These lists include other books, places to get school books, and so on. The author homeschooled her three sons and she weaves in relevant selections from her homeschooling journal. So you can see how many of the points she writes about worked in her family.

This is a well written book, full of useful information. If you are interested in homeschool, or have questions about home schooling, this is a good book to start with.

I've been researching homeschooling to see if it's for me, and this book seals it. I was lacking in confidence, not sure if homeschooling was something I could do. Her book makes it sound so do-able and contains many useful resources. Some of which I've already used even though my daughter is only two. I actually got this book from the library, but now that I've finished it I'm going to buy it so I can highlight things and have the resources on hand.

I enjoyed the highly personal nature of Ms. Rupp's style in this book. It is the first of her books that I have read, and the combination of excerpts from her personal homeschool journal with resource and objective information was as entertaining as informative. It was clear that Ms. Rupp is an intense personality, very different from myself, but I nonetheless came away encouraged and motivated, rather than intimidated and thinking I could never do it all.

She does, however, spend a conspicuous amount of space on her differences with Christians who home educate. I wondered why she felt the need to comment at all. Perhaps her point is that, as in everything, you will encounter people you don't enjoy because they are different from you.

At any rate, this book is excellently written and superior in the homeschool subject area.

                            5 out of 5 stars Inspirational!.......2000-05-19

As a classic fence-sitter I really couldn't decide if homeschooling my four-year-old was something I could do, let alone do well. The words in this book helped me see that homeschooling is something I need to do for my child. The journal entries the Author published about her experience with her three sons was nothing short of inspirational. She gave them such a rich learning environment that I was envious and knew that if I had had that kind of experience then I might be a different person today - someone with a more positive self image, for instance.

I now believe I can guide my daughter to become a life-long learner who delights in discovering new things about herself and the about world around her.

A must buy for the fence-sitter!

I have been teaching my children at home for 6 years. This is the best and only resource book you need. I would recommned it to first timers and even those facing "burn-out". It is real life experience and how to overcome certain homeschooling issues. If you are even thinking about homechool READ this Book first! I re-read it every year and always find something new to implement.

This handy little tome consists of three portraits of influential German musicians of the 20th century, apparently brought together for the sake of alliteration and because of a common opposition to Nazism. Hindemith, although not actually particularly avant-garde in his idiom, became identified in the minds of the Nazi leaders with certain cultural trends they despised and was forced by them to flee to America. Hartmann, fortunate in his wife's wealth, led a reclusive life during the Nazi period, emerging to growing popularity in postwar Germany. Guy Rickards's greatest admiration, however, which is as much political as musical, seems to be reserved for the not conspicuously talented Henze. This composer could stand as an archetype of the postwar-era German artist and intellectual: he was reflexively left wing and scornful of the West and all its works. But Henze's sometimes hypocritical preoccupation with radical politics, including the dedication of an oratorio to the Communist revolutionary Che Guevara, and support for the discredited East German regime while living a life of decadent capitalist ease in Italy, may come to seem absurd in our post-communist world. This portion of the book will be enjoyed primarily by those already convinced of the worth of Henze's output and politics.

                                      Book Description

Zalkind Hourwitz lived during one of the most pivotal periods in history. A Polish Jew born in 1752, Hourwitz moved to France in 1774 and entered the intellectual and political life of ancien régimeParis. Frances Malino provides a vivid description of this compelling and exotic figure who fits none of the traditional portraits of eighteenth-century Jews. An investigation of his experiences in the French capital during this period challenges our previous understanding of Jewish emancipation, provides an additional perspective on revolutionary Paris (from that of both Jew and foreigner) and adds another dimension to the historiography of the French Revolution.
